Hi Joanna. In case you don’t remember me I am some one that had no real live plants, no wood & no substrate. You told me once on LiveStream that you love plants & for me to put in live plants.
I overcame serious physical problems & am 80% improved health wise. Guess what? My tank has White sand, cool shaped cholla wood and ANUBIAS! Thanks for show casing crypts. Sincerely, Marty Borst🌿🌱🐠👍 9:21
I remember you very well, Marty! I was happy to see your name pop up!! I’m so happy to hear you are on your way to health, prayers for your continued recovery and comfort. I am so thrilled to hear of your beautiful tank, it sounds just lovely. What a great choice of plant! 🙌🌿😊
I loved this video.. I am completely addicted to buying crypts for my tanks. Sometimes when I can’t sleep I will go online and binge buy crypts. I know it’s a problem, but I have no intention to stop.
Crypts are the best! I don't even know what all kinds I have, I just love planting them in clusters! Everyone should own cryptocorynes!
The more the merrier!! 🌿🙌🌿
I struggle with waiting for it to grow back in after it melts! But such a beautiful fish at the end of this video! 😍
I agree:) They are a great aquarium plant.
The variety is amazing
Love your videos! I alway enjoy learning more from this whole community.
Crypts are awesome plants really one of my favorites thanks for sharing great information.💯💗✌️👍
Thanks, Joanna! Great information, as always! I have had a 29 gallon set up for about 14 months, and have had crypt undulata as my only crypts among the other plants. They survived OK for the first few months, but once I got rid of my kit hood lights and put on a Stingray 2, they began to finally grow, stay rooted and propagated phenomenally. With their bronze colored leaves, they have become the centerpiece plants for me. About 6 weeks ago I did a re-scaping of my tank, and moving my crypts around did not make them happy with some melting and many having difficulty staying rooted in the substrate. But now, with patience, time and some more root tabs, they look better than ever. I love them!
Great video, Joanna! I like a number of different crypts. They are all cool in their own unique way! 😊
Can you make a video on which plants grows good in sand
Nothing grows well in just sand until your tank is well established or if you have a nutrient rich substrate below the sand using the sand as a cap. I guess the root tabs would help get the plants chugging along until the fish provide fertilizer if you have just sand. Just look for aquarium plants that like to be rooted in substrate
I never met a crypt I didn’t like.
The kind filled with undead?
Great video, I actually just started a “crypt garden” tank a couple weeks ago. I used sand as a substrate and added root tabs. How often should I go back and add more root tabs?
Joanna, you are a wealth of information. Super!
Your whole vibe makes me feel calm I love your videos What’s crazy is I feel like I know you but you have no clue who I am That’s a weird feeling💯
I have several different types of crypts in my tanks. My favorite is Wendtii. I like it’s size.
Crypts are one of my favorite family groups of plants. I have 3 different color varieties of Crypt wendtii ('green', 'bronze', 'tropica') as well as Crypt parva, and I hope to get some other species down the road when I have more tanks to set up. LOVING that parva for my wee tanks. I love the fact none of the crypts grow like crazy and quickly get out of control if you turn your back on them. I've definitely dealt with melt. Until last year, only with new ones. Last year, I changed the light on a tank (swapped from low to medium light), and my 'tropica' melted like crazy. Thankfully, it rebound as crypts tend to do. I moved it to a new tank a couple of months or so ago with minimal melt. Shocked me that it didn't melt down on me. LOL
Great video, Joanna!
Love your choice of live-bearers
I have several crypt wendtii in a 10 gallon that are huge! I have the green, red, and bronze color varieties. The green is a great size, but the red and bronze are much bigger than I expected. The bronze is an absolute monster, taking up the whole center of the tank and reaching the top of the water. I’m trying to figure out how to remove it without disrupting the rest of the plants or killing my shrimp.
I had Crypt wendtii 'green' and 'bronze' create a jungle in one of 29g tanks several years back. It turned into a beautiful crypt jungle. I rescaped that tank a couple of years ago but still have some of the crypts in there. They just have to share the tank now. LOL
I've recently expanded my crypt collection. Crypt retrospiralis is my new favorite; it was wendtii tropica. I also got petchii and lutea after watching your video on them. My most recent buys were wendtii green gecko and red affinis. I can't wait for all of them to mature so I can see what they look like full grown. Oh, and I want purpurea so bad, but they aren't in stock!!! Thank you for all of your videos 😍
Very educational thank you I have them in all of my planted tanks and they do very well
Love crypts. Have a 20 long with one planted on one end that popped up a baby all the way on the other. Do have to keep on top of them but they don’t grow super fast so it’s not difficult. Love all the different colors and leaf shapes. My favorite is wendtii. It’s just a classic. Was the first one I tried.
You turned me on to crypt parva, and I love that one. I have a ten gallon that started with two wendtii and the whole dang tank is just filled. They're big and lush, even surpassed the java ferns in there. I have ember tetras in that tank and it's a fantastic place for them to explore. So, love the lush fullness of the wendtii.
Thank You for this video Joanna! I'm setting up 2 nano tanks for some special Bettas I will be picking up in Dallas at Aquashella. In the planning stages & your experience is a huge help!
Ooooweeeeeee! Special bettas?! How fun!!
Nice vid. I wish I could find a way to stop that initial meltdown. What do you do when they grow well for a lobg period and then suddenly begin to die back? Add more root tabs?
Crypts are my second favorite type of plants!
Just came in from the greenhouse, planted all my seed for transplants for the garden. Now the wait begins!
What a wonderful time of year!!! 🌿🌿🌿
very nice, thank you for share 🤗
Hey, very good video, thanks a lot. I have one question: at 5:44 are black Platys or mollys with red fins. What is this, I can't find them anywhere.
Whenever someone want to make a low-maintenance aquascape, I will *always* recommend Crypt.
Forgot to buy fertilizer? Sure.
Bad lighting? Nevermind.
Everything outgrown them and put them in shade? Heh, do they even care? 😂
Crypt is like the ultimate _cactus_ for your aquascape; you neglect them, yet they thrive.
Compared to stem plant or echinodorus (amazon sword, etc) which are prone to nibbling, fish rarely nibble on crypt.
Meaning they will just grow without giving a damn to anything you put in your tank. 🤣
Very cool as always! I'll keep an eye open for that purple guy; he's pretty.
Awesome thanks for you
I have lutea and another unknown small variety. This video makes me want to try more varieties! That purple is really pretty! Have a great day Joanna 😊
The purple is doing really well so far! 🤞 And that is one that I still need…lutea. ☺️
@@thesmallscape I share if she’d grow a little bit more for me! ☺️🌱
Love these videos, thank you!!
Cryptocoryne Moehlmannii has a wide lighter green leaf which looks great as a background or med zone plant depending on the size of the tank. It spreads easily and will fill a tank if not managed.
6:51 wauw nice fish; witch are those black body with red fin & face, hehe first timing seeing them
Rummynose Barb (Sawbwa resplendens)
@thesmallscape: I have a crypt growing in my tank now. If I am to rearrange the tank, will this melt again if replanted in the same tank? I mean, once it has all new leaves in submersed condition, will the melt happen again? Thanks in advance!
Love your videos 😊
I'm so glad!☺️🌿
Someone asked what the name of the fish was @5:45, deep black with red highlights - I didn't see an answer. I also am curious about the name of the fish @6:50, the bluish gray fish with a red nose and tail. Both are very beautiful.
Rummynose Barb (Sawbwa resplendens)
I love crypts as well, I have quite a few species. The only one I have not been able get to grow in my tanks is flamingo, I've tried it several times.
Im growing crypt flamingo bright pink in a tank with no co2, gravel with potting soil and root tabs under for substrate and high rgb light
Well done
Love my crypts
So far I have flamingo, parva and green gecko. All were tissue cultures. And so far the flamingos are my favorite simply because they have grown the most so far.
I have Crypts in my ram tank... easily 84F... my Crypts seem to not be so green is is a temp thing? or lack of nutrients? I dont use root tabs yet...
I have a question. Would it be possible to plant them in a bowl with sand or eco complete? I really want a thin layer of sand in bottom of tank for cory cats. I already have several buce and anubias but would like a few crypts also.
Absolutely!
I'll try to
1:30 - “Crypt Keepers” hee hee. I’m fairly new to crypts (a few different ones over the past 9-12 months or so). Falling in love. I must be so lucky (bc I certainly don’t have a green thumb) because none of my tissue culture Cryots from PSmart melted even a little. BTW I always have to “watch” twice - your Wednesday videos come out as I’m leaving for work so I listen, but then.I come back that night so I can actually watch all the footage. ❤
Nice video
One thing I’ve always heard about crypts is that they have a stick growin’ out the middle of the plant but I’ve had mine for eight years and I’ve never seen a stick🤔
@5:45 what is that beautiful fish? I'm probably going to ask you on the live stream shortly also 😂
Lol Charles. Ok, you’ve got your answer now. 🙌
What is the third favorite? Mystery’s and decisions. A persons worst enemy.
The 3rd thing to know from this video? Stems are fragile ☺️
Know the third favorite plant sorry for the confusion.
@@connorcostello3864 oh!! That’s a tough one…buce or corkscrew Val. Close call. ☺️
What’s a good type of grass for an angel and rainbow community?
Can the crypt be attached to driftwood or rock
I can’t seem to keep my crypts from turning brown. I thought Wendetii Green was supposed to be…. Well green lol. I use Fluval stratum and root tabs. They are very healthy besides being brown. What could I be doing wrong?
Does crypt grow just as good in sand than aqua soil
Hi! They do for me - also do very well in pea gravel !
What are the names for the crypts at 1:50 and 2:12?
Thank you…
I have had a crypt in freezing weather for about a week and is slowly coming back after I forgot it was outside.
I hope you grow more ! I like the content and the channel wouldn't be the same if you weren't in the videos
That’s so very sweet of you to say ☺️
The number one thing people need to know about crypts is the best way to have success with them is to plant them and leave them alone or they will melt💯
i thought i was doing myself a favor by buying submersed crypts from a big box store. while they didn't melt, they did introduce LEECHES. yes, specifically asian freshwater leeches. now i'm having to nuke the tank to save my shrimp. i've never quarantined plants in my life, and tissue cultures are so expensive, but in the future, I'll be getting them tubed, tissue cultured, or from my LFS.
Something similar happened with mossballs not long ago. The chains import a lot of stuff and don’t check it carefully.
💚💚💙💙
I moved one once and it s never been the same ☹️🐠🎸
Bum deal. I’ve had that happen before too.
999th like!
