I love how they ended the match. The other Karasuno games' main focus was how they were going to win against the opponent, and they really focused on the drama of getting that final point. You often see the characters talk about the score and how close they are to winning. But against Nekoma, they didn't even mention or highlight that Karasuno was at match point because for this match, it wasn't about who was going to win. It was just a group of friends having the time of their lives playing volleyball with each other. Hinata didn't even notice the score until it ended because he was just enjoying the moment. Masterpiece.
21:45 Just love that Hinata is not celebrating that he actually scored a point, but the fact that he finally got Kenma to say that it is fun 🥲 (and he scored of course, lol)
It's definitely mostly because Kenma said he had fun. That was literally written out for us in the flashbacks when he says "it's whatever" when Hinata asks if he has fun playing.
@@oriondourden agreed. There's barely any reaction from Hinata when Karasuno actually wins the game. The title of that chapter (when Kenma admits to having fun) and of the track that plays during that rally is "I Win", too. Although I imagine it must've felt extra good to catch Kenma, of all people, off guard with a long tip (especially since it's a trick Hinata picked up just a couple games earlier).
That POV shot was something the director had in mind for years now, since at least S2, and it was quite challenging on all staff involved, but they really managed it beautifully. There's a whole booklet dedicated entirely to it with interviews with a few animators that worked on that cut (1069). It was hard to find the balance between showing it realistically and avoiding motion sickness, and it ended up being longer than they'd planned. Arguably the most wholesome match in Haikyuu, and boy do we need it before what comes next :") I'm personally on copium hoping for something extra to the one remaining movie, which we might hear about in March (or December but imo that's less likely). Whatever happens, will be looking forward to your commentary as always! Thank you for digging in so deeply! Actually, for the movie in particular I'd love for you to read the manga and maybe compile parts of your reactions/thoughts on it, because a Lot of stuff got cut out due to time constraints, much more than usual. But if putting it in a video is too troublesome, I'd still recommend checking it out on your own time, it's really worth it!
It made me tear up reading the manga panel where grandpa Ukai hold his hand out for grandpa nekoma. Him being hospitalized due to age and their long rivalry have finally come to fruition, battling in the national stage. Seeing it animated made me cry and cry again. It's just so beautiful. Peak story telling.
Forgot where I saw it, but someone said it is so poetic how the game ends with sweat making the ball slip from Kenma’s hands, sweat picked up from both teams connecting so many times in their long rallies that the ball became slippery, drawing a parallel to the deep and intense connection between Karasuno and Nekoma. I love their team bond so much. With no other teams have we seen Karasuno spend this much time in post-match greetings, and never with this amount of affection and friendliness. They’re so special to each other ❤
I'm not ashamed to say that when I first read that scene where Grandpa Ukai reached his hand out to Coach Nekoma I broke down crying because it was almost like he was saying goodbye.
haikyuu anime was actually sponspored by both molten and mikasa which is why they animated both balls and tried to give both brands respectfull screentime
Hinata isn't sreaming because of the point, he's not screaming because of the winning feel... Hinata has achieved a goal, but it's nothing to do with winning... he made Kenma enjoy volleyball, that's it, that's his win... He promised in season two that he'd make Kenma have fun playing volleyball and here it is, full circle. This is why this moment is so emotional for all of us. Kuroo laughs because he understood, he, too has been trying to make Kenma enjoy the game, he doesn't care who achieved that goal as long as his best friend finally got it. It's the most wholesome scene in all of Haikyuu along with Tsukki's moment in third season (IMO)
Another great animation detail at 38:57 is that the animation for Hoshiumi is the exact same as the Little Giant in the very beginning in episode 1 of Haikyuu AND another great detail is that Hoshiumi’s teammates are all accurate instead of having generic faces even though we haven’t been introduced to his teammates yet
23:10 its not just winning here. its also Kenma tying an emotion to volleyball. not just "huh it felt normal, whatever". thats the breakthrough Hinata was chasing after.
The last pov and flashback has to be the embodiment of playing every match like practice, and every practice like a real match. Especially between 2 teams that have trained and competed together so long. Everyone is entirely absorbed into the game, Hinata a bit more than others 😂
When Kenma said "You idiot! The ball hasn't fallen yet!" is one of my top favorite moments of Haikyuu On the manga that moment is a little different tho, the manga version still give me goosebumps But anyway I just love that scene sm ^^
I like that at the last few scenes, the scores are not emphasize unlike before so you also got this feeling of suprise that it ended already. Of course there are others that are super observant to see the scoreboard.
"Donmin" is translated as "Don't worry about it" because "Don't mind" doesn't sound natural (I don't believe I've ever in my almost 60 years heard a native English speaker say that), and this idiom is not only common but communicates the same meaning in a naturally sounding way. I am a much bigger fan of translations that accurately convey the feeling than are direct word-for-word. Side topic, but this is something that I really liked about the translators of "Midnight Diner" (深夜食堂) on Netflix. The setting is Shijuku, so there's lots of colloquialisms and Oyaji gag. When the direct translation would make no sense to the English audience and break the flow of the narrative with confusion they di a very good job of using similar phrases or "Dad jokes" that communicate the same information with a similar feel.
Hi Coach I watched you TikTok Live the other day and commented this: Maybe you can make a comparison from the manga versus the movie. I’ll give it to the animators and sound designers. They did a really great job with the small details and bringing it all together was AMAZING. I read the manga before the movie came out and when I heard they were ending with two movies it was absolutely devastating. This match deserved its own season alone. I can kinda understand stand why they wanted to make it into a movie because it did really well in Japan. But we were robbed of a very good arc, I would’ve thought that because of the amount of build-up we had from the past 4 seasons and all the hype about THE MATCH. The match of matches. I thought we were going to get everything Furudate made for this build-up. We were robbed of the origins of this rivalry, amazing rallies, more about the players from both teams, and MUCH MORE!!! I can write a whole essay about it. When I left the movie theater, I was a bit disappointed in the fact that they left out so much. But after watching the movie 5 times including this time with you guys. I’ve really come to enjoy it and appreciate the fact that the smooth transitions and movements in the animation were amazing (to put it in perspective. All these frames are being drawn, so they’re drawing in between 24-60 frames per second). The sound effects were als very well done, like the hard BOOM sounds from the strong players that were receiving, spiking, and serving. The sound people did a great job, not sure you noticed but they intentionally made Asahi, Kuroo, Tora, Kageyama and all the strong players sound very loud but when Hinata was hitting the ball it wasn't as loud. It’s small details like that, that make me really appreciate this movie. There are so many more little details from this movie that I enjoyed but I’ll cut it short here. I 100% recommend reading the manga and enjoying the illustrations and side stories that were left out. The movie did the anime justice but not so much the manga.
Hinata's scream is not about winning or getting the point. He is overjoyed because he made Kenma admit that it is fun. The thing i love about this scene is it is not only about winning and losing but enjoying the game to the fullest. Kenma who had always been giving too little because he had not had the satisfaction from the game admits that he is having fun even when he is barely breathing. This means more that the championship to Hinata who enjoys the game with all his heart.
The feeling of wanting to make your coach's dream come true before he retires is something I understand so much and why Kuro is one of my fav characters of all time.
I really enjoyed your reaction! Many have already explained that the Japanese phrase "Don't mind" (pronounced "DON MY") started being used around 1930, as it appeared in a Japanese new word dictionary published that year. It definitely originates from the English phrase "don't mind." However, it has since become a uniquely Japanese phrase meaning "shake it off/don't worry" and you can hear it so often in many anime. We Japanese use "DON MY" quite often, but it’s a casual phrase, so it’s never used in business settings and serious situation.
I still remember that 3d pan shot we saw in season 3, how it was actually quite jittery despite how epic it is. And when I look at how smooth it is here, I'm glad the animators have the time and budget to achieve their vision properly.
They're saying "don't mind" in english...the reason the captions say don't worry is that don't mind isn't a very natural English phrase. A more common phrase would be "don't worry" so it's more of a localization change
31:50 Well, according to Nekoma's usual strategy, they tend to sub Kenma out either during the 2nd game or for the 3rd game b/c of Kenma's poor endurence. So normally this guy is their 2nd setter that does get to play towards the end. But, because this was such a personal battle for Kenma, and he was actually having fun for once despite the exercise (or at least was more willing to show it), they kept Kenma in for the whole game, so the 2nd setter didn't get to come out to play this match other than that pinch serving play. But still, yeah, with that attitude of his, I agree it'd be nice to see him go from 2nd setter to a starter. I just don't know if using two setters would work with Nekoma's current strategy, so it is a little up in the air for me on how they would piece that together to make it work. (Hehe, "up in the air," ... like his serve... lol) Saying this as someone w/ no volleyball strategy knowledge, I just know double setters can work when one or both setters can also be good hitters too and that's about it on that aspect.
CANT WAIT TO SEE THE GREATEST DECOY, I HOPE THEY DO WELL IN COMPRESSIN THE REST OF THE MANGA CUZ THERES ONLY 1 MOVIE LEFT RIGHT? AHHHH THIS MOVIE FELT SO COMPRESSED WHEN I WATCHED IT ON CINEMA BUT THE ANIMATION AND DIRECTION IS JUST PEAK HAIKYUU

yeah donmai is just dont mind idk what goes into the translator's mind, maybe he just wanna make it longer lmao. anyways there are different words as well like Sankyou which is Thank You, not really japanese its just how they pronounce thank you, i think its just in anime and they dont really say that in person.
Not a player, just wanted to ask if its realistic to have the ball slip due to sweat when trying to set. I wasn't sure if it was a narrative liberty they were taking for the game or if its legit!
i was a bit disappointed in the movie because they cut out so much content from the manga, but the final rally with Kenma's POV is honestly peak cinema
I am disappointed we dont know Nekoma vs Karasuno Happen in Hinata 3rd year. I want Hinata and Kenma to face again for one more time. Dont want this to be their 1st and last competitive Volleball match.
@@trelos7431 I like how Furudate did it (I don't want to spoil for anime onlys) because I feel it would have been waaay too repetitive and predictable had it been done differently. @@Tshh11 Agreed, I quite like the way Furudate went with the direction of the manga. At the end of the day, I think Haikyu is more about each athlete's passion and love for volleyball, and not so much about necessarily beating each other and being the best. I really loved the climax of Karasuno vs Nekoma because it shows how Kenma went from someone that played cos he was bored, to someone that actually enjoys the sport. The Brazil arc really showed Hinata's growth as an athlete, and I think it delivers some very important messages for real life athletes, like learning to train responsibly and look after your body!

"Donmin" is translated as "Don't worry about it" because "Don't mind" doesn't sound natural (I don't believe I've ever in my almost 60 years heard a native English speaker say that), and this idiom is not only common but communicates the same meaning in a naturally sounding way.
