- It's easy to spend hundreds of dollars on a tackle box of pretty lures, but you really don't need all that. The best way to become a better angler is to focus on a small number of lures and get really good at using those. With time, you will want to move up to more lures and more colors, but they are not essential for beginners to start catching a lot of fish and having a lot of fun. This video discusses my top 5 beginner fishing baits and how/when to use them.

You are doing a great job breaking these things down in a way that's both digestible and actionable. Thanks again for another great video!
Great. Thanks for the comment!
@@FishingwithNat I would say get two copies each of 5 - 6 different lures; there's always a chance you can lose a bait on a snag...
@@NobleKorhedron Very true. It stinks when you lose a hot bait and don't have a similar replacement to tie on.
Wish i saw this video when i started fishing, it took almost 1 AND A HALF YEARS to catch my first fish, still haven't caught any fish then because the lakes where I live in texas theres A LOT of lakes that are REALLY pressured
Good luck! Let us know how you do now!
Just caught my first one yesterday small mouth bass
Really appreciate your channel. Keeping it simple with practical and useful teachings while feeling more gender inclusive than most other UA-cam fishing channels. Thanks for the content!
Thank you. Fishing is for everyone! My daughter caught some giants at age 6 that were bigger than most adults have ever caught.
Ur the best channel for fishing especially ur playlists abt lures and teaching
Thank you - I really appreciate the nice comment.
Best fishing tutorials on youtube. I caught 14 fish today... learned a lot here! Thanks
Awesome - sounds like a good day!
Really curious now to try a plastic minnow type lure for its versatility. I love seeing the variety of nature and want to try to catch every local species at least once, hopefully using best practices I can learn to make post-catch mortality least likely. Your videos have been really helpful for a newbie like me, thank you.
Sounds like a very fun and rewarding challenge. Check out my How to Fish with Soft Plastic Baits for Beginners video ua-cam.com/video/x47vZTN90f0/v-deo.html and my Life of a Fish series which covers a single species in each video and talks about biology and best practices for catching them. ua-cam.com/play/PLcXAWxBLRzoIKKtdUnBBQMyITNse-V6t9.html

Just went back fishing after decades as kids want to learn. Just understood how much I didn't know about fishing. lol
good channel sir, good clear cut info. Subscribed out of a million fishing channels.
Thanks for the comment - I'm glad you enjoy my videos!
I've been getting into fishing and building a box, mine looks a lot like this tutorial does. First luck was corn under a bobber for a bluegill, then i started bobbing one of those pink/white mini-mite jigs in a small pond and depending on the day you can hook a perch or a chub every other cast.
Corn under a bobber is a reliable way to catch bluegills. Or a tiny piece of Gulp plastic wax worm on a hook instead of the corn. It will last through multiple fish before you have to rebait. Mini-mites are great for perch and chubs like you said and crappies too.
Thank you for explaining so well. I’m trying to learn how to fish with my daughter and your vids help a lot.
I'm glad to hear that. Thank you for the feedback.
Rapala shad rap shallow running is my favorite, I just love fishing it around vegetation and over underwater rock piles where fast moving water meets slow moving water. Absolute walleye and asp magnet, almost all colors work (would recommend the ones that match local baitfish) but by far most useful for me was chartreuse one.
Then I snagged it and broke it off.
Good stuff. Sorry to hear that you lost it though!
Hi, I’ve been fishing for a while now, since I was 4, but I still do need some tips on what baits to use in what conditions, I mostly go for bluegill, sometime I’ll throw a spoon around for pike and sometimes I’ll use minnows for walleye and perch, but I still need tips on how to use some lures and fish certain conditions great video btw
Thanks. I'd recommend checking out my Learn How to Fish playlist - there's a ton of videos there about specific types of lures and techniques to use them. ua-cam.com/play/PLcXAWxBLRzoLwZtDQEhuaHby0yQM_wHhU.html&si=XmbkXRdLJNkglQaq
Thanks for always posting straight forward and easily understood information. Currently rediscovering fishing and your tips have definitely made me for more comfortable when I get out there. Do you have tips for a person stuck on the bank?
I appreciate the comment. What do you typically fish for from the bank? Rivers or pond/lakes?
Not sure how you're getting those wonderful shots underwater of the lures but you need to keep that a trade secret! Best footage on UA-cam.
Thanks. It's not easy but I enjoy it. 🙂
Another awesome bait for beginners is a simple 2” tube jig. You can fish it Carolina rig or on it’s own, it will catch me crappie and perch all day long in the pnw.
Absolutely
Greatly appreciate all the videos, great breakdown as always
Thank you - I appreciate the comment.
Decent recommendations that will work great for a multi-species angler.
First few years of kayak fishing I used mostly round head jigs with a grub or twister tail. Eventually I started throwing spinnerbaits and some other lures more. I definitely think it’s good to spend time with a few lures and gain some confidence in them.
Absolutely. Thanks for the feedback.

Hey man, i’ve Been fishing for about 1-2 years now and im good but i suck at Throwing spinners, i like more heavy baits thats small but still has a little weight, you know what i mean?
The secret to throwing spinners is to use line that's not too heavy, and it often works best to start retrieving them the instant they hit the water.
Try using them on a lighter rod; my usual rods range from 3g to 20g casting weight, and on the heavier end I'm throwing large soft lures, bulky plugs, and/or medium spoons.
For spinnerbaits, spinners, and spoons, always retrieve immediately, or shortly after, they hit water.
If you insist on not retrieving immediately, a good guideline is to count to quickly count to three - like you're referring a wrestling match - and then start the retrieve.
Im just getting into fishing. Im starting basic.. like really basic.
Ive got an ugly stick rod with some light line and basic lures.
One question i have is, do you add a weight to these lures? Or is thebweight of the lure enough?
No problem - everybody started with the basics. The weight of the lure is all you need, except in rare cases. I think you would learn a ton by checking out some of the videos in this playlist ua-cam.com/play/PLcXAWxBLRzoLwZtDQEhuaHby0yQM_wHhU.html
@@FishingwithNat thank you!
Can you make a video on how to fish without bobbers using lures? I am a beginner and want to learn to fish without a bobber.
I made a video about types of lures and when to use them ua-cam.com/video/SamrdgVjpQk/v-deo.html
Good Collection lures
Thanks - it's hard to go wrong with any of these.
Such a great channel!

My first bait was a good old fashion night crawler
It's hard to beat a nightcrawler!
Tks for your sharing
You're welcome. Good luck!
Superb 👍❤️
Thanks

I think lures look cool so I might buy some for decoration
I have a Wall of Fame/Shame of lures that are broken from catching so many big fish, and some that are just downright beautiful so they are on display.
@@FishingwithNat some I bet are made to lure humans in instead of fish lol
@@lordofthecats9251 Absolutely. And they do a good job at it.
Please keep this up❤
Thanks. More to come.
I like fishing very much.
Me too!
Got a video idea for you -- "Beginner Tips: Avoiding Poorly Designed Lures"
I dropped $70 on just five Luhr-Jensen Kwikfish lures because a professional California salmon-fishing guide swore by them in a MeatEaters episode. He dropped the lures behind his boat and trolled them upstream, got bit by Chinooks quite a lot.
I bought the same lures and used them to shore fish in Alaska... turns out the lures are garbage when casted. Each and every one of my six Kwikfish lures tangled frequently in the air because the dual treble hooks are engineered too close together and/or are too large.
For nearly $15 apiece you'd think Luhr-Jensen could have solved that problem for me ahead of time (never did get a salmon on them, by the way, even after fixing the tangling hooks issue).
Now I always check if a lure's treble hooks can self-tangle before buying it. You simply hold the lure and try to tangle the trebles by hand. If the trebles overlap at all, consider a different lure.
Also I've given up on Bluefox Vibrax in-line spinning lures. The wire running down its center, acting like a spine, seems to get bent a lot in my well-organized tacklebox no matter how much I baby them. They also never seem to fit in my tackle box's slots properly, as if the lures are always just a bit too big. Going to explore the Mepps lures you've suggested.
I've run across those problems too. Sounds like the Kwikfish was designed well as a trolling bait (as long as it doesn't tangle on the initial cast) but not so much as a casting bait. Good idea to look at the treble hook spacing on a lure at the store. I know some people swap out new trebles on brand new baits, but they should come with appropriate trebles right out of the box in my opinion.
Not gonna lie i was happy to get a baitcaster and honestly ive only caught one baby catfish they just dont seen to want to bite as with my spinning rod i put shrimp and constantly get bites 😢
There's nothing wrong with spinning rods over baitcasters. I have both but prefer my spinning gear too.
Does it work with MALAYSIA fish
I would guess yes, but I have never fished in Malaysia, so I can't say for sure. Predatory fishes in any country tend to target smaller baitfish, so I would think they would work in any country, even though the species will vary between countries.
Ur videos are super good
Thank you - I appreciate the comment.
Can you make video lure / bait for seashore 😢😢
Sorry - I live very far from the ocean, so I don't have much experience with saltwater fishing.
tysm bro god bless

no slow pitch jiggs, inchiku or kabura ? - i am dissapointed
There are other good beginner baits but I chose these based on ease of use, versatility with many fish species, low cost, and availability.
@@FishingwithNat
It was a joke, these are all deep sea techniques haha, i doubt any of it would work in a pond, river or a lake xd
I wish I would have seen this video before buying lures lol
Thanks for the comment. There's no harm in adding a couple more lures to your arsenal. 🙂
Same lol
roostertails always seem to work when theyre not biting
It's hard to go wrong with a Rooster Tail. It's one of my favorite baits.
🤘
Thanks
Whats the best one im bigginer
All of those shown in the video are great for beginners and can be used to catch a wide variety of species in a wide variety of situations. It's hard to pick just one because the best one really depends on the situation you're fishing.
🎉
I'm glad you liked the video!
