Props to Ubisoft for showing that back in the 18th century, there were penguins (or penguin-like seabirds) in the arctic side of the planet. Before they went extinct because of human hunting activities.
Well in fact Rectus it can turn out that it isn’t always the voracity of Man that causes extinction events and that scientists actually believe it was civil war that ended The Great Northern penguins. It turns out that their species were tragically snuffed out by their own hubris. It’s thought that this is why ancient fishing tribes were recorded in cave paintings and tablet etchings referring to them with names like “Bitchy Birds”, “Mean Bois” and “Assholes.” History is a many-layered cake, eh?
You can call Ubisoft many things, but you can’t deny that the amount of work into making sure their games are as historically accurate as possible is crazy.
The idea is that he can't move (and the crew is getting nuked) because the Assassins are pulling the swivel gun trick on you and shooting all over the place with it. It's pretty cool to see how devastating it is by being on the receiving end of it.
For me, it's the best game in the American trilogy. A combination of the naval battles of Blag Flag and the land gameplay of the previous trilogy. The story is also much better than 3 (or anything after Rogue) and about as good as Blag Flag.
@@alexevans4637 I think Edward's story was okay, though the overall plot is confusing and padded. This is why Rogue is better, it feels tighter and you get to know the villains before you kill them.
After I finished Hope's mission in Rogue and sailed off to do the next mission in the North Atlantic my crew started singing "Lowlands Away", which is one of the more somber shanties. It felt very cinematic and helped me connect a little more with Shay's sadness at having to kill someone he obviously looked up to; the Morrigan was just sailing slowly on the waves as the sun was setting, turning the water a golden orange amid the silent blue glaciers all the while the crew briefly filled a crushing silence with one of the saddest shanties in the game. After they were done, there must have been a minor glitch because they didn't go on to the next shanty, so I sailed the rest of the way in silence. Probably it was one of the most touching random moments I've ever had in gaming, even if the initial emotional connection to the NPCs was lacking. It's still something I think about.
That’s so cool, and no that’s not a glitch I had the same thing happen in Black Flag with the same song. Maybe it is a glitch and it is just common lol idk but still awesome the way that worked out
9:34 having him established as an experienced assassin who's recovering from an injury, thus explaining their dependence on him, having him arguing with Achilles before with achilles repeatedly pulling rank and him growing frustrated with their blind loyalty with him instead of trying to save civies would aid the betrayel
I am 2 years late, but this could also be integrated in the tutorials. You practice being an assassin in a simply way because a junior is observing you as an example. Then you could reverse it by getting hunted by an assassin as their practice, which is both a way to tutorialise this games new feature as well as subtly hint at it being a future game mechanic.

That’s a really good point. In Black Flag so many missions did end with I’ll meet you in a month here or at least meet me here when you are ready. Really encouraged that open world exploration...
Rogue feels like a passion project that was rushed. It’s such a amazing concept, and great story, but it needed to be fleshed out. The ending left me thinking “that was it?” It should have had another year.
Yep, same here. I can take a short story, but this was ridiculously short to the point that it may have fared a bit more respect as DLC for Black Flag and not a full release.
The bases in this game were so satisfying the enemy placement meant you could parkour and sprint through them and stealth kill so smoothly it was such great level design.
I had two big problems with this game: 1) Its very short, and you join templars very late. It really doesnt use its awesome premise much 2) Assassins are too bad guys and templars way too much a good guys from a sudden. I always liked Haytham's era templars, their methods were extreme but they had goals that made sense. I would love to explore the "bad guy" perspective more, instead of just acting Templars are goody good shoes now
I just took that as the Templar’s understood Shay was more loyal to the cause of helping the world than the Templar’s specifically, and having him join in on any shady shit would likely make him turn
Riastradh Plus! There should more explosions! But seriously I TOTALLY agree. Ubisoft are extremely skilled craftsmen but it seems they might feel the need to balance violence by constantly aspiring to absolute moral clarity. I’ve often wondered if maybe the ratings board sees it the same way. I would like to see the moral ambiguities of both sides leaned in to. Don’t bother specifically describing morality at all in the motivations of characters or the factions, just describe their wants and actions and let us judge or not judge and simply play. (Ooh! And boobies! More explosions and boobies!)
I also hated how at the beginning Shay didn't take being an assassin very seriously, so when the first few Templars he talks to give him the slightest bit of "But what if order is good tho" he is flabbergasted and can only give incredibly limp responses before he starts being converted. It would have been cool to see an Assassin who actually believed in the cause and knew what he was talking about come to believe in a different world view but in this one it's just the Templars giving Shay the first complete view he's ever had.
Thomas Birt you gotta admit tho, convincingly writing someone going from “freedom is great” to “yknow maybe freedom isn’t so good” is very difficult since most people do agree freedom is pretty neato
@@riastradh that's because compared to all the interactions so far, colonial templar were the most open minded ones, more human actually, remember how shocked Connor was when it's revealed that Charles Lee had nothing too do with the fire that killed his mother? I mean odyssey predated the creed and was probaly only called assasins creed because its in the same universe also odyssey wasnt focused on being assassins it was more based on choice wether you wanna be a warrior or a stealth person and this is proved by the fact you could have multiple endings also shay is a former assasins so it would make sense he would use his training and haythem was always different from other templars instead of the regular plump man who is very corrupt he was the type to get things done by himself like in the beginning of 3 where you play as haythem
@@gamingrubix1722 a lot of Odyssey was stealth isn’t a very good option tbh there were times I played through with stealth and osrs if the enemies are to high in level backstabs won’t mean shit and some of the level designs are meant to avoid stealth in most cases unless you max it out, find the good stealth weapons and come back later, if not your breaking cover, and just taking on the entire camp at that point, the level system in AC in general was a problem for me since Origin, except now they can hunt you down and out scale you massively for 80% of the game which is annoying af when they happen to be in the area your trying to stealth play

One of the things I kinda missed was the feeling of being on the other end of the power scales; in other ac games you're always an underdog, hiding while the templars have control over the government, armies and are using a lot of money to gain influence. In Rogue you made enormous amounts of money, but you use it to upgrade one ship, your outfits and clothes and improve houses. It didn't feel like you are in charge, leading an army or simply using money and power to get things done.. you're still an outlaw and at times even the English soldiers attacked me, minutes after I fought to give them a fort. (I know there are moments you help armies and fleets, but I'm talking about the overall feeling of the game; being on the side of the templars felt like being with a slightly different faction of assassins)

This is my all time favorite ac game, the open sea and naval gameplay from black flag, the setting from ac3 plus the arctic, and a unique story are an amazing combination. My only complaint is how short it is.
Unless it's _The Vampire Diaries,_ and that very line in the beginning of S1E1 holds a deeper and advanced meaning, especially for those who've seen the whole series.
It is not optimized better, it is just tailored for a weaker hardware (it was just ported for PC few months after because of Unity's backlash). Rogue was designed for PS3 and 360, Black Flag was already a cross generation game.
The fantasy of Rogue? *Being a Mercenary in the Seven Years' War.* Partaking in espionage, stealing documents, seeing the world change and learning about the events in Europe. My biggest problem with this franchise is how the fictional history overshadows the real history. Joan of Arc? Had ancient blood. The leader of the Nationalist party in WW2? Had an apple of Eden. It removes a lot of the mystery and magic from our real history. In Rogue, the fictional plot doesn't overshadow the historical war. The fantasy for me, in this game, has always being a Colonial Naval Agent partaking on one of the biggest wars of the past.
Exactly, spot on. If Ubisoft just removed themselves from the pseudo history lessons, and outright make fictional games like the rest of them, theyd do us a great service. Imagine learning about great people of history through assasins creed with a black and white view of assassins vs templars, it is not only very misinformative it is downright dangerous to children not yet well versed with history.
Peter Panther yeah, I really feel like one of the core reasons why I love ac2, brotherhood’s and ac 3 story so much is because the 3 have hard influences of real story. More so than the other games, it helps a lot in the immersion. 3 is 80% about the American revolutiom, 2 has the Leonardo Da vinci era and although it doesn’t really cover BIG events , the atmosphere is nearly perfect and having Leonardo be constantly a part of the story, have the doctors wear the bird masks due to the eminent plague and the carnaval aspect in the second act ... it makes it such a good feeling game for those who appreciate that historical period. You obviously can say this about every ac game, but I feel like 2 & 3 nail that aspect perfectly.
I love how in AC Rogue, in which you're playing as a templar, has a lot more stealth components than any other previous AC, where you played as an assassin. The fort takeover missions scattered in map are easily my favorite actives.
I really like that one of Shay's gripes with the Assassins is that they make him wake up early. "At least we did things where and WHEN we wanted to, Liam"
Rogue is somehow my favourite AC, I completely see the flaws but I’m ridiculously attached to it. I do completely agree that Rogue just could’ve been longer and more fleshed out from a story point. I get that Unity was the priority, but Rogue could’ve done so well with some more sequences.
@Chazz Ravenelle - Shay has his own theme, dude. ua-cam.com/video/KTvYCG69fNk/v-deo.html What about the three combat themes? What about the naval combat theme? What about the pause menu? Loading screen? Atlantic atmosphere? I'm shaking my head at you all. :'(
I'm just gonna say that Christopher Gist was an actual person back in the day. I think this game takes place after his major expeditions, but he was one of the first Europeans to explore the Ohio County. I don't think he was very historically accurate, though.
"I don't think he was very historically accurate" Doubt we can say whether he was or not considering he does literally nothing in the entire game, he's just there.
I will never forget the authoritarian air the templar outfit gives you and the brutal swordfighting this game has. The feeling of you controlling a naval force and taking over locations from the french. It's a special feeling I get from this game. The character I control resonates with me. No longer did I need to hide my face with a hood , I was a templar enforcer doing what I thought was right.
I hate it how the redcoats still attack you when as a Templar, you're technically on the same side, for seemingly random reasons. Also, I wish we could use English ships in Cormac's fleet.
Shay Cormac is my favourite Templar alongside Haytham Kenway. 6:36 "Settlement settlement" 11:29 I agree. 11:58 The short relationship between Jesse and Jane from Breaking Bad is an excellent example of what you said. 31:50 Whoever wrote that comment is a genius. 35:15 She did a brilliant job with AC Rogue OST. She should score more video game soundtracks. 35:50 Sounds like it's time to hire Po
I really wish when Shay confronted Achilles he had a line along the lines of"collaterals can't be avoided" or"duty before the heart" Or something like that, cuz I really felt the dude(Achilles) was as confused as everybody about the earthquake
What happened at 26:26 is a parkour down animation it only happens if you press the drop key (interact) while near an edge in high profile. On keyboard and mouse it's pretty easy to accidentally trigger a drop because W is movement forward which you expectedly use often but drop is the E key which is right next to W if you aren't careful you can hit it by accident easily.
13:19 I like the symbolic sight of Shay taking off his hood that is a trademark feature of Assassins + getting shot in the back by one of his former allies really cement his turn to the Templar side
More like cement him turning away from the Brotherhood entirely. It wasn't the Assassins betrayal that made him want to join the Templars. It was the fact that he felt that he needed to stop the Assassins before they could do more harm and needed the support and resources of the Templars to do so.
Ubisoft deserves a lot of credit IMO for Rogue. They put out a last gen game in a series at the same time a totally different next gen game came out. And they didn't half arse it. It's almost as good as Black Flag and it ties in with the next gen game's story. This was great for those of us who hadn't got a PS4/Xbox One at the time. We were still able to play a new Assassin's Creed that had time and effort put into it
Is kinda funny that even the small changes in Rogue`s naval combat came from AC4, specifically from Freedom Cry; except from the icebergs of course. Great video, as always.
I am addicted to your videos. You actually got me wanting to replay the Colonial Brotherhood games. I paused the Black Flag video to watch this one, as Rogue is honestly one of my favorite games in the franchise. It's like Black Flag in a colder climate.
Rogue is also my favorite game, love the Morrigan, and I really like the outfit choices (Colonial Raider anyone?) but I am finding some of the chests and loot seems to be un-gettable. Just finished the main story, at long last, and now trying to complete it all.
Yeah, it's absolute torture to get them all, had a good time exploring the world, but finding them gets really excruciatingly long, but it's possible! And yes, the colonial outfit is really cool, makes me always (try) to roleplay, but I prefer one outfit just because of the sheer coolness, the master templar outfit, it's... Beautiful, after blowing all those ships up you get this gem, if you can withstand the challenges to get this one, which you probably have if you're trying to get all collectibles, then do it, I believe it's worth it.

A. Dimchev I like 3 better then rouge just because of the combat animations but other then that they are in the same place as my favorite ac games
I loved this game
That's beautiful, dude.
That’s so cool, and no that’s not a glitch I had the same thing happen in Black Flag with the same song. Maybe it is a glitch and it is just common lol idk but still awesome the way that worked out

I am 2 years late, but this could also be integrated in the tutorials. You practice being an assassin in a simply way because a junior is observing you as an example. Rogue feels like a passion project that was rushed. It’s such a amazing concept, and great story, but it needed to be fleshed out. The ending left me thinking “that was it?” It should have had another year.
Thats basically 90% of games imo
Unity is the passion project that was rushed. Rogue is just a cash in for last gen console users.
Yep, same here. I can take a short story, but this was ridiculously short to the point that it may have fared a bit more respect as DLC for Black Flag and not a full release.
It is not
Every AC game after 2 got this treatment. They were making YEARLY games.
The bases in this game were so satisfying the enemy placement meant you could parkour and sprint through them and stealth kill so smoothly it was such great level design.
Totally agree and this is what sets it apart from Black Flag for me, exploring the different locations was so fun as they all felt designed with care
@@relientkgeekyep. Designed very carefully in fact.
I had two big problems with this game:
1) Its very short, and you join templars very late. It really doesnt use its awesome premise much
2) Assassins are too bad guys and templars way too much a good guys from a sudden.
@@ahongzbillyAC ROGUE still is a hidden gem.
It’s sad when a game where u play as a Templar is more or a “assassins creed game” than Odyssey
I’d rather play it than odyssey
@@DrippleDragon You gotta spec your character for stealth specifically. For the bosses or whatever backstabs won’t matter but the grunts are more or less similar to enemies in the past

AC Rogue for me is 8.3/10.

Shay Cormac is my favourite Templar alongside Haytham Kenway.
6:36 "Settlement settlement"
11:29 I agree.
Righteous, the Kenway Saga's my favorite.
I liked Syndicate more.
@@unicorntomboy9736 what
@@stooly7885 I prefer AC Syndicate more than this game
@@unicorntomboy9736 what?
@@unicorntomboy9736 Yeah, how? I know you have opinions, but what?
The prisoner of war ship battles were just the slave ships battles taken from Freedom Cry.
i am addicted to these years later videos now 😭
I was honestly expecting that starting monologue to end with “my name, is ROGUE”
19:28 he died with his sword fully erect
I really wish when Shay confronted Achilles he had a line along the lines of"collaterals can't be avoided" or"duty before the heart"
Or something like that, cuz I really felt the dude(Achilles) was as confused as everybody about the earthquake
i don't think Achilles was too confused as during the training memory you can hear adewale inform achilles of an earthquake
"...the cross I would choose to bear..."
Quite literally
I love that you see arno and elise and you kill arnos dad. Such a great crossover
We were still able to play a new Assassin's Creed that had time and effort put into it
Imo, they should've delayed Unity by a few months and just let this game be the main AC in the meantime
Is kinda funny that even the small changes in Rogue`s naval combat came from AC4, specifically from Freedom Cry; except from the icebergs of course. Great video, as always.
I just finshed this game yet but I relaised that one of the most underrated games ever
This game is so underrated. One of my favorite AC games.
I am addicted to your videos. You actually got me wanting to replay the Colonial Brotherhood games. I paused the Black Flag video to watch this one, as Rogue is honestly one of my favorite games in the franchise. It's like Black Flag in a colder climate.
26:34
The speed up foot chase is hilarious.
You need like 8 hours somehow useless running around that's all but a really great game even now in 2021
What do you mean? i had no trouble on getting the chests.
