I'm so glad social media did not exist when I was 14/15 (which is, ahem, 30 years ago) and I started discovering Black Metal. No one would put corpsepaint on unless they were in a band going on stage or doing promo photos. It was something you did to enhance the performance and atmosphere of the gig. A few years later it was only fans of Cradle of Filth that put corpsepaint on for gigs, and they were laughed at by everyone else....
The gayest thing about it (besides Gorgoroth) is that no one changes it up why does it always have to look like kiss there’s makeup ppl on yt doing some wild undead themes

Just smear some white and black on your face, and try to make it look like that you are an actual corpse. Sablast did a great video on this topic.

I'm gonna have to disagree with most comments bc I'm not really mad at these kind of tiktoks 🤷🏻♀️ most of them are kids just trying to have fun, and yeah probably most of the ones doing corpse pain aren't really into black metal but it's just makeup. I for one don't like black metal that much but I think doing corpse paint is great. It's not that I do it everyday to record tiktoks but I've done it a couple of times for photos and stuff. Everyone can have their opinions ofc but honestly I don't think that metal TikTok is that bad or that deep🤷🏻♀️

black metal opened a new world for me. I used to only listen to heavy metal (mostly thrash) abd I hated everything else. One day I found BM, I fell in love and I became a cringe elitist for a while. Few years passed, and now I pretty much listen to everything, pop music included. The passion from bm music made me appreciate music more.
I started listening to Taylor Swift while I was really into Burzum so I can agree with that.

For me, face paint went out in around 1999, once I was no longer a teenager!
Once Emperor discarded the make-up I realised that the music would always be the important part of it, face paint has long since lost its original meaning and I was about 14 when I was getting into black metal back in the early 90s, but I'll be 43 soon and all I care about now is aural evil and/or epicness!
I mean I guess people think it’s fun, it’ll be amusing at least to go to concerts and see people with face paint on

OMG this reminds me of a 16-17 yo me showing off my corpsepaint on a UA-cam video and randos commenting that I suck 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I 'm 31 now. I guess Tik Tok is the evolution of that same thing. I feel ancient, but this also seems so familiar. We were all kids once and I was genuinely proud of showing off my new music tastes and my appearance at that age. Anyway, the difference between gen z and us before though is that we were part of a "subculture" and kids these days are part of an "aesthetic".
Honestly as someone who is a part of gen z I 100% agree with you and although I don't know as much as other people when it comes to bm (as I am barely starting to get into it) I truly enjoy it for what it is not because I want to appear a certain way to others. Many ppl my age that claim to be "alternative" are only trying to appear that way to fit an aesthetic and many don't listen to the music in specific subcultures. This goes for goth, grunge, metal, emo, and many others. I could see why older generations would not like mine tbh lol.

Also, it makes me wonder had TikTok been a thing when we were kids (Boris and I), would we have been swept up in it all too? I would like to think not but I don’t really know. There will allways be morrons who give other people (men and women) a hard time for stupid reasons. But as a Metalhead you can usually spot pretty easily who is genuine and who is not. If a woman is indeed genuine, there is no reason why she wouldn't be accepted in the same way as anybody else. But if a man or woman is not genuine, they wont be accepted regardless of what gender they happen to be.

Why is this so unexpected when most black metal is just posturing and style over content anyway ? It claims to be Satanic , it's not , and most black metallers have no real interest in or knowledge about Satan or Satanism . They just use supposedly Satanic imagery because they think it's cool . The thing that appeals most about black metal to these kids is the "shock" factor and the industry plays up to that . Satan is the primordial rebel . He didn't revolt against Yahweh because he thought it might shock his grandma or look good on TikTok. And he never wore corpse paint....
