- Zack Wilson has now officially gone form the 2nd overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft, to a 3rd stringer...despite the fact that the starter Aaron Rodgers is out with injury. Instead of attacking Zack I decided to approach this video from a different perspective.

I think the biggest problem with these guys is that teams forgot that you build with the line first. If you can't block then you can't do anything.

Mahomes learned how to be an NFL QB from Alex Smith, his talent pushed him to the next level. It has been fun to watch, even as a Titans fan.
Not only that, he was drafted to the right team that had the weapons to test and challenge Patrick Mahomes's throwing ability.
He also got drafted by a hall of fame coach who always knows how to put togethere a defense and an offensive line

As a jets fan, this is the best take on the situation I have seen. Zach was doomed from the start, and was doomed when Rodgers went down.
I completely disagree as a Jets fan. The Jets gave Zach every chance to succeed. Sam Darnold was the one the Jets failed because the teams they had around him were terrible. Zach had much better teams around him than Darnold. Sometimes the QBs are just not good.
@NYJGreatness I don't disagree that darnold was given a worse stick. I would say that zach was failed in certain aspects. The "good team" they had was mostly on the defensive side of the ball. Also, they claimed he was supposed to red shirt this year and still made him the primary backup which made no sense. They probably didn't fail him as much with the talent as they did darnold but they failed him with the other things

Honestly Flem this is why the jets are always a failure. Our franchise never learns from mistakes and other franchises success. Young QBs take time to develop and need years to learn behind a veteran. The jets have never once in my life drafted a rookie and sat him for 2 years. Meanwhile it’s all GB does and it WORKS! So I feel for the guys we’ve drafted they’re screwed from day 1

Yeah cause you guys had Sam Darnold as well, who I thought was a good QB, he just didn't get to develop like the other QB's. Like I'm telling you right now if he was playing with the jets now I feel he would be better becuase he would figured it out after some time, plus the fact that the Jets have better weapons. But the real issue is that teams expect there 1st round top 10 pick QB to be NFL ready coming into the league. Which is possible but not every QB is like that. Like before Mahomes went to the Chiefs he was supposed to be a Bear, but do you really think he would've been as good as he is now if he went to bears.

perfectly immediately?! For as much as older people love to criticize my generation for being spoiled and unwilling to learn, they are the very same people that don't want to take the time to humble and develop the younger ones into something better.
You couldnt be more correct. Ive been training nurse practitioners for years now and they all go on to be successful. Because if i take a student on, i invest in them and their success. I get to know them, i get to know what drives them. I learn hownto motivate and teach them in a way thats effective for them while giving them structure to build on.
I didnt have that, i got thrown to the wolves and told to make money for someone and had to figure it all out. Im rare, most in that situation, never do. Even then i just learned indirectly from others elsewhere so im not going to pretend it was all my own doing.
Teaching skills is lost in this country. Nobody wants to or knows how to anymore.

Great video. This is exactly what’s happening with Justin Fields. He had a lame duck coach when he arrived, then got a rookie defensive minded head coach who hired a rookie offensive coordinator. Now, he’s being considered a bust by many fans in Chicago.
I think of he goes to the right team he can succeed. The bears are a mess anyways no one would succeed with that terrible coaching and organization.
@@HikarusukeShindou exactly. Obviously you compare players exactly, but you saw a lot of the same questions around Lamar Jackson. Supremely athletic with perceived limits as a passer. You have to believe having a great coach in Harbaugh and Flacco in front of him for a year taught him a lot.
We still love him here. If he gets the right coach, he will unlock the potential he has and become the MVP we all want, whether it’s with us in Chicago or elsewhere
Not by this fan, anybody who can’t teach a kid who throws like that, runs like that, and studies like that, it’s on them. I sincerely hope he stays in Chicago, and Kevin Warren is able to make the coaching staff professional, but he will be great somewhere.

Fields and Young for sure - I feel sorry for both. Pickett isn't quite as bad off. If nothing else, the Steelers are not a 1-9 type team so he has SOME talent around him
Idk about Young because Reich is beloved in NFL circles mainly because of what he did on the Bills + Philly + Indy even if the last few years were bad. If anything is to blame, it’s maybe ownership there because they’re just so mismanaged and it was evident with the whole Rhule situation. Robbie Anderson was normal before he got there.
Just startin the vid but I'm glad you coverin this topic. Its crazy how teams fail to grow their QBs. It seems like if they're not Mahomes in year 2, they're written off as a bust.

Even Mahomes sat for his rookie season behind Smith.
What if mahomes had went to a bad team, then No sbs, no mvp, none of that. And even on a good team the great qbs still need an oline, or else they have no time to throw, look at mahomes in the sb. Imagine if the jets had a serviceable o line. Good chance rodgers never gets hurt and we never talk abt wilson being a bust this year.

Nearly every young talented QB sat for at least the first half of their rookie season. Mahomes sat, Lamar was used primarily as a gadget player just to get used to being on the field. If you are going to play a rookie QB, you need to be ok with losing, at least for the first season or two. Or else let him sit and learn.
That's what us Panthers fans are going through this season. Bryce Young is going to be fine. We have an idiot owner, who has no insight on how to run a team. Hired a coach that was just fired during the season last year. No offensive line, and no big play threat. Beat us down while you can. Year 3 under Bryce Young, is going to be epic!

Bro, he got Aaron as a mentor since he's been in the League and now was as a teammate. This is no change. Maybe Sam Darnold, but Zach has gotten enough chances. Even with the right O-line, he doesn't make his reads.

Joe Burrow had a terrible O-line, but you saw his greatest. QB like Jared Goff needed a offensive line and you see the difference. QBs like Daniel Jones and Zach Wilson will need training wheels for 5+ and by that time your window to get anything done has closed.

BS. Zach had good teams around him and he just couldn’t elevate the players around him. The Jets did a lot to help out, but Zach never took advantage of it. It’s not always the organization’s fault. Sam Darnold and Geno did not have good teams around.
What blows my mind is that in an analytics-driven league that stat you just dished hasn't been acted on already. It's been such a bummer watching some really good qb prospects just get chewed up and spit out in bad situations.
Unfortunately the top drafted QBs are typically going to terrible franchises. Rarely you get to go to a great position like Mahomes. Jets failed both Darnold and Wilson.

Yeah, I think Mahomes getting drafted to the best situation in the NFL is incredibly underrated.
Alex Smith was considered a bust before going to KC then was in the MVP conversation with them.
If Mahomes went to the Bears or Jets, we would probably be looking at him as a talented QB who couldn't quite get it together with the coaching and team around him.
Jets and Browns have the same QB development issue.. they draft a QB expecting him to be their savior and when he isn’t, they blame him and bench him, and then when their veteran option either gets hurt or doesn’t work out, they have to turn to that guy again or someone like him, and the toxic cycle starts all over again. Texans kind of have that issue too.

@@eazymoney6158 According to Statmuse Browns were 30-30 all time with Mayfield, but eye test would tell you that experiment was such a dumpster fire. Him and Odell just didn’t connect and it blew up, Jarvis Landry was frozen out after Baker started trying to force it to OBJ, and they wasted a defense trying to make Baker the next savior of a franchise without actually being able to develop him. Browns were average with him statistically, but watching them play everyone could see Cleveland was struggling to make it work with him just like they did Manziel and Kizer and everyone else they tried to force into that spot.

All previous press conferences before that were fine. So it baffles me that everyone keep saying that he was immature as though he made these comments regularly.
According to him, he blanked out after that question; and doesn’t even remember saying “no” after Hughes asked him if he felt responsible for letting the defense down. So all it took is one press screw up to be forever damned in this cesspool. This adds to the toxicity of being exposed to the Jets organization, their fans and the NYC press.

Geno threw for a perfect passer rating against the dolphins his rookie year and went 8-8 with an aging/subpar jets team. He showed promise but he had his jaw broken by a practice squad DE and never got the job back.

Lamar and Mahomes didn't even play much there 1st season, they spent time developing to NFL gamespeed, Lamar under Flaco, and Mahomes under Smith, Hurts was under Wentz.
Even the legendary Peyton was no good 1st season.
College QB's are investments, you see a boy with talent, you raise em up, teach em real good then a year later, start that guy, then you make real money.
I think Sam darnold was given a worse stick. I wish we stuck with him because he could throw the ball. Some of the throws Zach makes are sooo bad I really can’t stick up for him. Bad decisions are one thing but the lack of accuracy is mind blowing sometimes.
Darnold for sure was a 2 contract project. Sit him for 3- 5 yrs. But u need a stable and highly competent staff/front office. Most teams don’t have.
Give him what Zach has now and shit is different. A lot of people forget he was playing for Adam Gase and his best option was Le’veon Bell being run into the ground with terrible play calls and a worse o line than he had in Pittsburgh. Sam Darnold with a certified number 1 in Garrett and a backfield of Breece Hall, the only thing he’d have to figure out is getting the ball out quickly.

Yeah I think Darnold makes more sense. For the most part the Jets did right by Zach and he let them down more so than they let him down. Darnold didn't have any help.
Zach can't read a defense at all. He's totally oblivious with the ball. Outside of a few 2 minute drills he makes it look like you or I could come off the street and flop it around like he does.
Trevor Lawrence is a perfect example of how important proper development is to unlocking potential. He was basically being called a bust in his first year, now under Pederson he’s a top 5 NFL QB

I'm a jet fan and Zack haves a lot of talent. That's why I was excited that the Jets got Aaron Rodgers for he can mentor him. Because the jets does not know how to invest into a quarterback. And they threw him into the fire and NYC wants to win now and will trash you if you lose. I want Zack to grow and show his potential. I hope he can become the quarterback that I know he can become.

Alot of people have this idea that one person or in these cases “one man” … can change an entire village on his skills alone. It can happen, but it’s uncommon. There have been a lot of talented QBs littered throughout NFL history who were handicapped by their own franchises. They are reason enough to show that a QB has to be in a decent situation to survive in the league and become an effective player.
Lamar Jackson did do it in BMore. People forget Harbaugh was on the verge of being fired before he pulled Flacco in 2018.
@@teddyjackson1902he also won a superbowl with Flacco who proceeded to never play to that level ever again and drag the team down with his contract. Lamar is great but he has a great coach as well who's built a team around lamar.

@@tim6454 2015 they were 5-11, 2016 they were 8-8, 2017 they were 9-7. They missed the playoffs each season. In 2018 the ravens were 4-5 entering their contest against the Bengals on Sunday Nov 18. It was Jackson’s first start and they won 24-21. With Jackson starting the rest of the way they finished the season 10-6 and made the playoffs with a receiving corps that consisted of Willie Snead and Michael Crabtree. There was no “building around Lamar Jackson”. Flacco got injured. Lamar came in and started winning immediately. It is what it is. Be mad about it if you want.
I look at my Texans and how well CJ Stroud has performed as a rookie and it’s definitely a combo of nature and nurture as well. CJ seems to be a natural leader with a strong work ethic and the Texans have put together a quality offensive staff with Bobby Slowick as the OC and Jerrod Johnson as QB Coach. Invested in the QB room with vet like Case Keenum. And in spite of all the injuries the O-line has had kept him upright.
Their alignment was designed by God.. no b.s Look at the timeline in all of their lives that lead them together. Houston, it's like the perfect storm.

It started before the pros, Stroud went to a school with an exponentially better football program. I'm not trying to undermined Stroud's talent, he's miles ahead of Zach Wilson, but what he was able to learn and develop at Ohio State is so much better than whatever Wilson was being taught at BYU and I believe that makes Stroud a much more capable rookie than Zach Wilson was.
If that's the case , why have Ohio State Qbs flamed out in the NFL?

Zach’s development arch likely had to mirror what Josh Allen’s was. A young team to grow with, and a strong offensive minded coach (Daboll & Dorsey) who can let him do what he does WELL and work on the finer parts of his game.
Gregg Knapp the coach we hired to develop Zach tragically died before his rookie year, but Zach showed gunslinger traits early with mistakes (as expected) but I feel the jets wanted to play the game a certain way and make him a game manager. He was never going to be that. Sucks to watch us fail this prospect
That’s exactly what happened. It baffles when I see so many with no football intelligence stress that the Jets failures are mostly on the young and raw QB.

Current NFL has a ton of pressure to play the new hot rookie QB. Maybe it's always been that way, but it has made me wonder how much better some of these guys would be if they had time before they were thrust to the front and center of the stage. Great video laying out all these ideas!

Catch-22 they want to get you out & see what you got but then they cut you because you don't do as well. A little time on the sideline makes a big difference.
Also you have to remember how much rookies are getting paid nowadays. The teams want their money's worth nowadays.
Matt Hasselback = Baker Mayfield good but not great, can win but won’t win when it matters. Drew Bledsoe for example good quarterback but they had Brady to sit behind him . If baker had a good Qb like Bledsoe to play under I think he’d be great cause he was 1 pick. Hasselback was good but could never win but he at least had Farve under him to play under . Wilson might be doomed from the start has never had anything
At some point, not putting that infrastructure in place, and then expecting a high draft pick to magically fix everything is analogous to a "get rich quick scheme."
As a Jets fan, great job at summing up the situation surrounding Zach's Jets career. Steve Young and Tiki Barber have said over and over again: the NY Jets was the wrong situation for a raw QB like Zach Wilson. The 49ers actually had a similar situation as the Jets, they drafted Trey Lance right after Zach at #3. When Lance and then Garropolo got hurt and they found "Mr. Irrelevant" - Brock Purdy - could actually play QB, they moved on from Lance and Jimmy G. The Jets had their own Mr. Irrelevant in Mike White and they should have kept him and moved on from Zach Wilson; even if they were going to bring in AR8, Mike White would've been a better back-up. Recognizing and cutting your losses is a hard thing to do, but good organizations know when it's the right thing to do.

The Greg Knapp tragedy reminds me of what happened with Randall Cunningham after his QB mentor, Doug Scovil, died during the 1989 season. Injuries didn’t help, but Randall definitely plateaued for the rest of his time in Philly when he should have legitimately ended up in the conversation for best QB ever by the time he retired.

I feel like the same thing can be said about Justin Fields. They had the opportunity to right the ship when they Fired Nagy and they didn't even attempt to get a support with enough experience to develop him

If you are old like me, you've seen there is little to no QB development any more. In the past, rookies sat and learned, but now they are immediately thrown into the deep end and either sink or swim.

To add to your point about having a veteran quarterback. Even more important is having a good QB coach who can work on the fundamentals of playing the position, like footwork, accuracy, timing, and anticipation. Obviously, if you are drafting a QB, you would hope your scouting department, front office, and coaching staff did their due diligence and made sure he has the right physical intangibles (Arm Strength, Size, ability to read defenses pre and post-snap, mobility, pocket presence, etc.) that is necessary to be functional in the league.

Thank you for saying all this because honestly I feel like alot of starting QBs today are dealing with going to a team they aren't fit for, or the team isn't fit for them. I think about my own team, the Patriots and how Mac can't do anything with what he's been given, but also was he really a good fit for the team in the first place?! And then I live in Pittsburgh, and I'm thinking about the fact that they just fired Matt Canada, but I don't think Kenny is the answer either. I think he is a raw talent, that Pittsburgh can't do anything with. It's just tough for alot of these guys. I think there are real questions that are gonna have to be answered here real soon with some of these teams that keep putting the blame or sport media keeps putting the blame on QBs, instead of looking at the team as a whole and how it's functioning as a whole. Everything can't be the quarterbacks fault.....
I feel the same way about the Panthers and Bryce Young. Bryce's struggles isn't necessarily because of his lack of talent, but because the team isn't built around him and is a complete shit show.
I think Nurture is the way to go. With the right amount then the nature will show. Not everyone is a generational QB that can start from year 1 and be amazing. Like you said, The right QB room and environment is the #1 thing teams need to focus on. Hell when I played Madden back in the day I would always have a vet start over the rookie and slowly work their stats up their rookie season so the next year or year after their stats would jump when they started 😂

I feel bad for any young QB that had to endure the dumpster fire that has been the Jets (since ‘11). They need to continue to get veteran QBs or young studs gunning for their second contract
This was a fantastic assessment! Thank you! Just because you have all the ingredients doesn’t mean you can cook a 5 star meal. Experience is very important to have on a team and coaching staff especially when dealing with young players. And heck even so for some veterans who needed a little extra time to click. The Alex Smith and Hasselback examples you provided are on point. And you can even look around to other teams; Geno Smith, Brock Purdy, Tua, Jared Goff; situation matters. You can see some of the mental development in Wilson with Rodgers around and as a Lions fan I can see certain aspects of Jordan Love’s game that Rodgers influenced and though it might take some game time for the results to click I fear when it does as a division rival. Even my own teams Qb Goff has had an evolution in his career. The Rams put him in both good and bad spots. Fisher had trouble dealing with a rookie and things improved with the fresher face of McVay, but at some point there the trust was severed and it took the move to Detroit to finally experience a true change and development of his mental fortitude. And he is part of why I think Henson Hooker could be wildly successful. The Qb room consists of great veterans in the aforementioned Goff and Bridgewater, along with the Qb coach being longtime player Mark Brunell. Talent matters but environment matters too.

@@Foreign84 Yes. 2004 was the first year the Chargers became a good team, prior that they were pretty bad. Chargers went 12-4 in 2004. Drew Brees was starting QB and did well. Antonio Gates was there at TE and Ladanian Tomlinson was a stud RB still. Marty Schottenheimer was Head Coach.

Great video. Zach's an interesting player. The hardest thing is seeing how he isn't getting that much better, and he's had more chances than most players who were playing this bad. The best thing for him and the Jets is definitely to separate. Only unfortunate thing is he's probably going to get picked up by a desperate organization that probably won't be able to help him much.

Yea their line sucks and front office is bad, but every top 10 pick is gana land on a team with some degree of dysfunction. I mean Burrow had to play behind one of the worst O-lines I've ever seen and was carrying them to playoff wins while getting sacked an average of 3 times per game.

The only thing I dont understand about him or rather his very, *VERY* high draft is.
For 10 straight years NFL Analysts, Scouts and GMs told us that we cant draft Ohio Quarterbacks (Braxton Miller, TJ Barrett, Terrelle Pryor, Troy Smith, Cardale Jones, Dwayne Haskins, Justin Fields, CJ Stroud), because they were (allegedly) all shyte or because they are not smart or because they have bad Wonderlic scores.
But then they suddenly turned around and drafted a Quarterback (Zach Wilson) from Bringham Young University somewhere in Utah. And I`m like... WTF?????????????????????? I just dont get it.

Say what you want…Green Bay has a long history of QB development-thanks to Ron Wolf’s philosophy that you can never overvalue the QB position. Like you pointed out the QB room in GB during the 90’s was insane! They also draft late in the first (because they’re always “good”), and aren’t afraid to let a first round pick sit for a few years. First class organization that develops later round talent into all stars (Adams, Nelson, Bahk, Jones…etc).

Zach Wilson was on a treadmill, but he got the opportunity to have a reset. He was getting to learn behind Rodgers. Rodgers was given a massive head start. The offensive coordinator was a he loved working with, the man that ran Packers offense. This was a guy that almost ruined Russell Wilson. He runs very complicated offensive schemes. Zach instead of getting a reset, was thrown back on the treadmill set for sh@t what now.

It’s not his fault because of his shotty qb play; the organization is 100% at fault because Zach obviously wasn’t ready. When he got drafted, he should have sat down for a year behind a starting veteran. Throw him out there if there’s a blowout. But if the starting qb is out with an injury, don’t hand the kid the reigns yet.
The jets have always had a “win now” complex and never have any patience to develop a quarterback. They suck at it. Until they change that development strategy, they will continue to lose and that hurts like hell, as a Jets’ fan.

Seems like the Jets just can't catch a break. Every QB prospect they've tried since Mark Sanchez has some infamous bad luck shit - Mark Sanchez had the butt fumble, Geno got his jaw broken in a fight with a teammate, Darnold got mono and saw "ghosts", Zach Wilson's mentor died before he could mentor him... then when they decide to bring in an established veteran he gets a wipe out injury after his first few plays. Maybe they should've gotten a veteran QB who never gets injured, someone like Kirk Cousi........ oh.....

If im coming up as a High Draft QB quarterback im gonna try my best to have a least 5 retired QBs on speed dial that i can call to teach me the ropes. Im pretty sure there are tons of QBs who wouldn't mind either.
There has always been an empathy deficiency problem in news media and especially in this case, sports media. People don’t want to stop and view what goes on in the periphery when it comes to the QB development process, because it doesn’t sell.
A QB’s worth and ceiling apparently must be a matter of trial by fire. Not saying that Zack Wilson is the guy and the project should be resuscitated, but you can’t knowingly draft a guy like him under these circumstances and expect a guaranteed playoff run. This seems to be the status quo nowadays and sports media is definitely stoking the flames.

I used to always see rookie QBs, even too draft picks, being benched for 2-3 seasons before they started so they could learn the game and develop so they wouldn’t be in a situation where they could easily fail if they didn’t have immediate success. The last I can remember was Aaron Rodgers behind Favre but even that was partly due to Favre not letting go. It sure seemed like it used to be standard practice though. Now it’s sink or swim from day 1 and I think many good players never get a fair shot at becoming what they could be after taking so many sacks and not knowing the speed of the game, playbook, etc..
They did him dirty. They abandoned that kid to take all the heat and didn't do anything to acclimate him properly into the nfl. They through him in the fire, let him develope bad habits then did nothing to correct it. They were just gonna let Rodgers do it but he didn't cuz he got hurt
It's all a sign of a desperate franchise, feeling lost since '69 and wishing they weren't the example of "sad" in the NFL. Browns do the same shit. Lions have done the same shit.
One of the main problems in New York Sports is that we have HIGH standards unfortunately. Our expectations can be pretty delusional much of the time. The Jets don't make smart draft picks especially In the first round

Ben Roethlisbeger is a great example of this. He had Bill Cowher and Ken Whisenhunt on the coaching staff plus Tommy Maddox and Charlie Batch to learn from. Plus just a great team all around him.
Charlie Batch is the GOAT back-up QB.

Wilson is the NFL equivalent of James Wiseman. covid-era led to scouts only seeing the ceiling of his physical gifts and not a picture of how he can handle next level. a project who went to a team that was looking for immediate results, albeit for different reasons in his case. he has a great arm and can run, but he’s not good at managing tight pockets and his mechanics collapse with pressure. I don’t think it’s ever been maturity, he just struggles to keep up at the next level and it happens. I also think it’s weird of people to expect him to say “I’m a bum”, it takes an incomprehensible amount of self-belief and talent to get to the level he’s at.
it’s probably too late for him to become Josh Allen. he also isn’t Geno because he showed way more comfort early in his career, he just would make a few catastrophic plays every game to offset the good ones and then he got hit with some bad luck during formative development stages.

I've always said this as a Bills fan, Josh Allen would have never succedded with anyother team, maybe the Ravens. The Bills had patientce and good coaching. I think Darnold could have been something if he went to a stable team.

I think that Zach Wilson accountability criticism is mad overblown. He literally has learned from his mistakes and he took accountability for the losses in games lost this year.
What exactly did he “learn”? Learning implies not making the same mistakes over and over…i.e. improving. Wilson talks the talk…and that’s about it.
