When Tendou said "how creepy" and Ushijima "I hate it" they were referring to Hinata's unwavering hunger for the game and willpower to constantly learn and improve despite the obstacles. They weren't hating on him or being disrespectful, on the contrary they were impressed by him. Ushijima hates that he feels like he lost to Hinata's mental strength/love for the game
Just to add, Japan is a bit more 'brutal' with their insults/jokes/words, compared to the west. For example their excessive use of baka (idiot). But for them thats normal, similar to how Europeans tend to be blunter than North Americans. So while it might seem worse from the wording to us, once you put it into the context of a Japanese person its no worse than a mild response or a normal ribbing. So for example, depending on the context, someone saying baka is similar to a North American going "Are you serious?" or "Come on..." or something along those levels. Can also be worse in some situations but thats no different from English. So entirely about the context.
Also I think the bit where he talks about Tsukki leaving food was referring to him being a small eater, not that he was leaving food for Hinata. Tsukki not eating enough has been referenced before at the earlier training camp.
@@canadannoko I totally agree although in this specific instance I think it's rather a semantic issue: "kimochi waruii" (sorry if I transliterated it wrong, but you get the expression I'm talking about i hope) stands for "what a bad feeling/ this is disgusting/creepy" but it's also used in a broader context of "this gives me chills/had an impression on me" in a not so necessarly negative way, which subtitles often fail to convey I feel.
That moment where Kageyama sets but no one goes for the ball is really interesting. It's not really clear in the anime, unlike in the manga, but Kageyama was starting to get into the game and he tried to do the Freak quick out of habit even tho Hinata wasnt even in the game. For the other characters (that you will start to know in later episodes), hearing Kageyama say "sorry, force of habit" must have been pretty scary haha, as it meant that this crazy fast set was pretty casual for Kags. That's why the head coach thought this set meant "of course you're that far into the approach"
After school clubs (such as volleyball) are a really big thing in Japan, to the point where it's looked down as a negative if you just go home after school. There are a TON of different clubs not just for athletics, but various cultural aspects too like art, flower arranging tea ceremony, and more. As such, there isn't necessarily enough staff to supervise them all. Remember at the beginning before Coach Ukai showed up? Takeda-sensei is in charge of the Volleyball club, but he's not actually there to oversee it most of the time. Heck, Coach Ukai isn't even part of the school staff, which is why Takeda is the one who calls timeouts during games.
Each club usually has a designated "manager" or "key holder" that can lock up and open up equipment rooms, in season 1 Tanaka was able to open the gym early for Hinata and Kageyama to practice in because he got it from I think Suga?. If there's a cultural difference it's that the kids in Japan take roles like this more seriously and thus adults have greater trust in them, especially the "older" kids like 3rd years.
For me it seems like needing a supervisor at all times is a cultural thing of US, in Mexico it is fine to be without adults in a gym and I also haven't heard any other place other than the US to have that weird requirement
@@gatito34 Maybe it's a new thing in the US, because I was in the Track & Field and Basketball team. When the coach aren't there we set up on our own and practice.
If you notice, there's a lot of times they focus on Dr. Wiley without him saying anything. It's fun to remember that he doesn't say anything when his players do something right but shout a lot at players who he has high expectations of like Goshiki or Tendou! So contrast his shouting at Hinata at the start of camp and him just being silent as Hinata started trying to read the ball expect for that time Hinata got distracted on the court. What an old school coach 😂 Compliments won't kill you, Coach Washijo (Dr. Wily)... but a lot of his players like him enough so it's still a fun fact i guess
Coach Washijo became a great coach because he was always on the sidelines watching and processing and that’s way he let Hinata stay he was tasting him to see if he had the will and the patience to evolve he wasn’t bullying him he was trying to see if Hinata worthy of putting his trust in him and I think Hinata surpassed his expectations
@@hadeelziad1056 there's a lot of facets about Coach Washijo that I wanted to write but it'd be an essay 😂 but yes! i always believed him assigning hinata to be a ball boy is more about putting him on the right track of what he should be working on. It was up to Hinata to find what he should be working on as an exercise of self-reflection for personal growth. Him not saying anything is his acknowledgement that Hinata is on the right track~ I just wanted to express amusement about his tight lips for good work but loud mouth for scolding. I agree that it might as well be a test if Hinata really does have the potential to go far by being able to find what he should be working on to be better. And I too think this part really drove deep how much more growth Hinata can have and Washijo's expectations of Hinata really jumped from here on. As Furudate-sensei said, Coach Washijo is Haikyuu's biggest tsundere!
19:00 I've taught in Japan for several years, but it's 100% a normal thing for student athletes to be by themselves in the gym. In fact, even in "middle school" ("junior high," 中学校), it's very common for sports clubs to start and end their practices without adult supervision. It's actually part of an intentional initiative called "sougou kyouiku" (総合教育, "holistic education"), where the goal is to give K-12 students the chance in low-stakes situations to have adult-like responsibility. If something goes badly, there are adults nearby to clean up, but if you never give people the chance to take charge, then the thought is that they won't learn how to take care of a space on their own.
Wow really? Then it must be really dependent on the school. Right now I study in university in Japan and it is normal for us to use gym without supervisor but when I was in college(高等専門学校) we couldn’t use the gym without a teacher or staff member and I actually got in trouble with my Malaysian senpai. We thought it would be okay since both of us were abroad students who were adult (age 21). But the rules of the school didn’t play favor for us didn’t matter the age or class we actually needed someone to supervise us preferably PE teacher whenever someone is using the gym.
What at 16:30 Ushijima meant is that Hinata created this opportunity for himself when he's not chosen and he's probably going to have to face this struggle in the future (not chosen because of his height, doing it anyways). That by not taking it easy on him they didn't want to baby him because it'll be even harder in the future.
Indeed bec he's a shorter player, and it will be sort of a disadvantage. Just like what coach Washijo said, the higher his goal the more arduous his climb will be.. This opportunity to be a ball boy is one of the best things that happened to Hinata. Coach Washijo was not only challenging him but giving him glimpse of what chances he would be denied of if he doesn't improve.
I love how it's Ushijima who got it right away even though he's the opposite of Hinata. He can look at a player so different from him but still see their career path and struggle from his own experience. So knowledgable and mature. It's like what you get from coaches and professional players.
He is not talking about Tsukki leaving food for Hinata, but about his small appetite. In season two Tsukki and Kenma both eat little and claimed they're full. But when Daichi and other senpais, he is usually being forced to eat more. But i. the camp where no senpai is around, Hinata knows Tsukki gonna have leftovers with his meal unfinished. And he is worried about that, like an older brother, wondering if the little bro has behave well and finish his meal
Sorry if Coach Donny had already known, but the white haired boy is not Bokuto but in fact is a new character name Hoshiumi Korai. Just wanted to point it out so no one gets it wrong
The development of hinata's skill during this camp was beyond expectations. Just imagine how much he would have developed his skills and knowledge if he received even the tiniest bit of inputs and information from the Coach of training camp.
I think it was something of a test and lesson by the old coach. He wanted to see if Hinata was both smart enough and determined enough to succeed to figure these things out on his own. Because Hinata lacks the size and power expected from a hitter, he's always going to be overlooked and doubted. Hinata needed to understand that and show that he was mentally strong enough to not only withstand that, but find a way to thrive despite it. He also needed to show that he could be smart enough to think his way around problems to make up for his physical deficiencies. Those are lessons that I don't think a coach can really teach.
That's why what Washijo said that without Kageyama he's basically useless, but he has the talent to learn, which should be his job instead of just saying he's nothing and not developing them.
In 33:30 , when kageyama messed up the set, the receive was good, so he automatically set the freak quick meant for hinata, forgetting that hinata wasn't there and he was at youth camp.
I have so many things to say about this episode! This episode is actually one of my favourite episodes because it shows how Hinata is finally growing and thinking about the kind of volleyball player he wants to be. He is beginning to process the game and understand that not everything is about jumping high and spiking, and that every little thing counts to make him a good volleyball player, even his own diet nutrition intake. I love that he approached coach Ukai about what kind of food he should eat, and remembered coach’s words about having a good meal at home, which also eased coach Ukai’s worries that he is restricting Hinata’s growth, and let coach Ukai know that Hinata is absorbing all the information he needs as a volleyball player and that he is ready to challenge himself and improve himself. I love the fact that everyone in this episode is affected by Hinata’s drive and concentration in his actions, and although he is not showcasing his skillset in the match, his drive to make himself improve and learn from the other great players around him is actually motivating other players to put in the effort to do better. This is why they feel ‘uncomfortable’ around Hinata, because he is always looking for ways to improve and that intense drive might be what they are not used to seeing. This brings me back to Tendou’s words in S3, Hinata is ‘enigmatic’, and ‘things that you can’t understand are scary’. Oof this was a long one. Thanks for coming to my ted talk 😂
Honestly I loved this whole part of the first season way more than I thought I would - The part with Hyakuzawa next episode is probably one of my favorites
Can I just say, the new editor is doing an amazing job, all the animation add on's and social media on-screen plug's are sick. (I know for most people It's no big deal but for a person that doesn't edit or anything like that its preety cool).
22:30 Actually, Hinata was simply worried for Tsukishima, not saying that he leaves food for people. It's a small thing that's been shown throughout the series, but Tsukishima eats less than everyone.
This is probably my favorite pre-tournament episode. Hinata’s development sky rockets, but most importantly: the way Hinata casually calls coach Ukai, even being late at night, to get some nutrition advertise, and Ukai delivers it with a smile on his face, showing how proud he is with Hinata giving his all to evolve. It’s such a nice coach-athlete relationship, I just love it all about it.
Hi Coach! I taught high school students in Miyagi, the prefecture Karasuno is in, and the teaching and student management philosophy in Japan, at least for public schools, is largely based on "hansei" or self-discipline. Children take responsibility over shared duties, such as cleaning the classroom, arranging books in the library, upkeep of club rooms, serving lunch, even cleaning bathrooms. It all integrates into raising children that are hard working, social, with physical strength and good work ethic. So they can be expected to be in the gyms or practice rooms alone, provided they have a leader. The club president or team captain would lead and maintain practice and are also expected to lock up, take the keys home or surrender it to the club advisor at the end of the day. Also, it may be important to note that while most high school classes in Japan end at 3 or 4, most children stay behind even as late as 7 or 8 for extra curricular activities such as clubs, music, sports or extra classes. Of course untoward things like bullying or accidents may happen. But the social pressure more likely will place blame on the person "injured" however that may be, unfortunately. Also, I think it is a distinctly American way of life to be both litigious and also wary of litigation. This is just a general opinion, but I would be surprised if any parent takes legal action to the school, rather than doubling down on disciplining the child instead.
@@hopewelch9421 It was a random assignment, I could have ended up anywhere, but it was great! Sendai is a huge city, but nowhere near as chaotic as Tokyo. There were quite a few other foreign English teachers back then, there likely are more now, as more schools take up extra English lessons
when Tendo said Hinata is creepy, he is talking about how this boy never gets beat down. It is his strong will and determination that makes you feel uncomfortable, especially when he is your rival. But this also make him an amazing opponent
What I find interesting is Dr. Wily has been off to the sidelines and calm when explaining to everyone else. The only times we see him really yell and scold is with Hinata...and his own Shiratorizawa players
I wanna point out many episodes ago maybe in S2 Coach gave the advice that "when playing you should look at the players not the ball" or something along those lines And guess what lesson Hinata learned in this episode, just goes to show how much the creator must've loved volleyball to have small details like this in his story
4:41 It's not that Tendo is not respecting Hinata, but that he feels somewhat intimidated by how Hinata still looks forwards with determination and hunger (I think) 4:48 It was Ushijima to sum that brief moment up from how I think it is meant: they are creeped out by how Hinata still has that fire in his eyes despite basically being side-lined and having one hurdle after another thrown in his way His growth and potential is scary/creepy 22:30 I think Tsukishima actually is skipping on extra portions the 2nd and 3rd years at Karasuno keep giving him They can sometimes act like mother hens and Tsukishima aint the type of guy who lets others tell him what to do and he doesnt wanna do it 25:27 Tokonami is actually the school where Daichi's friend is currently playing Karasuno and Tokonami played during the Inter-High in season 1 if I remember correctly It was the episode where we also got a few flashes from the Karasuno girl's team match "We'll never win unless we believe we can." was Daichi's quote, which motivated both his best friend and Michimiya (Karasuno girl's team captain and also girl, who has a crush on Daichi) I actually didn't realize until watching your reaction that it's the same team :D
I think the thing about Tsukishima is that he doesn't eat much to indicate he doesn't use as much energy/doesn't try as hard as the other members on the team, even after his "awakening." I think Japan usually equates eating with effort and such. The more you eat=the harder you're trying to get stronger. Someone else pointed out the theme this season seems to have about "hunger." Those who eat more are the ones who are hungrier/those who play more and harder are the ones who are hungrier to win and love the sport more. So I actually think it is to show how Tsukki doesn't have the same drive as the others, especially Hinata. Btw I also think the hunger and food theme could be examplified even in this episode where hinata for the first time questions his diet and nutritional needs, much like how he has finally started actively thinking about how he should play and position himself etc. He no longer eats whatever he can because he's hungry, (like the Burger he mentioned) just as he no longer chases the ball at all times but looks at the court and the players. (Less instinct/more thought.)
33:27 Yeah, Kageyama definitely just set for Hinata. He just got so into the game he just kinda fell back into old habits. It’s a real nice way to show how much he and Hinata have connected. And how much the two of them trust each other, because you know Hinata would definitely have been there to spike that one.
Hey coach did you notice the analogy of the interception scene with the hinata crow to the real hinata? First he wants to rush things and fly as high as fast as he can and fails or gets to a fast limit, which represents old hinata. While in the second scene the bird flys higher slowly improving, resulting in keeping the height and getting a good consistent result, which represents how hinata starts to approach the learning process now :) Maybe you got some words about that.
In Japan generally there is a lot of trust put into the students. Most of the classroom don’t have locks meaning that anyone can just go in and use them if they are free. Regarding the Gyms, you do need permission from the school but they do allow you to use it without supervision (as long as you don’t leave a mess obviously..). Hope this helps!
16:16 I love how Tendo is worried about Hinata and was willing to let him sleep there because he knows what is like to be an outcast and for people to put him aside. That shows just how a good and sympathetic person he is.
Seeing hinata's growth not only as a volleyball player, but as an athlete in general is so amazing. The guy is now studying his sport and how to properly eat as an athlete
reminds me how in the manga of hajime no ippo, ippo himself is finally through the same thing. such a nice feeling when these blockheads finally pause their everything and just study the sport inside-out
"He who climbs the ladder must begin at the botton" is an awesome line. I'm glad you took the time to highlight it. Also "there is no missed rep" applies to hinata perfectly. Keep track of EVERY SINGLE DETAIL he learns during this arc, nothing goes to waste.
Tsukishima's block may have been my favorite moment in Haikyuu, but this is my favorite episode. That moment where it all clicks for Hinata reminds me so much of the moment where my sport just clicked with me. You start noticing the nuances in people's play-style or how they execute a play differently from even the same players on their team and you're just in awe with the potential available to you and where you want to take yourself. It really is that moment when you sink that much deeper into your love for the game and they capture it beautifully. I rewatch this episode simply because of how it reminds me of those great times.
I don’t know if you will remember this, Coach, but in season 3 episode 6, when we saw daichi as a first year, we see him training his receives and analysis as a ball boy for the older players, saying “even by picking balls we can do something”. We even see the analogy of vines sticking you to the ground just like with Hinata. And that is how he began to be such a reliable receiver, It’s a small scene, but it is interesting to see the potential Hinata has gained by this role! Definitely one of my favorite plot details! Anyways love your insight! Thank you for your reactions 💕
The opening theme is also titled "Phoenix", suiting Hinata's rising from an un-appreciated, less skilled player to a more skilled and respected player by more characters.
Hmmmm I semi agree, though I think it's more of a rebirth thing where hinata was already this formidable player after beating shiratorizawa most people probably knew of karasuno's number 10, but then he goes to something that's beyond his power(sneaking into a camp he wasn't invited to) and affectively loses his status(dying like the Phoenix)and starts over, but he gets to use the do-over to learn and become even better at the game(like the Phoenix coming back to life even stronger than before)
"Phoenix" gives me chills bad and good. I started watching Haikyuu last year shortly before Season 4 part 2 started and I wasn't in the best mental state. Bus I Love this song
16:34 Ushiwaka was saying that Hinata will get into a situation where he will be not chosen again in the future. (things like, not getting a starting position for example) So he needs to work on that. He has to work harder to get those opportunities.
I personally thought that Dr Wily was a very interesting character in this arc, he "didn't see value" in Hinata because he's almost entirely instinctual, him making Hinata be the ball boy, feels sort of like a test of Hinata's drive as it was the perfect role for Hinata so search out what he was missing as a player, all while maintaining his hardass coaching facade.
The part at 36:20, what Kunimi (the Aoba Johsai boy) said isn't really translated properly in most official translations I've seen, but what he was actually trying to say is that, out of all of them at the training camp, only Hinata was acting like he was in an official match. Meaning that despite being a ball boy, he was the only one who wasn't treating practice like just practice. I think it speaks volumes about Hinata's amazing drive and thirst for improvement, and I love that everyone from the training camp participants to the coaches, and even including Ushiwaka and Tendou, acknowledge it.
Went back and rewatched this. lmao still cracked me up how Editor-san put that Hoshimi animation when Coach misidentified him as Bokuto. Props to Editor-san.
**Hinata literally suffers from pain** Coach: "Oh man, I love the humor in Haikyuu" **replays the scene @**37:26**** Coach is savage. Coach is so me after watching that scene. 🤣
As to whether teachers are required to supervise students during extracurriculars, I think this depends on the school, or even the club. I only spent 1 year in a Japanese highschool but from what I saw a lot of the responsibility was placed on the students, there were some things that would require a teacher/adult, like anything regarding travel, but my track team would often have unaccompanied practice, so long as the school was open and there were teachers on the premises it was fine. I heard that the baseball team, which was a "school sponsored" club, always had an adult present. I don't know the laws regarding this in Japan very well but I imagine it comes down to each individual school's charter and how involved their PTA gets.
33:07 when coach called Hoshiumi Bokuto and added his famous HUUUH?! AHAHAHAH, really loving the editor’s little add on’s to these reactions (also shoutout to the editor for being an amazing editor)
Don’t forget that the all-Japan training camp is for “15-16” years old. In preparation 2years from now, because when they turn 17&18 they will probably represent Japan in the “19-under” International Tournament. Bokuto is older that’s why him and Ushijima is not a part of that training camp anymore
So Coach, I saw you ask what Ushiwaka meant when he said, "The fact is, he wasn't chosen to be here. And something like this will probably happen again." This becomes more obvious as the show continues (and is made totally clear in the manga) but essentially, it's referring to Hinata's fate as a particularly short professional player. Sure, at the high school level on one individual team with almost no members and a perfect setter Hinata gets first pick as a regular, and gets used to that status on Karasuno, but the higher he intends to go after school (and remember, Hinata is aiming for the OLYMPICS), the more he'll be looked over in favour of taller players. Being totally realistic, the minor advantages gained from shorter height (weight jump timing, lighter and better balance) are almost entirely overshadowed by the immense benefits of height in Volleyball. If Hinata is put amongst 4 other players who have equal or even ever so slightly worse skill than Hinata, and a coach has to select 4 players, he'll get turned down immediately. This isn't predjudice, or ruthlessness... it's the job of a coach to find the best players to give his side the best chance of winning. To quote a certain character from the manga who's already been referenced several times in the anime, "Sports can be completely unfair, but they're also ruthlessly fair." Hinata can't sit back and be as good as everyone else, or even as good as the best. In order to achieve his dreams, he has to be BETTER. And while that's unfair (after all he didn't choose to be born short), it's also ruthlessly fair: if Hinata CAN prove his skills far superior to those around him, he MUST be chosen. It's that simple. Ushiwaka AND Coach Washijo are essentially showing Hinata that the world isn't like his bubble at Karasuno, and that if he intends to go pro one day and keep climbing, he'll have to never stop growing no matter what and keep polishing new skills. Which as it turns out, is exactly what Hinata loves about Volleyball in the first place. They're teaching him a hard lesson, but it's an important one to learn. All in all, and I say this despite disliking the overally animation direction of Season 4+ of the anime, this arc and onwards are what truly make Haikyuu special in terms of sports anime: it's a REAL depiction of sport, not just in terms of the actual play itself but also its place in soceity; it's pitfalls and its worth, and the best way to use it to enrich your life. I often reread from this point of the manga onwards just to keep myself on an even keel and keep facing my life head on. It's honestly the most inspirational work of fiction I've ever read, and this is coming from a BA Creative Writing who's read more than any sane man should.
When Hinata is talking about Tsukki "leaving food" whenever their senpais weren't watching, I believe he means that Tsukki just doesn't eat all of his food. Not that he leaves food for Hinata, haha.
25:22 Just wanted to point out that Tokonami is the same high school that Daichi’s friend Ikejiri went to and played volleyball for back in Season 1! Little fun fact.
Last Sunday I was playing volleyball with friends and at one point I managed to read to the attacker that he was going to make a feint and I could receive the ball without any problem; It felt pretty good to read the play and continue it.
This is my third time rewatching Haikyuu and only now I see the foreshadow of Hinata learning how to read spikes just like Daichi did and how he will get better at receiving
One thing most people dont get about Coach Washijou is that he is actually rooting for Hinata and expects the most from him (which will be explained why in a future arc). If you recall during the shiratorizawa match, *goshiki* was wondering why the coach was yelling at him the most and one of the third years tells him its because the coach expects the most from him, at least improvement wise. He is showing Hinata the same treatment here, by teaching him the most important aspect of improvement for a player like him. Since he is short, he wont be given the same opportunities as tall players (being scouted and stuff) if he isn't super good. Meaning he pretty much has to take initiative on his own improvement after high school. The fact that he is teaching Hinata this while helping him improve his fundamentals by being a ball boy is a HUGE help for Hinata but unfortunately, most of the fanbase doesnt see this and hate on washijou :(
Coach, one thing about Japan is that it's incredibly safe and community-minded ^_^ Students clean up after themselves and clean their school on regular rotation, people in general do not litter, crime rates are low so students are in charge of themselves in their after school activities. The idea is that if you are taking care of your own messes, then you are also less likely to make the mess and care for the community at large. Children as young as 4-5 years old go to school by themselves on public transportation. That's why even in Karasuno, the senpais have the keys to the gym and locker room and Hinata can commute (probably 1+ hour) by bike across a mountain to go to school by himself as a teenager.
I play for the girls team in my college's "department" (in Brazil it's different than the USA), but I always go to the boys trainings, even if I'm just there to serve, set or help the coach. They normally say that I'm the "little hungry one for volley" because I don't miss any chance I can get to play or train volleyball. I'm also always taking notes of everything coach Donny says so I can incorporate it into our trainings and I've noticed that my receives are a lot better. I just wish I wasn't 5'0 (1,55m for the rest of the world who doesn't speak imperial measurements)
Your editor did a great job on quoting a lot of wise words that you're saying Coach. I had screenshot the other amazing quote that you said last time that I really can relate too (about confidence). Keep it up, Editor-san.
@@JamesLightner ohh you're the editor?! Thanks a lot for your hard work and also the funny little memes you put here and there! Makes the reactions more engaging for us fans XD
When Tendou in the beginning says "how creepy". He's actually giving Hinata all the respect. All Tendou needed to see was Hinata's eyes to know he is super serious/focused on being the best ball boy he can be and to learn as much as he can there. Ushiwaka agrees because he understand Hinata's hunger to better and will do/try anything to achieve this goal. Just wanted to clear that up!
i love all of hinata's flashbacks of him interacting with his friends! he was always the pushy volleyball kid but he always valued his friends' time and repaid it in kind! honestly, same goes with all the strangers he interacts with too. look at him getting along with all these training camp players even tho he's uninvited xD
If the sun shines brighter, (hinata improving) more light reflects on the moon. (tsuki's improving) I think Tsuki's inferiority complex was kicking in again when he saw Hinata putting in a lot of effort. Maybe he felt that since hinata was putting in so much effort that he needs to do something to improve too.
I just wanna say Coach Donny's reaction videos are a great way to re-watch the entire haikyuu series. I actually get out two phones to watch the haikyuu episode on netflix, while simultaneously watching coach's reaction on another phone lol. My family thinks I'm crazy, but it's worth it. It *elevates* the experience that much more!😉 So thanks coach for making my re-watching spree so much more interesting and educational!
In Japan, as long as you have permission from the coach and after everyone leaves, you lock up the gym, you typically won't run into any issues. Obviously, you have to leave if the school is closing up for the day, but you can really go right up until that time. When I went to school in Japan, I remember practicing with a few of my teammates after practice until the security came and told us they were going to close up in 20 minutes and to wrap it up. It does depend on the school, but for the most part, you can practice without a coach as long as you have the coach's permission, the key to lock up, and leave in a timely manner.
"Dr. Wiley" isn't keeping Hinata down, he's just a traditionalist. In Japanese there's a saying "technique must be stolen"; a teacher has a responsibility to *direct* learning, but doesn't provide instruction until a student proves he's self-motivated. For example, aspiring chiefs only get to peel the vegetables, only students who see the pro chiefs peel vegetables in a single thin sheet and figure out how to do it get instruction. Wiley makes Hinata a ball boy because he sees a short player that can't run defense has no future in the sport (which may be unrealistic, but for narrative purposes works).
"Even tough he's a bit clumsy right now, as he builds more experience his thinking will start to merge with his instincts, and transform into intuition." This line from the assistant coach is so powerful, one of my absolute favorites from this half of the season. It shows exactly what is happening with Hinata as he learns to read more information from the court and merge with his own natural talents.
Hey Coach, I can't speak to the experience in high schools but I used to work for almost 3 years, in Junior High Schools (Grades 7-9) and the PE teacher would either stay late or work on their papers in the staff room while the students did their drills/ practices. In my experiences, there was at least ONE final teacher staying behind to make sure the gymnasium key was returned to the staff room. After which, that teacher would lock the staffroom and any remaining school rooms (ex. library where students would work on their hw) and then leave. The students are all encouraged to leave when the last teacher leaves. This usually happened roughly around 6:30pm tops. The responsibility to get the keys, the sports equipment, set-up, break-down and return everything is on the students. Usually one representative comes and get the key from the staffroom.
That was funny! That hoshiumi clip appearing when coach mistakes him for bokuto. Hahahaha! I can almost hear him say "huh??!" 😂 Good job editor-san! 👍🏼
Coach Donny. No matter how good or bad the art or animation is. I love hearing u talk and analyze them. Definitely keep it up, because it's interesting to hear it from the perspective of someone who has more knowledge about this subject than most other reactors.
To my understanding, illustration can get more effort put into it because it's much more reusable, while animation, especially for short one-off scenes with little importance, eat up a lot more time. Reusing illustration and animation intelligently is the sign of a great anime director and production staff. Some shows like DragonBall famously reuse a TON of animation (especially like GT), and some shows never reuse any animation but the budget skyrockets. Finding a healthy blend where the average viewer won't notice at all is a healthy, efficient middle that allows the animation team to focus on other, more important episodes/scenes
Definitely. You have to be smart about your budget. Skimping on scenes like these at the beginning, gave us the beautiful (except for that damn episode lol) Inarizaki match. I will take good animation for the Nationals, than the Shiratorizawa practice
Your take on the opening is extremely apt coach, for the song title is called “Phoenix” and rightly so! Especially within this episode we get the sense of Hinata being “reborn” by almost forgetting what he thinks he knows and trying to become stronger from the ashes
I love how Guess Monster and Top-Ace in HS league be like "man this short kid (who didn't even get invited to camp) is a terrifying monster and will probably eat my brains 😰😬
sometimes i'm wondering if coach will also react to japanese high school volleyball in the spring tournament (haruko) especially the final of higashiyama vs sundai gakuen, bc its sooo intense and good also their plays are sick!!! i'm manifesting this T___T
No one was thinking lowly of hinata, it’s a fact that hinata lacks the fundamentals or basics at this point that’s why when the assistant coach said that “he was empty, with no unnecessary filter” he meant he was open for new learning or knowledge that’s why he was able to improve so much in such a short time
That point about seeking opportunities to watch and observe hits very close to home for me because my watching so many volleyball videos and tutorials, especially your practices and the open gym videos and your tournament videos has really significantly increased my volleyball IQ to the point that it really helps out when I play. I trained at many different clubs and training camps and everywhere I made it a point to watch what everyone is doing and how they make certain plays and slowly but surely applying what I learned at practice and during games. So I also really empathized with Hinata when I read this portion of the manga especially since this is quite literally THE defining moment for Hinata and his volleyball journey
Was pretty bummed to start work after a Thanksgiving weekend, but seeing this upload definitely is making my monday morning infinitely better! Thanks Coach!
Wow. Not japanese but I've had free access to school gyms and courts my whole school life :O As long as the campus is still open (i.e. the guards haven't locked the campus down yet or the janitor hasn't arrived yet, you can just.... use the court. Bring your own ball though because the rest of the equipment is stored away by the teachers 😅
I might just assuming things, but the fact "Dr Wily" always scolds Hinata whenever he can may actually indicate he expects a lot from Hinata. Same thing happens with Tsutomu (The future ace member from Shiratorizawa). P.S: TBH, I'm only here to wait that scene when Hinata got hit by the ball.. And YES IT'S WORTH IT ROFL 🤣🤣🤣
Thank you Coach Donny for this awesome series. I've been watching since the 3rd or 4th episode of the first season and everything is great. I really enjoy watching your reactions to seeing this for the first time, and then going into depth about volleyball or animation details that I didn't catch in the 3ish times I've watched this anime. On top of all that, you've helped create a really genuine comment section that is rare to find on any channel. Honestly, reading the comments is one of the better parts of watching these videos. I'm not currently a patron, as college doesn't allow for much outside of school purchases, but I look forward to the day I can help support what you do, both Haikyuu and in person volleyball content.
Ushijima says that Hinata came there to create a opportunity he wasn't given and that something similar would probably happen again. I think that what he is implying is that for a short player that is lacking in many areas, Hinata will probably have to fight for and/or create his own opportunities many times. I don't think Ushijima is encouraging people to be cold to Hinata's situation but he is just telling it how it is. This is something Hinata has to learn to deal with because he's likely to deal with it a lot in the future.
Now we finally get to see why Washijou sensei made Hinata a ball boy. Also really cool to see the rest of the crew practicing. Tanaka finally learning how to jump serve.
The backgrounds look really good because the courts in Haikyuu are 3D rendered that is why they are able to do spinning camera shots and it always looks consistent. They don't have to redraw that scenary inside the courts that much.
Istg, whenever I watch Hinata during this season and how much he has grown and learned from the opportunity he made for himself makes me feel like a proud mom every tiiiime!
Mr./ Mrs/ Ms. Editor: Thank you so much!! You make this video more hillarious!!! And I think this is the second time Coach Donny has laughed like this reacting to Haikyuu. The first one was when they hit the wig out of the Viceprincipal
the reason why i freaking love this season (especially the first part) is because it show how someone put in a disadvantage could still work hard and learn sooo muchh
Coach Donny: most people dont even have the mobility to get this low Me, grinning because that ONE game with that ONE character who does that ONE thing like omg I CANT WAIT
haha I love the work your editor puts in! I don't know if they're familiar with Haikyuu but the fact that they took the time to add a reaction (from the correct character no less!) at 33:06 is really great!
Finally Coach Donny reached this part. Coach is the first reactor that has made me re-watched and re-read training arc in Haikyuu. So, since after training arc in season 2, I always wait impatiently for this arc. This arc is the beginning where Hinata hone his skill and intuitions. This arc helps people like me, who is an amateur, to fully understand the full perspective of volleyball. With Coach Donny reaction, it will make it perfect and people will understand more Keep up the great work Coach! Can't wait to see your reaction for the upcoming episodes this season
Honestly, IMO I think being a ball boy was one of the best thing that happened to Hinata’s game. I think if he played in the practice he wouldn’t have gotten as much from the entire experience. This event really took his playing to the next level.
Bump
Brah...?!‽ (...really?!‽ Are you serious?!‽)
That's exactly it!!
@@ishitapillai6723 i want coach to read this!!!

I wouldn't say it was scary but more so that it was different for them. Considering how insane everyone is there it was more like shock
I thought the anime made it clear enough
People who do not belong to a club are called homecoming clubs.
Wait so does that mean coach Ukai doesn't even get paid for all of this. Damn that sucks.
@@hadeelziad1056 i never even realized this detail and it's the coolest thing ever!!!!

Ooooo--- nice
Upp coach needs to see this!
Uppp

That by not taking it easy on him they didn't want to baby him because it'll be even harder in the future.
up!
Oh I didn't get the full essence up until now... Ty
Manga spoilers
And he wasn't wrong to do so, Hinata in Brazil was crazy tough for him.
Tsukki may be the tallest but he's actually a little bro to everyone 😂
And isn't Hinata the oldest among the first years? it fits XD plus he's an ACTUAL older brother so that checks out as well

This camp is for players 16 years old and younger, bokuto is in his 3rd year, so he's at least 17
How can someone confuse Hoshiumi with Bokuto? They look completely different.
The development of hinata's skill during this camp was beyond expectations. Just imagine how much he would have developed his skills and knowledge if he received even the tiniest bit of inputs and information from the Coach of training camp.
Hinata would have been the best player if he had access to coach donny's coaching videos
@Demon spitting facts
@@vailingbow1068 his job isn't to coach a player he didn't invite to à training camp in which he's working with other players.
I hope Coach sees this :-)
You're absolutely right. Anyway, who wouldn't be uncomfortable being stared at for hours and hours? Hinata can be pretty intense

Hi Harsh Reviews 👋🏻 I'm surprised but not surprised you watch Coach videos since both of of you have good insights about Haikyuu! 😁👍🏻
That is so cool you taught in miyagi. Am I too big of a haikyuu fan for thinking that? 🤣🤣

I wanna point out many episodes ago maybe in S2
Coach gave the advice that "when playing you should look at the players not the ball" or something along those lines
And guess what lesson Hinata learned in this episode, just goes to show how much the creator must've loved volleyball to have small details like this in his story
I remember that too! It's such a contrast to pre-Karasuno Hinata who is so obsessed on chasing the ball and just hit it across the net.
Yes and Furudate sensei played middle blocker in volleyball right?
I love how the editor it is also a fan of haikyu and reacted the same way we did it when coach called hosiumi bokuto
cannot disrespect my boi 😤😂
I'm searching for a comment where somebody points out that the camp is only for players who are 16 and under, which explains Bokuto's absence
4:41 It's not that Tendo is not respecting Hinata, but that he feels somewhat intimidated by how Hinata still looks forwards with determination and hunger (I think)
4:48 It was Ushijima
to sum that brief moment up from how I think it is meant: they are creeped out by how Hinata still has that fire in his eyes despite basically being side-lined and having one hurdle after another thrown in his way
His growth and potential is scary/creepy
22:30 I think Tsukishima actually is skipping on extra portions the 2nd and 3rd years at Karasuno keep giving him
They can sometimes act like mother hens and Tsukishima aint the type of guy who lets others tell him what to do and he doesnt wanna do it
25:27 Tokonami is actually the school where Daichi's friend is currently playing
Karasuno and Tokonami played during the Inter-High in season 1 if I remember correctly
It was the episode where we also got a few flashes from the Karasuno girl's team match
"We'll never win unless we believe we can." was Daichi's quote, which motivated both his best friend and Michimiya (Karasuno girl's team captain and also girl, who has a crush on Daichi)
I actually didn't realize until watching your reaction that it's the same team :D
I was the same with your last point. I was like damn it’s Tokonami!
Uppp
I love that
That's cool!
Upp
16:16 I love how Tendo is worried about Hinata and was willing to let him sleep there because he knows what is like to be an outcast and for people to put him aside. That shows just how a good and sympathetic person he is.
I really hope season 5 comes before this ends so we can continue watching this content.

Thank you for your reactions 💕
oh, I didn't remember it! thanks for reminding!

**Hinata literally suffers from pain**
Coach: "Oh man, I love the humor in Haikyuu" **replays the scene @**37:26****
Coach is savage.
Uppp
And something like this will probably happen again."
This becomes more obvious as the show continues (and is made totally clear in the manga) but essentially, it's referring to Hinata's fate as a particularly short professional player.
To quote a certain character from the manga who's already been referenced several times in the anime, "Sports can be completely unfair, but they're also ruthlessly fair."
Hinata can't sit back and be as good as everyone else, or even as good as the best.
I know this is an old comment but you’re so right. Thank you for that amazing interpretation and insight
When Hinata is talking about Tsukki "leaving food" whenever their senpais weren't watching, I believe he means that Tsukki just doesn't eat all of his food. Not that he leaves food for Hinata, haha.
Its honestly so satisfying to watch Hinata learn all these new techniques and moves
25:22 Just wanted to point out that Tokonami is the same high school that Daichi’s friend Ikejiri went to and played volleyball for back in Season 1! Little fun fact.
I knew it was a familiar name! I wonder if ikejiri like, retired or something or if he was there🤔
Last Sunday I was playing volleyball with friends and at one point I managed to read to the attacker that he was going to make a feint and I could receive the ball without any problem; It felt pretty good to read the play and continue it.
That sounds really cool! I hope you can continue improving as a player more!
@@shampaghosh1241 :D
thats awesome! im looking to get into volleyball and i hope i get to experience that someday :D
The fact that he is teaching Hinata this while helping him improve his fundamentals by being a ball boy is a HUGE help for Hinata but unfortunately, most of the fanbase doesnt see this and hate on washijou :(
it was not Shirabu, but Goshiki
@@fidaruzki565 oh yeah mb, I honestly don't know why I put in shirabu while I was thinking goshiki xD
Haha understood.
I just wish I wasn't 5'0 (1,55m for the rest of the world who doesn't speak imperial measurements)
that's good
keep improving, you got this :D
Can we all agree coach Ukai is the GOAT he's taking time away from his other job... the one that actually pays him just to help out one of his kids
Your editor did a great job on quoting a lot of wise words that you're saying Coach. I had screenshot the other amazing quote that you said last time that I really can relate too (about confidence). Keep it up, Editor-san.
Thanks! 🙌🏼 happy to help 😊
@@JamesLightner ohh you're the editor?! Thanks a lot for your hard work and also the funny little memes you put here and there! Makes the reactions more engaging for us fans XD
Can you please remind what the Quote about confidence was all about? And what episode reaction was that too
When Tendou in the beginning says "how creepy".
If the sun shines brighter, (hinata improving)
more light reflects on the moon. (tsuki's improving)
I think Tsuki's inferiority complex was kicking in again when he saw Hinata putting in a lot of effort.
That's brilliant, I can't believe I've never thought of this before.
What do I even have two monitors for
In Japan, as long as you have permission from the coach and after everyone leaves, you lock up the gym, you typically won't run into any issues.
Your new editor is absolutely killing it! So many tiny details that absolutely sent me this video.
Hinata getting the bigger picture of the court and not only chasing the ball is always one of my favourite part 😭😭
The new effect whenever Coach imitates Japanese is my absolute fave. Thank you Editor-san
"Even tough he's a bit clumsy right now, as he builds more experience his thinking will start to merge with his instincts, and transform into intuition."
This line from the assistant coach is so powerful, one of my absolute favorites from this half of the season. It shows exactly what is happening with Hinata as he learns to read more information from the court and merge with his
own natural talents.
I love how the editor put hoshiumi face "uuhhh" when coach confuse him with bokuto klasjdklasjdlkjalskd
I also have to point out that the animation studio (Production IG) uses a lot of CG for backgrounds which explains the difference in quality
Can't wait to see Coach's reaction to Atsumu's serving routine
I've waited so long for coach Donny to see Hinata's growth and development, can't wait for him to see the results!
Editor-san slipping in Hoshiumi's HAAHHHHHH straight up killed me 😂
No one was thinking lowly of hinata, it’s a fact that hinata lacks the fundamentals or basics at this point that’s why when the assistant coach said that “he was empty, with no unnecessary filter” he meant he was open for new learning or knowledge that’s why he was able to improve so much in such a short time
That point about seeking opportunities to watch and observe hits very close to home for me because my watching so many volleyball videos and tutorials, especially your practices and the open gym videos and your tournament videos has really significantly increased my volleyball IQ to the point that it really helps out when I play.
I love how the editor is having fun with this. great video, great reaction, great editing!
The part where Hinata was hit by the ball never fail to crack me up. The look on the faces of all the guys in that court as well loool 😂😂
I might just assuming things, but the fact "Dr Wily" always scolds Hinata whenever he can may actually indicate he expects a lot from Hinata. Same thing happens with Tsutomu (The future ace member from Shiratorizawa).
P.S:
TBH, I'm only here to wait that scene when Hinata got hit by the ball..
The clips of Hoshiumi’s “HUUUUH?!!” ’s when coach thought he was Bokuto are so funny
33:07 that Hoshiumi reaction was just perfect, good choice editor!!!!
“Is he give him food or is he gonna tell him he’s stupid” truly a comment that encapsulates Tsukki in a nutshell 🤣
the reason why i freaking love this season (especially the first part) is because it show how someone put in a disadvantage could still work hard and learn sooo muchh
Coach Donny: most people dont even have the mobility to get this low
Me, grinning because that ONE game with that ONE character who does that ONE thing like omg I CANT WAIT
I love how coach was talking about serve routine and this is the season where we get to see one of the coolest serve routines ever!!
haha I love the work your editor puts in! I don't know if they're familiar with Haikyuu but the fact that they took the time to add a reaction (from the correct character no less!) at 33:06 is really great!
I was about to go to sleep again but coach said nah, get up, we're watching Haikyuu!
With Coach Donny reaction, it will make it perfect and people will understand more
Keep up the great work Coach! Can't wait to see your reaction for the upcoming episodes this season
Honestly, IMO I think being a ball boy was one of the best thing that happened to Hinata’s game. I think if he played in the practice he wouldn’t have gotten as much from the entire experience. This event really took his playing to the next level.
