You may have heard of the Toyota AZ engine. It was designed for Toyota’s economy cars and they used it in a wide range of their vehicles. Unlike the AZ engine, the ZZ engine family is built for performance. It was the first four cylinder engine from Toyota to use both an aluminum block and an aluminum cylinder head which saves a ton of weight. The most notable application for this engine is the Lotus Elise. My name is Bryce with Dust Runners Automotive Journal, and this is everything you need to know about the Toyota ZZ.

had the 1zz for almost 18 years and eventually the piston cooling channels clogged leading to the dreaded oil burning issue. had a 2zz with aftermarket intake and exhaust headers along with exhaust system installed. Also went from 5 to 6 spd. 114whp to ~196whp with stock ECU (aftermarket ecu would achieve a bit more power). More than enough power for daily. 23yrs with the celica and still a joy to drive.

I just recently got rid of my 06 XRS and this videos made me nostalgic of how good that engine was to me. Only problem I had with that engine was the water pump and belt tensioner going out at around 45,000 miles. This engine loves to live in the higher echelons of the RPM range, so those components will give in if you constantly drive in that range. Plus climate could have a significant impact, as well. A cold air intake and a really good exhaust gave her a really satisfying scream when the high cams would hit. Even building up to the high cams sounded really good and linear due to the fact that this engine makes power across the entire RPM range, with a very narrow boost when the high cams engage depending on application.

2zz was also known to have valve spring issues but this was usually only at sustained high rpm use such as racing. They also don't use cylinder liners and so require coated pistons or, better yet, iron liners to use aftermarket forged pistons, which also strengthens the block somewhat. They are also open deck engines and so not the best candidates for high boost. To bullet proof a 2zz: pistons, rods, liners, billet oil pump, valve springs. Do all that and over 350hp and over 8000rpm reliably are possible.

Even when you rev it to the nuts it's still hard to stay on the big lobes.

From reading up on forums (so not super reliable but still good to keep an idea on) there's the issue of the oil pump gear (mentioned) since it's made with sintered metal, there are people that make billet and upgraded versions. The other issue is the oil pan, which is known to run dry under hard cornering, due to the lack of baffling. According to some, you can swap it with one from a 1zz oil pan, which has baffling for cornering but the negative of running dry under prolonged redline driving. (more than 2 minutes)
A MASSIVE thing you missed I'd say is the MMC cylinder walls, so swapping to forged internals would also recall changing the cylinder walls to the strengthen steel found in most aluminum blocks. MMC walls CANNOT be honed so if they are scorched the walls need to be replaced, honing or boring just ruins it. This adds to the cost.

2yrs ago I bought a 2004 Pontiac Vibe 4cyl 1.8l base model engine size 1zze-fe, the mileage was tapped out at 299,999. plus an additional 10 to 15,000 more miles over the odometer from the owner, I recently started having no start problems, so I replaced the spark plugs, valve cover gasket, crank sensor, timing chain and water pump assembly.new starter, new battery. The car ran for 3 or 4hrs, I shut the engine off, no start. A mechanic diagnosed a blown head gasket, stopped up catalytic converter and badly fouled plugs, Question? If I replace the catalytic converter and spark plugs, and use some blue devil gasket sealer will this correct my current no start condition?

Yes but no. All 2ZZ’s are identical internally but there are some differences. Early 2ZZ’s have different lift bolt’s, 2004.5 and later 2ZZ’s have secondary air injection and there are a bunch of different tuning differences depending on year, make, model and location. The only actual performance difference is arguably the air injection but not because of the air pump itself, the exhaust port supposedly flows just barely worse than the non-air injected 2ZZ’s because the air injected ones have a small hump in the port. It’s not even a 5% flow difference and really doesn’t effect performance enough to care

The oil pump on the 2zz can be an issue, but another common issue is the metallurgy of the OEM intake cam, I’ve had my 2nd cyl intake cam wiped and the rocker broken as well. Celica forums and lotus forums talk a lot about this issue and some controversy over what causes it such as misaligned oil passages and the fact that the oil has to fight so much gravity to make it up hill to the highest point of the eng to reach the intake cam, as well as the lotus’ oil cooler potentially over cooling the oil to the point the viscosity is too thick for it to reach the cam. As well as the factory just had issues with the metallurgical properties of the cam itself , lending to its weak properties and inability to hold up to slightly increased performance demands. But either way, still such a great engine and good example of the composite metal matrix lending to the high durability of the castings. You hardly scratched the surface with this video man, so much you could talk about

Since the original oem cams had metallurgical issues, obviously replacing with oem can lead to the same issues. Ideally, if you replace the cam and rockers , and ensure that all your oil passages are good, then you should be fine with every day driving. After I saw that I guessed that the rocker below could be in bad shape as well. So that's what making me believe that my misfire in lift is because of cam wiping/rocker damage.
However, it's a lil confusing because not all 2zz owners have cam wiping issues especially on the toyota models. This issue is prominent on the lotus model I believe, because they're tuned harder from their factory

Well, not exactly. The main issue here was caused by bad piston design, specifically oil ports on their sides which were supposed to direct oil scraped by piston rings into the crankcase - number of these ports as well as their diameter were insufficient and because of that the oil stayed in in extremely hot spot of the cylinder for extended periods of time causing piston rings and oil itself to wear out quite quickly. The issue has been fixed however, all engines produced after 2004 were fitted with redesigned pistons and piston rings (oil capacity of the engine has been also increased by up to 0,5l), there was also a recall in 2005 for for fortunate owners which covered changing pistons, piston rings, and engine's short-block assembly (as cylinders weren't supposed to be honed/bored again due to their nikasil coating). Previous 2004 recall that covered only the piston rings change (for the old, faulty design rings) didn't really resolve the problem as those new rings were still prone to excessive wear.

Those small economy engines, little brothers of the 1ZZ with which they share the top-end, the block and many accessories are often forgotten, but there is something interesting about them : they have some pretty decent potential, and they can easily be fitted with 1ZZ (and sometimes 2ZZ) parts which can yield up to 30-40 hp gains with a good intake and a tune.
With a turbo kit, the small 1.6 liter 3ZZ, which normally puts out 90-95 hp at the wheels (rated at 109 bhp) can easily achieve 210-225 whp. We're talking about a 130-hp gain that can be done on stock internals! A small economy engine that can have its power output multiplied by 2.5 on stock internals is something that should have been talked about...
