My name is Kevin and I'm here to rant about video games and what makes them good or bad. You know a totally original idea no one has ever done ever.... My editing is pretty good though.

might have to do just that!
@@Kevstreehouse Hope you'll find Ruffy interesting! It's looking to be something very unique and special. There's many more lesser-known indies and smaller studio games i could mention, from Clash: Artifacts of Chaos to My Familiar, from Zet Zillions to Soulstice, but i have to actively restrain myself from unleashing a tsunami of titles. (Plus, most of them aren't 3D platformers. Though there's ones with prominent 2D platforming, like Decline's Drops, Cookie Cutter, The Eternal Life of Goldman and Magenta Horizon: Neverending Harvest)
@@jurtheorc8117 nah dude send em on I'm always looking for indies
@@Kevstreehouse Well in that case, have a lifeguard ready because there's a LOT i'm going to throw at you :P I'm going to mention them mixed between ones that are already out and ones yet to release. Starting with some of my personal favourites/ones that mean a lot to me: - Soulstice. Bit of a cheat since it's not an indie, but it's one that does deserve a lot more attention due to its quality, contents and production value) In the genre of Darksiders, DMC, Bayonetta, etc. Lot to offer with characters, story and gameplay with all the weapons, enemies and bosses. Has its divisive parts for sure but no worse than the kings of the genre like the DMC games have had. But its identity is all its own. - No Straight Roads Mix of boss-centric hack-and-slash/beat-em-up and a rhythm game. - Clash: Artifacts of Chaos. Zeno Clash prequel-- meaning it's a unique beast to describe, set in a colorful monster world with fantastic atmosphere. Really good writing, music, voice acting, art direction, nothing like it. Customizable melee martial arts combat that God Hand and Absolver fans could find interesting. - My Familiar Turn-based RPG with inspirations from the Mario & Luigi games for gameplay. Great style, lots of weird creatures and nice atmosphere. Has a demo - Cookie Cutter. Awesomely hand-drawn 2D animated Metroidvania with combat emphasis. Simply a very solid game by someone that wanted to make a world that's just... something all its own. There is a lot more planned for the future too, provided support can allow for it. (Warning, Cookie Cutter can get pretty out-there and provocative, which has turned some people off) Has a demo. - Magenta Horizon: Neverending Harvest Absoltue phenomenon of an action game. Going woefully under the radar. Game of quality, set in a colorful near psychedelic prog rock take of the afterlife, with a LOT to offer for both the player character and the enemies. (over 60 enemies and bosses, with only two or so palette swaps) (Warning, the difficulty even on the second difficulty level, may "Filter" you. It is a very tough one) The entire act 1 of 3 is out as the demo. - Zet Zillions Pretty fun roguelike deckbuilder where you can overpopulate your enemies. Really striking style and fun voice acting. - The Midnight Walk by the devs of Lost in Random. First-person horror/dark fairytale game fully made with physical props for characters and environments, like stopmotion. Set in a world where the sun was taken away and a clay pot-headed boy carrying fire is your companion. - Loco Motive One of the most solid point-and-clicks i've played in the recent years. - IMMORTAL: ANd the Death that Follows Hindu-mythology inspired Dark Fantasy game. Roguelike 2D action-platformer beat-em-up. It's a mouthful, so apologies for that, but well worth your time. Currently on kickstarter. Now for others! - Decline's Drops 2D action platformer with Smash-inspired fighting moves and more planned for throughout this year. - BLUD Top-down adventure game - The Eternal Life of Goldman AWESOMELY hand-drawn 2D platformer with an elderly treasure hunter/adventurer - Prim Point-and-click - Pirofauna By the dev of Papetura, seems to be a puzzle game made out of paper - Phonopolis upcoming game by Amanita Design (Samorost series, Machinarium, Happy Game, Chuchel) - Judero Handcrafted stopmotion action/adventure game inspired by Scottish mythology - Mashina upcoming game by the Judero dev, on kickstarter. - Bad Boro Top-down cartoonish beat-em-up soulslike - Ratshot 2D cartoonish rat mobster platformer - Promise Mascot Agency Disgraced yakuza in a world where mascots are living creatures needing to atone for a transgression - Symphonia 2D music-themed platformer, no combat at all. - Kraino Rebirth Skeleman Metroidvania - RESISTOR RPG/racing game mix - Ruffy and the Riverside 3D puzzle platformer with 2D characters - Double Shake Mischief Makers and Tombi/Tomba!-inspired 2.5D game - Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo Top-down action adventure game with a bat boy that has a yoyo. - Lost in Random Unique mix of realtime action and deckbuilding - Lost in Random: The Eternal Die Isometric roguelike side-quel to Lost in Random. (this one came as a surprise) - Harold Halibut Kind of a stopmotion visual novel. Tough to recommend as an actual game. - Pillory turn-based RPG set in a world where emotions and moods are emphasized. - Connie and the Essence of Chaos 2D platformer by the person that made the unofficial Rayman Redemption remaster. Big influences from the Rayman series as a whole here. - Near-Mage Transylvanian folklore & wizardry point-and-click. (Fun fact, the idea of a wizard school is much older than Harry Potter. Look up the Scholomance and Solomonari). - Enenra Daemon Core Character Action/hack-and-slash game with cyborg ninja shenanigans - Genokids Character Action/hack-and-slash game with rock band vs aliens shenanigans - Mightreya Character Action/hack-and-slash game with mecha & superhero airplay shenanigans - Captain Blood Character Action/hack-and-slash game with pirate shenanigans. (originally a canceled xbox game!) - Yasuke: A Lost Descendant Action adventure/hack-and-slash game with sci-fi ronin shenanigans - The Dungeon Experience By the Paradigm dev. Not sure what this is but it looks fun. - Jinn Hunter seems to be somewhere between a Soulslike and a Hack-and-Slash/Character Action game. - Iron Corbo 2D game about a martial arts janitor. - Pizza Kidd 2D cyberpunk beat-em-up - Rad Venture 3D platformer that will soon have a new kickstarter campaign. Rayman inspirations for the main character. *exhausted panting* And there may be a bunch more i'm forgetting but this is already a lot as is. I hope this list is interesting for you! Which of these games so far have caught your eye the most, if i may ask?
Soulstice was one I had know about I think it just fell by the way side but I might need to check it out again Mightreya sounds like my bag near mage sounds cool cause I grew up with HP and wanted to check out the disc world novels and RESISTOR on your pitch alone has me really curious as to how that works if I was to pick a few at random but I'll try to have a peak at most of them

From what I gather, while GamerGate did involve a lot of harassment aimed at people like Zoey Quinn, it also had a fair number of people who just disagreed with her without attacking her personally-basically just saying they thought she was wrong. For a lot of people, GamerGate was more about defending gaming against people who were seen as attacking it, which wasn't that different from earlier battles against conservative critics. This time, though, the critics were mostly feminists. I also think some of the "anti-GamerGate" crowd were hypocrites-many of them weren’t even really gamers, and some have even admitted it. But obviously, harassment is never okay, no matter who it’s aimed at. It’s worth mentioning that just because someone might be a hypocrite doesn’t mean they can’t be right about certain things. I do agree that some game characters are overly sexualized, and there should definitely be more representation for women and minorities in games. But at the same time, I don’t agree with people like Quinn, who call any kind of criticism bigoted. You can be right and still be a jerk about it. I also think critics of GamerGate often ignore the fact that there were people involved who weren’t sexist or hateful-they were just against some of the industry’s practices. And I agree with the point you made about companies using diversity and inclusion as a shield to deflect criticism. There’s a trend where if you criticize something like race-swaps in games, people will immediately label you as racist, which isn’t helpful. It feels like a lot of far-left people do this too, shutting down any disagreement by calling it morally wrong. One other thing I’ve noticed is that some game developers seem to think that if you don’t share their political views, you’re either evil or ignorant and need to be "taught the right way." Some even go as far as saying they don’t care what gamers think, as long as they’re pushing their agenda. I really don’t like that attitude-it feels like a disconnect between the creators and the people who actually play the games. Overall, I agree with a lot of what you said. It seems like actual criticism has gotten lost in all the anger, and we need to separate valid points from the emotional reactions that often take over.
have a saying with a friend of mine when you keep going left you just end up on the right
Glad to see another video from you, especially when the previous one should've gotten WAY more views than it currently has. It wasn't perfect, but is probably the best, most nuanced video discussing the current state of the video game industry.
Thanks man. I do get why that video kinda flopped but I made it more cause it was all swirling in my head and wanted it out so if anything that one's more for me then anyone else.
@@Kevstreehouse No problem. We need more vids like these online. It also really opened my eyes on just how horribly right-wing gaming culture has become. Let's hope Alyssa Mercante wins her lawsuit.
Awesome video, Kev!👍 3d platformers are (surprisingly) coming back from the dead, especially with indie/AA game developers bringing back 3d platformers from the dead! Glad that indie game developers and AA game studios are saving the gaming industry! Can't wait for more indie/AA game developers to burst out with 3d platformer joy! Also Kev, have you heard or played Atlyss, Black Myth Wukong, FIST Forged In Shadow Torch, Rollin Rascal, Popucom, Stellar Blade, Phantom Blade Zero, Wuchang Fallen Feathers, and Lethal Company?
Surprisgly I've only heard of like 3 of these 😂. Going to have to check out the others they sound dope.
@Kevstreehouse ok, thanks!👍 Also Kev, are you planning to make a video about indie/AA games vs Triple AAA games? Also Kev, have you watched Murder Drones, Lackadaisy, The Amazing Digital Circus, Port By The Sea, Ramshackle, Dungeon Flippers, Pieces Of Powder, Paper World, Catching Up, The Rhino And The Redbill, GodSpeed, Coal Town, and Garage Sale? If so or not, can you make a video about indie animation vs Hollywood studios/companies vs Japanese anime studios, please?
@@keeganmcfarland7507 I dunno if I will make a straight up this v that video as I kinda feel it in a way diminishes the effort that's goes into the project as I know people work super hard to even get a game working and I try to focus more on the positive then the negative. I've never heard of any of those shows 😅. I actually don't watch that much TV these days as I work in that industry and it's hard to find the drive to consume a lot of that media outside of work hours. Definitely going to try watch more anime this year so we'll see how they're going but hey man the those ideas sound like they have legs maybe you should give em a shot 😁
Starting off strong with the Pseudoregalia OST 😄
dang straight dude. Was going to include it in the video too but it the script turned into something else so I thought I'd just give it the shout out
@@Kevstreehouse amazing choice of music! Pseudoregalia is one of those games I wish I could replay for the first time again. The atmosphere and tight controls of that game are second to none.
@ritz87104 dude I know! I only found it cause of an oneyplays lets play and I was like huh that looks cool. It has that dark souls type of affect on your brain where its so good its the only thing you want to play and some of those challenges to get the costumes and stuff make you feel god like
Im only halfway through the video and i really only play Minecraft or smash bros but as far as black samurai or pronouns in games go i feel like the general resentment is that it shows a “brand safe dont rock the boat typically left leaning American viewpoint” and when things are worried about being brand safe and sanitized they usually also make safe and sanitized products. Nobody freaks out over the black inkling or the mostly gender ambiguous Minecraft customizations because they aren’t relevant to the games themselves. Idk enough about the black samurai game to know why thats upsetting but nobody had the same complaints about afro samurai the tv show. I think the main issue is making a cool black character for the plot or making a character black for seemingly obvious marketing purposes is the main difference and it feels much more disingenuous from the developers side. Im not a nazi btw this is all observational
Also weird side note while im out here RIFFIN! I feel like the pronouns thing in video games is a damned if you do damned if you don’t type thing where including both far right or left people’s interests, including pronouns or not can relay as if you are isolating either polar group. I think adding pronoun options as mandatory in the initial character customization would bug the far right, but having it as a regular in game option after gameplay has begun would be a way that could make everyone happy. Far right isnt forced to see it as it would bother them, and people who consider pronouns important still have a near immediate option to include pronouns as a part of general gameplay still have access to it.
No I get you similar points are raised towards the end of part 2. Its not just a case of having unrepresented groups in a game thats only surface level representation as you pointed out. are you including these groups cause you realize and empathize with their lack of presence? Or are you still making a product thats predisposed to being white orientate and sticking a person of colour or other minority in it for an easy sale? its a case of intent. people can do seemingly good things for bad reasons. Intent is what matters at the end of the day.
@@Kevstreehousefor sure! (I have 5 minutes left in the video) and i think what makes a great memorable character in any game has alot to do with 1) Simply be a part of a good game 2) Being distinct in literally any direction (goofy, smart, stupid) and fallible. 3) Have an identity that is splashable in other media Tomb raider doesnt feel like a feminist game, but everyone knows lara croft is an intelligent badass and being a British archaeologist is kinda just extra flavor text Mario can’t keep princess peach safe and is constantly going to wrong castles but being an Italian plumber is just kinda random and fun Its kinda crazy that there isnt a black character that stands out like this; since most prominent black characters belong somewhere in a series of games that uses one off main characters like gta or mafia or whatever but i dont think a new classic gaming icon cant be black but i dont find that most gaming icons come from games originally marketed towards children and most games marketed towards children use fuzzy animals or robots/machines or lego men with in my mind the only exception being mario. I dont think its impossible, in fact i think its inevitable that there will be prominent gaming icons spanning the human spectrum and likely within our lifetime but you are absolutely right that it is bordering on wild that it hasnt happened yet
Sony Microsoft and a lot of third party companies are obsessed with following trends in recent years, look at live service games, the biggest company that Sony Microsoft and the third party companies are copying is Nintendo, the next 3D Mario game is not far away from releasing and it will most likely be a big open world game and it is very likely that gaming companies will copy that if that game is a success, and since it is 3D Mario it is a 99% for that game to be a success
I dunno why but the idea of an open world mario I geniunely hate. I kinda prefer oddessys approach of more managemable and diverse biomes then one big world especially in a platformer
@Kevstreehouse It's probably going to be a bigger and improved version of Bowser's Fury's gameplay formula, everyone hates new ideas at first but I'm pretty sure that Nintendo can make it work especially because they already proved it with Bowser's Fury, just more of that but better and you have a great game
@@Shadow-Joop-157 suppose thats where I become the outlier as I didn't really care for bowsers fury. I dunno I think I just like a tighter focus in a platformer and as little down time as possible between me and the action. That said I like frontiers and thats open world adjacent so I'm probably not able to consider a nintendo style approach like that with mario. But then again if I could I'd be making games instead of doing this 🤣 So I guess I'll reserve my judgement and hope to be pleasantly surprised

the only issue with that is the hardives of any kinda have a shelf life. You'd be better servered with a mini nas or something to hold them. That way if a drive fails the data isn't compromised as they always have a redundancy drive in them you can hot swap but that solution can be expensive and not everyone has the facilities for it and again it pushes the responsibility off the industry and onto the consumer which I feel is a little whack

@@LuisPerez-5 archive pipelines hadn't been fully implemented so by the time they went it was gone so it's more an issue with organizational work flow. There's a chance they could still be somewhere they just have no idea where
@Kevstreehouse Guess I shouldn't feel bad about losing some pictures if a multimillion dollar company can just lose a whole game
No, it isn't. The insane retro games market is killing videogames
You can download everything for free bozo. Nintendo isn't getting money when you buy Super Metroid on ebay
The guy’s love life was never good
That why you mod old system or emulator. When you cant get the game physical
26:05 HE SAID AERIS!! Speaking of Konami, assuming they've given up on Castlevania, they should really just give it to a company who cares about the series and will do it the justice it deserves.
totally agree. Konami should license out castlevania, metal gear and contra but I think the thing is nowadays they're too money hungry to let anyone decenet have a shot at it. I think remakes and collection will just be their bag for years to come but dare to dream.
@Kevstreehouse Also, the more I hear about Nintendo being an asshole of a company, the less I like them.
@@ethanpease5936 you and me both dude.
@@Kevstreehouse This hurts. Because Zelda and Pokémon are some of my favorite video game franchises. But they're run by the company I despise more and more.
Having to downgrade your games to run on outdated Nintendo technology huh? Seems some things never change.
if the developer doesnt give me my game, ill get my game myself, thats the law i go by... ill always get the game if its on steam or wait for a steam release if its not on steam, but if the developer isnt interested in giving me my game, ill get it myself
That's why I stopped buying Nintendo.
I don't agree with you at all when it comes to games pressing in bullshit stuff like genders. There are only 2 genders, and it is delusional to believe otherwise, just because a group of people exist with a certain opinion does not mean they are morally right or that anyone else have to follow them. For the racial inclusion i don't have much care. Because different races actually exists. But other genders than Male and Female does not exist. it's just delusion. What if a game about world war 2 included flat earth bullshit. What would you feel? Also, beautiful women makes for a better gaming feel, they also make men look handsome, i don't get what you are trying to get at.
Love huge boobs. If you don't, you should not have the right to censor
Odin Sphere inspired one of the best Penny Arcade comics ever. Simply by accurately describing the game. This plant eats souls, makes fruit, and the fruit gives XP to my HP.
Games are bad because they are not made by gamers anymore, there, done!
Unicorn Overlord was my goty of 2024
I think the problem isn't "gamers", it's the fact that game developers want to make walking simulator cutscenefests instead of actual games.
wish i could like this video but, hearing "kamitami" nonstop is painful
The thing about games that suck are the majority of UA-camrs claiming to be gamers! Those channels are amount the top three worst to watch on UA-cam!
Without hearing other people's opinions from the beginning, I actually enjoyed BBS and finished it on the PSP. Because the game managed to balance physical attacks and magic in terms of power. Back in KH2, it's obvious that Attack Mods are much more reliable than Magic and you'll always use the right attack for the situation. But, like some others said; Re:Coded improved it.
thank you for this video, i'm a huge fan of vanillaware and thanks to you i'm love them more!
