The thing about women in the early days of programming isn't 100% correct. My dad worked in the industry back then. Those women did things like convert programs written on paper in to punch cards and ran them through the machine. Some of the more skilled ones fixed bugs in the submitted code, saving the coders time. But those positions died out when punch card machines stopped being used. Also there were female coders back then (not just operators), and they weren't driven out.
Ive been recommended videos complaining about how "masculinity has been killed" as in "everything is gay now" my interaction in the comment section Me: isnt gaming for everyone? Answer: no As the saying goes anybody could be a gamer but not everybody is a gamer Whatever the hell that means. Lets just put playing with digital toys on a pedestal.
@@MrSafior The answer is actually rather easy. Have you ever bowled? Maybe once, maybe twice. Probably not that often. AS if developers and writers don't have their own vision and every decision needs to pander to the demands of online strangers, part of the reason originality is so hard to come by.
Sometimes I don't like playing video games because I feel like I will be lumped into a group I would rather not be in. Its weird, and I miss when people weren't so mean to each other for trivial reasons.
The video should've also mentioned the scandal that happened at EVO 2020 to further showcase gamer culture having a creep problem. It's no wonder Nintendo doesn't want to support their competitive Smash community anymore.
The original script did mention that but it needed to be cut for time and cause it hindered the pacing. That book I mentioned in part 2 goes into more depth about it as well as another similar event at gdc
I kinda hate what the gaming community has become. I'm happy that I have a few good friends now that I will play with. And even sometimes they will on occasion become toxic. I will then do what needs to be done and call them out for being shitty. I think that's the first step. If we don't maintain our integrity then what are we doing here? Now i'd like to take a minute to talk about Raid Shadow Legeneds......
Had to leave the premiere stream early and just finished the rest of the video. Just wanted to let you know that it was really well made and a joy to watch/listen to. You come across like a much bigger creator and I sincerely hope you'll soon get a subscriber count to match that. Keep up the good work!
To be a shit head is one thing, but if a career ending or social group destroying event is spurred on by the accusation of you being a literal sex criminal. I kinda think fixating on and actively reminding people that they "still were sucky people" is equally if not worse behavior. Because it comes off more like you want them to be treated like an actual criminal rather than take accountability for anything.(loosely in reference to your projared segment) to be clear, if you're a sucky boyfriend...I really don't care nor see how that has anything to do with the Content you've made or why we should quietly disassociate with you entirely. Even worse when some of the people own up to the bad private relationship behavior. Like, at a point it just comes off like you want people to be guilty of war crimes because that's your thing or whatever. Harassment and stuff with minors and violent behavior is bad and shouldn't be tolerated, but like...sometimes it's only as bad as "I sleep with fans and ghost them" or "I cheated on my wife" and it's like...okay...? Why are we canceling you again? Why are we discussing this further? I also think what's grossly annoying to see is the unironic lumping of games into a discussion without investigation. Ghost of Tsushima being the way it is shouldn't surprise anyone because SuckerPunch made infamously and Sly Cooper. Which have all of the stuff that are used to argue a sort of modern homogenized game design. Horizon was announced at the start of the generation yet its being dragged into the discussion for, at worst, taking heavy notes from the Witchers side quests. But then again you playformed nakeyjakeys videos and they're so misguided especially on the last of us it hurts.(if you use ludonarrative dissonance unironically despite the origins of its creation, you don't know the definition of the fake term nor how to use it.) Spiderman ps4 literally being designed the way it is as a form of "playing it safe" really feels mentally insulting because you essentially got Spiderman 2 from the ps2 the video game and some how it's stealing modern shallow trends as a form of marketing safety when in reality it's stealing from the 10 plus years of Spiderman titles guilty of this stuff, titles that were sometimes, get this, budget licensed tie ins. GoW 2018 I think is just an anomaly. And let's be real, no one was not expecting titles like cyberpunk to be that checklist by virtue of the brand and developer. It's kinda a decent criticism but it also it's also just so insanely presumptive and broad. For example, you talk about innovation only flash that pizza game onscreen, a game literally aping Wario land 4. Also, feels like innovation is said without much thought. Someone is free to give an example of it in modern day but some recent examples to seem like the opposite. Breathe of the wild being every bad open world game but you can climb everything and sprint to the credits isn't a convincing example. The climbing? Sure. Non linear story? Nope, there's a reason why most devs don't do that. Same with souls titles, outside of level design, it's not innovating. Devs are aping it's style, but that just means we now have an awkward amount of games where the combat is slow and bad with an emphasis on having stamina for the sake of having stamina. Titles like GoW being inspired to not copy paste the exact combat but instead take the general idea? Innovation. Tears of the kingdom having a build mechanic? There's an idea there. Kojima gamifying every inch of a fetch quest Simulator, but nah, "bad". Like, no one is saying you do or don't like whatever, just that, this general idea really should not be used so brazenly towards them. Also, dragon ball fighterZ is an awful example of teaching the player because most of what you get from those tutorials are in fighting games several years prior. Major...fighting games...no less. By the way, just to repeat myself. That nakeyjakey vid on the last of us part 2 was very bad. In his attempt to criticize the games writing he tries targeting the gameplay and design as a way to elevate the value of his point. Ironically he missed the 2 times he could've made a good criticism of the gameplays effect on the story. I was already disillusioned with the fake made up, literally recanted by the man who coined it, term Ludonarrative dissonance. But watching as Jakey literally do essentially the exact thing that the original creator of the term did when he made a critique of bioshock just had me flabbergasted at the dogged pursuit on trying to reinvent media criticism but it's coming from people who's degrees might as well say "go elsewhere". Believe it or not, I like majority of this video. It's just I think these parts are casually stated all the time with zero scrutiny and it perpetuates a sort of "correct opinion" situation where it just sounds like lazy parroting. Kinda like the issue with Anita always was, her criticisms were bad. Her sentiments were GOOD. How people responded to her criticisms was worse. That's another issue that's buried in this discussion, a general lack even-handedness and sympathy. It's almost as if broad statements should not have specific targets because that makes it easier to lose confidence in the arguments made after scrutinizing these specific targets. Not a bad video, just some areas that get extremely under my skin because you're not exactly the first video to do a few of the things I criticized. But again, most of this video is good👍 and I agree with a large amount of its sentiments. I feel people will fail to absorb that concept because I criticized the funny greenscreen tuber who didn't like 2020s most hated game or the fact I essentially defended some other boring Sony pony triple aye movie games while saying souls has bad combat and the new zeldas did nothing for open worlds.

Good video and having been there to see all this untold in the 2010s its been draining. I would say on a couple of points, while Chuggaaconroy was being extremely gross in the past its not as clear cut and he is at least taking steps to make amends and do the right thing unlike some creators in the past which is cool I guess. Thinking back to Sarkeesian while she made some good points there are a few of her tropes vs women in video game videos i do agree with or feel she angled things in bad faith but it was hard to have that discourse in 2014 because you ether had to completely defend people out of not wanting to give reactionary gamers any ground or if you where right leaning she was literally the anti christ and going to ban video games.
I think people still believe that about game discourse to this day. you're either all in or your not. People told me I was being contradictory cause I agreed that representation in games isn't great but I like characters that are traditionally attractive like 2b. But again 2 things can be right at the same time. I wouldn't say I consider the word necessarily bad its more nuanced than that. Like gamer is used by the majority of people who actively play games. However a very vocal part of the community Co opt that word to do some pretty bad things. Gamer gate for example I'd say its more a difference between gamers people who play games and "gamers" people who use the idea that they represent the whole of game players and craft a narrative that certain groups shouldn't be represent in game, in the community or as developers. I tried to put that emphasis on some of the line deliveries but it may not have come through in the whole piece. Apologies for the confusion

Good video, I feel you perfectly put into words and vented what a lot of us feel in the current gaming enviroment. One thing I'd point out though is that being rich and socialism isn't a contradiction at all. I mean, Friedrich Engels was the son of a industrialist and helped to finish the most important works and foundations of marxism lol. Socialism/communism is about evolving the economical relations to surpass capitalism and its many problems, giving workers their fair share of pay based on what they produce, not having the majority of their labor stolen by the burgeoise. Capitalism is a system inefective at its core that puts billions to endless exploitation. Hasan frequently has bad/wrong/horrible takes, but we cant criticize him based on having a mansion or whatever... at the end of the day he is a (admitely premium) worker receiving a better share than the rest of us... just imagive how much Twitch and amazon is profiting off of his streams.

Hello, Im not from america and im more of a secluded gamer growing up since i was young using an atari 2600. Never been a political person and found interesting your personal points of why you can't enjoy games anymore. While i don't agree with most of them it left me this retrospective of yes, you are right about facts that there used to breed a certain background of people due to things like visual violence that as even a theme seen even in cartoon shows displayed when i was very young, and they were also seen negative amongst even the traditionalist family groups. We heard news like the United States wanting to ban such games during the Bill Clinton presidency, they were so resounding that they even made it to local TV here. Alas attempts were futile and games grew up, during my teenagehood there was a huge amount of edgy games and they breed their own edgy communities making their echo chamber sites like Newgrounds and internet forums, it was my first precense to drama even for single player games and I chosen to ever since then don't get along with fans of other videogames, while repercussions never reached the point of doxxing or swatting i won't disagree extreme negative emotions brew of such arguments it just never escalated to the point of ruining people's lives, so I will agree that part of human nature even existed back then. Then in my late teens genres like FPS, MMOs and such started to get popular. Videogames that used player interaction from such quantities that requires the need of meeting people online to achieve to win the game. You would form clans and guilds to band groups of players that would work together, and while it's kept brief as only the game ties them together it tends to dissolve quickly with matters like jealousy and pettyness between members that might occur on events in their activities. Entering adulthood in the early 2010s to late i noticed the influence of greedy corporations treating videogames less of a medium and a hobby and more of an industry to exploit for profit and treat consumers like cattle. Making me like a considerable portion of videogames available on stores. Now I'm entering middle aged adulthood, past the 2020s, and I'm noticing that talks about videogames has gotten extremely political, mostly opposing worldviews and that they are completely destroying each other, the matters you talk made me realize i never thought about this existing retroactively even from the times i was younger, even if a minority of games i played had a hidden political message i was too far from the spectrum of people they were transmitting it to get associated with. However I think now that you retroactively bring the problems of gaming back then that I wouldn't call myself clueless to them but chosen to be not concerning of my life, I think I'm starting to get a bigger picture is that there are two spectrum of players with two different world views, one is dominant back then, another is fighting for being heard, however just like all the examples i set out earlier, political or not, I mentioned there is bad apples that are able to ruin the experience for the player and I understand why this is the reason you can't enjoy videogames anymore. Funny enough I think you've picked a solution best for your struggle, mine was seclusion, it was that i never could grow trustworthy of strangers on the internet so i limited by playing with my own and my close friends, and only keep things simple and not get involved with online people. Yours is that nobody is talking about it, I can tell the topics you've brought are unique and personal as I haven't found any video that talks why games aren't found that brings the topics you've brought. For my personal solution that i didn't need to move a finger was alternatives, there was always an alternative game to a game you might not like, for example For the edgy games like GTA which i didn't like crime there was simpsons hit and run with some same core mechanics but more lighthearted cartoonish humor. For bloated communities i just joined small clubs and expos with irl friends, for the age of MMOs and FPS there was party games where you mostly needed a group of 2 to 4 people and could still get a good experience, and for the rise of corporate and publishers control there is indie games being a main oppositions that make games for players and consumer experience coming first. For our current situation, I think alternatives should exist, violent games, sexy games, inclusive games, games for handicapped people, games with meritocracy or different aspects to emulate reality, they all currently exist, is just that its hard to look for them, i feel the problem is that either of this two political parties want the complete elimination of the other than the existence of other and also the intrusion on each other's genres by greater power abuse, I feel if all mediums could exist people would only pick games as their avenue. However, i would love to hear your side of what solution or ideal situation for gaming could be done, if it's too much of a comment i wouldn't mind a video talking about it i would watch it :)
I think my solution there isn't to force people to play one type of game over another or to see one more relevant than the other but to just actually allow more spaces and interpretations in the space and allow them to exist. But as I laid out in the gamer gate section the issue with the community is there is a very vocal part that actively disparaging any attempt at that. I just don't really understand why you can't say parts of video games are lacking and could be better for people? Your point about political parties is interesting as I'm not American and we don't use the 2 party system so we can have more nuance and space to reason in those areas. The needle doesn't swing from one extreme to the other. Hope that answered your questions wanted to reply cause you clearly put alot behind your comment
I'm sure the video wasn't easy for you to make and release.
Yet I'm really grateful for your work. Some things in life aren't beautiful, that goes for our biggest hobbies and passions. Is it uncomfortable to talk about these topics? Yes but that makes it all the more important.

The thing about women in the early days of programming isn't 100% correct. My dad worked in the industry back then. Answer: no As the saying goes anybody could be a gamer but not everybody is a gamer
Whatever the hell that means. Lets just put playing with digital toys on a pedestal.
Yeah, I never understand why is supposedly to be a badge of honor to be a person being good at a game.
@@MrSafior The answer is actually rather easy.
Have you ever bowled? Maybe once, maybe twice. Probably not that often. Most people don't bowl after all, they'll go with friends to a bowling alley maybe, but generally just as a thing to do.
But some people really DO enjoy bowling, and do it more than once a decade. Maybe they buy their own shoes rather than rent ones. Get themselves a custom bowling ball. Maybe they'll join a league. Play every week. Care about their scores. A rare few will go professional, actually make a career of it.
Those people, who make it a specific hobby, are bowlers. You CAN Bowl, but if you're not putting in specific effort and time, you are not a Bowler.
The same can be said of any hobby. Some people knit, some people put together puzzles. Some people go out and take photographs of landscapes. Yes, you can do all of that yourself, at any time! Many things are easy to pick up these days.
But only baking one cake a year does not make you a Baker. Only bowling once in a blue moon doesn't make you a Bowler. And picking up one video game doesn't make you a Gamer.
The issue isn't that people are putting 'toys on a pedestal', it's that people treat hobbies as if they are beneath you to invest in, and that people who do invest time in them are lesser for having done so.

This video was a banger! I honestly havent seen this topic explained better than it was here.
Sometimes I don't like playing video games because I feel like I will be lumped into a group I would rather not be in. Its weird, and I miss when people weren't so mean to each other for trivial reasons.
2 days ago Tecmo Stackers was shadow dropped on me, it's an Arcade Archive game, that i only knew it as a PS1 port, still what a nice surprise.

But then again you playformed nakeyjakeys videos and they're so misguided especially on the last of us it hurts.(if you use ludonarrative dissonance unironically despite the origins of its creation, you don't know the definition of the fake term nor how to use it.)
Spiderman ps4 literally being designed the way it is as a form of "playing it safe" really feels mentally insulting because you essentially got Spiderman 2 from the ps2 the video game and some how it's stealing modern shallow trends as a form of marketing safety when in reality it's stealing from the 10 plus years of Spiderman titles guilty of this stuff, titles that were sometimes, get this, budget licensed tie ins.
Well made video man, I think I disagree with quite a few of the last third of the video and don’t love how quickly you dish out judgement on very little, but I’m going to check out more of your stuff you got some great production

"Creativity, Break-Through Technology and Employees first. Money and Greed for the Aliens."

I don't like that you consider the word "gamer" to be something "bad", but for the most part I can only agree.

@@11tf38 my main issue with him isn't that he has stuff but rather like you say he preaches all this stuff but willfully profitters off of others people's work and screws them out of compensation. So if anything he perpuates all the ideals he supposedly hates.
