  • I did 1,000 miles in 4 days on an all-electric Harley Davidson LiveWire, so I thought I'd do a quick-fire review listing 12 things I love and hate about it. How's the headlight? What's the real-world charging time? Will it get you da hunniez? If you're thinking of buying one, give this a watch. Even if you're not thinking of buying one, watch it because it's just nice. Thank you.

    I'm not a biker but I've been driving (and public charging) EVs for about 7 years. Firstly, you're right, the UK charging infrastructure is rubbish due to a lack of good policy and incompetence. If it was taking an hour to charge the bike, something was wrong. A typical charge for that bike should take about 10 minutes. The LiveWire battery apparently has a usable capacity of 13.6kWh which means it would theoretically charge from 0%-100% in under 20mins at a 50kW rapid charger (like the Ecotricity charger, which was taken over by Gridserve btw). But, you'd normally only charge to about 80% on a rapid charger and not from zero. The maximum rate of charge is determined by the circuitry in the bike and there are currently no EVs that I know of that can take full advantage of a 350kW rapid chargepoint. If the LiveWire could, you'd be looking at a charge time of around 1 minute!
    Like a lot of people, I'm surprised that HD has been so quick to enter the electric arena but they've done the right thing. As a side note, and as a non-biker, I can't wait for all bikes to be electric simply for the reduction in noise pollution. What bike enthusiasts called 'sound' is, to the rest of us, just the incredibly intrusive droning noise of someone practising scales on a trombone.

    Great review. Tested one today in Paris. Got off my Zero FXE and onto the Livewire One. It felt so stable and planted and was so much more chilled than the 135kg zero. I love my current bike and mainly ride in heavy city traffic but I think I'm going to take the plunge and get one. The Del Mar is about to come out and one was available to sit on, but I prefer the looks of the livewire and it left me itching to ride it more. I don't usually do long trips so I'd be happy charging it overnight in my garage once a week, if that. The only downsides I felt were slightly tiring on the wrists and I felt like I'd got off a horse after one hour but I'm sure I'd get used to it.

    Very interesting review. I test rode one the other day here in the states, and it was an amusing experience to say the least. The bike was great, but there was zero love or interest for it at the dealership. It was sitting alone in the showroom with like 20 miles or less on it. Only one single model and color in a showroom with probably 50 other bikes. In the time I was there, even with a very large crowd of people milling about, no one-- I mean no one but myself-- was checking the bike out at all or asking questions about it. Harley riders are not part of the EV crowd at all. They are still using ancient technology for nostalgia and image. How is the LiveWire viewed in the UK? Any more interest for it there?

    • @AdventuresonZero
      @AdventuresonZero Рік тому

      I think your experience/observations are whey Harley decided to spin the EV models into a separate division - they are now targeting a younger demographic that is more conscious of electric vehicles. Even now at the end of 2022, I still have people approach me that there are electric motorcycles - even though they have been around here in the states since 2008 with the first zero motorcycle. This is still the very early stages of all this EV stuff, it's nowhere near the public domain yet - maybe in 3-5 years it will be more mainstream.

    Your short coming list is subjective. Your charging networks are not the bikes fault. Attention is bad?? Right, it is first generation technology. Right it is a Harley, they are all expensive. We owners love ours, and yes, it’s not my only Harley. ⚡️🇺🇸😎🇺🇸⚡️

    • @VladTheInhaler121
      @VladTheInhaler121 3 роки тому

      It’s not a subjective list at all, he said clearly, the bike can’t fast charge on more powerful chargers. It’s first generation tech for Harley, other E-bike/car manufacturers have decades of experience and electrical expertise. Harley are great but not perfect and there are definitely shortcomings to owning one now. Range, price and weight all come to mind, just to start.

    what does it cost to charge?

    • @AdventuresonZero
      @AdventuresonZero Рік тому

      depends on where you're located. In most places, it costs more to run a refrigerator than it does to charge this bike overnight. Here in the US, most of my full charging sessions were around $4-5 USD, but it's quite rare to ride all the way to empty, then fill all the way up - not the most efficient way to travel on an EV motorcycle

    The LiveWire has a small battery with a useable capacity of just 13.4 kWh.
    Clearly, it needs double the capacity, at least. With improved power density, this will be available, in a few years . . . .
    A 7 kW home charger should charge the LiveWire from 0-100% in about 2 hours.
    It looks like Harley have limited the maximum charge to about 15 kW.
    This is less than one third of the capacity of 50 kW chargers.
    Harley probably did this to stop you cooking the battery.
    If the LiveWire could accept the full 50 kW then it would go from 10-90% in 15 minutes. The last 10%, from 90-100%, is always very slow. Even on a mobile phone!

  • @guywright1833
    @guywright1833 3 роки тому

    It's a 7KWH onboard charger so unfortunately that's the limit. Also if you only charge to 80% you would be out of there twice as fast. Charging is very slow passed 80%

    Those damn dummy SOFTWARE engineers at Harley Davidson and their shabby charger codes could NEVER figure out the complex algorithms required for electron transport with a 350 KW charger!
    Which is pathetic, cause all that's required is to download extra RAM from the cloud and encrypt your optical GPU until javascript segfaults the virtual CPU.

    Two things that just kill the electric motorcycle concept is of course the battery and charging issues. Battery doesn’t last long enough, ie. range, and it takes too damn long to charge! For electric bikes to really make it they need to fully charge in 30 minutes or considerably less preferably, and it needs to last twice as long or more, 200-300 miles at actual highway speeds 70-80mph. Of course the technology for that, if it even exists, is a ways off at this point. Like you said; at this point the electric motorcycle is a toy for the rich.

      The Energica electric motorcycles charge in 30 mins, however the range is similar to the LiveWire. It won't be for a few more years before the battery tech advances to achieve that range.

Since it’s electric cars don’t hear you but, you’re there. For safety can they put speakers with module with different sounds of motorcycles so that cars they know you’re there. The riding position really depends on height of the rider. I'm 6'1 and I lean forward just a bit, yet still an upright position. I find the seat to be a little on the harder side, especially the rear pinion - my girlfriend finds it uncomfortable. The suspension is fully adjustable though, so it improves the riding comfort significantly.
