Hello, I'm Ukrainian who also speaks Russian. And this is what was in those gold containers: At 9:50 eggplant caviar (spread). At 11:08 rice porridge with meat. At 12:15 stewed beef (real good if you mix it with any pasta). At 13:18 sauteed vegetables.
According to some guys I know who were military & ate these, making beverage from jam isn't unusual. The guys eating these things have lots of "hacks" for them.
Mesmer ASMR It works really well for some things and better for certain languages. In Japan it was really helpful for reading signs and menus. Not so great with full sentences or reading manga.
HI Emmy! I have an old hard-time family recipe that is extremely simple if you want it for that series! It's name is "Agolette" (Ah-johl-et) The recipe here is for one. You need pieces of Stale Italian Bread or French Baugette (all my great-grandparents were able to afford at the time) One half of a yellow onion One egg Preparation is simple: Boil a pot of water with chopped up onion. salt is optional. Once at a rapid boil, Crack your egg into the water. Wait until the egg is poached to a soft or medium texture. Turn off the water. Pour Take out the egg, and place on top of the stale bread. using a soup ladle, pour the onions on top of the stale bread, softening it and creating a tasty onion broth. you can put black pepper on top to taste.
S-0 Is your family Northern Italian? My grandparents were from Tuscany and Marche and we make something very similar. The bianco (white) version as you do (sometimes with a little grated Parmesan cheese) and another version with leftover tomato sauce diluted with water. The stale bread is added and allowed to soften up and sop up the sauce. Sometimes spinach or swiss chard is added with some grated cheese. We call this pane cott' -Cooked bread.
S-0 maybe Emmy could make an entire episode with recipes that use stale bread? There's a lot. I'm Dutch and my family used to make bread porridge using stale bread, sugar and milk (you can add anise powder/seed if you have it). Edit: I have a recipe book from my region of the Netherlands with three different porridge recipes that I could easily translate (one uses normal bread, and two others call for more specific bread that might not be easy to find in the US)
The outer packaging may have been in Ukrainian dialect, but the contents were almost certainly in formal Russian. I suspect that ration was meant for some of their southern brigades. The puree is known as "vegetable caviar" and can be used as you did or made into a mug of soup. The much prized apple butter is often just squeezed directly into the mouth. The kasha starch was probably pearl barley. Finally, as you learned, the fuel tabs have a very unpleasant smell when they burn. Great job, Our Lovely!
Hi, I speak both Ukrainian and Russian. They use different Cyrillic alphabets. By that fact its obvious that the whole thing is in Russian. I don't really know what you mean by "Ukrainian dialect," Ukrainian is a different langauge (acutally much more simlar to Polish than Russian). Finally, Google isn't great at translating either Russian or Ukrainian into English, which is why it probably thought the ration was in Ukrainian.
Quick Russian lesson for food: *сахар белый (sakhar belii) is sugar, white *перец (perets) is pepper. болгарский перец (bolgarskii perets) is literally Bulgarian pepper, which is the Russian name for capsicum or bell pepper *соль (sol) is salt. *сыр (seer) is cheese *яблоко (yabloko) is apples, but nouns change form for case and so on in Russian *икра (ikra) is literally caviar, but refers to pureéd vegetables like zucchini/courgette *каша рисовая (kasha risovya) rice porridge. Also made with buckwheat, wheat, or pearl barley. Fatty meat with the grain and lightly spiced. *говядина тушеная (govyadina tusheniya) is beef stew. Colloquially called "tushenka". первый класс (pervii klass) means first class/premium quality *рагу (ragu) is ragou *паштет печеночный (pashtyet pechtenochnii) is paté made from liver. In all likelihood, this will be pork with other bits of the pig like heart and brains as well as the liver. p.s. Your Uncle Gweilo can't speak Russian. Just picked up stuff from watching dozens of Russian language cooking videos.
If you don't see a letter that looks like "i", the text is in Russian, not Ukrainian. Easy way for someone who does't have much familiarity with the language to spot the difference!
I second this tip. I speak neither Ukrainian nor Russian, but I do have working knowledge of the Cyrillic alphabet. Ukrainian has a letter that looks like the Latin I, and the usual Russian equivalent looks like a backwards Latin N. Both letters make the sound of the I in "machine." Ukrainian uses the backwards N character for a sound that Russian represents with a letter that looks like a lowercase b joined to a lowercase l.
I’ve had morning sickness for the last couple of weeks so every type of food sounds and looks disgusting but the way you describe what you’re eating just makes me absolutely salivate.
Emmy, I just wanted to re-ask you to please look into making Spaghetti Pot Pies. They were huge in the 50s-70s with kids. I always chose those over chicken, turkey and beef. You can't find them anymore (at least online). Just a request, and hoping you might notice it this time and consider trying it out. Thanks so much! (it contained a thick meaty sauce with spaghetti pasta in a normal pot pie crust, so good!)
The spread you were eating is pashtet. Pâté is a mixture of cooked ground meat and fat minced into a spreadable paste. Common additions include vegetables, herbs, spices, and either wine or brandy (often cognac or armagnac).
Omg I just came across your channel once again I used to watch you a couple years ago and LOVE that you still are posting, you are such a breath of fresh air!!

And so do you Emmy, you freaking rock girl and I love your videos and your channel. Love your positive attitude cuz it's extremely contagious. hi Emmy! love all your videos. just wantet to say the second can is something like spam in U.S. russians usually dont heat it up, but you seemed to enjoy it as a soup. the thing with potatos was a ragout. the patet was with liver an butter. what your phone translated as SAMAR ist sugar but in russian it's pronounced sahar. anyway great video again. thanks :) Greetings from Germany

Who doesn't like some owl dish. :D But you're safe, no owls there, it said rice kasha on the label. As to that baby food one, it said eggplant caviar, I don't know if it's popular dish in the US, it has nothing to do with real caviar, but when you prepare it properly (it shouldn't be that baby-food-ish) it looks a bit like a caviar, because of eggplant's seeds. That cheese was cheese indeed, processed cheese. Stew was beef stew and the last one of the heated meals was ragout, and pate was with butter. Anyway, strange Google Translate didn't translated it from Russian, since it's most certainly Russian. Great video. :D
I am SO enjoying this channel! What a unique and entertaining concept- keep up the awesome job! lol it is like a history lesson, food critique with a nice compassionate perspective!
Yours are probably the only videos that I watch completely until they stop because there is always some sort of little out-take, even if it's just you making a funny face. Thanks!
Hi Miss Emmy! What you have here is a Russian ration known as an "IRP" also known as a "ИРП" "Индивидуальный рацион питания" meaning essentially a individual food ration. This is a 24 hour ration. Other Russian "MREs" that you see are "ОРП" or "одноразовые рацион питания" which is an "ORP" and is translated loosely as a one-time use ration, they are a one meal ration as opposed to the 24-hour ration. Hope this helps.
i love these mre vids! and just a tip for google translate, if you take a picture and have it on your camera roll before hand, go on the app and click the photo icon on google translate and select the words you want to translate- it worlds a lot better than the camera scanning :)
Alessandra Bozzelli First of all, that's a really awful thing to ask to someone who's clearly an awesome momma taking care of her kids. Second, there are many reasons why that could happen. Accidental pregnancies, along with not believing in or wanting abortion. Sometimes, people just have patches of hard times. Lost jobs, unemployment, the loss of a person who is contributing to the family's income. There are a ton of reasons someone may have children and money problems. But those reasons are none of your business.
Never see negative comments on your videos! Such a positive vibe you give off! I’ve been a subscriber for 2 Years now and to this day, have no regrets! You’re amazing! Peace.
Brute Better *tries not to barf after i ate a russian irp* *huhhhhhhhhhh (sound of me barfing), comes back to the phone, continues scrolling through comments and watching the video and hopes what i just read amd threw up to is not true*
Emmy could you try a universal yum box it’s $14 or more depending on the box you get but it’s snacks you get from around the world each month I love to watch you try different things and well these boxes are very different from the u.s. lol
Kim Coffman yes they are I love to get a box every month just too try it the box this month was super DIFFERENT. It’s from Taiwan 🇹🇼 and if you get one from there don’t eat the plum candy lol
The drak fruit bars in ration packs are full of fibre and sometimes some laxative to keep you regular even while you're eating all the very rich condensed food that ration packs are full of. We alsoways got told "If you eat nothing else, eat the fruit bar"
I wonder if the tomato 'stuff' was a soup base? It resembled concentrated tinned tomato soup and meant to be diluted a touch and drank/eaten. Further on in the video you probably could have combined the potato tin stuff for a veg soup. Fascinating
It`s an eggplant puree/paste, trust me. Though I guess you can indeed make some kind of a nice soup out of it. Say, by mixing it with hot water and stewed beef.
Great video. As as fellow canner, I'm with you. Make any canned food a few times and you start to appriciate all those colorful jars in your grandma's pantry and basement. ☺
Being raised by a Filipino mom, a great treat she would make for me was this avocado dessert. Idk if it has a specific name, but to make it mash 2 avocados, add 1 can of sweetened condensed milk, crushed ice, and mix it together. It would mean the WORLD to me if you made this avocado treat in one of you videos!
Marshmallow yes Emmy, make this. I’ve heard of it before, and as a Mexican I’m very curious in the use of avocado in this dessert. Would love to see it.
One piece of advice from this Ol' Marine is that when you hear up a metallic container w/food on an "esbit stove" to either "crack open" and/or open completely open your lid so that heat can escape so no explosions & also you can "stir" your ration portion.
I recently discovered your channel, and I just have to say you are so lovely. You always brighten my day! Love your detailed reviews, it’s so different from other people on UA-cam. Keep it up!
Hi Emmy! I saw someone steam the normal ration pack breads over the boiling water used to heat the main meals...it ended up being much fluffier...you should give it a go ☺
They look so much better than US MREs, cos for one, they actually use food, not a series of chemicals made up to resemble something that could be mistaken as food... :P
twocvbloke you aren’t wrong, my man. After about a day of eating US MRE’s they all start to taste the same. Doing joint stuff with partner nations has really started to make me realize that Natick just wants us to eat dog food.
I've tried 4 different US MREs so far (two of which I showed on my Rotten Shed channel), and you're right, they tend to taste "the same", and not good quality. Even British ration packs are filling up with the same US MRE stuff, and that is just awful!! Compare that to Lithuanian MREs though (the only other ration I've tried), it's night and day, the Lithuanian ones taste like food, still looks like dog food, but the flavours are so much nicer!!
Angelo Frisone Sometimes it can be tricky because for example Canadian rations have a lot of "made in US" packaging or foods. So since Belarus and Ukraine neighbor Russia -- that is always a possibility. But yeah it is for sure Russian
ReptileMan 0912 very true. Also a lot of Slavic languages are very similar but also very different. So can make for a very confusing translation experience. Is one of the reasons why I cross reference Google Translate with some of the textbooks I have. Also the word Federation was mentioned which makes me think it was Russian however I don't know the date the MRE was made maybe it was manufactured during the time of the CIS? Who knows?
ReptileMan 0912 also please correct me if I'm wrong but it seems from the research I got Ukraine was part of the Confederacy of independent states at one time so anything with this MRE is a possibility.
Half the stuff in an Australian CR1M is made in New Zealand, so that my not necessarily be the case. The best thing, apart from looking for a specific Ukrainian reference, will be to search the text for Cyrillic characters that were developed for Ukrainian that don't exist in Russian.
Emmy, Your ability to describe what you are seeing, smelling and tasting is amazing. Did you have any special training in the field? You are also very brave to put half of that stuff into your mouth and try to eat it.....
I have noticed watching the 6 or so mre channels I watch that many of the other countries, mainly northern, Russia, canada, Ukraine Poland etc, all seem to be fatty meat heavy. A lot more food and seem to be healthier than our mre. Also on the sugar i wonder if it's beet sugar ?
A lot of European rations also seem to have pate in it too. But yeah, like Emmy said it was definitely the kind of fatty food that you need for a cold climate.
I think those smelled more of baby wipes which usually aren’t as perfumed. I do love when Emmy says that the lemon scented wipes remind her of when her mom would take care to KFC as a little girl cause I have the same memories :)
What I like is this vid came out on my brothers surprise birthday party and we had it at a military home! I saw an MRE in there and immediately thought of you! And funny enough you post an MRE video on that day!
hey emmy i love your videos and have been watching for a while! i have a suggestion: I would love if you could put in a picture or small clip of the item or section of one of your own/other people's videos whenever you refer to them e.g. when something resembles something you've seen before. I get curious and sometimes I do go outwardly look for it or have already watched the clip so vaguely remember it but it helps if its all in once place. Thanks for these relaxing videos ! Because of you I always say "Itadakimasu" before I eat lol its become a habit
Your MRE videos are my favourite and I’ve happily watched every single one you’ve ever made. I’m hoping to order my own very very soon with my birthday money 😄
The Russians I knew, 10 years ago would probably say the jams were in the same category as candy. My boyfriend, when I told him I wanted “something sweet,” (me - meaning ice cream or cake) he brought me a jar of raspberry jam. Voila! “Something sweet!”

HI Emmy!
I have an old hard-time family recipe that is extremely simple if you want it for that series!
It's name is "Agolette" (Ah-johl-et) The recipe here is for one.
You need pieces of Stale Italian Bread or French Baugette (all my great-grandparents were able to afford at the time)
One half of a yellow onion
One egg
Preparation is simple:
Boil a pot of water with chopped up onion. salt is optional.
Oso Canin my great grandmother is of Northern Italian descent, actually! Those versions sound delicious! I will need to try them some time!
That sounds yummy :)
S-0 maybe Emmy could make an entire episode with recipes that use stale bread? There's a lot. I'm Dutch and my family used to make bread porridge using stale bread, sugar and milk (you can add anise powder/seed if you have it).

As someone who has gone without food just so my kids can eat, all of that food looks delicious!! I would love those rations.
April Manint you’re a great mom
April I completely understand.
I feel like being rude and asking why have kids if you don't have money? Sorry just makes sense to me...
Alessandra Bozzelli yikes that’s extremely rude. Mind your business honey :)
Peace.
In Russia, fuel tabs made from fish urine
Brute Better *tries not to barf after i ate a russian irp*
*huhhhhhhhhhh (sound of me barfing), comes back to the phone, continues scrolling through comments and watching the video and hopes what i just read amd threw up to is not true*
When she said “horny council” I spat out my coffee 🤣
Emmy could you try a universal yum box it’s $14 or more depending on the box you get but it’s snacks you get from around the world each month I love to watch you try different things and well these boxes are very different from the u.s. lol
Hannah Cox my dad did those! They’re awesome, aren’t they?
Kim Coffman yes they are I love to get a box every month just too try it the box this month was super DIFFERENT. It’s from Taiwan 🇹🇼 and if you get one from there don’t eat the plum candy lol
I love your descriptions of odors and tastes.
"We know it's from somewhere!" Always a good sign.
Hello 👋 how are you doing
"Lemon - scented wet naps rule."
How do they taste?
Thanks Emmy for making this video ! Love your channel !
Great video. As as fellow canner, I'm with you. Make any canned food a few times and you start to appriciate all those colorful jars in your grandma's pantry and basement. ☺
Yeah I recently started canning meat and it’s great!
So excited! It's been so long since a ration tasting. I love these.
I saw a video recently where somebody made this--I think it was Emmy, actually.
Keep it up!
She is one of the few that always has positive comments. And she keeps bees and chickens 😀💛
Hi Emmy! I saw someone steam the normal ration pack breads over the boiling water used to heat the main meals...it ended up being much fluffier...you should give it a go ☺
Well, at least now we know what the council does in their free time?
Emmy, you look more and more beautiful every video, I swear!! I love your videos and you have the most soothing voice.
Compare that to Lithuanian MREs though (the only other ration I've tried), it's night and day, the Lithuanian ones taste like food, still looks like dog food, but the flavours are so much nicer!!
twocvbloke you need to make a conscious effort to try French rations, they are fine dining in austere conditions.
I've looked into getting some RCIRs, just need to justify the cost, as I'm on a limited income... :)
gentlegallon it’s not even the sugar, the meals are just shit.
I just ❤️ your videos!!!! Your so sweet and soft spoken
If I heard you Correctly It said Moscow Region. If so than It's Russian.
Angelo Frisone
Sometimes it can be tricky because for example Canadian rations have a lot of "made in US" packaging or foods.
UncleGweilo Ah That Is A good point .
I've actually never seen one of these military meals before...Thank you so much for sharing this!
You should connect w/ Crazy Russian Hacker if you haven't already; he would definitely know if this was Russian. Plus, he LOVE doing MRE videos, too!
I don’t know why I find these so interesting and nice to watch
That is in Russian. I do not know why your app didn't translate from Russian.
If the fonts are stylized...Google translator has an issue with them.
Michael Hernandez Ooooh. I see the font style now.
Ok. I see how it can cause problems... lol
Emmy, Your ability to describe what you are seeing, smelling and tasting is amazing. Did you have any special training in the field? You are also very brave to put half of that stuff into your mouth and try to eat it.....
Emmy, I find your use of cloth napkins very endearing as well as eco friendly. What, I inquire with all grace; caused you to use them?
@@crystaldawn2708 wtf
@@sandsand9403 🙃 Clearly the original comment has been edited chill
@@crystaldawn2708 Okay, you just seemed very aggressive
I love watching the MRE taste tests. Always fun and educational.

You are too kind Emme!!
I bet it is beet sugar. I live in Ukraine and none of our sugar is cane sugar. It might be similar in Russia.
Always entertaining Emmy!
Lemon-scented wet naps rule!
I think those smelled more of baby wipes which usually aren’t as perfumed. I do love when Emmy says that the lemon scented wipes remind her of when her mom would take care to KFC as a little girl cause I have the same memories :)
That's a lovely comment, but read the description all the way through, love.
What I like is this vid came out on my brothers surprise birthday party and we had it at a military home! I saw an MRE in there and immediately thought of you! And funny enough you post an MRE video on that day!
If it's full of pashtiyet and already been featured by Crazy Russian Hacker, it's Russian.
Callie Masters I was thinking the same thing when she first showed the box. It looked like one Crazy Russian Hacker had on his channel.
Callie Masters i Heard pashtiyet is páté
Stasiu Sobucki- you are correct
Yes done by Russian hacker but she is so much more descriptive and a more "real" review if you know what I mean, as much as I love his videos!
Man I wish you would fully show the print on the ration, as a native speaker it's always interesting to read what's written on them.
You sounded so excited when it translated Nubbin, I died laughing.
This is the second Russian MRE I've seen Emmy review, and in terms of quality and quantity of food, they are the best ones I've seen.
I have a recipe I want you to try to make on your channel. You will love it, I’ll have to email it to you sometime. Always a lovely video from you
hey emmy i love your videos and have been watching for a while! i have a suggestion: I would love if you could put in a picture or small clip of the item or section of one of your own/other people's videos whenever you refer to them e.g. when something resembles something you've seen before.
Happy early Birthday!
in Russia i believe there is a superstition that if you wish someone a happy birthday before their birthday its bad luck.
Glory to Russia same in Germany ;)
fjellyo32 just found out my notifications for comments turned off again, and then when i enabled it I immediately see your reply 17 seconds ago!
The Russians I knew, 10 years ago would probably say the jams were in the same category as candy.
My boyfriend, when I told him I wanted “something sweet,” (me - meaning ice cream or cake) he brought me a jar of raspberry jam.
Voila! “Something sweet!”
Love your MRE Videos! 😍❤
I just love your voice so much! And the ya you talk is amazing.
It says Moscow so must be Russian
Just found your site absolutely rocks. Real view of mre coooool.
Recently discovered your channel and I’ve been binge watching while recovering from having my gallbladder removed. I also discovered Steve1989! From one of your followers. His videos on MRE’s are fascinating.
I’ve also been loving your crazy retro recipes!
The tomatey thing you had was eggplant spread
caahap (pronounced saahar) is sugar, while cmap (saamar) is nuts
Strange question, where in the world did you get your silverware? The one with the empty space in the handles?
I've been wondering that as well.
I always notice them!
emmy is great and i love her mre videos.
I love Emmy. In particular, I love how she “mm-hm”s after taking a bite, like she’s agreeing with herself. 😂😍
Hello 👋 how are you doing
