  • While it may seem easier to retreat or avoid challenges altogether, pushing through times of distress can yield significant benefits.
Resilience Building: When faced with adversity, pushing yourself encourages you to confront challenges head-on rather than avoid them. This process helps build resilience, which is the ability to bounce back from difficult situations stronger than before. Each time you push through distress, you strengthen your resilience muscle, making you better equipped to handle future challenges.
Personal Growth: Adversity often presents opportunities for personal growth and development. By pushing yourself during tough times, you can discover strengths and abilities you may not have realized you had. Overcoming obstacles can lead to increased self-confidence and a greater sense of accomplishment, fostering personal growth in various aspects of your life.
Emotional Regulation: Pushing yourself during distress can aid in developing emotional regulation skills. Instead of succumbing to negative emotions such as fear, anxiety, or despair, pushing through challenges can help you learn to manage these emotions more effectively. Over time, you become better equipped to regulate your emotions and maintain a more balanced perspective even in difficult situations.
Adaptability: Facing distress and pushing through it fosters adaptability. You learn to be flexible in your approach, adjusting to changing circumstances and finding innovative solutions to problems. This adaptability is a valuable skill in both personal and professional life, enabling you to navigate uncertainties and thrive in dynamic environments.
Resilience as a Coping Mechanism: Resilience serves as a coping mechanism during times of distress. By pushing yourself, you demonstrate to yourself that you have the ability to overcome challenges, which can instill a sense of hope and optimism.

Terrible advice imo. When you are in a state of distress you are not thinking soundly. To push in that state is a recipe for disaster: bad decisions, injury, etc, are prone to happen in this state. Every single bad thing that has ever happened to me has been due to pushing while in distress. I trusted the wrong person, got lifelong injury from Psych meds because of it, injured myself at the gym, trying to distract myself from the hurt. These are just a few examples from the past couple of years. But the trend is longer than that.
    Terrible advice.
