    For the non-Greeks, the packaging reads, in Greek: "green beans [in oil]," "beef with peas" and "beef with dried beans."
    All of these are what we call "λαδερά" in Greek, the word I haphazardly translate as [in oil], which involves stewing vegetables, often with meat, in a sauce that is primarily made out of olive oil and water, plus fresh tomatoes (or paste in the industry), onions and some additional stuff for flavour. They all have this notably orange colour to them from stewing fresh tomato in oil.

    Emmy, the green bean stew is a traditional Greek dish called fasolakia. The green beans are supposed to be soft, although of course the homemade freshly-cooked version is much tastier than the canned one. This is served as a main dish, although it often also contains pieces of potato, and, if cooked during a non-fasting period, may also contain pieces of meat. Just to put some perspective on the crunchy vs soft green beans issue, the first time I tried crunchy green beans I was taken by surprise, although now I have grown to appreciate them. To a Greek, crunchy green beans would seem undercooked, since we traditionally cook them until soft.

      Cool! We also have this dish in Turkey. We have two versions; vegetarian, which is cooked with olive oil, and it is usually eaten cold. As well as the meat version, usually made with minced meat, and we can add potatoes too. I was wondering; do eat the green beans (without meat) cold too? I was kind of dying inside when Emmy heat it up :D

    Yes all three cans contain food that is actually "traditional" in Greek cuisine. And yes all the meat is beef. You can buy these specific cans in supermarkets. Not expensive at all. Quality wise this company is one of the biggest in Greece. (now the army has to request portable feta rations to go with all these meals 😜)

      All military M.R.E's should be relatively simple yet filling. Each member out and about is burning calories like crazy and needs good, solid fuel. Somewhat bland and hot will fill the bill for most. When you're out in the rain and mud, wich the Mediterranean region has plenty of you want simple, hot, and quick food to fill that hole inside of you.

    In Europe, those are actually considered tissues to blow your nose, not napkins (when I first visited the US I was very confused by the flimsy thin and small tissues you had there too).
    Packets just like that have been the standard form to sell and buy tissues here for a long time (of course you buy them in bulk - around 20-30 such packets per package) - easy to carry around with you in a pocket or purse and resealable as you pointed out.
    In recent years, boxes of tissues have become more popular too for use in homes, but that's a comparably new development.

  • @peosforos13
    @peosforos13 3 роки тому +20

    For my military service I volunteered for the Greek Special Forces and the box with everything inside is quite accurate. Our unit had stocked up all these items, but due to economic reasons whenever we had training hours (or days) outside the unit, we were advised to go buy these stuff at the local supermarkets, they were not given to us except the unlabeled meat can which was horrible and no one wanted. We called that Godzilla because the meat was probably from the age of the dinosaurs. All the rest of the canned material is typical Greek canned food for holiday campers, very easy to find, there are also more tasty options like laxanontolmades or tomato meatballs all under the same brand. The crackers were also given for breakfast. Generally the Special Forces diet was very well balanced, with generous portions, only thing to be afraid of was bad chefs.

    • @LymanPhillips
      @LymanPhillips Рік тому +2

      @@LymanPhillips The concept of breakfast in time of war is I would say, non existent. Remember, this is a 24h indicative survival ration kit. To address your question, a typical special forces breakfast included coffee, tea, milk with cerial, bread with butter, jams, honey, nutella to choose from and in the weekends occasionally pancakes. Rarely you would find also omellete.

  • @palimpalim5291
    @palimpalim5291 6 років тому +96

    No, Emmy, the green beans are not overcooked as part of the canning process. In the Greek cuisine vegetables are indeed cooked until very, very tender. The very opposite of the Asian approach to cooking vegetables.
    Another effect of slowly cooking for a very long time is that the aromas of the herbs and spices used (olive oil, lemon, garlic, onion and fresh as well as dried Mediterranean herbs) are completely absorbed by the product - meat, vegetables, noodles, rice, whatever.
    However, we like them this way and fact is that they are much easier to digest this way. On the downside of course most of the non heat resistant vitamins are annihilated.
    In the Greek diet that is not a problem however, because it includes lots of fresh vegetables in divers forms of salad as well as fresh fruit as dessert.

    • @kristinwright6632
      @kristinwright6632 5 років тому +8

      I didn't know about the Greek style of cooking green beans but I knew that just canning green beans would not make them that soft. In the American South we have a green bean dish that is slow cooked with tomatoes, onions and sometimes bacon and it is just called southern-style. As a westerner I was horrified when I first heard about them but then I tried them. Yummy! I had suspected this was a similar dish.

    Put some hamhock (or bacon or ham) in the pot, water canned green beans (we do 4 cans) and a bunch of tiny potatoes(or 1 can of potatoes if you don't have fresh ones)
    Bunch of salt and pepper and cook it for several hours, like 4-5 hours (don't let the water all boil out, refill with more water if needed...but if you do add little bit more salt if it tastes watery)

    I have found that if you need to use a chlorine type water purifier, if you can leave the water open overnight, most of the chlorine will evaporate by morning, and be much more palatable. I realize in many situations this wouldn't be possible, but it's a nice thing to know if you're able to do it.
    Sometimes our local county water is extra-chlorinated, I often fill a wide-mouth gallon jug, and put a thin cloth over the top to keep bugs and dust out. (I buy cheap nylon knee-high stockings to keep on hand for this type of thing, they stretch nicely over the opening and don't need a rubber band) The water is so much better the next day.

    When I joined Greek Special Forces I was enlisted in paratroopers so an elite unit like that had probably much better food than other units .. So first time I saw the MRE I said “Boy I don’t even touch it “ but after all that in a training session lasted 1,5 week only with combat equipment I didn’t only ate that MRE but I also loved it 😂😂😂😂

    Oh my god the memories... had a lot of those back in my SF days in Greece.
    They also used to contain a sachet of dried milk (flakes) but they removed them because snakes on rock islands and mountains were drawn to the milk scent at night when we were sleeping, eventually curling in the warm sleeping bag (non poisonous!)
    A difference I noticed is that the biscuits ("galeta" they are called) were 4 and quite big (rather than a pack of 6 smaller ones) and the pack also contained a tin of processed cheese.

    Oh man now i want fasolakia. The green beans are meant to be cooked until soft. A really tasty meal with soft bread to dip in the oily stew. Highly recommend trying a home cooked version instead of a tin. As you say, the acidity from the tomato and that little bit of onion, usually with some potatoes, makes it delish

    Congratulations Emmy for yet another great video. Very good presentation.
    Since I have eaten both Greek and American MREs, and tried some other NATO during joined exercises, I can assure you that the Greek MREs are not only very delicious, but also much healthier than most others. All meals are Real UNPROCESSED food, not some preserved mixture warmed up in a plastic bag with same taste. Just a tip, we crack open the lid a little for warming. The company ZANAE makes exactly those meals for the civilian market, and everyone can get those same foods in a supermarket. I can even find them in international food supermarkets here in the USA.
    Now, IF they could package a fresh Greek village salad with feta cheese, and a souvlaki hot off the grill, it would be the most delicious food, but I guess these both can be enjoyed only fresh.
