    Constipation Treatments at Home
    1. Osmotic Laxatives
    One of the treatments for constipation after hysterectomy is the use of osmotic laxatives, such as Macrogol, Movicol, or Osmolax. These laxatives help soften the stool and make it easier to pass. They can be prescribed by your doctor or recommended by a pharmacist to alleviate constipation symptoms.
    2. Safe Exercise
    Engaging in safe and gentle exercises is another method to relieve constipation after hysterectomy. Walking is an ideal exercise for most women during hysterectomy recovery, as it stimulates bowel movements and promotes overall healing. It is advisable to perform short walks at regular intervals throughout the day, unless otherwise instructed by your doctor.
    3. Bowel Emptying Technique
    Bowel emptying techniques are crucial in relieving constipation after hysterectomy. By adopting the right position and technique, you can avoid straining and reduce pain during bowel movements.
    a. Position
    Sitting down with a tall spine and leaning forward while placing your hands on your thighs can facilitate easier bowel emptying.
    b. Technique
    Deep breathing techniques can also be helpful in relaxing the pelvic floor muscles to avoid straining. The brace and bulge ‘Moo to Poo’ is the best bowel movement technique to use after surgery.
    4. Constipation Diet
    Dietary changes may be necessary to manage constipation after hysterectomy. While a high-fiber diet is generally recommended for regular bowel movements, reducing high-fiber foods temporarily can be beneficial in alleviating constipation. Your doctor or a registered dietitian can provide guidance on adopting a lower-fiber diet that is suitable for your specific needs during this recovery period.
    Severe Constipation
    If constipation persists or becomes severe, it is important to consult your doctor or pharmacist for further management and advice. They can assess your situation and provide appropriate interventions or recommend alternative treatments to address constipation after hysterectomy.
    By following these strategies, including medication, safe exercise, proper bowel emptying techniques, and dietary adjustments, you can effectively relieve and manage painful constipation after hysterectomy.

    I suffered for 4 months after my hysterectomy with constipation, and was living on laxatives, which caused me to lose 18 pounds. I was already slim, so this weight loss very concerning. What worked finally for me was watching a podcast where a gastroenterologist said to eat 2 kiwi fruit together every day (I have mine an hour after dinner), and the following morning I always have a bowel movement. Kiwi fruit he said hydrates the bowel and contains fibre. I have to add that I also have a small glass of organic prune juice before bed. The prune juice alone did not help my situation until I added the kiwi fruit. I hope this helps. I also do the moo technique, which I have found very helpful as I had the hysterectomy because of uterine prolapse. For prolapse issues or pelvic floor strengthening I have been seeing a pelvic floor physiotherapist, but also use every night before going to sleep the Kegel8 Ultra 20 from England. I ordered this on-line and had it delivered to Canada. Using the exercises from the physiotherapist and the Kegel8 Ultra 20 has increased my pelvic floor muscles from .5 out of 5 to a 4 out of 5. I hope this helps as I do not wish anyone to go through what I went through. I also have to mention that I tried everything I could find and asked my doctors what to do about my constipation, and nothing help me until I started eating Kiwi.

      You're wonderful for sharing this. I've been lurking hysterectomy forums and I remember hearing about eating kiwi and the moo technique. I'll start eating kiwi as well

    Thank you so much for this video. My hysterectomy is in a couple of weeks and I have been feeling anxious about what my digestive system will be like afterwards. Kiwi fruit is on my shopping list for sure!

      @mmsingingstar88 You're very welcome! It's natural to feel anxious about changes after a hysterectomy, but having a plan for managing your digestive system can make a big difference. Best of luck with your surgery🙏

    Thank you for addressing what is not being spoken about enough. I just had an abdominal hysterectomy 8 days ago. I've been left with a very hard stool just inside my rectum on the left side. I was given numerous laxatives, and enemas but "the rock" hasn't dislodged. It is slightly less uncomfortable (I can sit now !) but it is still very prevalent. Perhaps it's only wearing away a thin layer every day?? I don't have constipation per say. All rest is running smoothly. I can't strain anymore because I've developed a hemorrhoid. Any advice and encouragement would be so very welcome.

      I know your pain. Had my hysterectomy last Tuesday and still haven't been able to move my bowels. The pressure is so intense. Also had prolapse surgery so very scared of splitting stitches. Have used 2 enemas from the pharmacy and still nothing. Thankyou for your video will definitely be trying these techniques.

    Thank you for the information! Is there any benefit to start stool softners befor surgery? Im having surgery in 5 days

    • @michellephysio
      @michellephysio  9 місяців тому +3

      @marisolrodriguez3162 Absolutely, preferably osmotic laxative rather than softeners eg Movicol, Osmolax (polyethylene glycol) check with your pharmacist. Most patients take this at least 6 weeks post op especially when prone to constipation. All the best for your upcoming surgery and wishing you a speedy recovery MK 🙏 ❤️

    • @michellephysio
      @michellephysio  11 місяців тому +1

      @devinderkalsi689 first step is to see your doctor - blood in stool needs to be investigated rather than assuming its from hemorrhoids(piles). This video shows how to manage hemorrhoids, I hope it helps you ua-cam.com/video/qTcb55KOK9Y/v-deo.html all the best

      @Melissa66677 I hope you don't mind me asking did your constipation start after your hysterectomy? Have you performed a transit time test?

    • @Melissa-me
      @Melissa-me 11 місяців тому

      @@michellephysio yes a what?

    • @michellephysio
      @michellephysio  11 місяців тому +1

      @Melissa66677 transit time is the time it takes for food to go through your digestive system. You can try eating some whole (cooked) corn kernels, a couple of spoonfuls is enough and see how long it takes for them to show in your stool.
