Ushijima Wakatoshi is his full name, and sometimes people shorten it to UshiWaka, so you’ll hear him be called both Also Ushijima’s school is called Shiratorizawa Shiratori means white bird, so you’ll see a lot of white eagle imagery for Shiratorizawa (like we see crow imagery for Karasuno, cat imagery for Nekoma, owl imagery for Fukurodani etc.) Edit: correcting some translations, thank you to @Shreyas Hervatte for the corrections :))
The 'shiratori' in 'Shiratorizawa' means 'swan', but since it's composed of two kanji characters that literally read 'white(shira) bird(tori)', Ushijima has been symbolized as a mighty white eagle. Another point where this kanji comes up is when people misspeak the name Karasuno as Torino, because the similar looking kanji is used for tori (bird) and karasu(crow).
"Ushiwaka" is also a reference to the historical samurai leader Minamoto no Yoshitsune whose birth name was "Ushiwakamaru". It's the reason why Ushijima always has a very stern face, strong personality, and brutally honest. They're the ideal qualities of a military leader. It's also why S3's opening song sounds like they're going to war and the meaning behind its lyrics can be summed up as "soldiering on" 👌
Oikawas "worthless pride" scene is so impactful. Ushiwaka is saying he didn't join shiratorizawa cause he was being stubborn hence oikawas "worthless pride". But oikawa then says don't forget this worthless pride. This is a turning point for oikawa per say. He basically said that I'll beat you with my hard work so watch out. He's finally accepted that Hard work can be on par with talent you just need to work hard (He always felt inferior to people like kageyama and ushiwaka cause they had natural talent). And let's just say he does very well in the future with his "worthless pride"
@HTT i don’t think that his issue is that he doesn’t have talent but that he doesn’t have literally as much talent as people like Kageyama or Ushijima the generational talent type.
30:43 - townsperson b isn't slang! it's a callback to the episodes at the start of season 2 where yachi was introduced. yachi had said that she never felt like she belonged, like she was a wallflower -- even when she was in a school play, she was only given the role of "townsperson b." an extra, someone so unimportant that they don't even get a name in the play; they're mostly just there to stand in the background. it's her way of emphasizing that she's always been a wallflower. but hinata is the one who taught her that there's merit in EVERY role, not just for the stars of the show. that there's nothing bad about being a side character, and she's just as important as anyone else, and that she matters and can shine just as much as anyone else -- just the way she is. and now of course, she's found a role on the team, and she feels like a part of something bigger than herself, and that she can speak up for herself and participate too. :)
True, though if you didn't know "murabito b" is a general joke used in lots of anime as a metaphor for being a wallflower, so it is a bit harder for non anime watchers to understand
@@mantaren haha yeah. it's a lot of comments to get through! it does make me chuckle though, because he was talking over her explanation in the episode where it first came up, and then immediately after was like "what does that mean" 😂😂 but haikyuu is a lot to handle the first time around, let alone when you have thousands of rabid fans watching expectantly, haha
- They are located in Miyagi prefecture. - "Townsperson A," "Townsperson B".. those are just how extras are typically named in school plays based on Japanese folklores. her using it to explain her position in school implies that she never feels she's significant enough or proactively chooses to be in something huge. - "Ushiwaka" is a shortened version of his nickname. Japanese people like to shorten words in general and that includes names. Wakatoshi Ushijima is a long name so people would just call him "Ushi-Waka"
Others have explained this to him before when he asked about it in previous episodes, but he unfortunately doesn't read all of the comments cause they're so many.
Thank you for explaining this, because I definitely thought it was "Ushiwaka" the whole time and I was slightly frustrated Coach Donny kept calling him, "Ushijima". Thinking to myself, "Where did he even get that from?" But then in this episode at 13:45 , Oikawa actually called him "Ushijima". So I was all like, "Okay, well I'll just shut the fuck up then." BUT at the end 33:01 , they called him Ushiwaka!! I was so confused lol
Those Seijoh players saying "Don't ever forget this sight" are also second years, so they're not done with this rivalry yet, but will want to get revenge for their own loss aswell as the third years' last match.
Heavy spoilers ahead, the following year(Inter High), in the finals it's actually Karasuno vs Date Tech/Dateko which Dateko won and placed top 16 in the country (3rd round of the tournament). The following tourney (Spring High) they beat Seijoh again (3-??) , but lost in the 3nd round to Inarizaki (Atsumu saying he'll beat Shoyo came true) placing them in the top 16 in the country, same with Dateko when they beat Karasuno before. The following year (the 1st years last year) it's not known if they went during Inter High, but Karasuno faced Shiratorizawa in the finals and won then proceeded to go to the Centre Court for the first time but lost to Itachiyama making them the top 3 in the nation.
@@vailingbow1068 SPOILERS Too bad it was only shown in flashbacks, I wouldn't mind another 400 chapters covering the 2 next years, with new teammates and such. But I understand that the mangaka probably didn't want to make Haikyuu too long.
@@sprenzy7936 The other third years too! Matsukawa (MB, number 2) is pretty inderrated considered how well he dealt with the new and improved quick. His level of commitment to the role is unparalleled til S4 Tsuki, and the counterplay to the quick won't be as good until the Nekoma match
That's precisely why Oikawa had such a hard time dealing with being around Kageyama, he saw his immense talent and love for volleyball from the beginning and he felt threatened because he knew Kageyama could surpass him easily even with how hard Oikawa worked - it's what drove him to work even harder, as well. Oikawa is such an interesting character and don't worry, this isn't the end of his story at all! :)
@@acequinz9247 SPOILER the line dont forget this worthless pride of mine hit even harder because oikawa actually makes it in the big teams where he then faces off against ushijima hinata and all the others, so he did make it after all
People tend to forget byt Onion head and the "lazy" guy were Kageyamas teammates in middle school. One of the ones that stopped playing because of how he was acting.
I just wanted to clarify the school year in Japan. School starts around April and ends in March. So when they say they went to summer training, that's actually still during their school year. Spring is when school ends. Also, there's only 3 years of high school so that was the last match of a lot of the seniors on Seijoh (including Oikawa) Also, townsperson B just means Yachi considers herself an extra on set like in a play. She would be given a role like "townsperson B" instead of an actual character in the play. Also I wanted to clarify that his name is Wakatoshi Ushijima but people gave him the nickname "Ushiwaka" as a combination of his first and last name.
After watching coach donny’s olympic volleyball commentaries, he sounds like he’s commentating in the same way with this reaction. Hahahaha it kinda sounds funny because I feel like I’m watching an actual game on tv because of coach donny’s way of commenting.
@@ElevateYourselfOfficial yeah, please go back coach! haha... you don't have to comment on every single scene... kinda hard to watch that you kept missing lot of dialogues.. especially those impactful scenes... check out Sarah Pavan reactions on episode 17 and 18
Yes, Ukai is one of the main reasons why Karasuno has improved so much. But let's not forget that it was Takeda Sensei who started all of that. From recruiting Ukai to coach to getting Karasuno to participate in the Tokyo training camp. Glad to see someone appreciate him.
When this match first ended years ago, almost everyone thought that Oikawa was going to breakdown and Iwaizumi would support him. To people’s surprise, it was the opposite way around and saw that Oikawa supports Iwaizumi too!
Even if he has a arguably bad personality and play around too much at times off court. You can't deny that Oikawa is a strong and good captain on court. He may not be the typical pillar of steel and good behaviour that is usually associated with a captain/leader, but he leads in his own way by gaining the trust from every single member of his team to deliver, gaining respect from all his teammates on his skills and hard work (even gains respect from his self-proclaimed strongest rivals ushijima and kageyama), and gains love from fans in and out of haikyuu that attracts people to watch and understand the sport (ok this point is more for jokes, but you can't say that I'm wrong). He also studies his team religiously to know their form of play and gives them a feedback when warming up for a game, and he gives them their best chance to score by changing his sets accordingly, which in turn also pushes them to perform their best. I honestly feel like he has done enough to prove that he is a good captain, albeit with a few less-desirable quirks.
@@joannafan5366 This is precisely why I don't agree with Coach Donny's statement about Oikawa not being a fitting captain. A leader doesn't have to be someone who present themselves well in public (heck, this is exactly why politicians get flak for: many are all form and no substance). Gaining the trust and commanding the respect of those around them is what makes a leader. Oikawa is a fitting captain because he knows how to elevate his team in more ways than one. Despite Iwaizumi being the more mature and imposing between the two, notice how Iwaizumi doesn't constantly communicate with the others, and that's the quality that most people look for in a leader.
I agree with the above comments about different types of leaders. On another note, I also find the coach's evaluation of Oikawa's character to be unfortunate since it seems to stem mostly from a misunderstanding. If I remember correctly, it all began when he took an immediate dislike to Oikawa due to his flamboyant/nonchalant air & late arrival to the practice match & he started talking about how he hated players who don't take practice seriously & come late & how coaches shouldn't give special treatment to star players, while talking over & missing the Seijoh head coach's line about getting his leg checked for injuries. Missing that line, his initial assumptions stuck, & this bad impression in turn lead him to say that Oikawa is not a suitable choice as captain after the scene with the girls, while totally ignoring the fact that Sawamura was basically doing the same thing with Ikejiri (stepping aside to chat). It would've been better if Oikawa had said that he's stepping aside to a teammate before doing so, sure, but a similar act affording 1 the severe evaluation as "unfit to be captain" while the other is dismissed is kinda unfiar, & it's all because of the initial opinion the coach had made of their respective characters. & this initial bad impression still affecting his evaluation of Oikawa at the end of sn 2 is very unfortunate in addition to him not recognizing the possibility of different types of leaders.
@@bdylp1098 unfortunate indeed. Sometimes the initial first impression of something just sticks to you like glue and clouds your judgement for a long while, if not forever. This happens to the best of people. It really hammers down to remind myself again that I should always try to reevaluate my opinions of things/people from different facts, sources and opinions constantly, instead of becoming too trusting in my initial reactions. A lesson from Coach in a different way, no less.
Ikr. It's so easy to forget becuase it seemed like so long ago. It took me a second to remember that despite the number of episodes it's still the same day 😂
Little trivia: "only the most persistent plants grow from the concrete" implying that even though they are from the concrete, karasuno is so persistent and strong willed that they grew back this strong!
Brief context that I'm sure someone's already said, but those two that Kageyama meets in the hallway are Kindaichi and Kunimi, his teammates from middle school. They're two of the teammates who left Kageyama's set in the air. Hard to track all the different faces, especially when many have Black hair of course. But that was sort of a capstone on their small rivalry and frankly friendship (awkward friendship).
22:13 I'm pretty sure it wasn't Ushijima who said that :D It was just the News anchor 33:30 Ushiwaka is a contraction of his full name Ushijima Wakatoshi so you remember his name correctly :) I love it so much when you copy Ushijima's voice! 36:45 I love that you love Yamaguchi QAQ Your good taste shows :))))) Excited to see your next Haikyuu react video (whatever it may be lol) but I'm a biiiit more excited about your commentaries on the final Olympic games!!! I was screaming for hours during the gold medal match hhhhh
I like how Haikyuu sets up "villians"/antagonists only to have them become likable/sympathetic just in time to set up the next one, like: first dateko, then seijoh, and next shiratorizawa
I don't know about most of the actual players from Shiratorizawa, but I definitely felt bad for Washijo-sensei. He had what was probably less than 10 minutes of backstory but it broke my heart.
@@gurnoorsekhon6402 I said the name of the Shiratorizawa head coach and that he had a sad backstory like every other (I'm barely even exaggerating when I say this) character. It's also not really important to the plot at all.
Oikawa gives off a persona of not working hard, but he memorizes everyone’s strengths and weaknesses, he stays up late watching tape, etc. He is actually very dedicated.
Coach, when kageyama walked by the two seijoh players, those were actually his ex teammates from middle school. They were the same ones who ditched him because he was such a self centered player. That is why it was so awkward.
These Oikawa and Ushiwaka interaction scene and Oikawa saying not to ever forget about his "worthless pride" is one THE best scenes and dialogues of Haikyuu. After this game with Karasuno, Oikawa really understood his own talent, and that hard work can make him on par with the geniuses like Kage and Ushi, which is why he said his volleyball career was far from over. I LOVE Oikawa so much, my goodness. He has the most well-written story in the show imo that shows his struggle, determination, failures, perseverance and most importantly, his love for the sport.
Ah, yes. This is when the "You should've gone to Shiratorizawa" meme was created. Also Miyagi is their prefecture. What Michimiya (girls captain that slaps her face) was referring to is their sports channel that covered the Spring tournament. It's the same thing they did last season when they were going to fight Seijoh.
Oikawa could have joined Shiratorizawa after his junior year to get an easy path to the national. Instead, he chooses the harder route so that he can push himself to the limit. He played really well in that match, and even after the loss, he did not blame his teammate for not playing on the level that he was. Even give Iwa a pat on the back letting him know that everything is fine. No matter what, if Oikawa is on your team, you will appreciate him as a player and a friend. The drama between him and Kageyama could have been handled better but he was still a kid back then, and probably do not know how to process his feeling. If there were someone to guide him back then, his relationship with Kageyama would probably be way different.
I read that another reason for the “Ushiwaka” nickname was because it references a popular warrior, samurai and General from Japanese history named Ushiwakamaru aka Minamoto no Yoshitsune. (Since Ushijima is also a “powerful warrior” on the volleyball court). If I remember correctly, they reference that in season 3 when talking about about how one of Ushijima’s teammates is comparable to a subordinate of the historical Ushiwakamaru.
Hey Coach here is the link to the special clip that shows Seijoh’s team members after their loss. It is very special and shows more insight to the type of team they are and Oikawa as a captain ua-cam.com/video/Lao54_hFaA0/v-deo.html
Oikawa's "Don't you ever forget my worthless pride" is so iconic. I love that he stood up to Ushiwaka and I love that he could genuinely tell him that even though he never made it to nationals and never defeated Shiratorizawa, he doesn't regret going to Seijoh at all. He had awesome teammates and I'm sure he has lots of great memories with them, you can tell how much trust he had in his team and how much all his teammates trusted him in turn. I definitely feel like he wouldn't have enjoyed the kind of volleyball Shiratorizawa plays, I think Seijoh gave him more opportunities to grow so even though I'm sad he never went to nationals, I wouldn't have it any other way. Seijoh was perfect for him and I'm so happy that he's satisfied with his choice and has no regrets about it even though he probably could've made it big if he went to Shiratorizawa.
The fact that oikawa didn't get to lead his team to the finals before he finishes highschool is such a sad thing considering how oikawa promised his team and was determined to defeat ushijima
Generally on anime, the first and last episodes of a season usually have better quality than the rest. They do this for better promotion materials and better climax scenes. On mid season you might see some drops in quality, this is usually where they save the budget.
One of the things I love about this series is how they show the honest emotion of the losers. There are few true antagonists, there's very little hatred; everyone worked hard to get where they are, and they are giving their all. It's never about seeing the other team lose, it's just about seeing the team you root for win. As Rena GM pointed out, the recap movies (movies that condense the stories - four total for the first three seasons) each have extra scenes, most of which focus on the losing teams. Really great moments from the Date Tech and Seijoh third years.
I absolutely love the fact that Haikyuu gives you the winners and the people who have lost and the reactions. From seeing strong characters like Iwaizumi breaking down and Oikawa who kept his team together by just being there shows that his captain presence is admired by all in his team. The Worthless Pride always makes me have goosebumps because we see that he felt confident in his decision to stick with Seijoh and wanted to support players to achieve their best rather than focus on one player which Shiartorizawa highlights. The rivalry with Oikawa and Ushijima I think is a lot more intense and more so do to with how Oikawa wants to be flexible for all players and tries to pull 100% from everyone but Ushijima has had high expectations and is also known as a genius so similar to Kaegyama.
To your question at 11:20 : Yes it did, they even used the same shots with 2 important differences: Kageyamas set was spinning and Hinata had his eyes open
I've been thinking this since the season 2 episode 1 reaction, and since we're moving on to season 3 which has so much packed into so little I feel the need to say this. Just pause the video. As a rule of thumb, if you think what you're going to say is more than 2 short sentences it's better to pause, especially when you have to deal with subtitles. It gives you more time to process and articulate your thoughts without having to also give half your attention to reading subtitles and missing some dialogue. The dialogue in season 3 often ties in with and explains certain actions and it would be a shame for you to miss something important.
Thank you for finishing s2 of haikyuu, coach! We sincerely hope you enjoyed this season as much as we did, and we are always looking forward to your future reactions and other vb content!
11:46 never made that connection before! Hinata’s always growing but in volleyball he always sees how things really are the clearest. He understands the skill and experience of his opponents and his own limitations. Hinata will celebrate any victory, but even he knows he got read in the end by the Great King, and even if he didn’t receive it the fact he was there and ready is terrifyingly awesome.
"Townsperson B" refers to Yachi not getting a major role in some school theatre play, it describes how she is always on the sidelines and just not special.
To add to this, it's pretty common in plays, movies, video games, for there to be sideline characters that are credited at the end but don't even have proper names, so they are just credited as "Store Clerk A - Actor's Name" etc.
I love to see how impactful Kageyama's last year in middle school was not only to him but to Kindaichi too. It really shows how Kindaichi is committed to have a powerful middle-setter connection and he's frustrated not to get that with Kageyama. The more I see good middles play the more I see the value of trust and synergy that middles and setters need to have in order to succeed. The first time I watched Haikyuu I didn't really get how incredible Hinata's trust is and how important it is in-game, but now I get it and it's nuts
Something interesting about the “never forget this sight scene” is that it shows number 6, Yahaba taking the leadership of the team as he will be the captain when Oikawa and the other third years leave. Also, remember that the members of seijoh that Kageyama ran into are his ex-teammates from junior high.
100% Season 3 is the best. It's almost 100% volleyball too, lol. And the best intro song for me as well. I could rewatch s3 over and over again! Can't wait to your reactions!
IMO season 4 is my favourite. The training arc is definitely my favourite and the final match is my favourite in the series. I did kinda dislike the new animation, but it wasn't really bad, just different. The concepts and themes that were built on the whole series really were taken to a new level in season 4 IMO. Can't wait for season 5.
-Oikawa is a great captain off court as well. He takes care of his team and genuinely helps them improve. He just BMs (Friendly taunts) his opponents which a lot of pro athletes do including myself to get in their head. - UshiKawa is the short version of Ushijima Wakatoshi, so you'll be hearing all those names.
i agree! unfortunately, it seems coach Donny is convinced that there's only one kind of captain that's 100% acceptable when one of the most interesting things in Haikyuu is how, what works for some teams, might not work for others (like Kageyama being the best setter for Karasuno, but otherwise, not so much?...). basically, imo, Oikawa is the perfect captain for a team like Seijoh just as much as Daichi is the perfect captain for a team like Karasuno. different teams, different dynamics, different needs. Haikyuu does a great job of showing that diversity and i hope coach learns to embrace that aspect of it as well.
I think Oikawa is such a misunderstood character. It's easy to dismiss him as a playboy superstar athlete with a big ego who only cares about himself, but when he's on the court, he's pretty much the complete opposite. He has the humility and self-awareness to understand that he's not a gifted genius like Kageyama or Uskiwaka. He knows he can't carry his team with sheer talent, unlike those gifted geniuses. So he relies heavily on teamwork to succeed. He brings out the best in his teammates, and in turn his teammates bring out the best in him. In a sense, Oikawa is probably one of the most selfless, most team oriented player in the entire series. He's the type of guy anyone would love to have on their team, not because he's a perfect player, but because he's a perfect teammate.
Haikyuu is the one show with no real enemy you play against. It makes you fall in love with certain parts of every team that makes your heaet hurt when they cry after a loss. One of my favorite elements of Haikyuu and I love seeing how they aren't afraid to show the genuine emotion but highly recommend personally you catch the little after scene, seijoh after the match, it really does flesh out the iwaizumi and oikawa friendship.
Hey, there is an additional OVA (Original Video Animation), where you can see the post-game experience of Seijoh's team. I would recommend looking at this too, since I think you can relate to this :)
Haha, for the "Townsperson B" thing, I believe it's a reference to school theater shows, where every kid is guaranteed a role in the play... however, some kids get saddled with background characters like "Townsperson A, B, C, etc", "Background Tree" and so on. Yachi calls herself a Townsperson B because she's never stood out or put herself out there. I'm not 100% sure, but I think what they're getting at now is that "She's the best Townperson B", meaning she still doesn't put herself out there all that much, but she's still an extremely valuable part of the team
There's an important scene from Movie #3 starting at 1:19:30 that should be watched before starting Season 3!!! The 6 minute version on youtube is missing the beginning of the scene.
This is the link to the youtube vid: ua-cam.com/users/results?search_query=seijoh+ending&ab_channel=VenniTalvi It starts from 1:19:40 of the movie (Talent and Sense-you can see it if you click on Haikyuu movies on crunchyroll). @@ElevateYourselfOfficial The movie should be on Crunchyroll. If you watch the youtube 6 min vid it's not a big deal. I can comment on the next video what the differenc is. :)
The part of "Too bad we wont see Seijoh in the finals" was said by one of the news casters, cuz they were expecting Seijoh to win the match and go to the finals
14:31 yes right, it was one of oikawa's frustrations, aside from never winning against shiratorizawa, oikawa knew kageyama is a genius that is exponentially growing. that's why he had to work much harder than he needed to as seen from his flashbacks.
this is just very small detail 😅 but I love the glance at 7:03 that Oikawa gives to Iwaizumi, which shows Oikawa tries to wait for Iwa-chan to feel better and ready to thank the audiences before he says the greeting 💕
They call him Ushiwaka because his full name is Ushijima Wakatoshi. So alot of people nickname him Ushiwaka since that was the name of famous badass Japanese samurai general in japanese history.
If I could play for any coach aside for Ukai, I would definitely would want to play for Sejoh's coach. He's very straightforward and honest, just an overall great mentor. Kids definitely need more coaches like that out there.
Coach Donny if you still don't get what townsperson b is, yachi's referring to how even in elementary school, she only ever played the role of an extra in school plays and such. so she's comparing that to being in a supporting role on the volleyball team. In summary Hinata told her "we couldn't have done it without you", Yachi says "even though i'm just an extra on the team?", then hinata responds "your the best supporting role in the state"
18:28 Absolutely right! Whenever we get a compliment we rarely say thank you. And rather say "nah it was all possible because of you" or something like that. 😆
some of my favourite moments in haikyuu are when karasuno lose to oikawa the first time and they all eat and cry their eyes out and then oikawa’s team loses and they really mourn the loss in the same way
I don't agree that season three has little story. It brings into question the potential of different physical qualities and brings two types of concepts into a deep analysis. There is much more to digest than just the game
It's moments like when oikawa taps iwaizumi on the back that is why he is the captain he is silly and can be childish but he understands his teammates and is always there for them. (He still needs iwaizumi to keep him in check)
Coach, I wanted to take a minute to say thank you. Not only for your insight, but for the life tips you provide, which I think can help a lot of people (for example what you said about what we can learn from pain). I'm sure the people you coach can learn a lot from you and improve not only in volleyball but also in life itself. I also want to say thanks for helping me enjoy more volleyball in general. I haven't watched much volleyball matches in my life but since you started your Tokyo 2020 commentary I've started liking more watching sports and now it feels easier and more rewarding for me to do it.
Ooo seeing an elevate yourself notification in my inbox always makes me happy. Just finished watching the usa women's volleyball final. Its a volleyball heavy day for me. Lol
Super excited for season 3, I hope you will do another end of season discussion with Victoria Garrick again as that was really entertaining last time and she is one week away from finishing season 2 I think. Keep up the great work! Much love

I cant believe the time has come when we'll finally see Coach's reaction to season three, definitely one of my favorites so far because of all the action!!! There are some incredible moments and interesting players from Shiratorizawa, and the opening is amazing too! So I'm looking forward your take on them haha
Yay. The final episode of season 2 reaction is just what I needed after the amazing women's Olympic volleyball final. (I'm so glad I was able to stay awake til 2am to see all of it!) I appreciate your story about the player that became a manager. I was cut from my volleyball team my sophomore year, so I learned how to keep the scorebook for my sister's junior high games. By my junior year, all of that time observing and learning the game paid off, because while I didn't make the team, per se, I became the manager. Then, because of an error by my school, I was ineligible to play my senior year, so I kept managing. I practiced with the team and on days off, peppered with my sister. I always felt like I was part of the team, and they even gave me a personalized jersey my senior year even though I couldn't play. I was able to use my qualities (diligence, accuracy, meticulousness) to help out the team. I even won service awards even though I didn't play in a single match.
Oikawa is a highly respected volleyball player within his peers and his team. There’s great banter between them, but while he can have a relaxed demeanour at times, everyone can see how serious he is at his craft and how hard he’s worked to become the player he is. Nishinoya and Tanaka can also act like goofballs but don’t get the hate from coach Donny as Oikawa does 😂😅
@@trentward2725 I get that, my point still stands. Seijoh under Oikawa are one of the best and most respected teams in their prefecture. There's no right or wrong way to lead a team; a captain gets the best out of their team which I think we all agree that Oikawa does. Just because he can be a bit of a Chad at times, doesn't make him a bad captain.
Yeah. Exactly. That's why I'm bothered a bit when he says he doesn't like Oikawa. He doesn't understand because Oikawa isn't the main characters. I'm fine if he doesn't like him if he understood him.
@@vailingbow1068 I feel the same. I don't care whether he likes or hates Oikawa, but since he missed the Seijoh head coach's line about getting his leg checked for injuries while talking about how he hates players who don't take practice seriously, come late, & get special treatment, his opinion of him based on that initial impression kinda bothers me.
Hinata and Yachi both played "Townsperson B" aka just a background character in their school play. When the term first came up Yachi had the mentality that she was just an unimportant background character in her life, but that changed to "I may be a background character but I can still do important things!"
I would love to see some coach commentary for the women’s volleyball matches! No rush to put them out but I do hope some are on the way - girls teams need some love too
Thank you Coach for sparing some time to give us Haikyu content! Season 3 is definitely the best in terms of action and animation quality. I know it's still far away, but Season 4 is where I'm most excited for you to watch. A lot of characters and moments I'd love to hear your opinion on.
i always like how you talk about pain amd regret cause i'm afraid of feeling them so i tend to push th back. i know that i need but i'm just scared lmao. ao you coach mentioned few more times is slowly motivating me
I've always thought that Oikawa was there for the save on time. It's just that the ball hit the blocker's finger, and gave the ball a spin. Hence that, instead of receiving it, it bounced off K-pops hand instead.
"Townsperson B" is a reference to theater. You know, you have unnamed extras in basically every play? So she's saying when she was in a play in school, her role was just "Townsperson" without a name. But she doesn't stop there, she wasn't even "Townsperson A", she was "Townsperson B", which I guess is like a double whammy haha. So it's an expression of her lack of confidence, which she's been slowly overcoming since joining the team.
Excitedddd for season3!!! It's all intense and dramatic. Love love the the whole season. Though season 4 has great storytelling too, season 3 was the best in terms of overall pacing, the animation style. It's totally focused on the finals. And you're going to see Hinata's growth realistically in comparison to the previous seasons where he's mostly shown to have great form rather than flaws. Idk. S3 is a tearjerker for those sympathetic with underdogs 😂
Ushijima Wakatoshi is his full name, and sometimes people shorten it to UshiWaka, so you’ll hear him be called both
Also
Ushijima’s school is called Shiratorizawa
Shiratori means white bird, so you’ll see a lot of white eagle imagery for Shiratorizawa
(like we see crow imagery for Karasuno, cat imagery for Nekoma, owl imagery for Fukurodani etc.)
Edit: correcting some translations, thank you to @Shreyas Hervatte for the corrections :))
@@shreyashervatte5495 oh thanks, I’ll correct it :))
It's also why S3's opening song sounds like they're going to war and the meaning behind its lyrics can be summed up as "soldiering on" 👌
Let's help coach read this
I won’t lie, I didn’t realize “Ushiwaka” was a nickname that combined his full name until recently. Ushijima vs. Ushiwaka use to confuse me lol
Ushijima: if only you used logic instead of your feelings
Ushijima the very next day:
@HTT i don’t think that his issue is that he doesn’t have talent but that he doesn’t have literally as much talent as people like Kageyama or Ushijima the generational talent type.
Well said my man!!
yeah, Coach missed a lot of impactful scenes in this episode
True
This has been explained to him so many times. He unfortunately never sees the explanations for this one in the comments.
Up
i always understand townsperson B as more like an NPC B... like someone not worth remembering for the plot (which she isn't)
@Real_Andoru Next episode Benkei is going to be introduced. Who is traditionally the sidekick to Ushiwaka
Thinking to myself, "Where did he even get that from?"
But then in this episode at 13:45 , Oikawa actually called him "Ushijima". So I was all like, "Okay, well I'll just shut the fuck up then."
BUT at the end 33:01 , they called him Ushiwaka!!
I was so confused lol
I just made almost this exact comment and then was just browsing comments and saw it! great minds :D

Too bad it was only shown in flashbacks, I wouldn't mind another 400 chapters covering the 2 next years, with new teammates and such. But I understand that the mangaka probably didn't want to make Haikyuu too long.
Though without Oikawa, I’m not really interested in their team anymore
@@vailingbow1068 this is painful.

His entire team stopped playing, not just them, theyre just the most prominent
I just wanted to clarify the school year in Japan. School starts around April and ends in March. So when they say they went to summer training, that's actually still during their school year. Spring is when school ends. Also, there's only 3 years of high school so that was the last match of a lot of the seniors on Seijoh (including Oikawa)
Also, townsperson B just means Yachi considers herself an extra on set like in a play. She would be given a role like "townsperson B" instead of an actual character in the play.
Also I wanted to clarify that his name is Wakatoshi Ushijima but people gave him the nickname "Ushiwaka" as a combination of his first and last name.

Yes, Ukai is one of the main reasons why Karasuno has improved so much. But let's not forget that it was Takeda Sensei who started all of that. From recruiting Ukai to coach to getting Karasuno to participate in the Tokyo training camp. Glad to see someone appreciate him.
That wasn't Ushijima saying he was disappointed not to see Seijoh in the finals, it was the newscaster.
Yeah I don't get how he thought that was Ushijima lol
Oikawa and Iwa are a great pair.
Like i dont even mean this in a shippy way. Just they make such a good team, are a good match set.

I like how Haikyuu sets up "villians"/antagonists only to have them become likable/sympathetic just in time to set up the next one, like: first dateko, then seijoh, and next shiratorizawa
They are never meant to be villains but rather just players to be careful about.
I don't know about most of the actual players from Shiratorizawa, but I definitely felt bad for Washijo-sensei. He had what was probably less than 10 minutes of backstory but it broke my heart.

Benkei!
I just read a fanfic about his nickname 'ushiwaka' and the parallels and distinctions between the samurai and general and ushijima it was good :"

Next season is pure action! Super hype for what’s next!
Manga readers know how much that “worthless pride” scene really matters.
For real. I usually don’t like it when reactors pause too much but coach tends to miss a lot of dialogue while he’s commentating
i agree, it can also be a bit hard to catch both the subtitles and the commentary at the same time
Ushiwaka is a nickname created from his full name - Ushijima Wakatoshi.
21:59 lol that wasn't Ushijima saying it's sad Seijou won't be in the finals. That was just a co-host announcer

It basically means just someone in the background. Usually just there to stand around.
" Don't you ever forget my worthless pride " chills.....
Yeah. Exactly. Which frustrates me because Coach didn't seem to pick up on and just saw him on a surface level or had a bad first impression
i agree! unfortunately, it seems coach Donny is convinced that there's only one kind of captain that's 100% acceptable when one of the most interesting things in Haikyuu is how, what works for some teams, might not work for others (like Kageyama being the best setter for Karasuno, but otherwise, not so much?...). basically, imo, Oikawa is the perfect captain for a team like Seijoh just as much as Daichi is the perfect captain for a team like Karasuno. different teams, different dynamics, different needs. Haikyuu does a great job of showing that diversity and i hope coach learns to embrace that aspect of it as well.
Haikyuu is just so great to watch over and over again because you get to discover little details
That hard slap from Oikawa always give me the chills 😬😬😬
Hey,
there is an additional OVA (Original Video Animation), where you can see the post-game experience of Seijoh's team.

@@ElevateYourselfOfficial Coach, here is the link, you can use this! ua-cam.com/video/Lao54_hFaA0/v-deo.html
His name is USHIjima WAKAtoshi. The nickname is just both names combined :)
I just remembered that S3 is where these guys start getting superhero names and powers. Super ace, super libero, Guess monster, the samurai. Fun stuff
The part of "Too bad we wont see Seijoh in the finals" was said by one of the news casters, cuz they were expecting Seijoh to win the match and go to the finals
"don't ignore pain, im not saying go punch urself in the face" lmao i died
I was actually rubbing my face with my fist when he said that
14:31 yes right, it was one of oikawa's frustrations, aside from never winning against shiratorizawa, oikawa knew kageyama is a genius that is exponentially growing. that's why he had to work much harder than he needed to as seen from his flashbacks.
Those people Kageyama met after the bathroom scene was his old teammates from middle school, who refused to follow him in the end.
this is just very small detail 😅 but I love the glance at 7:03 that Oikawa gives to Iwaizumi, which shows Oikawa tries to wait for Iwa-chan to feel better and ready to thank the audiences before he says the greeting 💕
They call him Ushiwaka because his full name is Ushijima Wakatoshi. So alot of people nickname him Ushiwaka since that was the name of famous badass Japanese samurai general in japanese history.
The aoba johsai extra special scene is only around 6mins long coach so I hope you can just combined it with season 3 episode 1
The moment we have all been waiting for since season 1. Coach Donny changing his opinion on oikawa!
I better get myself ready- twice! when coach danny started to upload every episode of season 3 🙌🏻💥
If I could play for any coach aside for Ukai, I would definitely would want to play for Sejoh's coach. He's very straightforward and honest, just an overall great mentor. Kids definitely need more coaches like that out there.
Still really sad to see it's the last game for Toru Oikawa since he's already a 3rd yr..
“A lot of volleyball action there”
Haha, coach don’t worry the entire season IS volleyball action.
some of my favourite moments in haikyuu are when karasuno lose to oikawa the first time and they all eat and cry their eyes out and then oikawa’s team loses and they really mourn the loss in the same way
Hi Coach! I just wanted to say that this is the last tournament the current third years can participate in. I love your commentary as always!
Coach remembered ushijima’s team season 3 is my favourite season can’t wait let’s go so hyped!!!
Lol
@@ElevateYourselfOfficial if only I didn't have to go to work so I could marathon ur Olympic commentaries lol
Super excited for season 3, I hope you will do another end of season discussion with Victoria Garrick again as that was really entertaining last time and she is one week away from finishing season 2 I think.
Keep up the great work! Much love
Whaaaat, I wasn't expecting it and now I am so happy on Sunday. Thanks coach!
Wow, i thought that with the olympic content the haikyuu reaction was going to be aired next week. Thank you, coach!
Perfect timing I was just settling down with some food looking for something to watch :D
god, i’ve watched probably every episode of your haikyuu reactions, how tf did it take me until almost season 3 to realize you upload them every saturday and not just at random 😭😂
It's crazy that it's been almost a year watching your reactions, it's gonna be sad when you end the series
(I'm so glad I was able to stay awake til 2am to see all of it!)
I appreciate your story about the player that became a manager.
Oh yeah Coach there is an OVA for this season as well. It revolves around ep 2-4 I think just before the training camp.
Oikawa is a highly respected volleyball player within his peers and his team. There’s great banter between them, but while he can have a relaxed demeanour at times, everyone can see how serious he is at his craft and how hard he’s worked to become the player he is. Nishinoya and Tanaka can also act like goofballs but don’t get the hate from coach Donny as Oikawa does 😂😅
Tanaka and noya are not team captains. That’s why Donny is more critical of oikawa since he leads the team
I'm fine if he doesn't like him if he understood him.
oikawa bootlickers😭
A lot of characters and moments I'd love to hear your opinion on.
be ready coach...season 3 is movie quality ....
Oh my gosh this brought back memories of seeing my sister featured on cal high sports and being so excited
i always like how you talk about pain amd regret cause i'm afraid of feeling them so i tend to push th back. i know that i need but i'm just scared lmao. ao you coach mentioned few more times is slowly motivating me
I've always thought that Oikawa was there for the save on time. It's just that the ball hit the blocker's finger, and gave the ball a spin. Hence that, instead of receiving it, it bounced off K-pops hand instead.
I just saw this notification before I was about to board the plane back home! So hyped!
It's actually the commentator who said that it's sad not seeing Seijoh in the finals and not Ushijima!
Yeah, its the commentators being rude not ushiwaka. He would never lol
What I love with Haikyuu is every character they try to give a back story (even the managers and the bench players)
