- Vallisneria Aquarium Plant Care Guide. I’ll give you my best advice on growing this Vallisneria Spiralis aquarium plant. There are two different variables that I think will make or break you weren’t trying to grow this plant. Learning how to grow vallisneria is very easy once you know the tricks. Planted tanks with jungle Val look super green and vibrant.

A little known aquarium plant fact is that Amy Winehouse's #1 single _"Valerie"_ is actually inspired by her love of Vallisneria, specifically Vallisneria Spiralis
You win the internet for the day!
Seriously? That. Is. Insane.
@@sonofaquack6987 absolutely not
@@VinylUnboxings absolutely not serious or absolutely not insane? In my opinion I think it’s both.
Ill eat up anything Amy related even if its lies 😂
I wanted to say thanks man! I have recently planted Vallisneria and have never had a planted aquarium. I knew of flourish and was going to buy some. If it wasn't for your video I would of deffinately killed it. Thank you very much man!
Last year I got some plants with a tank and the guy had low light and gravel. I took the plants and planted them in a 5 gallon dirted tank capped with pool filter sand, lit by a Finnex led and they took over. I only add water (no changes) and a full year into this everything seems to be happy, but I plan to change the water now that it's getting warmer.
Dirted tanks with a sand cap is king 100%
I go to a local stream and collect mud from the bed as my substrate.
Not only is it abundant with nutrients and micro organisms , but it also contains seeds from the natural aquatic plants in my area , so there is a good chance of growing some very cool plants over time.
Though I would ONLY recommend this if you have 3 species of algae eaters and shrimp. 1 - Chinese algae eater (for green algae) 2- Siamese algae eater (for hair algae) 3- Otocinclus ( for all algae , keep 2 for every 15gal)
And the shrimp clean in the gravel/plant areas that other fish miss.
Completely self cleaning tank with the right parameters.
I have one inch of soil at the very bottom and that is covered by two inches of sand. That’s it, that’s my substrate. Works perfect for me.
FatherFish would be proud! I have the same substrate with a bit of extra sand
I like the led light's that you can turn off or adj, the blue light.
Jungle val grows like crazy in my tank with just gravel. I've never added any kind of fertilizer or root tabs. Beamswork also made a huge difference when I switch from some cheap lights.
Love these lights!
I love the Val!!! It’s amazing!! I like the kitchen tanks too. Swap the tall stand with low stand and make the corner approximately the same size and drop the height closer to your entertainment center. Just my opinion. ❤️❤️
Thanks!
Haha I'm glad I'm not the only one that goes crazy looking at my random size/ shaped tanks.
I am hopping that the Val I got today will grow in our terrible water. Thanks for the video.
looks like a shop, tanks everywhere
Thanks Chris , I have a hard time will plants!!
Love your enthusiasm! Thanks for the advice. (
Love your symetry around the tv and in the kitchen.)
I just setup a peacock and hap tank with weighted valisnaria, fingers crossed they let it grow in !
I had 55 gallon with only vallisneria and Tiger barbs. It looked really nice. I got rid of it because I didn’t want to take car of two tanks.
Thats strange coz mines always been in sand in my tanks and it grows insane with no effort on my part, its one of my gotos for ease like Anubias etc lol
Thanks great video. Love the different size tanks. I use root tabs every few months and the Val grows really healthy. Now I know how to trim the Val.... thank you
What brand of root tabs do you use?
@@DMike54 aquarium Coop’s Root Tabs
I have Val in my 30 gal long. I use root tabs because I have gravel substrate, and use a Beamswork. I am at the point with this tank, I have to trim about every 6 weeks. They have taken over about 1/3 of my tank. The fish don't mind.
Great video fella, very informative. I’ve just got my first plant today.
My safety OCD says don't block windows and doorways with aquariums.
This is very helpful, great tips! I keep all sorts of vals and in my various tanks and some vals have done better than others, and have always kinda wondered why. You got a new sub here. 👍
Looking Good Chris. Keep those videos coming...
Awesome vid bro, I appreciate the tips always!!!
Trying to figure out what i need to do to stop mine from dieing back right now. I'll try more light and some root tabs. Maybe i should deepen my substrate
Love the valisneria, Different size tanks are Not weird at all it will look great, if your floors hold up, perfect. Your new kitchen cabinets look beautiful, REALLY great job. I need to get fluorite for plants.Thank you-
i had algae in my 55 and amazon sword and some valisinaria. so i added seachem exel to kill the algae and it was killing my plants but two years later they are still stunted in growth hasn`t gotten over 1 to 2 inches. last month i cleaned out my filter and decided to add carbon to see if the tank still had exel still in it but now nothing much for growth. So my question is how can i fix it?
Is that home a Patio home? Or do you have a basement? Can not imagine a wood floor supporting all that weight.
Good video! love all the tanks!
hey So Ive watched you for a little bit now I just want to say I love your channel keep it up
Seriously there is no special trick to healthy Vallisneria. Only 3 ingredients needed: 1. Play sand - as a substrate is inexpensive and looks natural (dont waste your time with expensive substrates) 2. Lots of light (for 8 hours a day) 3. Big fish or lots of fish (this is the real secret) their waste from both ends (co2 and manure) is the perfect fertilizer.
I run two large tanks with goldfish and I even shut off filter and light at night and I have super healthy fast growing Vallisneria and crystal clear water
I have vals in my 20 gal long sand tank. I dont use ferts or root tabs for them. And they are growing so fast and beautifully.
The sand absorbed a lot of nutrients from fish wastes and food.
Awesome dude. I love all the info u get out to the newbies like me. I am just starting my planted tank and u answered a bunch of questions I had. Can u give me some advice on sand ans Minnie rocks which is better? And what other plants do u recommend? I want a full planted community tank.
I would do all the easiest ones! Val, swords, water sprite, wisteria! Do a mixture of the planted tank substrates. Eco-complete, Flourite, sand
Great care guide. You seemed to cover all the angles. I'd like to have some in my tank cuz I think it's cool to see the fish swimming through it, but I only have a 10 gallon, which sounds like it would be too small. 😃✌🍄
Yeah small tanks involve lots of trimming lol
I gave a piece of the Vallisneria Gigantea to my cat. I’ve never seen her this friendly or talkative. This is insane. I don’t see anything online. Is this ok for cats? Lol. Not during treats, food, Catnip, ever has my cat been this crazy and attentive.
Hahahaha
Thanks i added some Jungle Val about 1 month ago and it seems to have a few new leaves but it's not sending out any runners. I do have rocks in my tank for my plecos and yo yo fish. Will it still send out runners if those are in there?
I cna tthink of anything more overkill than fert substrate for vallis it grows in anything
I'm about to try some Val in my African cichlid tank, Cory mentioned it before and there's a species of Val is native to the rift lakes, so why not. I've had hornwort in there for a while now and my peacocks and haps haven't touched it. Yes they dig but at least the ones I have, they don't dig where there's currently plastic plants, only the big open spaces to claim territory and/or search for food. So I think it'll be alright, maybe they'll keep it from taking over the tank and it could be a good little African ecosystem.
Interesting!
Great video great plants great devil horns.
Very informative. !! Thank you.
Ok so the double 40 tank holder doesn’t look good in that room. Keep the big one and the 75 gallon . Move the double 40 to another wall by itself! Just my opinion!😊
I didn't know trimming it triggers it to start sending off runners. I've had one corkscrew val in my tank for months and it looks amazing but I want it to spread out more. My question is how much should I trim it back? It's about 10" tall right now. Thanks!
Dont trim it too often it will send soo much runners u wont belive it will take over the whole tank it it have enough nutrients in substrate
@@mohammadsaminyasar3429 welp, I started with one and now I got ten new vals growing lol. Thanks a bunch! My mollies are happy with more green to pick through. 😂👍🏻
Have you tried the father fish substrate supplement? It’s doing amazing in my tank.
awesome knowledge
Helpful, thank you.
This stuff grows naturally In the rivers here checked out this video to hopefully make it successfully grow
I've got val that I recently cut down from 8ft long
I’ve got flourite and my val didn’t take off after 3 weeks. I’ve got high light and medium stocking. Seems like i’ll need to put some root tabs in if I wanna see any results.
Great tips! I have some vallisneria in a sand tank. So if i want it to do better re substrate with dirt. Could i use some root tabs and leave the sand?
Thank you for this info vlog. 🇵🇭
Good video, man. 💚
I'm working on a 300 gallon planted tank at my job. I have a limited budget, so I'm probably going to end up with standard aquarium gravel, but I was thinking of putting dirt in mesh bags and burying that near the vallisneria. What type of dirt do you use?
Please don't use mesh bags. Look up FatherFish for how to properly do it. It can be done very cheaply.
How’s the hygger light working for you?
Great video bud 👍💯
I planted my italian val in my dirted tank about 2 weeks ago and it looks like its halfway dead now. Found your vid and now im gonna trim it back and see if it comes back. So far I have not had any success in my new tank with plants. My light is a 42w hygger which should be sufficient. But my tank also just finished cycling. Trying to be patient. I also have a ton of bubbles coming from the dirt everyday. Any advice about that?
the humidity is going to grow mold in your cabinets
What do you have on top of the tank that your lights lie on, glass??
I need to get some Val, always liked it, but the stuff st stores always looks like crap for the money....if you can find it.
I'll have to check our Minnesnowta sources.
Your in Minnesota? Message me I could prolly send you some
Thanks for the video! Question: how do you get rid of hair algae on vallisneria ?
snails and shrimp will eat it also lowering the amount/strength of light the tank gets
Good Job.
Personally I have valisnaria in just sand only and it grows everywhere and fast for me. It literally spreads everywhere around the tank.
Root tabs? If so, how often?
Dude... I can grow plants easy with a 20w -30w flood light lol.. Lights don't matter, the intensity does. Medium to high light is a must. Don't matter of its a daylight colored light or warmer light. As long as it's adequate enough to grow plants. Actually I am running a Home Depot grow light mixed with a 20w flood light from amazon. I would suggest getting the 30w 5000k kelvin lights for better brightness. You don't need fancy lights.
I would move the other tanks somewhere else and just let the 125 dominate the back area in the room. Put something awesome in the 125 like some 5 Five Star Generals.
I am trying to decide on a light and would love to know which model hygger that is that you have on that tank full of val. They don’t have any par ratings bu that light looks like its doing the job.
My vallisneria plant gets shorter and pale colored leaves, and my tiger loutes also gets shorter , is the light a reason for this? I am using led bulb lamb 1400 lumen, is it not enough lighting?
ok now i see why they never grew well in my sand bottom tanks.
Hi, May i know what those covers that you use are? The ones that let the light into the aquariums...
You can trim them? Doesn't the leaf die? Great video!
I’m setting up a 120 gallon planted tank 4’x2’x2’ . Would a beamswork penetrate deep enough . If so which one would you get and I guess I would need two since tank is 2’ wide?
Is there a type of val or similar that only gets 2-4 inches tall?
Micro sword
Mine are in sand. And they are growing crazy
What does it mean if the vale is turning dark color with some some black lines? Is it melting back? Its been 2 weeks and has 3 runners going from one single plant soil with sand cap.
I wanna know too
It’s probably malnourished and wanting more nutrients
how many hours a day do you have the lights on?
My plant keep getting nibbled by my goldfish, is that the reason why its not growing in height?
No link for the light
Can you add liquid fertilizer to the substrate
No. Liquid ferts are for the water and root tabs are for the substrate (gravel)
I love old stuff !!!! Also that shirt from winners ?
Maybe 🤔
My val shoots off new plants like crazy but my val doesnt grow tall
💚💚
Can I just plant these in gravel? I just received them and not trying to put dirt in my tank, not sure my fish would appreciate that. What do I do?
add 2 inches of sand on top of your gravel.
I love my vallisneria, and it started out great. I planted it about 5 weeks ago. There was a little bit of melting, but it didn't last long before new growth started. I even had one plant make three new runners. But in the last week, the original plant appears to have died completely and even the new runners are looking sickly. I'd added some root tabs, (Flourish brand) as my tank is just a gravel substrate, but they don't appear to have helped. 😞 Any ideas?
Probably lighting.. my tank is pure sand and they’re holding up fine.
@@predatoria_aquatica So I need more light? Less light?
@@predatoria_aquatica didn’t even answer them lol

I have to disagree. If you're new to planted tanks and needing a good substrate, stay AS FAR AWAY FROM FLOURITE AS YOU CAN GET! That stuff is terrible. I swapped over to eco-complete after months of failure with that tank and my plants are thriving finally. Even my Vals are doing better.
With the eco complete do you just add fertilizer tablets for them? If so what tablets do you use.
Can I just buy one plant and let it propagate into whole tank?
yes but it will take some time.
Vals love eco complete.
Not as much as they love DIRT 🙌
Vals love my fish poop.
Heyo
What's the common name?
Co2?
🤙🏻
Dang bro your daughter eats the cheeto bowls? What's she do with the cheeto balls?
just need sand and a well established tank it will do the rest
dont do all same size dude, the greatest achievements in living-scape history were when man went against his natural nautical fung sui lol nevermind i dont actually have a clue what im talking about carry on
Don't like the layout, but it's fish tanks so I'm ok with it

He said in his previous videos that he got divorced and lives in his own house now
I was wondering as well.
Lol I do not live there 👋
