So you really have to know where you get your water from because those tablets won't protect you from poisonous run off and chemically polluted water.

      LeniInChains ha yeah, they caused our pine trees to die from tree rust, a bad thing native to Europe. Trees there built an immunity to the rust and when black currants were introduced to the states, it brought the disease with them. Wiped out whole Forests of lumbar trees that were important at the time for building and stuff. So simple solution, ban black currant. It's not even a flavor of things in the states as it never caught back on after the taste was lost.

    Schmalz is the fat that stays in the pan when you cook pork-belly in the oven for example. If you pour it from the baking pan into a dish and let it sit it´ll turn white and set. It´s super flavorful and salty if you make your own and it´s a savory bread-spread.
    Schweinefleisch is pork :)

      By default "Schmalz" without any prefix refers to pork lard in German, which may also be labled "Schweineschmalz". If it was from another animal, you would prefix it, i.e. "Gänseschmalz" for goose fat or "Entenschmalz" for duck fat. For chicken fat you would rather say "Hühnerfett" than Hühnerschmalz and for beef fat you would use the term "Rindertalg" (Rind -> beef, Talg -> other word for animal fat).

    2:53 - i had to pause the video when you held up the coffee extract to read the packaging.. it says its for 2 cups of coffee. i bet the same goes for the tea.. so no wonder if you thought it was strong af ;)
    edit: i had to check and it even says 3 cups ( 2:00 ) xD .. still wondering why you didnt thought the coffee was strong as hell too ^^

    • @Sleeper001
      @Sleeper001 8 років тому +9

      3 cups was the tea, 2 cups the coffee. So if she didn't think the coffee was too strong she either likes her tea and coffee rather strong or the BW stretches those numbers quite a bit.

    • @crappiefisher1331

    Whoa, thats really old ration.
    The new ones have different biscuits (more like normal tea biscuits, not that hard), another type of spread instead of the margarine, and some dried stuff like Muesli (with milk powder) and desserts like a straciatella-mousse or an lemon-creme (somehow like lemon courd I believe) also as powder (so just add water, give it a stir and let it set for a few moments).
    In addition, the meat-spread comes in a different container (more like the jam containers, just a little bit bigger).
    And the treats (the chocolate and the chewing gum) are "modern". You get a fully vacuum-paked bar of chocolate and a re-sealable bag with 10-12 chewing gum dragees. The they taste like they are supposed to be for aximum 5 minutes xD
    Also you can find the british cereal-bar in the MRE.
    Sometimes you get Tuna in light majo aswell.
    There is also an "EPa Leicht" (EPa light) It's not an 79 cent version (lets keep this serious ;) ). it contains mostly freeze-dried meals in bags.
    Overall, the EPa has a more colorful apperance today.
    I like it when we get it in service :)
    Grettings from Germany!
    Horrido!

      EPa bekommt man allerdings nur relativ selten zu Gesicht. Meistens bekommt man dann doch "richtiges" Essen raus geliefert :)
      (Gerade in der AGA maximal im Biwak (wenn überhaupt eins stattfindet))
      Aber wenn; dann ist es echt nicht verkehrt :)
      Die Warmgerichte gehen zunot kalt, kekse gehen immer und wenn man Zeit (und langeweile) hat, bastelt man sich mit Keksen, Schokolade, Milchpulver und Kaffeeextrakt (oder Cappucinopulver (kein scheiß, ist echt drinn xD )) nen EPa-Kuchen :)
      Hat dann schon fast Festivalatmosphäre :))
      Viel Erfolg dann mit deiner Bewerbung! :)

      I had to rewind to check WHAT made the noise. :-D

    Just commenting because I know UA-cam likes that sort of thing these days and I love your videos!!! I feel like your content is so refreshing compared to most of the videos I find on UA-cam. I think it's so interesting to see you try all of these interesting foods and seeing how they compare to the food I'm used to. And you're so sweet and very good and staying on topic and still being really entertaining just because your such a sweet person and!! Keep on doing that because it's lovely and come on guys this video deserves more views that it has
    (I meant for this comment to be a single sentence I'm sorry))

    Ok so I just wanted to say first great job. Second idk if Steve1989 might have told you but that ration looks to have been from 1992. You are a brave reviewer to have tried that ration. Hope everything was ok after those are not really meant to hold up for a long time like the US mres. It must have been very well stored over the past 24 years or so. I'm not 100% but I think I saw 1992 on one of the gold containers. Anyways Happy Holidays.

    • @emmymade
      @emmymade  8 років тому +81

      Oh, man..I wish I still had the containers to confirm the date. Sheesh, rations are designed to last. Happy Holidays!

    • @Oldsmokey1
      @Oldsmokey1 8 років тому +19

      Well it sounds like you were ok after. I really can't believe that thing was still edible. You can see the dates on the top of the tins. I'm almost positive that it said 1992. Yea definitely those EPAs are not meant to last very long. I do know a guy in Germany who has eaten one from 99. In this case he bought them brand new and stored them very very well. Loved watching it was a great video.

    • @baatschanga
      @baatschanga 8 років тому +38

      Yup, the containers say 1992 or even 1982 (not sure). Just googled it and German rations are supposed to hold up to at least 10 years. As long as everything smelled and tasted okay, you should be fine.
      It explains the really hard chocolate and gums though.

    The 2nd meal you had " Schweinefleisch mit grünen Bohnen und Kartoffeln" is "Pork with green beans and patatos". "Bauerneintopf" is a mix of vegis and meat. In my region we use some wieners for that, but other regions take pork or beef. One jam was strawberry and the othere one was currant :).

    Emmy in your German 24 hour taste test video. you were tasting what was label as Johannisbeer schwarz
    that you did not know what it was.it is know as blackurrant black or as black currant ( Ribes nigrum)
    it is a fruit that is particularly rich in vitamin c and polyphenol phytochemicals. blackcurrants can be eaten raw, but are usually cooked in a variety of sweet or savoury dishes. they are use to make jams, jellies, and syrups. if you wany to know more, just google blackurrant. Love your videos.

    those drinks are meant for canteen cups not a civilian household cups!! a canteen cup is 24ozs.!!!the German's still issue utensil sets, i'm not sure about mess kits though!!! one thing though, it's not wise to use water purifier's in clean water, it could be dangerous depending on what's in them!!!!!

    • @RisWish
      @RisWish 8 років тому +14

      No, Emmy actually prepared the drinks according to the directions on the bag. I doubt that the German military issued cups are the same as the US ones. Especially because we use ml and l in Europe, not oz.

      Leyla Dawn no the latest issue is about the same as U.S. if not the same! I think your confusing the current one with the East German canteen cup which is smaller about 4ozs.and strapped over the canteen! all NATO issue is within 2ozs. of the same size if the cup fits under the canteen!!my info is about 2 yrs. old though!

      Nothing in Germany is in ounces.
