My husband speaks german and I recognize much of this because his mother had it written on freezer packages! lol Bauermtopf is "Farmer's Pot" but it doesn't say what kind of meat. Schweinefleisch is Pork, Grunen Hohnen is Green beans and Kartoffeln is potato. Hope this was a help!
Yes I was stationed in Germany for a while and recognised the pork and potatoes and other words. Love all the different MREs. A lot different than when I was in the military.
No, it's black current jam. I'm a German native speaker and wasted a couple of years in the German defense forces as a member of our 'special forces' (KSK) with several deployments to enemy countries ... tell me about our MRE's J
My mom was in the Air Force and she was stationed in Japan. She always told me that the MRE’s were always hard on her stomach so I think it’s cool that Emmy keeps eating these.
These MRE videos have got to be one of my favorite series on UA-cams. It is really interesting to see how different (and similar) a lot of countries are! Enjoyed this one as well! Keep up the great work Emmy!
LeniInChains ha yeah, they caused our pine trees to die from tree rust, a bad thing native to Europe. Trees there built an immunity to the rust and when black currants were introduced to the states, it brought the disease with them. Wiped out whole Forests of lumbar trees that were important at the time for building and stuff. So simple solution, ban black currant. It's not even a flavor of things in the states as it never caught back on after the taste was lost.
Schmalz is the fat that stays in the pan when you cook pork-belly in the oven for example. If you pour it from the baking pan into a dish and let it sit it´ll turn white and set. It´s super flavorful and salty if you make your own and it´s a savory bread-spread. Schweinefleisch is pork :)
By default "Schmalz" without any prefix refers to pork lard in German, which may also be labled "Schweineschmalz". If it was from another animal, you would prefix it, i.e. "Gänseschmalz" for goose fat or "Entenschmalz" for duck fat. For chicken fat you would rather say "Hühnerfett" than Hühnerschmalz and for beef fat you would use the term "Rindertalg" (Rind -> beef, Talg -> other word for animal fat).
2:53 - i had to pause the video when you held up the coffee extract to read the packaging.. it says its for 2 cups of coffee. i bet the same goes for the tea.. so no wonder if you thought it was strong af ;) edit: i had to check and it even says 3 cups ( 2:00 ) xD .. still wondering why you didnt thought the coffee was strong as hell too ^^
3 cups was the tea, 2 cups the coffee. So if she didn't think the coffee was too strong she either likes her tea and coffee rather strong or the BW stretches those numbers quite a bit.
Sleeper001 i know that it was 3 cups for the tea and 2 for the coffee, thats what i wrote but the point is, that she said that the tea was too strong, but the coffee wasnt. at least she didnt mentioned it.. thinking about the fact that the coffee also was meant to be for 2 cups i was suprised that she didnt mention the coffee being strong too
Whoa, thats really old ration. The new ones have different biscuits (more like normal tea biscuits, not that hard), another type of spread instead of the margarine, and some dried stuff like Muesli (with milk powder) and desserts like a straciatella-mousse or an lemon-creme (somehow like lemon courd I believe) also as powder (so just add water, give it a stir and let it set for a few moments). In addition, the meat-spread comes in a different container (more like the jam containers, just a little bit bigger). And the treats (the chocolate and the chewing gum) are "modern". You get a fully vacuum-paked bar of chocolate and a re-sealable bag with 10-12 chewing gum dragees. The they taste like they are supposed to be for aximum 5 minutes xD Also you can find the british cereal-bar in the MRE. Sometimes you get Tuna in light majo aswell. There is also an "EPa Leicht" (EPa light) It's not an 79 cent version (lets keep this serious ;) ). it contains mostly freeze-dried meals in bags. Overall, the EPa has a more colorful apperance today. I like it when we get it in service :) Grettings from Germany! Horrido!
Hi Emmy :) I really love your military ration reviews: you don't spend hours describing the packaging, or saying shit stuff (compared to other youtubers, I mean) You keep your videos short, you go straight to the point and you actually give us an idea of what the food tastes like! Just keep it that way, that's how we like it :D
She just runs through it though. She makes all the drinks, takes a sip. Opens all the food, takes a tiny bite. The rations deserve more than 8-10 minutes. I can understand not taking an hour, but ten minutes is too short.
As a random side note, I have OFFICALLY watched every one of your videos/videos you are in... in all your vids, EVERY time you take a bite, you look to your right. I LOVE IT! 😊
For a moment there I was wondering what the hell was so special about those matches - I had no clue that cardboard ones even existed! Sounds unpractical. haha
Every German soldier has a so-called cutlery with him separately. it consists of a knife, a fork, a spoon and a can opener, which can be connected to each other for compact storage.
I had the video running because it was almost over and started reading the comments - the noise got me unaware... ROFL. I had to rewind to check WHAT made the noise. :-D Looked cute how she crossed her eyes. I wonder how many actually saw that, I usually stop the video before it ends completely...
Just commenting because I know UA-cam likes that sort of thing these days and I love your videos!!! I feel like your content is so refreshing compared to most of the videos I find on UA-cam. I think it's so interesting to see you try all of these interesting foods and seeing how they compare to the food I'm used to. And you're so sweet and very good and staying on topic and still being really entertaining just because your such a sweet person and!! Keep on doing that because it's lovely and come on guys this video deserves more views that it has (I meant for this comment to be a single sentence I'm sorry))
I stumbled across one of your videos last night and I haven't stopped watching your ration videos!!!!! The second I was done work, got home, went right to your videos haha . Amazing videos :))
That meat is not embossed. It is debossed. Embossed is the text or patter raised off of the surface. Debossed is the text or pattern depressed into the surface
Ok so I just wanted to say first great job. Second idk if Steve1989 might have told you but that ration looks to have been from 1992. You are a brave reviewer to have tried that ration. Hope everything was ok after those are not really meant to hold up for a long time like the US mres. It must have been very well stored over the past 24 years or so. I'm not 100% but I think I saw 1992 on one of the gold containers. Anyways Happy Holidays.
Well it sounds like you were ok after. I really can't believe that thing was still edible. You can see the dates on the top of the tins. I'm almost positive that it said 1992. Yea definitely those EPAs are not meant to last very long. I do know a guy in Germany who has eaten one from 99. In this case he bought them brand new and stored them very very well. Loved watching it was a great video.
Yup, the containers say 1992 or even 1982 (not sure). Just googled it and German rations are supposed to hold up to at least 10 years. As long as everything smelled and tasted okay, you should be fine. It explains the really hard chocolate and gums though.
Bauerntofp is basically a farmers skillet...ground meat...potatoes... vegetables... seasoning...proud of my German heritage!! Love watching all these different MRE videos!! Johanisbere is currant. I wish I had seen these videos a long time ago!!
The 2nd meal you had " Schweinefleisch mit grünen Bohnen und Kartoffeln" is "Pork with green beans and patatos". "Bauerneintopf" is a mix of vegis and meat. In my region we use some wieners for that, but other regions take pork or beef. One jam was strawberry and the othere one was currant :).
Just found your channel, LOVE IT. You give very vivid descriptions-its not easy to give positive descriptions of MRE's! Definitely will be following you now!
I love your videos! I also love how you are able to taste foods from all over the world and also do it in a proper manner without being rude, you have a lovely and polite insight to things (: that's amazing!
Emmy in your German 24 hour taste test video. you were tasting what was label as Johannisbeer schwarz that you did not know what it was.it is know as blackurrant black or as black currant ( Ribes nigrum) it is a fruit that is particularly rich in vitamin c and polyphenol phytochemicals. blackcurrants can be eaten raw, but are usually cooked in a variety of sweet or savoury dishes. they are use to make jams, jellies, and syrups. if you wany to know more, just google blackurrant. Love your videos.
Dear Emmy, You have always been able to make me smile so I just wanted to thank you for all the lovely and adorable videos you do and I hope that you will continue for many years to come. I love your videos
those drinks are meant for canteen cups not a civilian household cups!! a canteen cup is 24ozs.!!!the German's still issue utensil sets, i'm not sure about mess kits though!!! one thing though, it's not wise to use water purifier's in clean water, it could be dangerous depending on what's in them!!!!!
No, Emmy actually prepared the drinks according to the directions on the bag. I doubt that the German military issued cups are the same as the US ones. Especially because we use ml and l in Europe, not oz.
Leyla Dawn no the latest issue is about the same as U.S. if not the same! I think your confusing the current one with the East German canteen cup which is smaller about 4ozs.and strapped over the canteen! all NATO issue is within 2ozs. of the same size if the cup fits under the canteen!!my info is about 2 yrs. old though!
Nothing in Germany is in ounces. The instructions clearly called for 250ccm (one quarter of a liter) of water. In those bizarre american units that is either 1.057 cups or 8.453 fluid ounces.
I've been binge watching your videos all day I can't get enough of you!!! Your voice is so calming and the way you have an open mind about food is lovely❤
I'm very new to Emmy videos but, like everyone else, find them excellent to watch. I think a big reason is that the editing completely matches her speaking style. There are hundreds of edits!
why do I love her so much? Oh! Because she doesn't use the overused UA-cam music, and her videos are satisfying and relaxing to watch, I love you emmy your videos are awesome
The first stew "Bauerntopf" could be translated as "farmer's stew". It contains all kinds of regional veggies. The second one "Schweinefleisch mit grünen Bohnen und Kartoffeln" means "pork with green beans and potatoes".
YAY! The MRE and ration videos are my favorite even tho I love ALL your videos, I was so excited to see this pop up in my notifications! I've been going through a really rough patch and you, Omocha Crush, and Mind of a Chef are the only things keeping me sane. Thanks so much for making them!
Yey! I don't know why I enjoy these kind of videos but militaryfood really reflects the culture. Like to make them feel like everything is normal when they're out at the field :)
the first one is bierwurst wich is porksausage made with beer, the second is schmalzfleisch is pork with extra porkfat, the first stew bauerntopf is pork and potatoes, the second stew is also pork with beans and potatoes. the black jam is currant jam
Emmy, do you have any food allergies? I often wonder this since you try so many different foods from all over the world! I think I heard you say you're lactose intolerant at some point but I was just curious since it's hard to know about food allergens in foreign food always :) I'm allergic to nuts and some legumes. Always have to be careful!
u have to use about the double amount of water for coffe/tea or the grapefruit stuff, a german military "cup" wich every soldier carries in his backpack has about 3 times the wateramount than a normal coffee cup
What kettle do you use? Currently deciding between either a simple just-boil-water kettle or a more exacting yes-I-would-like-to-not-scorch-my-green-tea system. Halp!
It's a Cuisinart. It's not cheap, but we use it everyday and it's changed our tea making game now that we can get the water at the correct temperature.
She literally translated Kaffeeweißer. It's illegal to use misleading labeling in Germany, so you can't include a word like "cream" in a creamer that isn't actually dairy. Similarly, rice, coconut, and almond milk are labeled as rice, coconut, or almond "drink".
This is the nicest most, non hateful thing I have ever seen on youtube. It's so calming.
Isabella White you should see crazyrussianhacker.
CrazyRussianHacker is too innocent for this world
Isabella White i agree it soothing
We've been on the internet for too long.
@ Boom! How kool is dat
I used to be a German soldier and yes, we always carry a fork, knife and spoon with us.

Back in 1996, when I was in the field I smeared shoe polish on those biscuits and used them as a firestarter. Burned like crazy

emmymadeinjapan The fruit of the johannisberry jam is calles 'currant' in english, its a verry popular fruit in germany, it is fruity, a little bit sweet and sour. :)
So did I. It was a great time.
these biquits are even designed to run as fuel for your cooker, no joke
Yes thats true. We also did that. The biscuits are perfect to start fires together with shoe polish. Very common practise in the german army.
In the German army they told us only to use those water purification tablets in extreme emergencies cus they are highly chemical and she just tries them like that 😂 tough girl, hope u were well after that 😅
yep "the water wont kill you afterwards but your guts will" they told us at least
Daran musste ich auch die ganze zeit denken 😅
Dachte ich auch so, da sterben nämlich Magen und Darm Bakterien ab
Na dann.... Mahlzeit....
they also say you should go to a doctor afterwards.
The biscuits are nicknamed "Panzerplatten" which roughly translates to "tank (or armour) plates", because they are famous for being hard and dry…
Secondary weapons to throw it in the enemies face.^^
Well, these "Panzerplatten" combinened with army shoe-cream are also an useful help to light a fire.
You can put them into your plate carrier and rush a full platoon alone.
Yes some do sharpen them and use them as Shuriken.

@@bit0159 Instant kil and reusable :D
EarMaster55 I’m sure they are not as hard as the biscuits in the French Rations de combat.
German-fluent friends, Thanks so much for the translations!
emmymadeinjapan
The German army uses a reusable cutlery system made out of steel, so no spoon.
emmymadeinjapan Your German pronunciation is really good I have to say ;)

That bloomed chocolate would be a perfect addition to the instant coffee since the texture is not that good for eating any longer.
that's a cool idea. I bet it would improve the yucky instant coffee. everything is better with chocolate :)
You’d ruin the coffee. It has fat solids in bar. But good idea 💡 anyway
Perfect idea, Craig.

Yea definitely those EPAs are not meant to last very long. I do know a guy in Germany who has eaten one from 99. In this case he bought them brand new and stored them very very well. Loved watching it was a great video.
oldsmokey she heated most of it so it probably killed most bacterias in there
Holy crap, it does say "made in 1992"... Kind of a dick move to send that to someone and have them taste it without informing them about it.
I wish I had seen these videos a long time ago!!
love the crunching sounds! adds stimulation for the ears :)
Bierwurst basicyl translate to beer Sausage. But i guess in english its called ham sausage.
The biscuits are called in the german (army) slang Panzerkekse (tank/Armor biscuits) or Panzerplatten (Armor Plates).
Just love the soldier black humor
The jam you couldn't figure was black currant. Greetings from Germany! 😊
Just found your channel, LOVE IT. You give very vivid descriptions-its not easy to give positive descriptions of MRE's! Definitely will be following you now!
love you!! been couch bound due to a ligament tear in my ankle & your videos are keeping me sane!!! love your channel!!
Get better soon!
shelby blair haha i felt the same way when i was in traction 😂
I love your videos! I also love how you are able to taste foods from all over the world and also do it in a proper manner without being rude, you have a lovely and polite insight to things (: that's amazing!
Emmy in your German 24 hour taste test video. you were tasting what was label as Johannisbeer schwarz
that you did not know what it was.it is know as blackurrant black or as black currant ( Ribes nigrum)
it is a fruit that is particularly rich in vitamin c and polyphenol phytochemicals. blackcurrants can be eaten raw, but are usually cooked in a variety of sweet or savoury dishes. they are use to make jams, jellies, and syrups. if you wany to know more, just google blackurrant. Love your videos.
I like her MRE videos, she talks in very authentic and down to earth manner. No pretentiousness and video is super informative.
Too short. Makes all the drinks at once, opens all the food, barely eats. Meh.
I love hearing German and actually understanding it. German class is paying off!
Dear Emmy,
You have always been able to make me smile so I just wanted to thank you for all the lovely and adorable videos you do and I hope that you will continue for many years to come.
In other words just over one gill.
I've been binge watching your videos all day I can't get enough of you!!! Your voice is so calming and the way you have an open mind about food is lovely❤
What was the worst ration pack you had?
*****
You ok buddy?
this was a trip
George Ephrem --- Probably MREs for Muppets.
North Korea they give you a dog on a cheese string leash. Korean hot dog an cheese.
omg stop with the dog jokes. its annoying
I'm very new to Emmy videos but, like everyone else, find them excellent to watch.
I think a big reason is that the editing completely matches her speaking style. There are hundreds of edits!
I love the Hartkekse with Tea. My friends family works for the military so she always has those at home 😌😍
why do I love her so much?
Oh!
Because she doesn't use the overused UA-cam music, and her videos are satisfying and relaxing to watch, I love you emmy your videos are awesome
Lately I've had some really bad anxiety and watching your vids calms me down so much.
Yaaay! I am currently working on final projects for college and this was the perfect break! Absolutely lovely as always!
During my time a a conscript we used to call these biscuits "Panzerplatten" (armor plates) because they are that hard.
The first stew "Bauerntopf" could be translated as "farmer's stew". It contains all kinds of regional veggies.
The second one "Schweinefleisch mit grünen Bohnen und Kartoffeln" means "pork with green beans and potatoes".
new camera???? it looks great!! :D
+Michael Rizzi No, just a new lens. Thanks for noticing!
Emmy, why aren't you on national TV? You are WONDERFUL! You can't help but smile after watching one of your videos.
Nice haircut! You're totally rockin it!
Slasher her hair is just in pig tails 🐷
she just pinned her hair back lol
I find your videos very relaxing, you present them in a very calm and warm way. I like to watch them before bed :)
Love the video.
You should make a MRE/24hr ration TASTE TEST playlist on your channel. Just a suggestion.
thanks.
I have one: ua-cam.com/video/qz6BRSNXGtY/v-deo.html
Why do I find these so fascinating? I only found your channel last night and watched a few of these and your prison cooking
I don't understand how people like Grapefruit juice? It tastes like tonic water.
tonic water is delicious with gin, likewise with grapefruit juice... the key being gin XD
I love grapefruit juice.
I love pink and yellow grapefruits(and citrus fruits in general). No need to juice it. =D
YAY! The MRE and ration videos are my favorite even tho I love ALL your videos, I was so excited to see this pop up in my notifications! I've been going through a really rough patch and you, Omocha Crush, and Mind of a Chef are the only things keeping me sane. Thanks so much for making them!
wait you never saw wooden matches? what are they made of in the us?
match books are usually cardboard here in the US. You can buy boxes of the wooden ones though
I think she meant that she has never seen wooden matches in a MRE meal.
Ritosha I never seen them too it is made of Card Board and sometimes it breaks easily by that I mean gets flimsy
That's so crazy. I didn't know matches came in other material than wood! :D
Wooden matches here in us are a novelty type of item expensive. I've seen them as long for fireplace.
Many Thanks...Emmy..very detail commentary...Cheers...❤❤❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
So, the Johannisbeere jam was currant :) and I love watching your ration pack vids :)
This is one of my favorite series! Can't wait to see what else you taste!!!
Emmy is too adorable she seems so innocent and pure I want to pinch her
Yey! I don't know why I enjoy these kind of videos but militaryfood really reflects the culture. Like to make them feel like everything is normal when they're out at the field :)
I don't know if anyone has said this but the coffee was meant to be divided between two cups :)
Blubb that makes so much sense thanks for sharing
Blubb Yes, and the tea was actually for 3 cups!
Thank you so much for posting these videos :) they are a welcomed break from studying for exams.
Hi Emmy I was wondering can you make Udon Noodle soup
You made it in your kids video and I always wanted to know how to make it
I think it is delicious and would love to learn how to make it, please
You are my favorite youtuber by the way
the first one is bierwurst wich is porksausage made with beer, the second is schmalzfleisch is pork with extra porkfat, the first stew bauerntopf is pork and potatoes, the second stew is also pork with beans and potatoes. the black jam is currant jam
Wait what? Cardboard matches?!
Yup in the USA there are cardboard marches
I love Ration Pack Taste Test. Love your videos!!!
Feleciapink22 ew
From her about page: "I thankfully do not have any food allergies"
Gabriel B Thanks Gabriel!
I read somewhere most asians are lactose intolerant, I cant remember the exact reason but it is genetic. Pretty interesting.
u have to use about the double amount of water for coffe/tea or the grapefruit stuff, a german military "cup" wich every soldier carries in his backpack has about 3 times the wateramount than a normal coffee cup
What kettle do you use? Currently deciding between either a simple just-boil-water kettle or a more exacting yes-I-would-like-to-not-scorch-my-green-tea system. Halp!
oneroarmouse How are you making your tea?
It's a Cuisinart. It's not cheap, but we use it everyday and it's changed our tea making game now that we can get the water at the correct temperature.
When I am stressing, I watch your videos. You have such a soothing voice and sweet spirit.
Johannesbeer is black currant jelly.
edit: Snort!
Loving the quality of this video 👏🏻👍🏻
Forgive me for my ignorance but what is coffee whitener?
Non-dairy creamer.
She literally translated Kaffeeweißer. It's illegal to use misleading labeling in Germany, so you can't include a word like "cream" in a creamer that isn't actually dairy. Similarly, rice, coconut, and almond milk are labeled as rice, coconut, or almond "drink".
After seeing an american army guy being confused by whole-wheat bread it's refreshing to see someone so informed and intelligent trying army rations!
Watching this one while waiting for dinner to finish cooking. Big mistake. 😓
love when you do MREs .... i def look forward to them 😀
Looks like a snort of schnapps might help wash that soft stew down. Enjoy watching you try different rations.
For sure.
Thank you Emmy for your video's. You have a lovely personality that brings sunshine into a person's life when they are feeling down like me.
Please people pray for my family and I! We might be homeless before Christmas!
No hot sauce in the stews? That's shocking!
this is my favorite youtube channel she makes really good videos
