That's the right way to explain the use of this bike. Love your tech reasoning.
Currently I'm on the Energica EVA. And that charges pretty fast. Mostly 17-19kW from 10-90%. So I was doubting the slower charge on the LW. The higher range and the 10-80 method might just get me in the same charge interval.
The L1/2 charging is very disappointed though. I can now take 3kW and charge in 4 hours at work or home. These take 11 hours. It's not to frequently for me. However way less practical. Also when you would need to skip a broken CCS charger.
I am very tempted to get the LW. Did a test ride and it suits my style better. Technicaly and pricewise I might be better off with a SS9+. Those do more miles nowadays albeit on longer charge too.
Hard time to justify me wanting that LW.

Jack, a quick solution for your regen kill switch is built in already. Simply disable the primary riding profiles, set two identical riding modes - one with and without regen. Have those two the only active profiles, then tap the ride mode to simulate the kill switch you’re referring to

As for the battery padding, that makes a lot of sense and I feel was a smart move on HD (or Samsung?). In long way up, the engineers pushed the padding down to extend Charley and Ewans range. Based on the TFT shown in the final episode (when they finally fast charge), it seems as though they ran close to 15kW usable for the trip (14.7kW based on what I could muster from the limited info). Would be cool if those extra kW could be used on the production bikes, however I wouldn’t want that at the cost of battery lifespan. When the LWU livewires we’re altered, it was done knowing these would only be used for that trip and never again, so the risk was worth the reward in that regard. Thanks for the insightful video!

You hit it on the head. Yes charge 80-90% and go and repeat and go. A lady rider road a LW1 500 miles on a wet highway in one day. I think Harley Davidson and other people are being very small minded because they don’t understand that Livewire and Energica electric motorcycles can get you across the country. What a great real world video of living with the Harley Live wire.
I think this bike is something that would make a great commuter bike if your job was near a charging station or especially had one there.
I completely agree the app should tell you when the bike is charged and especially if the cord was removed or the bike messed with in any way.
I am extremely impressed that Harley Davidson has created this real world electric motorcycle.
The cornering abs is a amazing safety feature as well as the engineered in traction control system.

Supposedly zero owners with bikes that have 15,000 mi on them say that there is definitely noticeable degradation. The padding is definitely a good idea on these bikes. Most other manufacturers are telling you the total capacity in general, but some manufacturers tell you the usable capacity such as Harley Davidson which is quite nice. I've heard a few mixed things about the capacity but 15.8 kW is pretty close to what many people report including when they are doing reviews like you and Harley gives them the bike for a week. The one thing that you should have mentioned in this video is the charging system for AC charging is pretty sensitive on this bike and that using an extension cord can actually damage your onboard charger and cause you to need to replace it. Harley is pretty good about that though and they will generally cover it under a warranty only. If you've done this multiple times, will they make you pay and you'd probably have to do it three times or more before? It's not a warranty issue and it's you just being careless with your bike.

  • @wavshrdr8452

Nice vid. Interesting to see your stable. I have some of the same, notably the Z H2 and Streetfighter. I'll take the Z for normal road road any day though. Regarding the number of cells, if they actually did what you are suggesting (not saying they did or didn't) that is a lot of extra weight to carry all the time just to manage the degradation of the batteries better. On the highway not as much impact if steady state cruising but in the city it would hurt efficiency and whenever you do a lot of accelerating and braking.
As for your charging approach, I've used this approach on my Teslas and other EVs for a long time when using L3 charging. The batteries can tolerate a higher rate of charge when they are more discharged. On my Teslas it makes a huge difference. At a low start of charge (SoC) I can be charging at about 1000 miles per hour (~16 miles per minute). So even a 5 min blast at full speed of the charging can add 60-70 real world miles. Unfortunately the Livewire has lower voltage architecture so can't really suck down the electrons as fast. Keeping in the lower SoC level for charging is easier on the battery as well. Still worse than L2 or L1 charging but at least you aren't hurting it as much.
If going on a long trip, or a long ride, I'd also suggest using the ABRP app (a better route planner). They have an alpha version of a profile for the Livewire. It can help you optimize your stops for minimum recharging time by putting in where you want to go and if you want to make fewer stops but more time, or more stops but less time or what makes for the quickest trip.

    • @freedomiseverything
      @freedomiseverything  Рік тому +1

I've done more research on the LiveWire batteries since I did the video. It turns out, I was completely wrong. The LiveWire is using prismatic batteries. They are more expensive, but they run cooler and are much more durable. I'm thinking about doing a video on the batteries sometime soon.

What did you think of the stand , I find the serrated bottom can grab on corse tarmac so the bike doesn’t lean and engage the lock on the stand , it hasn’t caused me any problems so far.

I agree that the side-stand is messed up. If you’re not careful, you can easily drop the bike. It needs to lock in without having to put weight on it. The Harley side- stands are all kind of screwy too. I guess it’s part of the personality of the bike!…

What was your total cost to do that many miles? Thanks

    • @freedomiseverything
      @freedomiseverything  2 роки тому +3

It cost me $15.05 to do the 248 miles in the video. This is because I got burned at an EV-Go charger in Santa Monica. Since this ride, I have gotten ripped-off at other chargers too. There is a charger in Azusa that even tacked on a $2.50 parking fee!
As of March 14, the bike has 4,012 miles on it. The total electricity used is 722 kwh. That's 5.55667 miles per kwh. I always ride in a custom mode with full power, fastest throttle response and full regen. I always ride hard, never shrink from a drag race and usually set the cruise control for 85 mph on the freeway.
I charge at home for $.14 a kwh. There are some level 3 chargers at the Santa Anita Mall nearby that charge for free. Most of the publicly available chargers are about $.40 a kwh. That's 2.5 cents per mile charging at home and 7.2 cents per mile fast charging at a public charger.
As a cost per mile comparison, I have five other bikes in my garage:
      Kawasaki Z h2 - 25 mpg
      Ducati V4S Streetfigher - 35 mpg
      Yamaha MT10 - 39 mpg
      Suzuki B-King - 36 mpg
      Kawasaki Z125 - 97 mpg
Premium gas at my local Chevron station is $6.37 per gallon today:
      Kawasaki Z h2 - 25.5 cents per mile
Ducati V4S Streetfigher - 18.2 cents per gallon
      Yamaha MT10 - 16.3 cents per gallon
      Suzuki B-King - 17.7 cents per gallon
      Kawasaki Z125 - 6.6 cents per gallon
LiveWire One - 2.5 cents per mile charging at home, 7.2 cents per mile at public charger
In most cases, the LiveWire is going to be cheaper than the Z125. Plus, the LiveWire is a lot more fun to ride...

Great stable of bikes. LiveWire is disappointing though. Limited range and slow charge times are going to hurt sales. Traditional motorcycle riders are not going to bite. I’m a Tesla owner too so I get the whole range/charge issue. Level 2 and DC fast charging should be a lot faster on the bike. No more than 10-15 minutes.
That EV Go charger raped you at about $1.00 a kWh. Ridiculous.
As to battery pack size, you’ll see that many Teslas have an 80 kWh pack, but only about 72-75 kWh usable, with the car having a buffer like the Livewire appears to.
