- This week didn't quite go as planned but I got started fixing Obelix to get her ready for sale. I also replaced the stock fans in my fan heaters. It's so nice and quiet aboard Athena now!

This video is still of good quality, don't worry about it. To produce a 'very' good video EVERY WEEK is more than anybody could ask for.
Thank you so much :)
Agreed. This is real life DIY. Not every week will have Hollywood-level drama and excitement. Faking or manufacturing it would be mega-lame.
There is plenty of tension building already with the launch date marching ever closer and closer with each passing week.
Get those stickynotes hopping from one column to the next.
Here here! Iv been following since very early on and I still get excited when I see a new video up and this week was no exception. Your work rate is massive my friend you will deserve a lifetime of rest and adventure when you finally set sail.
Always! Always excellent videos.
I agree, great video and interesting as ever!
I noticed your parents all ways show up when there’s dirty work to be done. You are lucky they love you so. ;)
That's just what we loving parents do. We have two sons, just a little younger than Mads and whether its a house or a boat they are living on, we stop in the help out every so often. Yes, Mads. You're a lucky guy!
In this video is actually very nice that you are explaining how-to. Sometimes the videos can be a bit like "follow me in what I'm doing" instead of explaining how something is done, which is part of the beauty of DIY videos. It's understandable considering the time constraint you have with the deadline and so on, but just wanted to mention it.
Mads, you have the rare talent of making an 18 minute video seem like 4 and a half minutes long. Best wishes.
Don’t apologise. To be able to to produce quality when you are so busy and upside down is an enviable skill. Thanks Mads.
Women get excited by the finish men the fit and that makes a brilliant combination. Looking forward to next weeks Vlog.
Hi Mads, you have a full time job, 2 boats on the go and a amazing UA-cam channel, that you dedicate your time to every week, I think you do a fantastic job, looking forward to every future episode. 👍🏻🇬🇧
Oh, I'm sure he has a production staff working behind the scenes. It's impossible for all that work to be done by just one guy. Isn't it?
6 Min with 1k views. Wow. Wow. It's because we love your videos. Thanx for sharing.
Mads you are the only person would say "these will basically last forever" and then lament that you cannot add glass as well and call it (forever) "good enough" Thank you for another excellent video 😊👍
Don’t apologise, still enjoyed it all. Been with you since the beginning, you and Samson boat Co, Acorn to Arabella,Seeker and the Old Sea Dog have kept this old man entertained these last five odd years, thank you.
Hey Mads. Don’t apologize for your videos. You are giving us something no one else is. Thanks for what you are giving us. Alan
I agree! Your videos are centered on the serious DIYer. You've given me so much!! Mads, never apologize when you give what you believe is not the best. No one else comes close!
No apologies necessary, Mads.
You’ve been going strong for years now, and the “light at the end of the tunnel” is within reach.
Keep up the great work!
Well said. What ever is wearing on you is temporary.
⬆️ Neil, the light at the end of the tunnel is just someone with a flashlight walking toward him. A boat will always have a 'endless list'.
WOW first few seconds and I can immediately tell the video quality is better.
I'm loving the Sony A7C! It's so nice not having to manually focus before every shot!
I actually enjoyed this video specifically because it's sort of tying up the loose ends. This makes the series progress nicely. Not every video has to have a specific focus and story. A little change now and then is good.
For me and I am sure for many of your fans, the only bad video you could make is no video at all. That would make for a very bad Sunday video. Thank you Mads for sharing.
Great call on the Noctua fans. Those have been top tier for gaming computers and workstations for over a decade. High performance for those who want silence. Glad to see you were recommended those. I've been watching for years now. So proud to see how this has come. Incredible job.
Nothing wrong with that video Mads. No apologies neccesary. Keep up the good work.
It's really nice of you to clean Obelix so well for the next owner. I've never had a previous owner of anything even a house ever do that and the first thing I had to do before moving in anything was thoroughly clean them...Honestly, people clean cars more for sale than anything else from my experience. Noctua fans are the bomb! Really like them. Really like your videos and can't wait for Next Week's...Wish I has a time machine just so I didn't have to wait a whole week...LOL
The video is just fine Madds.
Most boat owners can only dream the previous owner put as much care and effort into maintaining the boat as Mads. The new owner of Obelix will have a great boat and has a UA-cam reference library of all the work done!
Hello from Ontario Canada,
Love the channel, no need to apologize for the multi-jumbled video, life doesn’t always run in straight linear fashion. Thanks for keeping it real Mads!
As always I've enjoyed u saying Oblix over an over. I like ur soothing voice... Plus you are a great person... Great work... ✌🏻💗😊❣️
Dude, stop apologizing, this is what we're here for. Some weeks you crush out a month's worth of work, sometimes you just fix some hatches. All good. Just wondering, have you ever thought about getting a freezer?
No need to apologize you always put out good videos!
After watching for a very long time I feel like I can say this...Mads...you don't have to apologize for being busy. Life sometimes will do that to a guy, especially a guy juggling as many items as you are. All is well, keep plugging along, and we will keep watching. You are a good guy who is getting very very close to the end of a long journey, and in this case the end means a new beginning. We are all pulling for you.
Sunday is always the best day. You and Gone with the Wynns both post and it’s always great!
It's all good Mads, I wouldn't worry about this type of video.
Love your videos, I can watch them for hours without getting tired LOL looking forward for more updates.
Keep on the good work, I hope one day I can do exactly the same thing you are doing with Athena...
Hi Mads, That heating blanket you got for the osmosis has got to be the best multi tasker!
Sir. I have watched every video in this series and never once been disappointed. I look forward to next Sunday with anticipation. Thank you for your wonderful channel!
looks like Obelix needs someone like you as the new owner
I feel like what makes your heaters somewhat inefficient is the restricted inflow into the boxes they are mounted in. The fans are probably working hard to overcome that vacuum.
Maybe cutting a few tasteful long narrow vents near the grill would help - they look nice (rounded over, etc) and would provide more area for the intake.
Mads, Obelix will be a great boat for her next owner. If they are following you they will know you have taken very good care of her, a good boat but not perfect and they will have the opportunity to make it their own.
excellent videos, you should be proud...thank you for letting us come along on your journey....
Hey I am from 1973 and I don't feel old.😁 I love your channel
You make the best sailing DIY content
Rolling with the grain gets the sealer into the grooves
Man don't be so hard on yourself. This video was awesome! I have been following you for a long time now and look forward to all your videos! I have learned a lot from watching your journey. Thank you so much for sharing!!!
Mads, you never have to apologise for the quality of your videos, they are spiffier than ever!
There are controls that can be added to hydronic heating systems (like yours) that alter the water temperature based on the outside air temperature. Systems like this can prevent overheating and increase comfort. It seems just the kind of thing you would be interested in having on Athena.
Big improvement in the sound, I agree. Good job Mads.
I’d like to buy her just so I could show off my hatches built by Mads the master builder. You put more care and skill into just a simple hatch replacement that many would ever do.
Mads, absolutely no reason to apologize for the video etc. I can’t speak for anyone else but I’m happy just to get my weekly “Mads Fix!” I look forward to watching the videos and seeing what you’ve been up to this week!
We're all so invested now that as long as it shows you and you working on the boat in the video, we won't be disappointed.
I do hope the videos keep coming when you are sailing ;o) ...else my Sunday evening will be rubbish and disappointing! :D
I know how tall you are Mads and living 6 years in a 30 footer is an accomplishment in itself!
You can add more CFM by just making a small fan box/mounting adapter for additional fans to the back of the radiator. Where you have a fan sitting flat "_" against the radiator, create a "V" mount to mount an additional fan.
Looking great!!
Another great video Mads! I watch your videos every week because I find them so inspiring and interesting, no matter how big or small a project you are working on... gives me the motivation to crack on with my Mini Bus to Camper conversion!!! I have learnt and am learning so much from you, thank you!
Thanks as always.
I'm so impressed, but not surprised at your work ethic. it shows your true self. I think the quote is, actions speak louder than words . Your a good man at hart. fab to watch. loving your progress. who ever gets that boat after you will have sum good bones to work with .
We usually say that 3 dB loss is "half the noise", as it is a logaritmic scale. Also, 38 dB is supoposed to be quite silent (less than an air conditionner)... mayobe you could also think on lowering noise by some kind of insulation in the boxwhere the fan sits in? Anyay, always as instructive as usually. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks :) With the 17 dB fan I can't hear it at all :) I'll use some more power tools without hearing protection then I won't be able to hear the 29 dB one either ;)
@@SailLife Mads, check how temperature comfort is changing with open or closed front cabin doors as you might consider an adjustable air vent in the bottom of this door to allow for circulation. Great work and you might stop putting efforts and time into Obelix for a treat of advice on who will be the next owner. Just an idea...since you need to be ready soon as well to start sailing. Enjoy your videos big time. Thank you!
@@SailLife haha, welcome to my life... "What's that at you said?"
@@SailLife A little trivia for you, the vibration amplitude at 17db is slightly larger than the diameter of a large molecule. Human hearing IS amazing.
3dB loss is OK as the dB is a ratio. However 38dB as a noise measurement is meaningless. You can measure the height of trees in decibels. So you have to say what the unit is. You probably mean 38dB(A) which is not the same as 38dB(SPL) or 38dB(C). The part in the brackets is the unit. It is a bit like saying the length is 38. But 38 what? Inches, feet, millimetres or light years.
Just FYI, those super quiet computer fans are often more fragile than louder ones that you might buy specifically for marine applications. You wouldn't want to be sailing in heavy seas and then have your system stop working because the fan fell apart. Keep durable spares!
Shoot, don’t worry about your videos, they’re always good! Wow, hauling out your own boat, amazing!
"....And ummm, Yeah..."
The new Sunday drinking game. Why not? Bob Newhart has been off the air for years and if you remember, anytime someone on the show said, "Hi Bob" you had to take a swig... it was a riot and while "Hi Bob" was fun Madd's, "...and ummm Yeah..." is now the updated version, Right Mads? "ummmm Yeah..." EVERYBODY DRINKS and the crowd goes wild !!!!!
I've detected some similar speech patterns in videos from Sail Life, Sailing Uma, and Atticus Project. Who's watching who? :-D
It's all good Mads. Good stuff as always!
I forget sometimes how everyone is not an expert on engines. For me i always knkw the condition of engines i own but average people don't know those things. Good to try and see different perspectives sometimes
Obelix next owner will surely be very happy to do some of his own finishing!
Well done
Cheers
Best fans in the tech world. I use them on my computer builds all the time. Somewhat expensive but worth it. You can increase the RPMs on the Nactua fans to get better air flow. That is if they have RPM controllers.
Agree with others, I see nothing wrong with video quality (either pictures nor editing!).
I know you must be somewhat emotionally attached to Obelix, having called it home for eight years, but dont get carried away with fixing her up for sale. If the cost of the fix up is more than what you can increase the price by then dont do it! I see nothing wrong with that as long as buyers can see what they're getting and can factor in their own costs
This has been quite a journey you have taken us on in your refit. I admire your sticktoittivity. I am good at starting projects but not so good at finishing them especially the sanding and tedious task you have undertaken. Hats off to you👍
Yes after years of toil the finishing touches do take on a special meaning.
i am sure the boat will go fast and move along on your current project the clock is ticking on sailing. stay safe and have a great week as well
Convenient timing! I need to replace the hatches on my boat, the previous owner had replaced them but his job was... Bad. The plywood was cut too small, so all the weight was ok the teak decking on the hatches, which caused them to fall apart rather quickly. I have 3 rather large hatches to cut, and is want sure how to seal them. Thanks a ton!
Love your video's, just take your time to take care of the troubles and we will wait for you.🥰🥰
The "Love Boat" is coming along nicely
It seems even the videos you deen "not so good" are still better than most out there. Keep up the great work brother. I'm proud or your massive accomplishments.
Wow, it's so crazy to see you back on Obelix again, but with such increased video quality. It made me a bit nostalgic for the early days, so I went back to an old video, and your production quality has increased so much since getting Athena. Also, even in Athena's current state, she looks like so much of an upgrade.
As usual, I have no intent of ever refitting a boat, but I am a fan of your hard work, it's a lot like watching This Old House on Saturday afternoons when I was a kid, and the fact that this is a boat makes it much more interesting.
Anyways, Happy Sunday, and I am also looking forward to when Ava joins you very much, because I also enjoy watching the joy she adds to your channel, she seems to be a very cheerful lady. Keep up the spiffy work Mads, you are getting so close to the finish line.
Great job you are doing on Obelix. The new potential owners will have to fight to get it. You are doing great and spare no effort to provide a nice "old" boat to his/her new owner. Cheers!
Dude, your videos are always top quality, don’t sweat the small stuff! I watch many sailing videos’s and your’s Is a the best!!! Rock on🤘
I think if you get more soft stuff in the forward cabin like clothes and curtains and maybe a soft headliner in parts, the noise will seem less as well. You have an awful lot of hard flat surfaces there that would seem reflect noise more. Speaking as a not audio expert though. Plus I lean towards having a cooler sleeping area than the rest of the house (um, boat) so tuning the heater's CFM down to make it quieter is a win win for me.
I really admire you.
Good stuff as always Mads!
We've been watching from the beginning. Hard to believe it's been 5 years.
Noctua, good choice!
Always great content Mads! Look forward to watching every Sunday! Can’t wait til you guys start sailing, you’ll soar to >1M subs!
Good as always
I really enjoyed this video.
I've used those Noctua fans. They are super quiet and last forever.
That crack in the companion way frame shove some epoxy resin in there and clamp it will be good as new
Mads, rebuilding the engine is not necessary unless the one in there is got high blow by or other issue. Just because it new rebuild doesn't guarantee longevity, just that someone spent time and money recently. A 1973 engine doesn't mean much to those who know, it's far more about the hours and maintenance of it.
good old noctua fans
For the door in the front cabin. I would leave it as is. I would install a " Ball Catch " to keep it close . And a celling " Magnetic door stop " to keep it open. If you need to use the settee ,from that side, just close the door.
Another great job.
If any prospective buyer for Obelix sees your UA-cam channel, I'm sure they will feel confident in their purchase. Also, if you're buying an old boat you expect to work on it. After all, that's half of the fun!
Your bad videos are better than most people's great videos. Enjoy your parents' visit.
13 min and 2K views....we love you Mads....
As always Great Show
Denny from Minnesota
Another awesome video mate😁👍🏻
Sets up awesome heater system. Nek minnut sails to Bahamas.
A better measure of the fan's impact on heater performance would be to measure the entering air temperature at the back of the coil (EAT), compared to leaving air temperature at the discharge side (LAT).
Reducing the fan cfm might actually increase the LAT, but the total heat output from the coil/unit likely will be reduced.
I would also try to gauge the fan performance with the cover removed from coil enclosure, and compare that with the cover in place.
I was not clear where you were measuring the "delta T", but the typical delta for a hydronic heating system is typically much larger than the 8 degrees C you mentioned.
I have a hot air Espar heater that does a good job in New England. It is quiet because the blower is in the aft of the boat. Maybe if you put your fans on the other side of the radiator and sound insulation around them they too will quiet down. Or just think about the Caribbean or South Pacific where you won't need heat. (-4C here now)
A somewhat extensive refit to Obelix would be appropriate!
No need for apologies. Regardless it is entertaining to see what u are up to. By the was weres the pup at haven't seen him in a video in a bit.
Sounds much better you could double stack the fans no db increase but air flow is , or you could just add more heater units.
I think as soon as you start cruising it is time to rewatch phase 1 of the MCU (the Mads Cruising Universe)
Watching all of our favorite Heroes like the "OglorousSandingSander" and the "PrettyDangSpiffyMan" save our all beloved Athena from the dark lord of Time will be so cool.
Hyped for phase 2! :D
Sailing S/Y Fie solved the problem by installing regular radiators, maybe an idea in the forward cabin.
I tried priming and painting my plywood cockpit locker lids. 3 coats of primer and 3 of polyurethane paint. It lasted 5 months before the edges started swelling and the plywood delaminating. I’m now rebuilding them out of fiberglass.
No need to apologize Mads
Be safe and sand on..
The lack of sealant on the bottom of the wood can actually help to keep it dry and lasting longer. If there is a part of the wood that stays consistantly dry doesn't need to be sealed for some other reason: I wouldn't paint that part; let it breathe. This should offset any eventual water ingress into the wood and better tolerate less frequent maintanence.
I was looking forward to you moving all the sticking "to-dos" to the "done" area of your list.
