For an elf its not defying the laws of anything because he’s lighter than a hobbit. That’s why he could walk on the surface of snow in Fellowship when the rest had to wade through it.

At 1:58 when Aragorn and Éowyn locked eyes, gets me every time. So much was conveyed without a single word. A few things with this that I love:
    1. All the stuff happening in the background; you can see riders that got knocked off their mounts fighting each other on foot, other fights going on (when Aragorn picks up a spear to save Gimli you see a man on a horse get tackled by a Warg and its rider and Warg, orc, and horse all go over the cliff), plus stuff in the aftermath (you can see wounded Men crawling, orcs finished off by riders, one wounded guy getting a drink from another Rohirrim)
    2. Legolas's facial dialogue when Theoden says to leave the dead. Without saying a word Orlando Bloom really conveys that Legolas feels betrayed by Theoden that they won't search for Aragorn and that he REALLY wants to search for him himself. And Theoden's pause shows he understands that but that HIS people come first.

I wouldn't go that far. It's hard as hell to capture the fantasy genre well in cinema, and PJ obviously did a good job. But it can be a little hokey at times, or fall flat. This scene in particular was unnecessary and inconsequential, for example. We know Aragorn lives to tell the tale, so why put the audience in suspense of his death? Even people who are unfamiliar with the books would have seen the trailer and wondered why Aragorn was to die before the scenes of him fighting in the rain (Helm's Deep). I'd go on but I'll surely get cooked by the fans if I do lol.

Nice little touch that it's always Legolas that doesn't handle death well, he'd have a child's understanding of it as he's never had to worry about it or deal with it being close to him until now. For him "death" is a temporary and physical thing only, he knows where his spirit will go and that his body will reform sooner or later (since he's a great and honorable hero it'd be sooner). But now that he cares about humans, hobbits and a dwarf, he has to deal with real death, permanent and unknowable and he has no practice with it.

    • @Mikrobizeps

Yeah. Legolas looks confused after Gandalfs death in Moria. Like he is struggeling to process it. The ending of a life must be so uncomprehensible for an immortal being. When he watches Boromir dying, there is this blunt fascination but also pity in his eyes.

I think about it now, & see how Theoden spoke to Eowyn. "Do this for me." when he sent her away. I wonder if Theoden was protecting Eowyn because he knew he'd die in this war & feared that Eomer would ride into battle & may die himself. Maybe he knew Eowyn was a strong leader & felt the need to protect her in order to make sure Rohan had someone capable enough to lead his people.

This is the only "maiden of Rohan that becomes a war hero" story we needed. It was cool and special. Now they're needlessly doing it AGAIN instead of giving us something unique. It makes what Eowyn did less significant.

@@nahor88Do you mean in Rings of Power?
My issue with them trying to do that with Galadriel is the fact that she's one of the oldest living beings on Middle Earth. She doesn't fit the fiery, stubborn woman warrior type at all. Tolkien described her as tall, with a deep voice. She was incredibly cunning, too. I don't really get why they made her into such a generic character. I think having her be the shrewd tactician in a revenge plot could have been much more interesting - never getting her hands dirty herself, but manipulating others to do it for her (though even revenge itself seems like something she is beyond).

Legolas scenes will never get old. These movies did so much right, and so much to inspire the man I've become today.
They really made Legolas out to be the ultimate warrior - the shot of him lone on the hill, lobbing up missiles is glorious, and then it's immediately topped with that incredible horse mounting on the run! Yeah, him and Gimli's characters were cut back significantly from the books - but I feel like the movies still managed to give them plenty to establish them as epic badasses!

After dispatching an opponent Théoden has the awareness to notice the Warg coming up behind him, turn & stab it in the mouth in such a way it'll be a killshot

The Aragorn fake-death thing seems a bit unnecessary, because this is about seeing Theoden in action for the first time.
