A brilliant strategy, provided that you have five times as many men as your opponent, an infinite supply of huge metal shields, all of your soldiers are perfectly coordinated, and the enemy commander is a complete idiot.

I came here solely just for a rant. Yes, i dont understand why the enemy armies politely and willingly entered the formation through the gap instead of just charging through the wall. @@AndromedaPrima I was about to say the same which dumbass would willingly enter a formation where at any moment you can be surrounded on all sides... idk how strong your metal shield is throw 100 horses at it and it'll break or the man behind will
The realistic strategy would be the one used at waterloo. Wellington's army used box formation with bayonets sticking out. Marshal Ney's cavalery could only circle the formation while being shot at.
"They've left openings in their ranks, and their formations seem very inviting and open for us. They also don't seem to be attacking us while we ride past, this couldn't possibly go wrong, everyone advance into the circular maze and disperse, don't attack or that may upset them. Wander aimlessly until everyone is in, then wait. The game is afoot."
This battle is so different in the novel. The formation was supposed to be in a forest, as I recall and visibility was very low. Also, it was on a much larger scale so the enemy could not actually spot the formation. Whenever the charging cavalry wanted to exit the forest there would be pikes and shields guarding the exit. This was because the troops were all hidden within the trees and the lookouts would signal them with drums and flags.

1. No, horses not crashing into a shield formation isn't a strange thing. Horses won't run into obstacles if they have a free way to go, like happens in this sequence. This tactic dates back to ancient egypt (actually first battle recorded in human history, Ramses II vs the hitites). 2. Yes, this is most likely a lame depiction of what happened in reality. If not regarding the tactic itself, at least one could think that the horsemen would... You know... Attack them meanwhile waiting to see what happens. 3. They don't attack because they are carrying swords. Straight swords. On fucking horseback. Good lord. Veredict: The basic tactic isn't magic at all. But empires of all periods of history (starting with the very same Ramses II that used this tactic for the first time) have greatly exaggerated their victories, to the point this looks way, way, way too effective on the chinesse part, and too moronic on the other guys (mongols? Great! You explained it very well. Btw, i have read from the novel that Zhuge Liang had invented a kind of self movable oxen-horse like cart to transport supplies, but I do not know whether this is true or not.
Actually the turtle formation was used in early chinese battles.... the turtle formation was used in both siege and defense battles and was effective i would say 80% of the time. Please.... do some research before commenting.

I can guarantee that Chinese army don't fight like this during the three kingdoms era or any era for that matter. They will send archers and artillery units first to that formation to soften them up. Followed by infantry charge. After the enemy is engaged, the cavalry will surround the outermost circle and do not going in. They will make sure nobody escape alive when the formation broke.
Yeah, that's true. I was also surprised that we can see a lot of Shu & Wu generals, but very few Wei generals... Maybe they will appear in the next movie... ? Still, it's strange because there were a lot of Wei generals in the Red Cliff's battle : Cao Pi, Dian Wei.... (btw Dian Wei is the most important Wei general, after Cao Cao, even more than Cao's son Cao Pi at that time)
Its waaayy to late. But the son that Cao Cao mentioned after loosing him and Dian Wei was Cao Ang. The first heir apparent.. Cao Cao mentioned that he grieved the lost of his most trusted general and bodyguard more than the lost of his first son.. That's shows how much respect he have on his subordinates.. As he also said, "I never employed the questionable, and never questions the employed."
This part of the movie is deliberately unrealistic (combining the superhuman wuxia genre with historical fiction) but I enjoy how it is used to demonstrate many principles of Chinese war philosophy: use of terrain as an advantage, using a smaller but better trained army vs. a larger one, luring an enemy into a trap by creating a false weakness in your defenses, disrupting an enemy's communication and re-supply lines, etc.
:/ the matrix? John wick? All other Hollywood movies? Comparing those with this? China had to atleast work with what they got and making it realistic? They never admit to making these war movies realistic as they only want the action, formations, and meaning and events that possibly happened a long time ago.
Atleast they tried. Decent enough for a war movie, doesn't matter on realism, atleast I can enjoy movies that shows some formations and such action stuff.
The movie here is based after the first Chinese empire was declared like more than 390 years bro, and the defending ambushers still use formations favored by Sun Tzu of Wu
That was't stupid. Muskets were inaccurate and that way of fighting was very effective. Throw artillery, sharpshooters and cavalry into the mix and it is a very complex battle. It certainly required more tactics than this mess.
Pretty sure muskets back then also usually weren't powerful enough to shoot through someone and to stop the bullets bouncing off they'd have to get in close. Flintlock pistols were awful in this regard because they'd just put the barrel against someone's chest and fire to make sure it didn't just bruise.
Two ranks of well-trained infantry are enough to break a cavalry charge. At the Battle of Jalandhar, a force of 2000 Rajput infantry were able to hold off 30,000 Mongols under Duwa Khan for two days until reinforcements could arrive from Delhi. The only safe way to attack infantry formations are either archers & artillery or other infantry- unless you are Rohirrim & have Gandalf on your side :P
So CaoCao had the political advantage and can gather army in the imperial name(fast and good cause).SunQuan has the solid Base his father and brother had left him so he can do what he want without the worrying of backstabbing(this CaoCao cant do).LiuBei has the best man resource for his popularity.
This formation can easily be broken as it is just a few lines deep, not that charging head on is the best tactic. I would like to see them attacking in this clever formation. That would be so fun.
You're completely right. Now that I rethink it, one unarmored fat guy taking on thousands of well drilled troops at once seems completely legit. These Chinese television shows really look like a credible, historical accurate source. Screw books and university degrees. From now on, this is where I'm getting my data from. You're right, and I thank you for your enlightenment.
I feel like that's the difference between Hollywood action movies and Chinese action movies. Movies like this put any semblance of plausibility on the back burner and force you to suspend your disbelief for the sake of the action. It's not for everyone and it doesn't always work but when it does work the action delivers on a level that no western movie has been able to match.
so before the battle of the red cliff,CaoCao has the emperor and the government to back him up,so he is politically the offical and justice side.SunQuan just gained his throne and has little control over the court, but the effort his family has made makes Wu a solid base for him to develop. LiuBei's royal blood makes him extremely popular with the majority, he can gather the talented people better than others
yes, haven't watch the movie, and I'm sorry, I was reading comments and didn't see the spearmen; and what I said was the Greek turtle formation was more effective; and that shield formation was called trigrams formation; furthermore, when I said "use the infantry" meant using infantry to charged at the shields directly, 'cuz if not, they'd probably get stuck like the calvary. But what intrigued me was when the calvary was stuck, why didn't they call for backup?
they scatter thus further solidifies that they were confused from the initial archer bombardment and dust cover. Forgot to note that behind the main formation being used is that the main force is behind it (Indicated that the command center wouldn't be in the middle of that formation). SO whomever goes around gets picked off. Thus reason why formation works is the initial confusion and chaos caused, once inside everyone is scattered thus command structure is lost causing more confusion.
it's in your opinion. Those general were certainty a master of martial arts and swordplay, it is not because of magic. Maybe it's not to fight out thousand or million, but it is realistic if the opponent only tens to hundreds
I'm not a historian, nor am I trying to sound like one. Chinese Antiquity crossbows were so cumbersome, they were usually deployed in 2 man teams with a shield to act as the loader, to position the crossbow, and the shooter. Also mainly used to repel and advance troop formations.
If you had smaller shields, and remember not everyone had one. It was more common to have a spear opposed to a sword and shield because a spear was cheaper. These tower shields are cheap to make though because of the fact that there is little shaping that needs to be done, it's just a block of metal. All that aside you still have no idea what's waiting for you, and that is granted you can knock the guy back. They tended to force these shields into the ground to make them harder to knock down.
Well what were you expecting from a John Woo picture? That guy directed "Face/off", "Broken Arrow" and "Mission Impossible 2", being over the top and free of any grounding in reality is kind of his thing. But if you are hoping to see a more realistic depiction on the three kingdoms era in china that is more true to the source material of the novel "The Romance of Three Kingdoms" then may I suggest the original 1994 "Romance of Three Kingdoms" TV series. It is so true the source material of the novel that there and entire scenes taken from the book with dialog taken word for word. Just stay away from the 2010 remake of that TV series, that remake is even more cheesier that this video and far less entertaining.
You forget the times. Tactically it wasn't something you left in the open, that's why they created a dust cloud to conceal themselves as the enemy rushed in, how smart the commander was is irrelevant if you're able to bait them effectively. The formation leaves you with little choices because you either run and get volleyed by arrows or risk continued assault. Shields were also a dime a dozen. And chain of command makes it so coordination perfect and easy, hence the drumming to signal officers.
Regardless of the time, if the enemy commander is not stupid, they don’t go charging in without attacking anything. This formation was not obscured either. The shields are not particularly difficult to knock down with one person behind each, and you would be able to push them down on horseback.

And they don't have bows?) part.
This formation looks more like the famous Chakravyuh used in Mahabharath which led to Abhimanyu's brutal death.
lol. go check out mahabarat!!!
They're also chinese.
There are careful ambushes, there are obvious traps, and then there's this.
0:31 "Hey look! the enemies are making a big circle, let's all go inside!! :) Seems legit!"
They couldn't see that circle, they didn't have bird eye view ;) besides, there was sand everywhere, they couldn't see a shit anyway.
@Sirtael Ellevalerie Ok, you dont do any scouting, becuase your plan is to go just ahead and hope for the best.
Great plan. Works every time.
Except, when it does not.
@@pavelivanov2999 they was in the open, hailed by arrows. Not a best situation to planning. In the midst of enemies they at least couldn't be shoot at.
@@sirtaelellevalerie1056 i dont get, how someone can say that this looks some what plausible.
It makes no sense.
Charging blindly is plain stupid, only an amateur or a mad man would do such a thing.
Secondly in real life such a formation would be broken easily.
When commenting on how bad this scene is one does not know, where to start.
It is just incredibly retarded.

Great! You explained it very well. These are just movies. The aim of every war movie(if the producer have money) is to make as much spectacular special effect or great battle scenes in order to attract more audiences.

0:26 Cornavirus entering your body be like.
watching westerners get titled over this is so....refreshing
Things like this really went down. We just don't know about it.
That ending scene was so funny 😂😂😂

This part of the movie is deliberately unrealistic (combining the superhuman wuxia genre with historical fiction) but I enjoy how it is used to demonstrate many principles of Chinese war philosophy: use of terrain as an advantage, using a smaller but better trained army vs. a larger one, luring an enemy into a trap by creating a false weakness in your defenses, disrupting an enemy's communication and re-supply lines, etc.
I like how it violates the laws of Physics.
then make videos studying all the movies of the world about how their physics, defy law of physics
Like every other movie?
I like how you think this is supposed to be accurate.
:/ the matrix? John wick? All other Hollywood movies?
Comparing those with this? China had to atleast work with what they got and making it realistic? They never admit to making these war movies realistic as they only want the action, formations, and meaning and events that possibly happened a long time ago.
@@koreancowboy42 how is John Wick the same kind of movie as Matrix?
Atleast they tried. Decent enough for a war movie, doesn't matter on realism, atleast I can enjoy movies that shows some formations and such action stuff.
total war: red cliff...!
D jake think there was a three kingdom mod for rome total war
Give this guy an award you just predicted the future bro
Yep, there is total war about the three kingdom...
Total war three kingdom got most of its elements from this movie. From unit design and background music, it has a lot of red cliff reference.
Yuhangism Guo especially cao cao
Wow! the ancient armies of the warring states of China used some really interesting tactics
Bullet-Tooth Tony the formation is called chakravyuh and it was used in ancient india. the epic "Mahabharata" mentions it. google up.

The movie here is based after the first Chinese empire was declared like more than 390 years bro, and the defending ambushers still use formations favored by Sun Tzu of Wu
@@shinsenshogun900 sorry by the brilliant zhuge liang who perfected it and sun tzu wasnt a part of the wu dynasty it was zhuge jin of wu
While It might be a bit ridiculous accuracy wise, you cant say Chinese films are boring.
Its almost just as stupid as American and British armies in the 1700's when theyd just march infront of each other and shoot at point blank range.
That was't stupid. Muskets were inaccurate and that way of fighting was very effective. Throw artillery, sharpshooters and cavalry into the mix and it is a very complex battle. It certainly required more tactics than this mess.
chap0syoutuification Well said except perhaps that last part.
Pretty sure muskets back then also usually weren't powerful enough to shoot through someone and to stop the bullets bouncing off they'd have to get in close. Flintlock pistols were awful in this regard because they'd just put the barrel against someone's chest and fire to make sure it didn't just bruise.
Still way better than this horriblelic chinese idea
Aquila_Sieg yep
If all of them in those time rally for there nation exactly China will easily to rule Asia in those time
Good movie. This is what chinese film makers should make more of, chinese historical war movies with accurate armor and weapons of the time period.
However the actions are terribly unrealistic, they should hire those who made the movie"warlord"
in reality only dumb general would engage that formation head on... especially on that clear plain...

関羽と趙雲がカッコよすぎる
it's in your opinion. Those general were certainty a master of martial arts and swordplay, it is not because of magic. Maybe it's not to fight out thousand or million, but it is realistic if the opponent only tens to hundreds
"It's A TRAP!"
I'm not a historian, nor am I trying to sound like one. Chinese Antiquity crossbows were so cumbersome, they were usually deployed in 2 man teams with a shield to act as the loader, to position the crossbow, and the shooter. Also mainly used to repel and advance troop formations.
A moment of silence for all horses who are hurt 😞
Honestly speaking yea rip. But they probs tried to save horses. They're pretty expensive.
6:49 Nobody mess with Zhang Fei
This film is a masterpiece, pure epicness! A film I watch time and time again!
6:50 Oh Christ, it's Chinese Brian Blessed here to ruin your day!
I love that in movies like this, Authority Equals Asskicking is in full effect.
I wish a director would try depicting it with a more realistic interpretation of the source book, no Dynasty Warrioring armies left and right.
Bro this strategy is genius!!!

"They have a cave troll..."
We have Master Sun Tzu a brilliant strategist during the Warring States periode in China. Then we have Sun Bin a brilliant strategist after 100yrs of the Warring States periode in China.then we Zhuge Liang during The Three Kingdom periode.
