  • A jighead and soft plastic swimbait or curly-tail grub is a simple but effective lure to catch all kinds of fish in freshwater and saltwater. Plastic swimbaits come with paddle tails, straight tails, and other variations that all have their applications to catch a lot of fish. Beginners to fishing can use these lures effectively with a simple retrieve, or advanced anglers can modify the rig or adjust the retrieve to catch finicky fish when they hesitate to bite anything else.

    Every year as I wait for the MN bass/pike/walleye opener, I’m reminded how fun and simple a Beetlespin is as I can only target panfish. And the price is right too!

    Oh believe me, these are nearly always my first choice when fishing, well over hard baits. Multiple sizes, colors and finishes. I love these things!

      They feel a lot more natural to a fish than a hard bait too, so they'll often give you more time to set the hook. Great for both beginners and experienced anglers.

    Maaaan, your explanation of how to rig up a jig and soft plastic was…. 👌
    I was a little too embarrassed to ask my fishing friends how to set it up properly and couldn’t find a video that explained it half as good as you did.
    Thank you, sir.

    got more into fishing recently and these lures have been my absolute go to. 1/16 oz jigheads with 1 inch gulp minnows for panfish, and 4/0 weighted weedless, and the normal top style hooks with assorted keitech 4in shiners. caught my pb bass and my first pickerel on the 4inch ones. so easy to set up and swap colors and not the end of the world if you lose it, not that they are easy to snag. I kayak fish so getting in the weeds is pretty common. I cant recommend the little split tail smelt minnows enough if you are catching fish to eat, was hooking bluegill on every cast with them where my dad with worms had to replace his bait every catch.

      @FishingwithNat  2 місяці тому +2

      A small jighead with a 1-inch gulp is amazing for big bluegills/crappie/perch/rock bass. Non-stop action if you get into a good school of them.

    These types bait are the first lures I cast anywhere in freshwater. They may differ in size and weight, but they have always worked and many times they are the best producing lures on the water for me. I say start small and increase as you learn that body of water...

    • @FishingwithNat
      @FishingwithNat  2 місяці тому

      I agree. Starting small is always a good plan as you figure out that body of water.

    Nice vid Nat! I was having a really good day with salmon last summer, and I decided to test some things out. I switched to a yellowy lime green curly-tail I think my dad used to use for walleye. I was fishing it in a river, twitching jig style. Then a coho smoked it, but soon bent the hook and swam off. Really does catch, or almost everything haha

    I remember as kid fishing with a Neon Yellow Jig & Head, I caught so many panfish then. I still fish the JIG, even with live bait attached. I just had trouble getting my jig to look just right moving through the water, I think it was because I hooked it up wrong.

    • @FishingwithNat
      @FishingwithNat  4 дні тому

      Yeah you do have to rig the plastic correctly or it can mess up the action and appearance of the bait

    Me and some friends went fishing the other day. They were using spinners, crack baits, whopper ploppers and a whole assortment of lures. I went with a simple 20 cent white grub worm with a hand painted pink 1/8oz jig head. For the entire time (except for the first 20 mins before i lost a tube/jig setup to a snag)
    While i only caught two chain pickerel on the whole 5 hour outing, i was still the only one to catch any fish at all. Towards the end of the trip, they were trying to match what i was using with their own gear and stubbornly choosing to not borrow the extras i had offered. 😂

    Hi, I'm a newbie to fishing. I live in upper midwest like you do and enjoy your videos. The assortment of jigs I have had handed down to me have a very small hole which doesn't seem to easily accept snaps or snap-swivels. Is it a must to tie line directly to jig?

    • @FishingwithNat
      @FishingwithNat  10 днів тому

      No, you can use jigs with snaps. I wouldn't recommend snap swivels with jigs because they really change the appearance of the jig and your jig shouldn't be spinning anyway (so no need for a swivel). Is the small hole the entire size of the metal loop/eye, or is it just a small hole in the paint that could be enlarged more?

    • @jimharris6036
      @jimharris6036 10 днів тому

      @@FishingwithNat The jigs I have are similar to what you show @00:34 of this video. The problem may be my snaps are too large in diameter in terms of the wire gauge. I'm a little confused on what snap sizes are best.

    What kind of knot do I use for these? Do I need a weight? I'm a beginner!

    • @FishingwithNat
      @FishingwithNat  2 місяці тому

      You generally don't need a weight with these because the jighead provides plenty of weight by itself. You would only add weight if you want to fish really deep but keep a fairly small profile to the bait itself. The knot you tie is more influenced by the type of line you're using. You can tie anything for a jighead and swimbait. Check out this quick video about the types of knots and when to use them ua-cam.com/video/rdx_9P7a3N0/v-deo.html

    • @FishingwithNat
      @FishingwithNat  Місяць тому

      Straight retrieve, bottom bouncing, up-and-down motion with the rod tip while retrieving...I tend to move the bait slower when the water is colder or if the fish are hesitant to bite.

    • @FishingwithNat
      @FishingwithNat  2 місяці тому

      Fancier lures can be more fun to use and watch, for sure. But it stings when you lose one and they often perform just the same as a simple jig and plastic.
