As a 1st timer in the hobby, I built a successful 100 gallon CO2 Planted tank with the help and guidance of watching this Dude channel.... He definitely knows what he's talking about.
Wonderful information and you speak the truth! I use LED bar lights that are specialized for use in a hydroponics system (I figure if its good enough the plants I eat, its good enough for my fish and their plants). Well, I put the light up quickly without much care for how it is mounted for the time being as I am planning out my new rack arrangement. One side of the light is about 3" above the tank and the other side is closer to 6" above. The lower side has a film of algea on the side of the tank and the higher side is perfectly clear. A great accidental experiment.
@@PalmerAquatics I have a 50 watt outside led light on my 75 gal that's like a ft + from the tank I turn on for like 4-6 hrs. & a submersible led light bar that's just above the water I use every other day or a few hrs. after I turn the other 1 off for a few hrs. I also have glass lids on it cause the dust in here is CRAZY. I have some sort of a lot of plant's but not as a flooded tank full, but I'm working on that too But even with the lights off for most the day I get a shimmer of algae & don't have a big fish load, so what does that tell you ?
Why don't more people know about Aqueon algae cleaner? I was fighting a green tank for months. Until I bought this product. Now my tank is beautiful. Lighting does cause it but this product works. My fish and snails and shrimp are fine. And it's under 10. It works. Two drops depending on how large your tank is. This is so much cheaper than other methods.
This video was very informative, I have an aquarium that seems to be going crazy with algae lately and I wasn't sure what was going on. But after recently moving to a new house my aquarium has been getting tons more attention recently being in our main living room, and I think the light has been on for much longer intervals then when it was in our old house. So I will be limiting the lighting more in hopes things clear up more. 😎
interesting take on the cheaper lights that cause Algae.. true they do not have the complete usable light spectrum and the plants end up not absorbing the nutrients. hence the algae.
Kind of misleading title, becase these tips are not for removing algae. Those tips won't do anything for someone that already have a diatom bloom or BBA spread all over their anubias.
Yes this helps. My tank is near collapse because of an overabundance of algae to the point where daily water changes aren't doing anything. The learning curve will be a long one, but there are good tips here.
I have a small cube curved front tank with 5 glow light danios in it, its a lovely tank but algae is a struggle at the moment, I'm planning to upgrade soon but this has helped me, thank you!
I think the best thing is just to accept algae. Like you said it's not a bad thing. I hate it but it is what it is. My other plants are prospering so I can't really do much other then clean my front and side glass. I just leave it on the back panel.
I have alot of algae, should I remove it asap or let it set there? Also my plants have black spots, is it for the same reason because I have the algae issue?
Thank you! I wondered if that would work. I have a full spectrum light that is never at 100, do you recommend a max %, or a different program other than the "dusk to dawn"? I'm hesitant to unlid due to a household combination of "I have cats" & "the fish are cichlids that I don't want jumping out".
How does moving light further higher away from water level reduce algae? It only throws less PAR into the tank. Or we can just adjust the LED intensity to lower. You did not explain.
Thank you. I totally agree with the statement (ish) that LED lights cause more algae. When I had my old tank with the hood that had a flourscent tube light, I did not have nearly as much algae growth as I do now with my aquasky programmable led light. I don't know how I am going to raise it higher for now, but in the meantime are your LED lights adjustable?,and if they are, what percentage of each light spectrum do you reccomend to reduce the algae growth? Thank you again.
Hi.thanks for the nice tip's.i have problem with the brown algae and it's cover my plants and rock's and decorate. I put one pothos on but the root of the pothos got brown aether. It's growing super slow. My plants was growing nicely but suddenly got brownly leaf. One of them it's about to die. I need ur advice on it. And one more thing, some of my rock's are starting to get more and more green cover.
would the full spectrum grow light be a good light to have on a taller tank, i do currently have them 3 to 4 inches above the water and seems there seems to be an algae bloom happening with the tank, what im asking is if it would be smarter to go back to cheaper bulb.
Great tips 👍 Only thing I’m confused is that i just put in hornwort and A few other plants. and the algae went nutts 3 times what it was. I have a FluvalSmart light on a 30 g long What I’m i missing ?
I put my anubias that were covered in bba in with my shrimp tank and they are completely clean. I couldnt even scrape off the algae but they got rid of it. There was also a kind that is dark brown and looks like rust on the leaves.. I can’t get rid of it
I have a lone betta in an imagitarium with a glass lid & LED light. I don’t think the plants are getting enough light as some of the plants were leggy and dropping leaves. When I pulled yhose plants out they felt slimy so I threw them away. I scraped the sides & cleaned algae from the pump, changed the filter and did a 50% water chsnge. All was good. Some algae but not an overwhelming amount. All was good until I added a piece of wood bought from a local pet store. I soaked it to remove excess tannin before adding it. A couple days after putting it in the tank the wood was covered with slimy green stuff and what looked like shiny little bubbles. The pump is covered with hairy little algae strings as are the sides. There are sime nitrates showing in the water test strip but the color is really light. Any idea what the slimy stuff on the wood is? It looks like the sand in the tank bottom is covered with greenstuff as well. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
Just FYI, the Imaginarium tanks, from Petco name brand, most have issues with that product. when I set up a new tank this Mother's Day .. (gift card). I got a normal betta tank set up from PetSmart. I read over 50 reviews regarding Imaginarium tanks... that could be the issue.
My 29g has a lid ( I have African Butterfly that will jump & cats that will have expensive snacks ) Think I will try a more expensive light to put under the hood & see how that works... no lid is not an option for me , so raising the light would require me trying to come up with a glass lid my cats couldn't move AT ALL :/
I do notice that overfeeding fish will cause algae blooms. My Flowerhorn is a hog and eats every drop of food and has very little algae; however, other fish that eat less if overfed will have huge green algae blooms
Shrimp and snails are the saviors for algae in a tank I had a pretty bad off 10 gallon tank dropped in a few amano and nerites and in about a week it was crystal clear
Thank for good video. I am looking for someone to do more studying of the color of lighting and is there any difference between more red, blue, green, etc. because with my Fluval I can select almost infinite levels of each color to display. How do fish respond to different colors? How do plants respond to different colors?
My cats try to eat my fish without a lid, so light is at water. What do you recommend that does NOT involve getting rid of cats or rearranging my situation to try to keep cats away.
Hello Chris i don't know you will read this or not but. if the palnt color in tank become brown or black does it mean the algae eat those plant nutrient and make it brown/black? Should i remove those "dead" plant to prevent more algae in my tank?
How often should I feed my 29 gallon aquarium? I think I'm overfeeding. I had a big algae bloom once I removed the plants and the whole water is green.
Hey Chris. I have all beamswork DA led lights on all 8 tanks in my basement with shubunkin calico fantail. I also have the aqueon glass tops. I have brown algae. Its very unsightly. I do have anacharis live plants in the tanks. Some tanks have more plants than others. I run hob and sponge filters. The shubunkin have cooler water than the calico fantail. That may not let plants grow. I have the lights on timers 10 hours a day...your thoughts?
I left for work for 5 days and left my light on by accident. Gf was home but i did not give her a run down and she thought i wanted that. Majot brown algae out break. I have covered the tank and going for a 3 day black out hoping it will help . What else can i do
Bought a Sailfin Pleco. There was a ton of 💩 in the bag by the time I got the Pleco home. After three weeks I returned it because I could handle cleaning the tank every few days bc of all the 💩.
Pleacos aren't good due to the bio load & will stop eating algae when they are big , but Siamese and golden Chinese algae eater are great to get rid of the algae on the glass , unlike pleacos they target algae untill they are big.(15 cm max)
Honestly I have hard time growing diatoms, which is something I want to have since I want to feed my hillstream species. It's all just filamentous, from staghorn to green hair algae.
I personally don't mind the poop from my albino bn. Way better than the algae. Was completely gone in a 40 gallon and 3 otto cats in a week. I agree with everything else.
Step 1 send her on a overnight girls night out maybe a cruise even Step2 do it while she isn't home step 3 just know she will eventually get over it step 4 be prepared for the cold shoulder and no kitty and solo dolo nights step 5 kiss her butt so bad people think you are a brown noser Step 6 you got it the way you want
Haven't tested my water, but my 30 gallon is in the basement. Constantly has severe algae problems. No artificial lighting, no real plants, just goldfish and koi. It is by the window, but no direct sunlight.
Most test scripts give me a false reading. They are easy too expensive compared to test kits. If you care about your fish and plants need actuate testing.
my secret to algae is tadpoles - they are hungry little bastards and go for algae. Only recommended with small fish that dont hunt them though and also good idea to remove them before they are baby frogs :D

first of all, your set up is gorgeous. I wish my wife would accept that aquatic theme. Thank you for the info as well.

I definitely concur, cheap lights do help facilitate more algae. I think many people miss that. Great video, filled with good tips.
Glad to hear we found similar info on the cheap lights

Um… there’s always an option to add a Timer (and can change the luminosity too) as en extension on those lights. There pretty cheap.

If you have bba try using heavy ferts for your plants and once the plants start taking off the bba will go away 💗
Helps a lot if your smart... Clean your tank then take these steps in to count . Duhhh
*you're ..duhhh@@louiewavey3687

Is your tank near a window? Is it near South? A lot depends on where you place your tank.

Super helpful. The algae has been rampant for me and hoping your measures will help reduce my workload.
Finally a helpful to the point video. Thanks!
Thank you for the advice my friend, I’m going to invest in some good lights and work in keeping them 6” above the tank, take care 👍✌️
A great video full of “not so common” sense. Answers which are so logically correct for dealing with algae. Why didn’t I think of that.?😟
I have a small cube curved front tank with 5 glow light danios in it, its a lovely tank but algae is a struggle at the moment, I'm planning to upgrade soon but this has helped me, thank you!

Accept the algae. wow
Thanks for sharing your knowledge, much appreciated!
Happy New Year!
Thanks for telling ppl to manually clean! Don't buy another fish to do the job
What about fish jumping out without a lid?
Wow love your aquarium set up
I have alot of algae, should I remove it asap or let it set there? Also my plants have black spots, is it for the same reason because I have the algae issue?
Heightening light was a good idea. It helped
If you can’t raise the light just get one that you can lower the brightness.
Thank you! I wondered if that would work. I have a full spectrum light that is never at 100, do you recommend a max %, or a different program other than the "dusk to dawn"?

I didn't hear the explanation on getting rid of the aquarium cover. Please explain. Appreciate you. Congrats on the family bro
Great info, thank you. Your space is Devine!
Any videso on outdoor aquariums?
I have little green live strings growing from my plants they look like something you'd see I the ocean . Any ideas. ?
Hey bro, nice informative video, what happens if you have the juwel rio 180 ? i cannot lower/raise the lights, i switched them on for 6 hours
Great video, just what i was looking for. 👌

you dont realize that the poop will contribute to bad water conditions which will lead to more algae as well as higher levels of nitrite
