Those were very well equipped Taiping troops if their shooting is any indication. Taiping were usually lucky to have a real hodge-podge of sub-standard or obsolete or worn-out guns sold to them at inflated prices by unscrupulous European and American arms dealers. Bayonets were another rarity for Taiping troops, while even the Qing troops mainly had smoothbore matchlock weapons; only the Ever Victorious Army was consistently armed with muzzle-loading rifle and bayonet and trained in their use.
There were japanese dealers too! The murata type18 were mostly disposed by the military for Chinese warlords and Filipino revolutionaries after the rifle was ousted by the new bolt action Arisaka!
Firearms are a Chinese invention, but I doubt that it can be said Chinese "perfected" the weapons or the tactics. At least they took over occidental technology in the the 17th century, which proves that European gun and probably firearm technology had overtaken the Chinese one. It were the political structures and doctrines of the Qing period which prevented such a big an ingenious people to keep pace.
the technology of qing dynasty was even lower than the previous dynasty Ming, because qing was nomads from North, they were good at and proud of riding shot and didn't concern technology that much, totally developed the wrong way
The earliest artillery was invented by the Jin and Song states who fought against the Mongolian army, both in China. After all, gunpowder technology was the first to be used in China. The first pure firearms unit established in the Ming Empire (1407) was a hundred years earlier than the Spanish musketeers. But two hundred years later, the exploration of military technology lagged behind Europe, even though the economy was stronger than foreign countries. Until the Qing Dynasty, the weapon generation gap was completely formed. The 10 million square kilometers of land was almost impossible to resist foreign aggression, and 2 million square kilometers of land was directly lost.
I was asking myself the same question. I would argue its an innaccuracy. From what I understand both sides had limited fire power and were mainly fighting with traditional armaments (bows, swords, etc...). The Qing army had yet to undergo any heavy westernization (happens during the Self-strengthening movement post-Taiping)
Black powder guns and cannons were widely used even before Manchu conquered china by Ming( self made and import from Portugal)Even more westernized firearms were equipped after 1840.
Not really, the Christian idea is just a tool that Taiping leaderships used to unite the ppl, but actually most of the soldiers was not thinking that deeply, all they wanted is nothing special, just to survive

Does anyone else get the impression that, despite how extraordinarily well they might understand and use bladed weapons, no one is this movie really comprehends how firearms work? Using cannon loaded with solid shot for extremely close range anti-cavalry fires, for example. Or expecting smooth-bored muskets to have greater range and effective accuracy than recurve bows? Also, I must note that the film's visuals did NOT give the impression that one side was massively out-numbered by the other - indeed, at first, I thought it was the Taiping side who came up short.

Kurosawa is a great director, but the efficiency of firearms (taken over by the Japanese from the the Portuguese) is displayed in a let's say optimistic way, regarding fire frequency, range and accuracy. Two shots in a minute were the maximum, the impact of musket shot . The scatter of the shots was high and the probability of hitting a single enemy rapidly fell on longer distance than about 50 m, and the impact of a shot was potentially deadly only up to 200 m, at least against armoured men.
You're thinking of early matchlock muskets, these are more modern fusils. Of course, still VERY outdated compared to what other nations had at the time, like the Europeans and japanese, but still really useful for the then war situation. Besides, two shots a minute is terrible, there are accounts of well trained soldiers during the Napoleonic era getting three and even four shots a minute, combined with revolving fire, it was devastating. For two shots a minute you'd be dealing with a rifled musket for marksmen, who DO prioritize good accuracy and range over speed.

I would not really deny your interpretation, but rather generalize it. For Kurosawa, the triumph of the new ways neither is something to celebrate, nor is his fascination of the old ways nostalgic, but I'm inclined to say that the clash of the old and new ways reveals in a way the futility of human efforts. It all reminds me of a famous haiku, in which the grass on a former battlefield is all what remains of the warriors' dreams.
Yeah, Kurosawa really did want to show the futility of war... especially in Ran. Conflicts in many of his works are often caused by trivial (In teh context) things and result is great tragedy.

When you attend public school in the United States, you learn all about the American Civil War. Students come away not knowing (or caring) that there were other massively important events happening in the world during that time, France invaded Mexico and the United States could not do anything about it (see the Clint Eastwood movie, Two Mules for Sister Sarah), there was a civil war in China that made the American Civil War look like a dust up between children, and in and around it all, the Opium Wars, the result of which is affecting us now. Japan's militarization and hostility were in large part a result of what they saw the West was doing to China during the Opium Wars period, and that militarization led to WWII. The history of the United States, contrary to what was taught in my youth, is not entirely congruent with the history of the world and I am still not certain that most people have understood that. @wingolf22 nope, volley fire, artillery, rocket barrages and even use of coloured rockets as signal flares were all made in china by the 14th century and probably earlier. however, the manchus who invaded in the 17th century being nomadic raiders, found the use of firearms both alien and abhorrent, thus their usage declined amongst imperial troops who reverted to bows and arrows. taiping rebels didnt have this problem and wouldve won had the empress not brought in european troops to crush it.

Firearms are a Chinese invention, but I doubt that it can be said Chinese "perfected" the weapons or the tactics. It were the political structures and doctrines of the Qing period which prevented such a big an ingenious people to keep pace.
They didnt improve gun . the western technology go further than chinese even they invented gun and gun powder first
the technology of qing dynasty was even lower than the previous dynasty Ming, because qing was nomads from North, they were good at and proud of riding shot and didn't concern technology that much, totally developed the wrong way
No not really.

黑泽明是日本的,这是中国片
You're thinking of early matchlock muskets, these are more modern fusils.
Of course, still VERY outdated compared to what other nations had at the time, like the Europeans and japanese, but still really useful for the then war situation.
Besides, two shots a minute is terrible, there are accounts of well trained soldiers during the Napoleonic era getting three and even four shots a minute, combined with revolving fire, it was devastating.
For two shots a minute you'd be dealing with a rifled musket for marksmen, who DO prioritize good accuracy and range over speed.
why Kurosawa? He has nothing to do with this movie.

The Opium Wars are also part of the reason why China is hostile to the West now; they have not forgotten their Century of Humiliation.
Americans think their country is the most important

however, the manchus who invaded in the 17th century being nomadic raiders, found the use of firearms both alien and abhorrent, thus their usage declined amongst imperial troops who reverted to bows and arrows. taiping rebels didnt have this problem and wouldve won had the empress not brought in european troops to crush it.
