  • How To Do Vibrato With Resonance - Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
What is "Vibrato" for singing and why does it matter?
A true natural vibrato is the "final resting place" of resonance for a strongly supported, whole tone, "relaxing" into a state of oscillation, creating maximum resonance.
There are many debates as to whether the oscillation of vibrato should be above the whole tone or below it.
This author is a firm believer the the oscillation must be "below" the whole tone since its purpose and function is a relaxation response. Going above the whole tone would not promote a relaxation response.
Vibrato is a very personalized "signature" for the voice.
And there are many different types of Vibrato.
It also can be a key to determine the health of one's voice.
And/or it also may be used as an "effect" for different styles and types of singing.
As we explore how to become a better singer, vibrato plays an important role in the resonance of the voice.
Let's first explore the different types of Vibrato for singing.
    1) Diaphragmatic vibrato is characterized by diaphragmatic pulsating during a sustained tone. This type of vocalizing generally produces a tremolo effect which is not healthy and hard to get away from, once it has been embedded. The breath should flow evenly and not be subject to a "pulse" of the diaphragm. This is usually heard from the "herculean" roles of a big tenor or a big soprano role.
    2) A Vocal Trill vibrato is often taught through through vocal training of matching pitch to the ones played either on piano or guitar usually in a half or full step toggles from the original pitch, to a half step and back again. This can result into a "Wobble" which becomes very wide and slow and directly affects absolute pitch. Its oscillation is slower than a healthy vibrato, which has much less pitch differentiation.
    3) The Laryngeal vibrato, or being manipulated from the larynx (voice box) is also not a good idea since the voice box should stay stable while singing. Its task should not be to manipulate vibrato. This is often referred to as "Gospel Jaw" or "Jaw Vibrato" where the jaw moves up and down. This can be witnessed in singers such as Whitney Houston or Steve Perry.
    4) Caprino vibrato in Italian means goat-like (wiggle) or "little goat." This is a fast and nervous-sounding vibrato. Many artists have made this sound famous such as Stevie Nicks or Manhatten Transfer (with a quick "horn stab" sound)
    5) A "Tremolo" vibrato has a faster oscillatory rate and is usually "wider" than a natural vibrato. Artists such as Aaron Neville have made this sound famous.
    6) A "Natural" vibrato is where one can hold a note and "relax" into a state of oscillation. It also provides for greater volume when singing without adding pressure (resonance).
Some believe that vibrato just "happens naturally" and requires no vocal training. This author does not believe that. In order to become a better singer, everything we do with our voice, if we are looking to do it correctly, requires vocal training.
So whether one is looking to increase vocal range, learn better vibrato, and more, it is a good idea to get with a quality vocal coach and get competent vocal lessons on your journey to great singing!

I think i started adding vibrato as a young child singing cause i don't remember having to learn it. I grew up in a musical family and guitar and singing came more naturally to me i think as a partial result of being around it so much.
That being said, i can't stand when people suggest that you HAVE to be born into music/born with talent, to be a good musician.
It's just not true....what people lack is passion, not talent. If your passionate about anything music related, you CAN obtain the skills you need because these techniques are not magic fairy dust. It's real, proven stuff.
I know a guy who started working on his vocal technique just a few years ago and the difference is amazing. He couldn't even sing in the right key half the time when he started. BELIEVE IT GUYS!!

Same goes for everything probably. I'm a graphic designer and since I remember amily friends and other people were saying I'm "talented", when in reality I just loved drawing since I picked up my first pencil and I wanted to be better and better at it. :) Now I'm getting old (30 already), but decided to get back to guitar and this time try not to be insecure about my voice, so I want to make it as not terrible as possible.

You are so talented at explaining things that make sense to someone who has no professional training like me and I’ve improved so much just by watching/listening to you. I'm also so grateful for this attitude that pushes back on the idea that it should just come naturally. I always felt that learning how vibrato works can help with understanding where the breath is sourced to sing properly, maybe a little like seeing and understanding the end-goal to work up to

Well, that’s very enlightening. I learned vibrato through study cause i love the way it sounds and I’m really obsessed with it. You really have to be relaxed, otherwise it will never be natural. You just can’t “vibrato” if you’re over singing or beyond your vocal range. When you talked about doing it beyond the line, well I can’t think how this can be natural as well, but natural is just the best way for you to be consistent when doing something. That’s what i think at least. Another great video from the Master :)

This is the best and most detailed video on vibrato I have seen so far. So helpful and detailed, especially the explanations of the different manufactured vibratos and the “relaxed” vibrato, which feels better to me personally. I have used the manufactured vibrato techniques to warm up my vocal chords which I found helpful, but the relaxed vibrato from the diaphragm is the ultimate goal when singing. It just feels more natural. Love your videos!!! Thank you!

My professor in college was teaching the ENTIRE CHOIR CLASS diaphragmatic vibrato combined with vocal trill. I don’t think this is a thing to do for choral-style singing, but please advise if anyone knows why they might’ve been teaching that way. I’m very curious.
I’ve gotten into this bad habit of diaphragm oscillation, but I’m finding it SO MUCH MORE comfortable to slip into a more relaxed and natural vibrato. Now it’s just a matter of time, self awareness and gentle reminders to keep breath support even and steady. That muscle memory may take years to unlearn, weeks… not sure, but I’ve got the rest of my life to find out:)
    Thank you for this video.

@@kentamplin Ken thanks so much. In my case, not yours, those who cannot do teach. So I was teaching my wife, a former folk singer and I was able to explain vibratto this way.
SHe was lost, so I will send her here.
She watches battle of the bands and I told her Ken is a genius, compared to reality tv shows,.
I told her "by moving the diaphramg (stomach or controlled breathing-as you say and demonstrate) you are effectively changing the lenght of the hollow body of a resonator, like a violin or guitar, so the resonant frequency changes slighty and the volume/efficiency of the new resonant note becomes dominant.
As a physicist, the explanation makes sense but to any non science person I think it would be ridicioulos
      From Wikipedia:
"Because amplitude varies directly with sound pressure (A = k1P) and sound pressure varies directly with distance (P = k2d), such that amplitude also varies directly with distance (A = k1(k2d) = k1k2d), the amplitude of the sound as perceived by the listener will be greatest when the speaker is at the point in its rotation closest to the listener and least when the speaker is farthest away. Because the speaker is constantly moving either toward or away from the listener, however, the mechanism's rotation is constantly affecting the listener-perceived sound's wavelength by either "stretching" the wave (increasing wavelength) or "squeezing" it (decreasing wavelength) - and because frequency, i.e., pitch, is inversely proportional to wavelength, such that increasing wavelength decreases frequency and vice versa, any listener for whom the speaker's motion changes the sound's perceived amplitude (i.e., any listener whose distance from the speaker is changing) must also perceive a change in frequency. "

KEN, Many people confuse _"tremolo"_ w/ _"vibrato"_ , one is a change of volume, the other is a change of pitch, but you can also combine the two, as in Steve and Whitney, I think that is what they did, whether they realized it or not (syncing the two IS A FEAT in itself! ) I think that the Jaw movement is more of a tremolo effect - changing the *volume* , considering that your vocal folds are responsible for pitch, but I may be wrong, you are the expert on these things.
I am also a violinist, and the vibrato on a violin (probably the MOST expressive monophonic instrument compared to the human voice itself) is both above AND below the TARGET TONE. (Watch any vid on youtub of a violin solo at 25% speed when they do a vibrato). The Target note is grounded, then you "ease" into a vibrato and slowly increase the rate of the vibrato both ABOVE and BELOW the pitch until you are "shaking it" as fast as your muscle form can accomplish it. (similar to you @ 10:46) VERY DRAMATIC EFFECT! Maybe I will experiment on this concerning my voice (never thought about it before).
I listen to violins, blues harps, saxophones, etc.. and then I try to imitate the solos just using vocal vowels, good practice (I think). Add a few consonants and you get SCAT SINGING!!
*_ANYWAY . . Happy New Year and GODSPEED._* But most of all *THANK YOU*

I get vibrato when I sing most of the time but I can turn it on or off - but sometimes when the breathing and pressure is spot on I notice the difference. It’s slower and more controlled and feels like it’s happening without my choice whether to or not. It’s much better

First time I had a real vibrato was on accident, I was recording into my phone at 4 in the morning trying to be quiet but just loud enough to produce a proper note and this angelic feeling vibrato hit me out of left field and startled me. I kept listening back in awwe like, "that sounds good!"

Lol I love the fact that if you can step by step follow this recipe/formula
Diaphragmatic breath + vowel + relaxation = oscillation
I can get it going when I follow this recipe.
Thanks Ken my coach encourages the contrived method of the toggle
To help relax the larynx perhaps freeing it so you can learn to relax it not sure what but
When I added your formula after practicing the contrived method voila it happened right away

When I reach that point of "natural vibrato", it feels like my voice is starting to betray me and my natural instinct is to try to control it. It reminds me of a saying one of my old vocal coaches had: "It's amazing what you can accomplish when you learn to get out of your own way."
This is extremely difficult to overcome, and I wonder how many other singers have run into this.

I have not had any singing lessons, other than from books and videos. I can do vibrato fairly well. I am excited to find out how good of a singer I can become using UA-cam videos because I will be in a tight spot $ wise for a while. Ken's videos and some from others have been very helpful. I have been practicing for several months and can sing the following songs decently: Anyone - Demi Lovato, I Dreamed a Dream - Le Miserables, Memory-Cats and Till Then My Love - Matt Monro. Singing a wide range of styles has helped. Ken's advice about taking care of yourself physically is spot on. I do not have a vehicle and get around by bike. I live at 6,000 elevation and have do plenty of hill climbing on my bike and have gotten in great shape. I am sure that not drinking alcohol and not smoking any type of substances is a big plus. I noticed that since getting in better shape, I can sing louder and hold notes as long as some professionals. I do want to get a good quality, reasonably priced microphone to plug into my laptop. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Bruce Dickinson was my biggest inspiration when I first started singing, and so I've aways had his vibrato style from emulating him. Are you saying that it's unhealthy in the sense that it could cause damage? It's always been very natural for me, personally, and I've always had that kind of vibrato.

    • @kentamplin
      @kentamplin  6 років тому +1

It's a wide vibrato, and not really a relaxing one. It's a lot of work. It won't hurt your voice, but it's hard to get out of that habit if you do it a lot. You kind of get stuck there.

    • @lucasthompson1650
      @lucasthompson1650 6 років тому

Jordan Kowalski: if it comes that naturally to you it probably isn’t unhealthy or dangerous, provided you follow all the other rules (breath control, diaphragm support, proper warm ups, etc) but if you listen carefully to Dickinson before his first couple of solo albums, compared to, say, “Fear of the Dark” and everything since, you’ll notice that he took the classic ol’ “air raid siren”, modulating amplitude and pitch at the same time, and learned how to modulate each of those characteristics individually (like what Ken is showing in this video), and with a lot more finesse, which has ultimately made him a much more versatile singer.
Bruce learned this (and more) by getting a good vocal coach around that time - so you’re on the right path if you’re watching Ken’s videos! Up The Irons!🤘🏼
Ken: 9:02 “Bruce Dickerson”? Really? Your videos are great, and you’re a phenomenal vocalist … but, seriously, c’mon … “Dickerson”? 😆

    • @Mohamedmifxal
