To me this episode signifies the end of an era, which leaves me with feelings of happiness and relief on one hand and somewhat sad on the other.
Now I expect that Sail Life will live up to its name by providing us with interesting sailing adventures to enjoy plus the occasional repair sessions.
I think many of us will be watching to see how well all the electronic gizmos play with each other.

A lot changed for me since my last sailing adventure. I got hacked and lost my old youtube, and all the people I subscribed to. But I also got away from sailing activities, and today I just felt like returning to the sailing arts. I'm so happy to newly sub to Athena with my new youtube account. Be blessed.

Awesome following this journey. I started watching when I was working for the UN in Syria during the war and it saved my sanity; I could tune out to the bad stuff going on around me and watch you achieving glory (sanding) and spiffyness every week. Well done you two; may you have fair winds and following seas.

Hi Guys, we have a FP-5000i generator identical to yours; it has been great.
A couple of cautions, it will shread the impeller in seconds if raw water is accidentally left closed; there are no second chances. Thankfully the pump is made by Johnsons who charge around $13 for spares (part 09-808B-1). We carry three! Secondly, I accidentally filled the cylinder with water through my own stupidity in flushing engine with fresh water during service. After service the engine locked blowing starter motor fuse. Water was easily ejected by removing cylinder head glow plug, attempting to start engine then refitting glowplug. Thirdly, the raw water out pipe connects to brass barb on heat exchanger. Heat exchanger vibrates with the engine so the raw water outlet hose must have some flex as without it, the hose barb will fatigue then break off; it happened to us.
Congratulations on your 444th video! Cheers.

You are a very lucky man you found a wonderful 1st mate. It is finally time to box up the sanding equipment and set out on your journey. You have brought endless entertainment to my life for the past 1/2 decade and I'm sure that will continue. Thanks for tackling projects I will more than likely never attempt myself but after watching your positive attitude towards the unknown I feel like I could. I wish you safe passages ahead. Thanks

I’ve run the exhaust out thru the stern which has eliminated back flow while sailing. Our boat tends to rise up with a following sea which helps greatly and we have never experienced any issues with our Panda mounted off of the centerline. Good luck as you set out.

I can't believe it's been 5+ years already. WOW! Still looks like there is a ton of stuff to do before leaving. I hope we can get a final tour of the boat 🚢 before ya'll head out. Stuff like did you get the hinges on the refrigerator top made and installed? Or the tank underneath it up and working? Or all the chain ⛓ plates 🍽 covers on? Or the rewiring done on the cook top and oven done? Or all the rest of the work in the head done?
But here is an idea for your cabin sole. us vinyl flooring. It is water 💧proof and is very durable. Take a look at lifeproof very good flooring.

Congratulations on reaching such an epic milestone - not many people have the stoicism to execute such a lengthy project - well done!!
The South coast is very expensive, Scotland’s weather can be brutal. Have you considered the east coast’s river Orwell? There are many Marine businesses that supply services as well as boat builders - Spirit Yachts (all wooden yachts), Gunfleet and Oyster yachts. Suffolk Yacht Harbour and Fox’s Marina each supply a wide array of services with many companies supplying services.
If you make it to Suffolk, you wont be disappointed with what is on offer! Further to this, it’s primarily a yachtsman’s area.
The river Orwell is also set in an area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB), so it’s a great place to enjoy some down time and to see the best the county has to offer!

Texas Taco Salad, we use this when we have lots of driving to do and want a one dish meal to eat. Make taco meat like normal use the shredded taco cheese and cut up two avocados and three Roma tomatoes, you can add white or yellow onion if you like cook enough rice for two times two (four meals) next when ready to eat we add sour cream or ranch dressing. Place the rice in each bowl layer in the meat and crunch up either Tostitos or just taco chip or plain Doritos in each bowl to liking add cheese and nuke the bowls until the meat and rice is hot (stick your finger down int the middle of the layers) add more chips if desired I crunch mine up small. Next add onion and Roma’s and Avocado mix and eat you can add a little or a lot ranch and Sour Cream how ever you like. Store the leftover meat in a ziplock bag and chill same with the rice. Oxygen makes things go bad so press out all the air and zip it I would mix the rice and meat leftovers equally so it’s just a matter to spoon it out when your hungry! Bon appetite!

I think you two should look into meeting up with Rhys and Niamh on Zora while you are in the UK. A collab episode between the four of you would be awesome!
Edit: I also would advise looking into an isolation valve rated for the temps of diesel exhaust. A standard gate valve made of stainless should be OK. If you put it directly at the genset exhaust it would eliminate the heeling issue as it would block any water trying to get to it. It would also mean you can't use it sometimes, but better to have an optional isolation than not.

OK... I'll be the bad guy: Great decision to deep six the Perkins-Frankenstein genset and replace it with the Fisher Panda! With an 21st Century sailboat and all the electrical doo-dads you have installed, it's great to see a nice new well-designed power source you can rely on. Plus, it's way "mo-quiet." Beautiful work. And killer food prep by Ava. I am now hungry. :)

    Fair winds Mads and Ava!
We are also cutting the lines and heading south about a couple of thousand miles to escape winter in the US Northeast after a somewhat extensive electronics refit of our own. Sea trial on the fly for us too, although we got to test out much of our new systems riding out two major tropical storms out on anchor.
I am hoping that you chose the canals route because I'm simply love canals and would be thrillet to see you two document traveling through them as you move towards your next destination.
I hope your alternator issues are easily solved. It lools like you are very close to fixing the alignment issue. If you do end up reinstalling the stock alternator be sure to check if you need to adjust your charge controller settings so that it doesn't overwork the little guy and burn it up .

    • @svbarryduckworth628
      @svbarryduckworth628 3 роки тому

Florida--ish. W spent most of last winter on a ball in Vero beach due to COVID-19. We don't want to deal with island BS so we are probably going to stay in the USA where our movements are not going to be locked down, especially in Florida. We are in it for the long haul, in our fourth year full-time so there are many other years in the future. I'd rather not go back to Vero again all year, someplace we are able to be on our own hook yet be close to pump outs and water. A nice grocery store and other cruisers to hang out with would be nice too.

Enjoying your cooking as well, Eva. Suggestion: Muesli. Invented in Switzerland, I think. 1 part oats, 1/4-1/2 part dried fruit of choice, 1 part Greek yogurt or kefir, 1 part milk of choice, chill for 12 hours (overnight) and enjoy. May be made a few days in advance. Covers several passage breakfasts with a really healthy, raw treat.

My 2 cents is Scotland. I had the pleasure of living there in the early 90s and it reminded me of the olden day USA. England was always the more modern Euro-style place and Scotland was the slower paced, more trusting people. The nice thing was, I could order parts from London in the morning and they would be at my house near Aberdeen in the afternoon, via regular mail. That was unheard of in the states.

I came to the show "late" - when the refit of Athena's interior was in full swing. Or should I say, the first refit, before discovering the rot. Recently I watched an early video of Mads nervously declaring his intent to give live-aboard life a good go.
There is an impressive narrative here, for someone keen on editing - from the first tentative steps on Obelix, to getting Athena, to the first refit works, the fall of discovering the rot and the labours to rebuild her better than you probably intended when you first got her. All capped off with the trail line ..
    "Now, the adventure REALLY begins"

Regarding your destination, why not split the difference and come to Scarborough? It's just about due west of Denmark so it should be an easy sail, given that the winds in the North Sea seem to be mostly Northerlies nowadays. For things without templates: Put some painters tape on the back side, and apply some paint (or anything that'll transfer to another surface easily) then just press to the wall. You can peel the painters tape off, and you'll have a painted mark of where you need to cut. Great trick to make really precise cuts for electronics.

We are following you on UA-cam for years, I must say that we are very happy for you guys both that finally you off to sailing on Athena and also very sad for ourselves in the meantime as we'll miss out on our Monday morning comfort programme. Good luck!
If you decide to come to South England and you need a quick guide in Portsmouth for food and drinks perhaps to the famous Dockyard and what not, we would be privileged to take up on that quest.

Reality TV on Cable TV is about idiots doing stupid things or being humiliated or or otherwise faked "experiences".
Reality TV here is about cool people doing a great job, displaying their talents and sharing their experiences through what they do in the real world.
There are many sailing-related channels on UA-cam where we can learn a lot, we see people being treated with great respect, and being noticed for what they do best.
What a great world in which we can learn all sorts of trades, techniques and it is quite easy to see who is real and who is not: If you are real it is amazing, if you are not real it is evident.
Thank you guys for the great experience so far. Now I am looking forward to see your travels and other DIY projects and, one day, i hope our paths will cross.

The end of an era and the beginning of another. I just checked to see how long I've been following you. You had not yet sold your house if I remember correctly so it has been at least 6 years. It feels a bit (...a lot!) unreal. When did all that time pass?!! However, during all that time one thing has always been true every week. Every week I've looked forward to watching your new upload on Sunday evening.
Thanks for your videos until now. There is plenty of "stuff" to learn in them.
And, of course, I'm looking forward to watching, like and comment on your future episodes. Godspeed!! 😉

For the Alt see if you have any play with the top mounting bracket, if not you could grind out some slots in in the bolt holes to give you more play forward and aft. To help bring the pulley alignment to spec

    Mads/Ava
If you get to head across to Scotland and then through the Caledonian Canal it would be worth your while calling in at Caley Marina which is just south of Inverness. They are very good engineers, and Jamie has a lifetime of experience with Volvo engines if you should have any snags to try and resolve.
