Even a well established tolumnia will deteriorate when one of these factors happen. We cannot take an established tolumnia for granted and think that because it is established with many fans, it is strong enough to ward of any dangers. ONE will definitely be the result of a tolumnia to decline very quickly, but add 2 or 3 more to the mix and the tolumnia will not be able to recover. What to be aware of when growing tolumnia orchids. #orchids #orquideas #orchideen #plantas #howtocarefortolumnia #wetdry #selfwatering

HI Anna 😍💐 its good to see you again! I hope that you have been doing well? I am so glad that there was some intel in this video that gave you hope. Besides having so many tolumnias, loosing them is still tough. There are so many variables that we need to take into consideration when it comes to these orchids... considering that they should also be easy to grow. That can fool us to be too complacent. (note to self!) 😅 going to send you positive tolumnia growing vibes 🤗 thank YOU so much for watching and for your feedback 🌸

HI Diva 😍💐 I hope that this video was of help? I know that my tolumnias deal with things in cycles, and I am also starting to believe that, even if a tolumnia is growing great, without any of the things I mentioned today, that they end up having a life span, eventually just collapse. I am not ready to determine that as credible information, but I have a few that are growing well, but look as if they are dying and yet nothing was wrong with them to begin with. So... the investigation continues! Never a dull moment 🙄🤪 thank you so much for watching, Diva! I hope that your day is fabYOUlous already ❤️🌸

Hey Nina!! Really enjoyed the live. I wasn't aware that I could join the live convo... Maybe I'll work up the "courage" , if someone doesn't pull my lions tail!! 🤣. Since I cast my YT from my phone to my big screen, it takes a little finagling so as to do chat live I've found out from my other mods that I've done.
I've heard Tolumnias can be fussy, but Sylvestris was a royal Pain in the A**!!! 😁 But I've also heard that many of the new hybrids are much easier to work with, and yes I have heard Do Not Overfeed the Animals!! 😅 Plus mounting is the best way to grow them for my set up. I love yours!! 😍 My temps never drops below 65° max, but can get up to 85° during summers here. Thank You for this vid!! Very helpful... 🥳 Have yourself an awesome evening Nina, I will do my best to try and keep up with you Live or otherwise. VooDoo Ta Ta....

And here you are as well, 🦇😍💐 thank you! So much!! For your feedback, and for being there for me when the first stream went down. Please know that I have no expectations that you should make it to every live. I am just glad that you were ok with me modding you up. I can react with these low numbers, but not as fast as someone in chat. I hate the bots! 😡 I am still considering the possibility that tolumnias have a life cycle. No matter how well established the tolumnia is, eventually it will decline and that is that. I don't have any real credible proof to back my suspicions up, but as my collection does what it does, and behaves the way it does... never mind the scale and other things that I did wrong. I have had some superb tolumnias, just frazzle and that was it. No stressors, no rot, no pests, no dumb dumb that killed roots.... and they just went 'poof'!! 🤷🏼‍♀️ I shall keep observing and maybe one day have something definitive to say about what I am observing. 🤔 gots me some hot chocolate and then the tipple before.... bed! 🙌🏼 thank you, Robert, for everything! If I start listing things here, I will miss something... so, everything!! Thank you 🙏🏼 have a wonderful rest of your day ❤️🌸

Hi Nina, yes I had the scale problem this summer on my prize Tolumnia. She is a blue ribbon winner at one of our shows. She had two large blooms this past spring. Well, sadly she is down to one fan and struggling. That scale is nasty . I’m glad I had divided her several years ago and mounted the other which is fine. Sweet little orchids but can be tricky. Thanks for sharing.🤗👏❤️

Shirley 😍💐 hello, lovely lady! I am so glad to hear that you have a second piece of your blue ribbon winner! Wow! It would be such a shame to loose it, so having that back up, what a relief! Scale with tolumnias... I am cross with myself that I did not check the time frame and protect my tolumnias before it was too late. I have to remember to set alarms for these kinds of things the next growing season. I may loose 2, if not 3 more. Really appreciate you watching, Shirley! Thank you so much 🤗 I hope that you are having a beautiful day ❤️🌸

Scale is probably the single biggest threat to Tolumnia. I've never seen cold damage on a Tolumnia here, and we've had nights drop well below 12 for several nights in a row. It is the scale, and only the scale, that did mine in. I did really like the Jairak Firm 'Cider' but I won't die if I can't ever replace it. And since the main importer of Tolumnia in the US stopped bringing them in, they're not as readily available.

Don Miguel 🥰💐 hola jefe! Mine must be of a very sensitive nature, because anything below 15º and boom... anthocyanin and the first signs of shrivelling. They must be like me, because that is my lowest temps where I am still ok. Go any lower and my heart sinks. And we will be going lower starting Friday. So, the mass exodus of the patio will begin. 🥲 it rained most of the night, the deep south is getting a last good feel of what they should have all year round, but, alas.... glam camping will come to an end on Friday. I am preparing myself and hope that I can organize myself to also film some of it. Hope you woke up to a beautiful day. Yesterday, while trying to sleep, I went down the rabbit hole of the Dome House that were finally finished off by Ian. I suppose that now, they will serve as a natural reef. Interesting stuff. 😅 thank you so much for watching, Michael! ❤️🌸

Indeed a balancing act between watering and fertilising with regard to tolumnia growing Nina. Lot of pampering required when we grow these teeny tiny orchids just like we pampher a small child.Even exposure to rain for a couple of hours can lead to crown rot unlike other orchids.Never water from above is to be strictly observed while watering tolumnias .Happy Gardening Nina.

Soooo we have dachshunds ✅ orchids ✅✅ do you also have a crazy bird? Well, let me rephrase that... do you have a bird? 😅 Just because mine is a little nuts, does not mean that all birds are 😅 I grew up with dachshunds since I can remember. King is 2 years old, still learning the rope, but the dominant one in the zoo, that is for sure! South Texas is a beautiful climate for orchids, and, I am sure that you will enjoy the progress of your tolumnia... I like that you added the word 'first' because... once you have one, it is so hard not to get more of them. Wonderful to be waiting on new orchids 🥳🙌🏼👍🏼 really appreciate you watching this video, Lindsay, thank you! I hope you had a wonderful day and once again, welcome 🌸

🦒🌷💖 Maybe we should assume that all orchids have hidden scale waiting for the right moment to feast on our orchids because they seem to come out of nowhere, sometimes. I never had scale (yet 😬) on my 2 Tolumnias but I beleive I made the mistake of fertilizing too little. In short, flushing too frequently and very low fertilizer and supplements🙄 I mean, they grew very well and one of them even bloomed but the blooms had no lip in December blooming and in summer blooming only one flower had the large lip. As they are growing so well I assume they are not sick. I am already doing what you suggested here, I fertilize first and then, half an hour later, I flush to avoid root burn but still provide nutrients. Have yourself a lovely sunny day, all things going your way 😍😍😘😘

FFF 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🥰💐 good morning, meine liebe Freundin! You may be right! But, my hedge is loaded with them as well... I just discovered the start of crawlers on some rupicolous laelias and well, that is not happening 🙄 spent the morning treating them after it rained all night. I have emptied masks ... but it was good rain. 👍🏼 There is not much to do on the patio today except go around with a cup of coffee and make sure that no one is too wet. It is still warm enough for the deep south, and I am sure they enjoyed the down pour. Guess what I thought of when the rain woke me up during the night... 🔌⁉️ but we were still independant this morning. Thank you so much for watching, amiga mia! I figured out what I was doing wrong yesterday and am up and running 'over there'! 😆 Suddenly my brain unscrambled itself and it was all clear again. Hi Andrea 😍💐 These little orchids have their challenges, even though they would appear to be 'easy' to grow, but still... they are also so hybridised that they may be fine for a few years, and then fall apart even without any outside influence. My new plant is doing well. It is staying in bark until next year. Should everything go according to plan, I will not be repotting it. But she is doing well, and I am glad to hear that your's is adapting well as well 👍🏼👍🏼 that is great news! Had a lot of rain last night, and today was very cloudy. So... we are changing conditions, and with that, 2 more days and then they all come inside. Yay! a video about Tolumnias. I just try to soak up as much information as I can get because I’m determined to get at least one of my plants to bloom. I still wonder if it is going to happen in my lifetime. I finally decided to repot them into leca and move them out onto the patio where I’ve hung the three that are left into bright shade now that the sun is higher in the sky and there’s no risk of burning the leaves. The other two that are still very tiny have gone into ICU on sphagnum moss, enclosed and placed under grow lights which are not very strong. I’ve stopped looking at them too often and whatever happens to them now is just the way it is. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on Tolumnias Nina.

HI Renate 😍💐 they would appear to be easy to grow, but they come with so many challenges that even if one detail goes wrong, being so small, it just takes the orchid can't handle it. I am sure that you are going to see your's in bloom, Renate... they bloom relatively quickly compared to other orchids that we buy and then have to mature first. I hate seeing my tolumnias desiccate, Renate, so I fully understand where you are coming from. Even well established tolumnias in my collection are now looking shrivelled and I wonder if they are going to be around for any length of time. We shall see. Thank YOU for watching, Renate! So appreciate your time and your support. I hope that you had a lovely day ❤️🌸

Hi, Nina! Thank you for this very informative video! I have two Tolumnias. One has only bloomed once for me, even though it is growing fans like crazy. I wonder why.
The other one was a tiny, half dead two-fanned one I bought on-line (well, it was supposed to be young but fine). It arrived on a ball of dry moss mounted on a decaying bit of wood. I remounted it on a cork and it is recovering, slowly. It has grown a new little fan a some roots. We'll see if it makes it!🌸
My Tolumnias do not seem to mind the cold weather, but we rarely go below 5°C.
PS: My other Tolumnia is mounted on a thick twig, no moss or anything added and it is happy.

Hi Monica😍💐 thank YOU so much for taking time to watch this video and add your kind feedback, as well as, what works well for you when it comes to growing tolumnias! I appreciate the time and the information 🫶🏼 light levels are a balance with tolumnias, to get them to bloom. The leaves should have a blush of anthocyanin along the outer edges, just a blush, not all red like mine, or a spattering of freckles. This indicates that they get enough light. I was trying to simulate mounts with these baskets and just lava rock because it is easier to place them on a tray and carry them indoors during the winter months. The scale situation was the last straw for them. I am still struggling to this day, with 3 (one is ready to be thrown away but I can't get myself to do it) while 2 are so stressed that they are really pink from anthocyanin. In my recent live stream I showed them and talked about why I am hesitant to bring them inside for some less stressful conditions during the summer, because I have 2 more indoors that were gifted to me and I am just concerned that the scale crawlers I miss may make the leap to the ones that I have indoors. I really made a big mess out of my tolumnia collection 🥲 My winter temps indoors are 14ºC on the lowest. I do not leave my tolumnias outside during the winter. But it would appear that once they get to this stressed stage, 14ºC is too low as well, not allowing for recovery. 😤 If I can grow the 2 that were gifted to me, I will be ever so grateful 🙏🏼 Wishing you a great start to the new week, Monica!! Once again, thank you for your time watching and your comment 🫶🏼❤️🌸

Hi 😍💐 welcome! I have not seen you in the comments before, so I am going to take this opportunity to extend a warm welcome and say a big thank you for watching the video, commenting and being here, I so appreciate it 🫶🏼 scale and tolumnias!! Wow, I am sorry that you are asking this question because it would appear that you have that happening with your tolumnias? ua-cam.com/video/wUc41OqWohM/v-deo.html here is a video to the garlic infused alcohol I use for all my pest treatments as well as prevention. I use a paintbrush to apply this mixture to my tolumnias in the hopes that the scale will not return. I have only been marginally successful by doing this. Unfortunately, my conditions do not allow my tolumnias to recover and gather some strength before the next cold months arrive. So, once they are in a weakened state because of the scale, the recovery is almost impossible. I have already lost another 3 this season, even though I did not leave them out of my sight all summer. Still, this is the only way I know how to keep scale off tolumnias to begin with and keep treating once some appear. I hope that this helps out a little bit, preferably a LOT 🤞🏼 thank you so much for watching the video and once again, welcome 🫶🏼❤️🌸
