It has been 4 months and 13 days since I last uploaded a video Hey y'all. Sorry for not uploading for like all of fall. Been pretty busy with college classes, so I haven't really gotten the chance to upload or stream the past few months. But that's hopefully gonna change! I'm planning on uploading once every other day this winter break, streaming 4 times a week, and when the next year starts, hopefully still doing at least 2 videos a week and some livestreams. Taking a break really made me miss uploading UA-cam content, so I'm super motivated to get back to it. Hopefully y'all will still be there for me! Also, I caught covid AGAIN and that's been a pain, so I can't really stream for a bit either. Anyhoo, thanks for coming by, leaving a like and a comment really does help me get back to the platform I used to have! Talk to you guys soon -Omicron

As someone who has played Minecraft as a kid but hasn't played the game in years and has only made aware of the new textures through this video, I vastly prefer the new textures. I like the extra detail put into them, and honestly I feel like they've improved the look of the textures without taking away their Minecraft-esque identity. There is one game that is kind of similar to Minecraft that I'm way more passionate about, and that game is Terraria, which got tons of sprite changes over the years. I never disliked any of the sprite changes made in Terraria, and have never seen anyone complain about that either. So it seems this texture change discourse is kind of exclusive to Minecraft.
I think that's just because people really liked the more in-depth and detailed Terraria textures. It's what the genre is known for. I also think that mc players want the old look for nostalgia, while terraria has a lot of newer players.
i think the main reason, is the fact that so many textures stayed for so long, and then they just updated them all at once. if they had spent the last 10 years constantly replacing textures with newer better versions, (like terraria) there never would have been a problem. they kinda did this in the first couple of years actually. gravel, grass, and cobblestone, all went through several changes before they became the iconic ones.
Fully agree. As someone who played Minecraft from 1.9 at least on PS 3 and then quit for a couple of years, I still prefer new textures since they look a lot clearer and have less contrast
Really tells you how lazy they are, when the most popular game on the planet, owned by one of the most successfull companies ever, can’t even hire ONE GUY to draw some pixelart in a certain style... He wouldn’t even have to actually design new textures, just make alternate version of the generic stuff jappa creates.
I think the majority of people that will heavily agree with the texture changes are builders. Generally speaking, the textures are less noisy (I wouldn't say more "saturated", that's not quite the word) and some are less saturated (think mossy cobblestone) in order to fit in with block palettes. Usually, the more desaturated, the more natural; colour theory proves it. I honestly think none of the textures are a downgrade except for maybe diamond ores (Jappa changed the ores because of accessibility reasons, totally understandable). It would be a lie, subjectively, to say any of the textures *look* worse. There's just a lot of nostalgia attached to it, instead. For the record, playing since 2013.
This!!! Building is so much more fun with newer textures. Before 1.14 I made a point of not building with mossy cobblestone because it stuck out so badly that it was almost impossible to integrate in a way that looked good. Now I love all the mossy blocks and use them constantly, and it's allowed me to explore the overgrown building style which is now my favorite style to build in.
And artists as well, especially those who make textures (pixel art). I kind of got into pixel art and Minecraft texturing around a year ago and I agree with your point. I myself also prefer most of the newer textures because they are smoother, have better shading, and for me they are just overall more aesthetically pleasing. Of course, not all of the new textures are an improvement to their older counterparts, but I feel like as someone who enjoys making visual art, I have more of an affinity to these newer textures.
As a colorblind person the ore change is terrible. Also mojang has replaced the confusing ores with glow lichen, which I confuse for diamonds about ten times per ten minute caving session. The confusion even extends to people who aren't colorblind
I personally love nearly every single new texture and I've been playing this game for a very long time, I dunno. I feel like they DO actually keep whats iconic about them, just are better, more skilled and consistent pixel art. The only sole texture downgrade I feel exists was mentioned in this video; the Diamond Ore texture. It's definitely too dull, it should be way brighter and bluer and prettier. The other ores I love though
Wait what? You're saying the Diamond Ore texture is dull but Omicron also dislikes it for the opposite reason of being too saturated. The older texture is definitely paler than the newer one. The only thing I can think of people hating it for other than level of saturation is that it has a gradient into the stone color since it might de-emphasise the overall shape it was recognised for.
I started playing in 2015 and I really prefer the new one because I didn't play too much back then (2015-2019) and I mainly played creative. Then I started survival on 2020, so the new one always stuck on me. I once used the old one, but my eyes would get hurt easily.
Personally, as a slightly les biased opinion I believe that the textures are more streamlined for consistently. The saturation makes it more friendly to people, most 1.13 textures were also kept in and not changed, for example, coral. I think it was more of a “all textures need to look similar” thing.
I started played MC around 2013. The lack of different blocks made it so much harder to create what ideas i had in my head. As an OG player i love that Minecraft today doesn’t feel scread to change what could be much better like the texture update! For the most part i love the changes and fixes
In my opinion, the only texture that underwent a visible downgrade was the texture of fully grown wheat. The old one with its black tops and brown stalk looked sooo good, and the new one feels very weird due to it having no vertical color gradient. Other than that, though, the new textures look awesome. 10/10 I’d prefer them over the old, retro-looking textures every time.
bippity bime, your opinions are mine. i totally agree. i've played this game for 7 years now, and i still will always prefer the newer textures, but wheat, i will never forgive
In my head the nostalgia part and the artist part of my brain are fighting against each other. I have absolutely amazing memories with the old textures but from an art standpoint they are just so obviously worse at every single aspect of good art. The colors are a million times better in the new textures, the coherent art style makes is so much nicer so look at (although I feel like the new brush item does not fit the art style actually) and the shape of these items it just all comes together to create such a pleasant art style… but sometimes I just miss the old textures - or maybe I miss the time that I associate with those textures
I actually really like the new textures. They're a lot easier on the eyes imo. Going back to the old textures gives me an actual headache. Dont get me wrong, I dont hate the old textures as I am one of the many who grew up with them having been playing the game since 2011. The nostalgia is real but I still prefer the new. And as the years continue to go by, I've found that I really like texture packs that make the game feel "more realistic" or are just easier on the eyes.
I honestly have never understood why people get so upset with the new textures. I understand there is nostalgia, and they're iconic or whatever, but I still think the new textures are miles better. I started playing the game around 1.7, so not the most OG player, but I had my time with the old textures and still prefer the new ones. It just looks so much more professional, and it should look like that, since it's one of the most popular games in the world. Idk
I don’t understand why people get so angry at people who prefer the old textures. They just have rose-tinted glasses for the new textures because ”new is good”, and refuse to acknowledge that the new textures just look generic and unprofessional. I just don’t see what’s so much better about making everything look muddy and noisy. New textures are such a mess, and show no understanding of the 16x16 format what so ever. Old textures where actually designed, while the new just look like they where drawn by someone who just learned how to draw.
@Cat Made by the people who were actually making the game, and knew what they wanted things to look and feel like. Its just rude to say that i has no artistic merit. Its like saying that a ps2 styled retro looking game is ugly and should look like GTA.
@@mechamedegeorge6786 Made by people who's job is to brainstorm algorithms, build the systems and mechanics, properly structure the code they write to avoid the need of rewriting as much as possible, look for potential and actual bugs, analyze which parts of the code are most needed to optimize if possible and not to sit on a couch thinking "what players are supposed to feel when they look at this sprite". It's not about programmers being tasteless or whatever shit some might say, it's about them having the other, way more important stuff to do. It's not efficient to bother them with designing visual part of the game further than sketches for the design docs, which are a must-have thing for every dev team since it allows for easy understanding and communication on what AND HOW each dev has to do. And yes, artists are a part of dev team unless we're talking about outsourcers which isn't the case for MC. They also "actually making the game" and if they were hired after the plan for the game was set up (or were missing when team discussed their plans on the game), they'd easily get every tiny bit on how the game should look and feel like from properly made design doc and could bring up even more great ideas since they are the artists - people who often have better intuition and understanding on how to make people feel in a certain way. I'm talking as someone who's both studying programming at uni and learning design by himself while modding some simple games and trying to mimic their style. MC included, though I'm not familiar with java yet, so only learning MC pixel art style. Or in short, your first line is so wrong I had a physical pain after reading it
@@dustronyt4565 Well, i will not adress the whole comment but Its true, artists are part of the dev team, but its clear that the art direction and feeling of the original textures compared to the new ones is completely different in their more retro look. What i was trying to say thay overall Jappa was trying to make Minecraft look more like your modern average indie game by making things shinier and with less contrast (i really like the dark outlines btw), as after all it was made after quite some time since Minecraft was released and its popularity grew, while the original ones fit more with what the devs were thinking as the features were added. In my opinion the new cobblestone is the worst offender of them as it looks so lifeless and uninteresting, almost covered in sugar, even the first versions of the new cobblestone looked way better than what is now, which is pretty bad if you consider how cobblestone is one of the more iconic elements of Minecraft world. in fact if you looked at the first version of Jappa "default" many textures like grass, cobblestone and even netherrack look way better than what we got.
Something that I think not enough people factor into the equation is that new players will have nostalgia for these textures and features, and will react the same way we are to future updates.
Agreed. This is how I feel as someone who started playing in 2019 right after the update happened. The 1.14 textures are the iconic ones to me, with the old textures feeling pretty archaic.
As an artist and a builder, the older textures were charming on their own, but they obviously were not made by professional artists with a unified vision of how the game should look, and it really shows when trying to make cohesive build palettes. I also think jappa's textures are incredibly respectful to the original game (probably one of the best retextures of a game I've seen) and the backlash against them is super unfounded and fueled by nostalgic rage. You don't have to like the new textures, but I think accepting and understanding why they were needed is important.
Agree on every point and zamn, that "nostalgic rage" sentence. Couldn't say better, and to add even more I don't remember anyone to nail it that perfectly
"You dont have to like them, you just have to accept it" is such a dumb mindset Like, in my view the artstyle of the old textures fit the game much more nicely than the new ones. That isnt just some nostalgia i have since the first versions of the jappa ones did look somewhat appealing to me while the final product just repulses me
I can understand the whole “netherrack should look bad because the nether is hell” argument, but I’m already so used to netherrack being an actually DECENT block to use lol
In my opinion, as a 2014 player, the old textures were horrible, an eye sore, they were incredibly ugly and I often used texture packs to replace them, the new ones, even some of the textures that were proposed before the ones we have right now I really like
I use the old texture I just use programmer arts fix texture pack. The new textures r probably nostalgic and iconic to people who started playing with them, similar to how the original textures are to us. I learned to respect both of the textures but I prefer the old ones because they I feel they fit Minecraft’s retro pixel art aesthetic better.
That was the charm they had to them, they were textures that were actually amateurishly made by the devs themselves. The new textures have this "generic corporate pixel-art" look to them.
I like the new textures more, it makes them pop out more Imo. But I'm a resource pack enjoyer so idc about making the game look different, it doesn't take from my experience, it's only a visual change that you can just switch back to with a couple clicks lol
My biggest issue with the new textures is that it isn’t as visible in everything, if every texture on everything was changed to a more distinct textures I wouldn’t mind it so much but when you have one of the more classic looking block next to newly textured blocks it just aesthetically clashes in a really bad way.
Apparently this is an unpopular opinion, but Bro naw, the new texters are great, ive been playing since 2011 and when i look back at the old textures they are ugly AF to me. And im glad you said it was subjective cuz it really is.
same i played for 2 years before the 1.14 texture changes and i'll just say it new textures are better and now i can go to the nether wthout destroying my eyes and wanting to rip them out anymore!
My main issue with the new textures is the shading on them. Some of the blocks like stone bricks or wood planks are shaded as if the light is coming from a particular direction. This is fine for 2D art but straight up just doesn't work in a 3D environment. I know minecraft doesn't have the most advanced lighting system by any means, but it still looks off when the light comes from one direction, but the texture makes it look like its coming from a different direction. The old textures were completely flat, which makes them work under any lighting conditions
Never looked unusual to me. Not sure why. I think the older textures being just flat made them worse than the new ones. If there's no depth to the textures then it just looks bland.
@@Hauntaku not the realistic things, but realism in blocks(not really real) I like the old cobblestone and wood because they have depth and the dark pixels are darker
If many Java users are going back and strictly playing the old version of Minecraft, then it would seem like Minecraft should've stopped updating a long time ago
I wouldn't say textures are more saturated these days, they are just smoother and they use warm colors like orange and tan rather than yellow. In some cases they are less saturated colors. 3:40 see its warmer, same with sand 1:58 I guess newer textures are smoother but with a lot of extra detail without a lot of contrast Huh even the sponges look more orange/brown 7:41
the only thing I like from the new textures is the netherrack. I really didnt like the fact that everytime I went into the nether, it felt like i walked into TV static lmfao
nettherrack is actually the only texture i dont like from the new textures, because i liked the fact that the nether was kind of ugly, and offensive to the eyes.
I prefer most old textures honestly. That's why I do use a resource pack. I do understand the need to change the ores tho, cuz color blindness. But the reason I love the older textures so much is because they just pop more. It's a lot easier to look at.
I would have a mixture of new textures and old textures myself, like for example I don't exactly like the new Netherrack texture for the vibe it gives. The old texture here gave a more unsettling feeling which was what the Nether was aimed to do. The softened look of the new texture may look excellent but it's not a perfect fit for its scenery. I want to customize exactly which specific textures I want old and what I want new for these reasons.
I guess, at the most part, people should just agree with that the game evolved, and it cannot be the same since its release to modern days. And overall, in the year 2023, the game shouldn't have the inconsistentcy between its textures, their style how it was with the legacy ones. Some of the textures had 20 different colours and the others had like 3 ._.
I remember when the Woodland Mansion became a thing in Minecraft worlds, in every single Xbox 360 world, there would be a Woodland Mansion in some random spot. I’d always try to raid them and proceed to die.
Speaking as someone who's been playing the game for over a decade (probably over 11 years at this point since I started playing before Jungles were a thing in Java) I must admit, while I didn't really like the new 1.14 textured at first, they have grown on me to the point where I prefer them over the old ones (if only slightly). The old textures still hold a special place in my heart though and I still play with them enabled from time to time.
The old texture scream “Minecraft” to me, while the new scream “fanmade marketplace texture pack” Minecraft’s purpose is to be simple, if they want to improve graphics and ruin the point of the game at least just fix lighting/shading, or add RTX shading to consoles for crying out loud. Just my opinion though, no hard feelings.
nostalgia is the reason you think that, the old textures were made like a decade ago by a single guy, plus, you can always turn the old textures back on
@@LookieSpookie well yeah, there’s a reason their called old textures, if you’re on Java there are texture packs that give the new items the more classic looking art style though
this is probably the most true and enjoyable video on this topic, ive been playing since 2015 and i like the newer textures more because of building but generally like the old textures more due to nostalgia, there always will be bias but we shouldnt get too mad over it as we still can enjoy the game with newer textures.
Ya fuckers build more on newer versions then old ? 💀 I automatically build more the older the mc version is. Idk why actually. Just feels/looks better.
I believe the direction Mojang has been aiming with their more recent textures is not for the sake of "realism" or making them more colorful or "saturated" as you put it, but rather to make them more readable and recognizable as the objects they are intended to be. Yeah, of course someone who has play every version of the game since "cave game" in 2009, they would look at the old leaves and netherrack textures and immediately identify what they are, whereas the newer textures look closer to the physical objects they are trying to be, whether they are representations of real-world objects or not.
I have been playing Minecraft for more than 10 years, playing for the first time when minecraft mobile used to be called minecraft: pocket edition. As much as old minecraft has more iconic textures and I have a deep nostalgia for them, I really like the newer textures. My opinion is that the textures from old minecraft were a little bit of a mash of different styles, and some textures did not blend well with others. The newer style of minecraft really helps to blend all the textures together and allows minecraft to have one constant style. The newer textures, at least for me, are much more pleasing to look at. Although, I still would like mojang to update the Programmer Art resource pack to re-imagine the newer update blocks and items post 1.14 in the older style. It would be really cool to see stuff like deepslate or any other new block as such.
As someone who's played old Minecraft on PC and XBox 360, I never had much of an issue with the new textures. In fact, I didn't even know just how many were changed because many of them were very subtle and yet I still liked them. I also found that at least on Bedrock Edition, there is a texture pack that replaces the new ones with the old ones so I think that should be a thing in Java as well to please both crowds.
personally, i like the new textures, and still love the olds ones since i also grew up with minecraft on the xbox 360 and i didnt have xbox live so i was stuck on 1.9 for 5 years before the xbox died and i was interduced to the village and pillage update on a new version of the game new textures for me are better but the old are goated aswell
I started playing again and I simply can’t get over the new caves. The black stone stuff is so incredibly hard of me to see since it’s so textured. I’ve been playing for a decade and never really cared about textures but Jesus Christ that black stone is an eye sore
in the end that is still such an dumb topic, like, man it's like only some pixels, you're not even gonna look that much at them, people are way too emotional lol(i only have 14 but i agree that some old textures are better, but i think the game as a hole is prettier than before)
I have an irrational hatred for the updated textures and it's not because of nostalgia lol. I just prefer the pixelly, bold look because to me, that's what makes Minecraft, Minecraft. The new textures are just too...bland and blended in my eyes, they feel less sharp compared to the original. There's only one block I prefer the updated look over the original look, that being crying obsidian, but despite that I never play Minecraft without Programmer Art on. It's so shameful Mojang refuses to update Programmer Art with the new blocks done in the old style.
7:29 Jappa is so right! If someone that don't know will look at the new apple's texture they will understand that this is an apple but if someone will take a look at the old one they will think that that's a cherry! And overall designers should make the best out of 16x16 resolution because otherwise the game would look bad and low affort. (just take a look at the old cobblestone and its mossy variant that didn't change since its addiction when the regular one did :/ )
I play this game for 9 years now, and honestly, as much as the old textures are iconic, I prefer the new ones, they're much more pleasant to look at. Im an artist too, I do pixel art sometimes, so maybe im a bit biased, but I really like the new textures more.
I first played Minecraft on the Xbox 360 around 2013, and while the old textures were nice and charming, the new textures do a far better job of giving Minecraft a consistent art style and feel. Looking back at older Minecraft gameplay, everything feels washed out, and all of the sprites have really rough borders, but now everything feels soft and smooth while retaining slight borders to keep that simplistic charm.
i think its funny people who says old texture were ugly and actual is better to eyes like older textures made you eyes instantly bleed and rot away in seconds
I don't get how the old textures strain people's eyes. They dont I can never bring myself to the new textures. Especially the new wood textures, I hate those
If a game gets more realistic - it gets more comfortable to play. To understand this you need to compare the alpha foliage and the modern one, the old water physics and the new ones.
@Fox No, it depends on the game. Also, Minecraft is not meant to be realistic. Everything is a cube, gravity only affects some blocks, there's a dragon...
@washed766 I agree, there're always 2 sides to a medal. In my examples, realism gave us more interesting mechanics and experience overall, but in yours, they went for realism too far for real and did not let slide interesting gameplay features.
honestly.I mostly prefer the new textures i dislike some changes though, but like its mostly just opinions. So we can agree to disagree. Some people just hate the new textures because of nostalgia and the fact that its changed, people are literally overdramatic about this change which is more annoying than anything else.almost acting as if textures weren't changed before.
An old minecraft world i had back in 2016 popped up in my head while watching this video. 🥲 It was a house i was building, with the nostaligic minecraft music in the background
I like individual old textures better for the most part (including netherrack) but I think overall many blend together more. The world looks smoother. That comparison you showed of the cave entrance in the desert was a great example. I like the old textures of each of the blocks, but the one on the right just feels like a world. I’m not thinking “wow the sand is cool” with the right, it’s looks worse imo, but the cave looks better. Hope this makes sense. Also, at least with Lunar there’s a “classic art” texture pack if you want to have new features with old art. Lava is another great example. I adore the old lava texture so much more, but lava pools and lava falls (in the overworld) don’t look very good.
I think you’re just nostalgia blind, Xbox 360 Minecraft was my childhood but I still completely think that Minecraft (at least Java) is better now and I especially love the new textures. I remember how much I preferred the new textures. I still have a lovely sense of nostalgia whenever thinking about old Minecraft and I still play on older versions on occasion and I don’t have a problem with the textures but the game feels a little less “messy” now and it looks nicer in my opinion
I think you just have rose-tinted glasses for the new textures. Can’t stand how unprofessional and blurry the new textures look, myself. The old textures have a better aesthetic, not to mention how much better they’re made. Distinct designs that not only fit the blocky world and look unique, but also often remain vague enough that they can be creatively used for multiple purposes. Funny how the old textures, drawn by programmers, show a better understanding of art than the supposed ”artist”.
"Features that make the game more complicated" I can agree because of the change with the nether item since now you need to find some weird red thing with an arrow😤
The amount of "I'm quitting because of this update" statements is so stupid. Like 'ok, and?' you wanna stop playing the game because of a petty issue, be our guest, there's no loss for the rest of us and we couldn't care less if you do quit. People get wayy too worked up about small things like even take discord's new font for example, it takes a while to get used to but after you do it doesn't make a difference at all. People just like to dramatise things and draw attention to themselves
this is what i think happened: mojang knew that no one like the old netherack textures (because tbf no one did) so they changed it to the modern more slick netherack we know today. but then we have modern textures next to old looking textures. so they those textures. basically it was a chain reaction. plus it would be hard to make new textures for new blocks know they HAVE to use the old style. personally i like the new textures. it'd be weird to have the old ones since they are so ... well yk, OLD. it went the same for fortnite and other popular games. u look at older versions and it doesnt look the same. sure its nostalgic but deep down everyone knows they dont want the old textures back. it just wouldnt feel the same.
The biggest issue with the old textures is because they weren’t standardized. The old textures didn’t really have any consistent style, and weren’t standardized. The main point was to add consistency. Even as someone who has been playing since 2013, the old textures just look flat to me. The new ones have this implied depth, which really makes the game feel more immersive. I’ve also seen polls that show most people do prefer the new textures. It’s really a vocal minority that took issue with it.
I remember when I was a kid, I wished that the ore textures all looked different from each other instead of being kinda boring looking recolors. So, like, I get the nostalgia, but the newer ore textures are a long-held personal request I've wanted since I started playing back in 1.3, so they're awesome to me
@@Notelu It was. Jappa went through a ton of itterations and even tweaked the colours ever so slightly as to accomate people with certain colour blindness. The biggest offender was iron and diamond ores because of (I *think*) Red-green color blindness
I have no idea why people hate the new golden Apple texture. I think it looks a lot better than the piece of shit before it. And yet, people for some reason hate it.
Ahh old Minecraft, we were younger and dumber, it was less complicated and everything was new and fresh. Even though I’m not even 16 I remember playing those versions on the ps3 and Xbox 360 and it was fun. Now with the graphics change and newer updates the game lost its vibrant, colourful appeal it once had. I know how to play but since I’m stuck in bedrock everything just sucks.
Still strongly despise the now default textures Jappa, you will regret not keeping the old textures updated with the new additions. Old textures are so fire! The new ones look like sh*t.
Just use a texture pack, god I hate the new textures, but I can change them, and idc what version I’m playing, if I see the old textures, I wanna play, like come on, the game is still the game, BUT MOJANG ADD THE OLD CRAFTING IDC JUST ADD IT

But that's hopefully gonna change!
The new textures are much better the old was were ugly and ive been playing this game for 10 years
Minecraft players can get very whiney when it comes to stuff about their game they don't like
I know it would just be extra work for Mojang, but I wish they kept updating the Programmer Art to also include the new blocks in the old art style.
I wouldn't use it, but it is certainly something they should do.

I'm a builder, and I like that alot of the old textures are more anbiguous as to what the item is, so you can more easilly pretend it's somthing else.
Honestly, I prefer the need textures. They feel cozier and are easier too look at
I personally love nearly every single new texture and I've been playing this game for a very long time, I dunno.
@@slantedhorizon1021 Dullness in its brightness moreso than its color, like yeah I liked it better when it was bright and a bit paler

People shouldn’t use nostalgia to trash the best textures.
I started playing in 2015 and I really prefer the new one because I didn't play too much back then (2015-2019) and I mainly played creative. Then I started survival on 2020, so the new one always stuck on me. I once used the old one, but my eyes would get hurt easily.
I think some people like old one because they played a lot back then (survival/smp/server), so the old one always got stuck on them.
The most nostalgic thing for me is the tutorial world on xbox 360 edition
Sameeee
Personally, as a slightly les biased opinion I believe that the textures are more streamlined for consistently. The saturation makes it more friendly to people, most 1.13 textures were also kept in and not changed, for example, coral. I think it was more of a “all textures need to look similar” thing.
I started played MC around 2013. The lack of different blocks made it so much harder to create what ideas i had in my head. As an OG player i love that Minecraft today doesn’t feel scread to change what could be much better like the texture update! For the most part i love the changes and fixes
FIXES?!
Indeed. The new textures are much better. Even tho it's not a big difference. People who like the old textures say so mostly because of nostalgia.

In my head the nostalgia part and the artist part of my brain are fighting against each other. I have absolutely amazing memories with the old textures but from an art standpoint they are just so obviously worse at every single aspect of good art. The colors are a million times better in the new textures, the coherent art style makes is so much nicer so look at (although I feel like the new brush item does not fit the art style actually) and the shape of these items it just all comes together to create such a pleasant art style… but sometimes I just miss the old textures - or maybe I miss the time that I associate with those textures

also players: new updates have too much stuff.

I'm talking as someone who's both studying programming at uni and learning design by himself while modding some simple games and trying to mimic their style. MC included, though I'm not familiar with java yet, so only learning MC pixel art style.
Or in short, your first line is so wrong I had a physical pain after reading it
@@dustronyt4565 Well, i will not adress the whole comment but
Its true, artists are part of the dev team, but its clear that the art direction and feeling of the original textures compared to the new ones is completely different in their more retro look.
Something that I think not enough people factor into the equation is that new players will have nostalgia for these textures and features, and will react the same way we are to future updates.
yeah omicron literally said that like 5 times in the vid
If the textures would get only better then they would be nostalgic but they would agree, but old textures are better 💪
Finally someone who gets it!
Agreed. This is how I feel as someone who started playing in 2019 right after the update happened. The 1.14 textures are the iconic ones to me, with the old textures feeling pretty archaic.
4:27 bro it’s the exact same it’s just more shiny
"You dont have to like them, you just have to accept it" is such a dumb mindset
Like, in my view the artstyle of the old textures fit the game much more nicely than the new ones. That isnt just some nostalgia i have since the first versions of the jappa ones did look somewhat appealing to me while the final product just repulses me
I dunno about you guys, but I can never go back to old netherrack. It's so ugly.

I dont mind the new textures, I change between new and old texture on pretty much a daily basis
As someone who played since 1.1, I think the biggest problem with Minecraft’s older textures was the lack of consistency
Iron having literally like 30000 colors on new textures: 👁👄👁
The old textures were completely flat, which makes them work under any lighting conditions
while i like the new textures...i agree.it just doesnt really work well if it assumes the lighting is coming from 1 direction
Never looked unusual to me. Not sure why. I think the older textures being just flat made them worse than the new ones. If there's no depth to the textures then it just looks bland.

I adore the old lava texture so much more, but lava pools and lava falls (in the overworld) don’t look very good.

this is what i think happened: mojang knew that no one like the old netherack textures (because tbf no one did) so they changed it to the modern more slick netherack we know today. but then we have modern textures next to old looking textures. so they those textures. basically it was a chain reaction. plus it would be hard to make new textures for new blocks know they HAVE to use the old style. personally i like the new textures. it'd be weird to have the old ones since they are so ... well yk, OLD. it went the same for fortnite and other popular games. u look at older versions and it doesnt look the same. sure its nostalgic but deep down everyone knows they dont want the old textures back. it just wouldnt feel the same.
As someone who started playing around the time Minecraft released on Xbox 360 you telling us about the world edge gave me some CRAZY nostalgia
the old ore textures will always be better than in 1.17
I remember when I was a kid, I wished that the ore textures all looked different from each other instead of being kinda boring looking recolors. So, like, I get the nostalgia, but the newer ore textures are a long-held personal request I've wanted since I started playing back in 1.3, so they're awesome to me
IIRC the reason they changed it was to better help color blind players differentiate the ores
@@Notelu It was. Jappa went through a ton of itterations and even tweaked the colours ever so slightly as to accomate people with certain colour blindness. The biggest offender was iron and diamond ores because of (I *think*) Red-green color blindness
*no*
oh no what have i done
I feel both old and new textures are fine, with all the good pointa both sides make, i kinda wanna see what a blend would look like
Nope. its gotten so much better that the original art is literally just pukeworthy.
tbh, I didn't like the new textures at first, but now that I'm used to them, they feel much more comfortable to my eyes.
For real.
Mojang : Makes Minecraft better
Players : "Nah, idk, its dont feel the same"
You know you're a picky kid when you are mad about some texture changes
Still strongly despise the now default textures Jappa, you will regret not keeping the old textures updated with the new additions. Old textures are so fire! The new ones look like sh*t.
Just use a texture pack, god I hate the new textures, but I can change them, and idc what version I’m playing, if I see the old textures, I wanna play, like come on, the game is still the game, BUT MOJANG ADD THE OLD CRAFTING IDC JUST ADD IT
Imo newer minecraft is better but I always play with programmer art and resources packs that make the game look simaler to the old Xbox 360 version
thankfully, texturpacks exist
been playing for 11 years and nah I dont think so
My favourite texturepack is the "Stay True" Texturepack!
