Someone once pointed this out to me but the words "this position, this timing, this angle" harkens back to Karasuno's match against Aoba Johsai. At the end of the first match Kageyama sets Hinata with those exact words and it got blocked just like this. Now they're on the other side of that situation and everything comes full circle. It's just one of the many poetic parts of Haikyuu.

Also to what Tsukishima said about Hinata and Kageyamabeing the only two to predict the play: in the moment where the yellow undertone comes in, the flashes to Tanaka, Tsukishima, Daichi, and Asahi are the moments they all realized what was about to happen, but even during Osamu’s approach, you’ll see Hinata and Kageyama already in position for the quick (the scene before where Daichi was getting up you see where Kageyama realized and rushed over to Hinata’s side)

To me, this line represents the arrogance of the freak quick. Thinking that just because the position, timing, and angle are perfect that it will be unstoppable. Kageyama and Hinata have already learned this lesson from their bitter defeat against Aoba Josai, but the Miya Twins have yet to and get drunk on the power of the quick

Inarizaki's motto is "we dont need the memories"
The irony lies in the fact that Hinata and Kageyama blocked the twin's last attack just the same way they got blocked in the first official game against Seijoh which means they only succeeded through memories. That's why Tsukki said "Speed is good, but it's not invincible. They knew that a little better than everyone else."

@@gabrielsousa959 Nah, it's actually very accurate because this entire match, particularly this scene, has been directly challenging the blindspot in the motto of Inarizaki and the twins who embody the quote. Kita has already mentioned before he doesn't agree with their motto because there are a lot of memories and past experiences that make who they are today, and now Karasuno has hit that nail on the coffin by blocking the same quick that was once stopped by Seijoh. However on the flip side, it does still create a blindspot that Kita and Karasuno jab at. I love how this episode is the culmination of everyone's journey from the beginning. Most people also forget that Inarizaki came 2nd in the last Summer Inter-High Nationals (the one Shiratorizawa qualified to at the end of Season 1, after beating Seijoh). Karasuno pulled off an absolute upset for all those who don't know what they went through.
Firstly, the Hinata and Kageyama block on the minus tempo quick is super poetic as that was how they lost to Seijoh in season 1. Tsuki also shows all of his newfound passion for Volleyball by diving, even though he is incredibly tired. Tanaka takes that leap from being just aggressive and loud to being composed with a rebound setback (and that line shot last episode). Asahi moves forward from just being that "tall strong guy". And of course, who could forget Hinata's recieve and high first-touch. Hinata, who has always been about speed, is ready to face the 2nd best high school team head-on.
There is so much involved in their win, and I love Tsuki's commentary at the end about how "everyone was surprised, but we weren't" because they knew the hardships firsthand. Brilliant episode.
Also excellent work from your team, Coach! If I remember correctly, you talked about them beating James Logan before, but the result still should be praised. They did what Oikawa couldn't against a dominant rival. We're proud of all of them, and you too, Coach!

Ah but you see, Hinata still has one lesson left to learn, one that will be taught after the grueling match against Kamomedai at the quarterfinals. Because after going all out for nearly 6 full sets counting both matches, what takes him out was recklessness. Had he rested, slept or eaten something in between the matches, he probably wouldn’t have gotten that fever, and karasuno wouldn’t have collapsed after losing its strongest blocker to Injury and fastest attacker to sickness, and lost.

I think it's easy to overlook because of everything coming after it, but I love Tsukishima funneling the hit to Hinata. It's such a great moment, specifically because it's these two, who have bickered with each other since day 1, finally acknowledging and trusting the other (though silent and begrudgingly of course haha).
One other thing that I didn't hear you mention is Asahi's comment about how, even though he is jealous of the first years who will get to keep hitting Kageyama's sets, he also feels sorry for them. To have flawless sets come to you time and time again is great, but it also adds an incredible amount of pressure - how could you do any less than score with a perfect set? It's like what Tanaka said about Kageyama trusting him before he hit his line shot - it's not just encouragement, it's a threat of trust; show the other team why I'm setting you.
Also, fun fact since you mentioned the soundtrack, the name of the track that starts playing just after Tsukki serves Aran short is "Anti-Miracle", going along with what Coach Ukai said about not needing any miracles. That whole scene did such a fantastic job of conveying the stress and panic of speed, with the edges of the screen darkening steadily over time, Kageyama falling over after setting Tanaka, Suga and Yamaguchi yelling "One more, one more!" It all creates such an atmosphere of panic that it makes the bright, shining light when Hinata sets the ball high that much more refreshing. Also I love that you picked up on the "Let's take it easy" callback from part 1 of season 4! That was Hyakuzawa he said that to originally.

I love the final quick so much, because it mirrors the first season. "This position. This timing. This angle. Perfect!" is what Kageyama not only says when they FIRST ever did the freak quick, but also during the final play of the Aoba Johsai match that they lost in the first season. The exact reverse situation, a team putting everything on the minus tempo quick, but this time Hinata and Kageyama were the ones able to block it. Just pure poetry. I don't know if it's intentional or not, and not so poetic as this. But the point immediately before the last.
Kageyama dumps the ball and looks at Atsumu{?}, and the screen fades to Osamu's green (the same green hue background used when they were using "twin sense")
Meaning Atsumu was already planning on using the freak quick from that point on. Just a tiny bit of foreshadowing, that seemed super small, but also super cool to me!
Could me Osamu just "mentally" calling for the ball too. OR both wanting to do it!

  • @rachielle_
    @rachielle_ 2 роки тому +135

During the quick sequence when Ukai told the team to slow down, the screen is also darkening from each corner of the frame. It's getting even darker, slowly blurring our view to the players, referring to how the speed is a curse, that strangle us, to make us viewers got the feelings of that curse of speed. And then, when Hinata says "All right!" and pass the ball up high as the first touch, so does the screen lightens up into normal brightness, symboling "Just take it easy," as Hinata already learned and taught that to Hyakuzawa in early episodes of season 4. Also as we all have known, Hinata all this time being "The Sun" to brightens up the team's mood, and he did it again to make his team slow down and take it easy.
Indeed, this episode and the whole rallies are just amazing!

  • @TrianaNero
    @TrianaNero 2 роки тому +192

It's such a tiny detail, but I love it how both Atsumu distinguishes between "having trust/faith in each other" and "just thinking [knowing] that the ball will come/the spiker will be there" when describing Hinata's and Kageyama's combination, admiring how natural it is for them to always give 100%. Funnily enough, Osamu asking "what's so weird about that?" is so well-placed here - because those are exactly the words Osamu used to describe his own combination with Atsumu, too. "I don't really trust Tsumu, but I don't need that. I know the ball will come". A yet another parallel between Kageyama&Hinata and Atsumu&Osamu, showing how their relationships mirror one another in quite a few ways.
Asahi "feeling sorry" for the spikers who'll be hitting Kageyama's tosses from now on - a yet another reference to Kageyama's "threat of trust" style of play from the previous episode, with him putting his absolute trust in his spikers and giving them his all in an intense, [royally] demanding way.

This is basically Spiker's version of "Get the damn point". Atsumu knows his tosses are top tier and any spiker who can't score with those are just bad, which basically gives him a full reign over court as a setter. But since Hinata jumps with full intention to hit a ball, he is basically demanding ball to come his way, which put a lot of pressure on Setter, who is already trying to give best tosses they can. "You'll bring me the toss i want, don't you?".
And Osamu's remark is basically an admition that he's been doing same to Atsumu.
Also Kageyama reacting this way is because previous toss wasn't good, but Hinata still scored and didn't even care that toss was bad, which made Hinata a better player in this combination, which made Kageyama very conscious about his plays. Hinata pretty much forced Kageyama to play better and by giving a better toss next time he "won" since he got back his authority as a setter with a good toss.

I love how Coach Ukai narrates that too much speed can make players blind, and the animators show exactly that during the last sequence.
You probably didn’t notice but while there was a close up on every players face as the twins were performing the last quick they did not show Hinata or Kagayama. To us and the players it seemed like they just appeared to block the ball out of nowhere. This is to show that the twins were so blinded by the speed of the freak quick that they didn’t even notice the block forming until it was too late, just like Hinata and Kagayama didn’t notice the block until it was too late against Seijoh in season one.
This is the exact opposite to the last point against Seijoh in season two when we as the audience see a close up of the block being formed, showing that Hinata and Kagayama have learned how to see even when going so fast. I love the evolution throughout the entire series.

    Random fact when you rewatch:
If you ever wondered why the jersey's have a picture of a foot on it followed by the letters "ics", its to represent the Japanese sporting company ASICS. Foot in Japanese is Ashi, which combined with "ics" gives you "Ashics" or the Japanese pronounciation for ASICS. For obvious reasons, they couldn't use the actual ASICS logo on the player's jersey's so this was a creative and approproate way to get around it from the start.

I absolutely love Hinata's "take it easy" moment in this episode. Many people love to talk about him sneaking into the 1st year's camp in the beginning of the season being "cringe" or so embarrassing they can't watch it... I think that's bull. Yeah, he took a risk and deal with a lot of embarrassment and humiliation because he did that, but look at all he learned. From being a better receiver to other aspects of the game that he hadn't previously thought about. He learned SO much and it made Karasuno a stronger team.
I also love Yahaba pounding on the table, yelling at the tv near the end of the game. It always struck me as such a "real" thing that people do when watching sports.

This position, this timing, this angle. It's perfect!
We first hear this from Kageyama, on the 3x3 against Daichi, Tsuki and Yamaguchi. And, more prominently, in the last play against Aoba Josai, where they lost because Oikawa blocked them.
The quick is an amazing tool. It's fast, it's flashy, it's intimidating. But it is not unstoppable. Of course Kageyama and Hinata know that most of all. The Miya twins fell for the allure of the quick, ans were defeated by the creators of it, using the sting of their defeat against Seijo to win now against Inarizaki.
Amazing storytelling. Amazing character development. This hype can rival any battle anime, no cap.

and the fact that in the beginning, of the seasons, all he thinks about it just being a spiker who just keeps on hitting and throughout all of the training and learning, he became a great receiver .

It's quite disappointing that he didn't understand the significance of that scene. Coach Ukai was yelling "Slow down,. slow down" while everyone was in a rush and then Hinata yelled out "Got it!" and bumped the ball really high. This bump and the dig from 4x22 is the huge payoff of Hinata's training arc this season.

Everyone explained already how poetic that last block was but I also want to add how this is a "BUT..." to Inarizaki's motto.
"We don't need the memories" but the twins got blocked on their last quick because they didn't have the experience with the quick that Kageyama and Hinata did. They fell into the same trap of doing the quick because it's really fast and cool without realizing that it's not invincible.
Kageyana and Hinata worked all this time on developing how they use their quick based on the frustration they felt losing to Aoba Johsai.

All the criticism, all the losses, all the hard work has been paid back in just this very simple moment. He is always the one who calms everyone down when they have a tough match, and here he is again, just smiling so brightly and getting the ball so easily and fluently, completely different from the Hinata from the beginning. I just love him so much!!

This episode is so good ive been waiting for it. From Tsuki trusting Hinata to pick up the ball after he funnels it, to Hinata with the high pass letting his team take it easy, to Tsuki diving for a ball, to the entire final rally is just so intense I never get bored of it.
I'm so happy you picked up on it, to see tsuki dive for a ball after where he was mentally at the beginning of the show is so insane. Its not a very flashy moment but it just shows how far hes come and how invensted he is now in the team that he can put that much effort into the game.
And that final rally ending with hinata and kageyama blocking the twins quick, seeing the ball hit the ground through kitas eye reflection, and tsukis whole inner monologue after it was all over just gives me goosebumps everytime. That final rally is probably my favorite moment in the entire show. Oh and the music during the final rally has got to be my favorite song from the show as well, goosebumps everytime.

Then you can hear every single Karasuno players breathe, "taking this easy". So many story and character beats are inspired such as the hyperactive rookie protagonist with red hair, and the hyper talented, cool black haired rival deuteragonist.
It's no exaggeration to say that slam dunk is the dragon ball of sports anime and is legendary in its own right. A fun side note, the protagonists jersey number is briefly the same as Dennis rodman (hence his aggressive defense) while the talented deuteragonist has the same as Michael Jordan!

What I loved about the scene leading up to Hinata's pass is the little details in the animation and story telling. Everyone in karasuno is rushing and tryna speed things up because they're trying to finish the match quickly with this last point. So the animators make the scene darker and harder to see to show that sometimes when you rush things you can't see everything as clear compared to when you try to relax a little and slow it down. Then when Hinata gives a nice and high pass it let's everyone know to take it easy and the animation goes bright and clear showing that it's okay and just chill out let's get ourselves together and into better positions.

Kita's Monster's Ball speech is one of my favourite monologues in all of Haikyuu and the theme of this "Monster Generation" becomes more and more prevalent as the series goes on. I'm so glad you enjoyed it too!
Fun fact about the rally that ends with Asahi's blockout: the track that plays in the background during this rally is called "Hunger is Contagious" which is a callback to Osamu's monologue last episode about how Hinata plays volleyball like he's enjoying a good meal, and how that hunger spreads to his teammates. But in addition to that the composer, Yuki Hayashi said about the song "So what happens if two interesting teams end up playing each other? I think it's perfect for the climax of the game."
And this final rally is probably my favourite one that's been animated so far. Of course there's the amazing callback of Atsumu saying the exact same line as Kageyama during the first Seijoh match and both Kageyama and Hinata learning from that defeat to win here, but one of my favourite things about this final point is the character-by-character flash of Inarizaki's "we don't need the memories" banner right before Atsumu sets the ball. Yes this point proved that speed isn't the end all be all and that's the lesson that Hinata and Kageyama have learned from experience, but to me that showing of the banner was like a last defiant shout of Inarizaki's philosophy, and how Atsumu and Osamu continue to constantly challenge themselves to try new things and improve even if they're backed into a corner. They're honestly two of my favourite characters in the series.
Tsukki's save was incredible too. He's someone who described volleyball as "just a club" before. Karasuno was up by 1 point, they wouldn't have lost if they dropped that ball. The old Tsukki probably would have shrugged it off and been like "it's not worth the effort" but now he's making a diving one handed save and ends up buying enough time for Daichi to send the ball back over. I absolutely love his growth.

I recomend everybody to rewatch the final point and see how it goes from an intense beat to the soothing music when hinata passes (same sound as the soothing msic when he recieves against aran), back to the intense music and finally to an remix of the origional theme song of the show "above" to a new addapted version when hinata and kageyama blocked, just like how they played "battle of concepts" in the final point in shiritorizawa. The fact all of these songs fit together so nicley is insanly impressive and I often listen to the ovas like "seagulls" and "battle of concepts to get myself hyped up.

Y'know, I've been watching since the very first episode and I have to say that this season is very special for me. Ever since my friends got me to play volleyball in middle school and introduced me to Haikyuu, I had this drive to want to jump like Hinata and spike. Now that I reached High School as a freshman with my last game tomorrow, I have to say that Volleyball shaped my entire year. I got to meet alot of amazing, strong players, new friends, and new experiences. Hinata's growth over season 4 inspired me to become much better, and playing on the court made me realize there are other things than just jumping high and getting a kill. Seeing most of the people I met go due to them being Seniors or going to play for other schools makes me sad, but I have room to grow and this hunger to keep playing volleyball.

There was a previous comment that was made about the music and how the composer Yuki Hayashi not only keeps similar themes and motifs, but also evolves the music by transmuting and laying new tempos and instruments in these high caliber moments. If you listen to the final points of Aoba Johsai, Shiratorizawa, and Inarizaki matches, the base theme of the instrumentals are very similar, but as the series progresses new instruments and tempos are layered and used to alter it until it culminates into the final point against Inarizaki. It just Perfectly mimics the Journey that Karasuno has made, layering new techniques and bonds that got them to this far! Coach Donny, I've been watching your reaction videos since day 1. So yeah, Kageyama, Atsumu and Hinata for example, but not really players like Asahi or even Osamu who lack that drive, hence why Osamu tells Atsumu that they're basically even in ability but Atsumu was chosen for the all japan camp because he loves the sport a tiny bit more.

I'm so happy that you enjoyed that Final Rally. It's my personal favorite moment of Haikyuu in general and it's just so beautifully done. The moment when Yahaba was banging on the table screaming to go faster just gets me hyped every time I hear it. The voice acting from him is astounding.
And on the note of what episodes to pay attention to the music on...
    THIS ONE...ABSOLUTELY THIS ONE

My absolute favorite moment in this episode is that high lob pass that Hinata does, not too sure why, I guess because its a huge opportunity for Hinata to show off how much of an incredibly rounded player he's become, like it's kind of cathartic in a way.

Whats awesome is that when the twin says "This postition...This timing...This angle...It's perfect!" it was the same thing Kageyama said to himself when Karasuno first lost to Aoba Johsai.

A note that when Kita's speech was going on, they cut to Oikawa to show the difference between them. Like Oikawa was intimidated and angry at genius players while Kita thinks putting genius players on a pedestal is rude. They both know genius is the result of hard work but have different reactions to the fact.
For the rewatch I would love if you can count the amount of times Ennoshita, Kinoshita and Narita appears in the background! Or how many secondary characters like Iwai-chan appears I think that'll be fun haha. My favorite music moment would be "Battle of concepts" that's one of my favorite tracks. It's the match point between Shiratorizawa and Karasuno, it really feels like we're going to save the world haha.
I was so worried coach would never get to this point, put off by the season 4 animation or getting bored of the series part way though like some of my friends. I just want to say Season 5, whenever the animators chose to bless us with it is even more hype!

It was cool to hear you refer to Street Fighter in this video. I never played volleyball beyond a handful of pickup games in college, but Haikyuu is one of my favorite shows of all time. I played soccer in college, but ultimately had to quit due to a bunch of injuries. Even still, competition is a huge driving force for me. Losing the ability to compete in soccer hurt, but I was able to reconnect with that competition through Fighting games similar to Street Fighter.
While watching Haikyuu, there were many times when I remember thinking the interactions in Volleyball are surprisingly similar to those in fighting games. An example of this is how some people refer to fighting games as being "turn-based" but with ways to extend the length of that turn or take it back through various tactical decisions. Things like going for a wipe against a block so that you can get another opportunity for your team to hit come to mind for me.
I've only been seriously competing at fighting games for about a year now, but through watching your reaction videos I've actually been able to develop a stronger mental game as well as gain new perspectives on competition. Keep up the amazing work, Coach 💫‼

Very nice reaction Coach as always, although i was waiting on a bigger reaction to the whole "speed is a curse" sequence, i think there is a lot to talk about it, i would very much like it if you could go back to it next week and appreciate all the details, the speech and the borders of the screen getting darker and darker just to reveal a big light once HInata get the pass, hinting to him being the sun again. Can't wait for next week and the whole rewatch, greetings from France !

Coach I don’t know if you noticed but during the scene where Hinata dug Rintaro’s spike, you can notice there’s like steam coming from the part of his arm where he received the ball. And also I love the commentary cause you can definitely feel that they are pumped up.

You missed to breathe in the best part of Inarizaki vs Karasuno on this one. That Hinata “Orayt” pass amidst all the chaos is so emotional and proceeds to show how much he’s grown.

I have been WAITING for this episode's reaction for so long! I love this season and these episodes featuring Inarizaki. This episode is so beautiful with the way they show Tsukki believing in Hinata to be there for the dig. Hinata's "Let's take it easy!" moment is so beautiful and well illustrated. This is my MOST favorite episode of the series.

I absolutely love how the screen kinda darkens in the corners more and more the faster and more rushed our karasuno boys play. We all know what it's like to be panicked and rushed -- you feel like your field of vision is very small and you just can't really look at the grand scheme of things anymore. I think the visuals represent that feeling very well. And then, with Hinata receiving the ball and getting it up high, they can all slow down and kinda relax for a bit- Their vision broadens again, and that's visualised by the sunshine seen after Hinata's pass. It's easily one of my favourite moments of the series.
One of my other favourites is Hinata and Kageyama blocking the twin's quick in the end. They are the ones who invented the freak quick, so to see them block their very own special weapon that was "stolen" from them was just so cool.
