How To Practice A Song - Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy

  • I believe the best way to practice a song isn't just by trying to belt it out.
There is a specific sequence that works best.
And it doesn't really matter what style you want to sing.
That sequence involves starting out lightly (I don't mean airy, I mean little volume).
Work up gently how the vowels feel most comfortable in your throat.
(In my singing course "How To Sing Better Than Anyone Else" I thoroughly walk you through this process).
It's best to start with vowels first (no consonants and nothing to choke off the throat when singing like hard consonants such a G, NG, B, P, M etc.).
Then little by little you can start to add more weight (volume) to the song.
Start with one verse at a time. Don't jump to trying to sing the whole song through.
Once you have mastered the first verse, move on the first chorus. (vowels only).
Continue this until you have built up enough stamina to easily get through the song.
Determine what your Tessitura is. (the most esthetically acceptable and comfortable vocal range for a given singer).
You can grow your voice to increase your range, but it is best to start here.
So again, once you have mastered the vowels, gently start adding back the consonants.
You will find that you are training your throat to stay open so it is not "closing off" when you re-introduce back these vowels.
When you get really good at this, you can start bumping the song up one tone, then two tones and so on, to increase vocal range.
    I hope this was helpful.

My singing teacher always says to me "sing only the vowels -A E I O U - of th lyrics. It has to sound like a single stream of air".
The best advice ever. It's not easy, but it pays.

@@kentamplin Glad that i stumbled across this issue :), or "issue". Just glad that i found myself doing it without knowing why. Felt good, relaxed, and empowering by just humming along some songs, that usually are in a high key performing. As you said, the truth's in the singing. And yes, ofcourse i've bought your course. I have adjusted my gaming chair, so that i can more easily reach the feeling for my abdominal core muscles in singing. Greetings from northern Sweden

He just gave away the key to the magic of being able to sing more than one note all night... KTVA. ⚡️
I hear (and sing with) singers who are constantly struggling with consonants and transitions, and these ppl are considered good singers at their pro level (they get praised by ppl every night). 👏🏼

These videos are really fantastic. I have taken lessons from a classically trained professional opera singer, and he has said a lot of the things that Ken says here 🙂I haven't taken Ken's course, but I bet it's amazing. I would say, though, that it's 10% lessons and 90% practice 😁

You're so right singing a song that fits your voice and your tone, I can all most bet you there's a lot of older professional musicians singers out there that didn't think they was going to be playing the same music 40 years later when they wrote it because if they have known that they probably would have wrote the song in a lower key compared to the original key that it's in.

Hello and Good day to All! I am new to the channel and in leu of listening to music itself, I find myself lost in appreciation to a genuine vocal teacher who speaks in a language that can actually be understood, and English is my native language.
I am in awe of the knowledge and experience Mr. Ken Tamplin brings to the table. Mr. Tamplin's vocal academy has renergized my interest to further my knowledge of singing techniques of all genres. Mr. Tamplin's Vocal Academy UA-cam page, along with his website and forums, provide more information on vocal techniques/awareness to help an individual better themselves as a singer, as well as to further understand singing as it pertains to the artform of historical expression of which it formed.

In one of your older videos, you mentioned that singers don't begin their songs with their strongest notes.. well except for while singing "past the point of no return", and instead work their way up or down to their difficult notes. Sometimes, I have to remind myself to try difficult songs with my neutral voice, before doing any tweaking. Just returning to the speaking voice is usually enough to regain control. For my first well liked Sweet Child o Mine recording, a friend asked before fully listening why I made a baritone cover, but really I was using each mini chorus to slowly climb to higher notes, then by the time I got to "now, now, now.... etc," I was able to go as high as needed. Now, I practice a lot of high note singing. Used dreamed a dream for my recent round 1 entry of the competition I am. I've heard many say one cannot learn to sing on their own, but I am thankful that you, Dr Dan, Mr Stoney, and others are willing to continuously provided us with the sources we need, to improve at our own pace, or even satisfy curiosities.

    • @maxkaddell
      @maxkaddell 6 років тому +1

To pitch in on how I practice songs, I at least memorize a verse or the chorus, then as I go for a walk, I say each individual words several different ways. If there are high notes I need to hit, it sometimes helps to make my vibrato sound like a highly accelerating vehicle, how it starts slow and deep then gets quicker... kind of zip up a word to find the high tone, if that makes sense.

Great tips! Your course has been one of the best purchase decisions I have ever made. It explained things so well that I now understand what my other voice teachers were trying to explain to me - thanks so much!

I love to sing, but when I sing, I've always felt like "I have no idea what I'm doing"...
this is certainly the channel I've been looking for.
it's brilliant how within a short amount of time you're able to convey so much knowledge and information, with lots of details.
the nerd inside is very pleased, seriously. haha
I'm looking forward to watch all the playlists!
    thanks in advance :)

Sara, what you say is very insightful. So many people that think they are "cursed with a bad voice" simply do not know how to properly operate their instrument, which in this case, is the singing voice. If I handed a saxophone to a great "natural singer" and asked them to do a wailing solo, they probably wouldn't have any idea how to work it, and it might not sound so good. At all. It's a myth that you either are born a natural singer or you're not. There is a HUGE area in-between those two extremes that learning REAL vocal techniques that great singing depends upon can bring a lot of skills into the picture. The more you learn, the better you can become, with true, focused practice. There are all kinds of bogus "vocal coaches" who do not have hundreds of examples of them demonstrating difficult singing. What they "teach" you won't help. What I teach you comes from a lifetime of seeking the best vocal teachers in the world and sorting out who was right and who was not. If you LOVE to sing, then LEARN to sing. Yes, it CAN be taught. And THEN you will have a much better idea of what you are doing. MUCH better! 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
      I'm glad you found me!

I'm glad as well... for a long time I've searched around the internet and only found vague explanations from "coaches". It's not like I sing out of tune, however, I'm sure I am not using the full potential of my voice. why be an "ok singer" when we can be awesome singers, right?
anyway, I'm very excited to learn! also, thanks for taking the time to write such an inspired answer

Thanks Ken! At first I felt discouraged to sing since I have zero clue on pitch and tone. But you make it easier to understand.

King, the more you learn about how the voice works and how to operate it, the better you can become at singing. You have to spend some time sorting it all out and practicing, but you can get a lot better!

This connected the dots for me Ken. I find myself desiring to sing what is within my range..anything else becomes a distraction to enjoying and expressing from my heart. Learning about what is going on in the throat is so helpful. You are a great teacher
