    WOW. A practical and sensible approach. Most videos are more like show and tell with fancy high priced junk. I love your thought process. A prepared man is mentally equipped not "Inspector Gadget"!

      I used a $16 Dorcy 1 watt LED flashlight for my final 6 years as a deputy. It got me through snow storms, federal inmates and even saved a life. I gave it to my daughter when she went to college. It still works fine and she uses it for daily household stuff, not bad for a 10 year old light. When things get crazy you will not impress me with expensive gear you left home it's the stuff you have with you is what matters. I subscribed!

    I'm so glad to see such a common sense EDC! The philosophy is not one that is taught very often, but is very very down to earth! I've never felt undergunned with a revolver as a civilian---and no one ever volunteers to get shot with it to prove their point either...Thanks for the effort and work put into this stuff, I'm proud to now be a member, I hope it helps!

    • @freefieldtraining
      @freefieldtraining  8 років тому +3

      +Jesse Harper You have no idea! In a few months I'm hoping to get an honest to god video camera that will allow me to flip the screen around and see when I'm in frame. It sounds like a small thing, but man is that a pain when you have to stop and walk around to look all the time. It would take me half the time with a real camera and I could put more into Photoshop and editing.

      ZIGMAN775 my frugal folder is an Ozark Trail partially serrated one that I got from mommy a couple of Christmases ago. It's desert tan colored, about 8 bucks, and as good as many more expensive ones. The same goes for a lot of lights, as Tommy says, just more basic features.

    I carry a 26" ASP expandable baton (it's legal to carry now in my state which I live in Texas) in a side break scabbard on a nylon belt and a small keychain sized canister of Sabre Red Pepper Gel on my nylon belt also with my smartphone on it. In my pockets, however is my keys in my right pocket and my earbuds and wallet in my left pocket. That is my EDC as a civilian.

  • @prankmonkey650
    @prankmonkey650 8 років тому +5

    I love the small baton. I use it to keep track of my house keys and stuff. If the boss aka my wife tried to keep keys, I'd never see them again.

    I was military/ Law enforcement but I got wounded in Afghanistan so I make it a point to always carry because I worry about being targeted as a soft target but anyway I am an amputee on my right side above the knee so I had a special holster made for cross draw set up with a leather holster, but mostly I mainly want to make sure I have my gun on me because I always have more guns and more ammo in my truck and I am never too far from it anyway.

      free field training well I am 100 percent disabled through the VA so i do get paid decent only because I have issues with the other leg too. I qualified for the Special Adaptive Housing grant which is a special grant giving severely wounded veterans 70k to put towards an adapted home. Homes For Our Troops takes those grants and then puts it towards building a home and builds veterans with the grant a 400k house for free. I am moving in to mine on February 18th.

    Thank you for this. Most of these EDC vids have me shaking my head by the end, thinking they'd need a tac vest just to house it all. You could rock this gear in a pair of pocketed gym shorts with a good drawstring. And your gear is used. Like my old beat up Rocky flashlight I got in a 2-pack from Sams 6+ years ago. Only regret is I didn't buy more. I like how you bought 20 knives too. I like that seamless feeling knowing how to work your knife without having to think which one you're carrying. Only issue I see is the knife isn't "blacktical" lol and therefore subject to keyboard commando scrutiny. Thank you for your service to your community. I would feel more than comfortable knowing you were protecting an area I was in.

    • @freefieldtraining
      @freefieldtraining  8 років тому

      +CavanalK5 Well, it is OD green, that should count as at least 1/2 tactical points. Lol

    Sometimes less is more, I've scaled-down what I carry everyday depending on where I go or what I'm doing. Not sure where your from but here in NC it's a very gun friendly area. I don't wear 5.11 or or tactical gear to give me away, fishing pants and fishing shirts every day as im on the coast and it's common, and just as functional if not better than the 5.11 crap.

    • @tacticalveterinarian
      @tacticalveterinarian 8 років тому +2

      No I'm not, although I come from a military family. I'm just a veterinarian with a tactical mindset. I was considering a career in LE earlier in life! Who knows, I may go reserve one day? When I have free time, I enjoy training in self defense and firearms with buddies who are sheepdogs. Stay safe, it's getting crazy out there!

    • @freefieldtraining

      +tactical veterinarian Yeah, it is a little, though where I'm at it has been crazy since the 50's. Lol. My sister failed out of veterinary school, or I should say she got too many "C"'s to stay in the program. That is a hard curriculum. I have lots of respect for your profession. You should do videos of surgery or animal care. I'd love to see 'em.

      About 20 years ago, that was probably part of the dialog between my nephew's cousin and the Mississippi State Trooper when he was pulled over for a busted taillight; the Trooper found visible drug paraphernalia in his backseat that lead him to the largest methlab bust in Mississippi's history.

    What about carrying pepper spray off duty or as a CCW holder just for the drunk guy in Walmart parking lot that decides you looked at his girl and now wants to fight? I see a lot of talk about EDC and what weapon or deadly force tools to carry but not to many talk about less lethal.. I personally wish a baton was legal in my area but its not unless you are an officer or security guard so that sucks...

    You're right about carrying separate wallet and badge. I used to do the same,but finally realized that it's just another wallet to lose. I still have it in my possession just in case I decide to just carry my work ID and badge and not my other valuables like drivers license, ss card, credit debit cards, etc. I also clip my badge on the side where I have to draw my gun. It's just common sense to me that if I have to draw my gun my badge will automatically be on display and very inconspicuous way.

    Man, really glad I found your channel today. Thanks for your service to the community. Now for my comment. In my locale, the other business workers/owners around know what I carry every day and I've become some sort of "legend" lol, even before my defeating of an armed robber. They found it so hard to believe that I carried a G19 with a TLR-1, IFAK, G26, spare mag, Smith auto knife and a few other things every single day that I laid out a 100 dollar bet, if they caught me without any of it I'd pay up. They stopped trying after 3 days.

    • @Z0mb3hHunt3r
      @Z0mb3hHunt3r 7 років тому

      What they don't know is two days before that robbery my 26 was swapped with a G42, so all that stuff ended up in evidence. Now I carry a RH IWB 17L, G26 LH IWB, Spare mag, Ankle IFAK, Kershaw junkyard dog and a Microtech Hawk auto. Without fail. Guess I'm one of the oddballs that can conceal just about anything, though I don't look forward to the future back problems haha.

Those old ladies must be full time auctioneers or something. Due to this, I've developed a heightened awareness that some people call paranoia. So my EDC now includes my wallet my granny knitted me for my 37th birthday, an open carry boot knife that is really just a sawed off butter knife I found, my unicycle bike lock, a used glow stick and a small spray bottle with water and vinegar to quell any disturbances while I'm working. You're video has helped me understand that I'm severely lacking in preparedness.

    Agreed - Very realistic setup. I do it pretty similar. As I am from Germany I am limited to what I can carry but basicly i carry a "non tactical" knife, a smal olight flashlight, keys, wallet and a pepper spray (we are not allowed to carry our guns - so they have to stay in my safe) - so on the other hand for me it is no issue wearing an H&K hat ;-)

    My EDC for around home starts with the 5.11 Tactical pant w/o cargo pockets and held up by a SOE EDC w/Cobra belt buckle. The knife is the SOG Trident in Black TiNi w/seatbelt cutter setup for left hand use in the left front knife/cellphone pocket. The knife is great for cutting twine on bales of hay with the seatbelt cutter. And does not need to be open to be useful... The right front knife pocket now holds the Fenix PD35 w/lanyard 900 plus Lumen LED flashlight that uses two CR123 or one 18650 batteries. And a long sleeve flannel shirt for protection and a boney hat to cut the glare on the sun glasses. And if I wear the non- metallic toe boots then I do not need to be as careful... Also the Pit Bull likes me, so I like her... And if I leave home then up grade the shirt with a light weight nylon vest for the pockets-wallet w/IDs and NO cash, Mil. Spec. clam shell cellphone with eight hour of talk time for the chatty types (ebay less than $20.00 USD), pocket camera, ear plugs for when friends a target shooting and the Fox40 rape whistle (per Nutnfancy) w/ID tether to the vest small D-Ring. And other EDC items...And for visiting "Gun FREE Zones' A.K.A. "Gun FREE fire Zones" like the VA a computer bag (Maxpedition Testudo Laptop Backpack bag) is great for holding Level IIIA armor and a Trauma Kit... Thank you for the great video ! tjl

    What do I carry off duty? Pretty simple. I carry a m&p shield inside the waistband. I carry a good knife for multiple purposes, mostly utility, but it CAN be used as a defensive weapon if needed. I have a keychain light on my keys. In my car I have water, first aid kit, better flash light, and plenty of emergency clothing (I live where it gets - 50 F and you can easily get stuck in a mountain pass), and a bigger camping/survival knife i can baton with. Nothing too crazy, and honestly nothing outside the ordinary of any citizens where I live. Concealed carry and open carry are EXTREMELY common here.

    • @freefieldtraining
      @freefieldtraining  8 років тому

      +Jason Tremblay I am in the US. As far as I know it is not illegal for anyone to possess bolt cutters anywhere in the US. They are litteraly just a tool to cut bolts. I'm a little surprised that cordless angle grinders haven't been regulated in some way yet. Those get used unlawfully far more than bolt cutters ever do.

That being said, I am a student so I generally have my backpack with me when I'm on campus or traveling there, and an unbelievably useful thing that I started carrying about a year ago is one of those cheap programmable ham radios. It comes in super useful if I'm driving so I can listen into local police channels to tell where traffic is going to be, or if I'm taking the train I can hear what the deal is with it, as my area is notorious for screwed up train schedules if there's more than a half-inch of snow lol.
