Great Fruit Leather Recipes - Waste less food

- Fruit leather - or fruit roll-up - is a great way to utilize ripe fruits in a form that will last into the off season. This is awesome because it means you can continue enjoying the benefits of fresh fruit and veggies without paying a lot for imported ones when they're out of season - especially if you make the fruit leather raw like this it maintains great nutritional value.
Mum has been making fruit leather for as long as I can remember, she is very careful not to let any of her precious homegrown organic produce go to waste - and fruit leather is one of the best ways to use all fruits/veg - no matter if they are ripe/mushy/have imperfections ... so it's a really sustainable and great option to waste less food. Mum's plum fruit leather is my favourite, she doesn't sweeten it so it's quite tart but I love that! - her plums finished a few months ago though so I won't be showing that in this video.
Something I would really recommend for this is going to a local organic orchard and asking about their 'seconds fruit' -often the fruit that is imperfect will go to waste or at least be sold very cheaply - and this is a great opportunity to buy a bunch for little, chop out the bad bits and turn it into fruit leather!
The fruit leather recipes I'm using
Peach
3 cups chopped peaches
1 Tbsp vanilla extract
1 tbsp chia seed
1 tsp cinnamon - half this if your not as big a fan of cinnamon as me... it's quite strong this way.
Apple & Blackberry
3 cups chopped apples
1/2 cup blackberries
a small handful dates dates or tbsp maple syrup
1 tbsp chia seed
Kiwi and spinach
3 cups kiwifruit chopped
1 cup spinach
1 tbsp maple syrup
Puree up your ingredients, spread over a greased dehydrator tray or greased parchment paper (not 'waxed paper' as I say, that would melt!) on an oven tray - 1cm thick, and put in the dehydrator for 1-2 days depending on the settings or 6-8hours in a 40C oven - until the surface is smooth, dull and not sticky to touch. Cut the fruit leather up, roll in parchment paper or store as is in an airtight container. should last a couple of months like this - you can freeze it if you want it to last about a year.
You can use any fruit and most veggies. If you use settings that are equivalent to air-drying then this is raw fruit leather and keeps its nutritional value. Some people cook their puree first - this kills bacteria/enzymes which can give it a longer shelf life but it also destroys some nutrients, cooking can also make the flavour stronger.
Chia seeds add to the texture and nutritional value of the fruit leather. I love adding them, even in small quantities to add some omega 3's in there. Here are my favourite chia seed; www.iherb.com/n....

I'm Persian and we eat fruit leather all the time! In Farsi it's called Lavashak and its my favourite snack
how do u make it? do u use a dehydrator?
+H K It's sun-dried, I believe
+H K we boil the fruit and add salt. Usually it is laid on a plastic cloth in the sun to dry.
+H K it's also usually sour...not sweet
Youre means Lavashak?
If everybody were like you, the earth would be a much better place.

Btw in Georgia (country) this is traditional snack. And we call it here - Tklapi :)
Yay! I'm in Christchurch and our peach trees are just overachieving right now! I've made chutneys, bottled a whole heap and fruit leather sounds like the perfect thing for the last of them! We had everything happen at once: plums, apples, grapes and peaches....
Greetings from NorCal! I like your idea of adding spinach to fruit leather. The peach leather recipe sounds yummy too. Can't wait to try.
most relaxing voice to listen to on the internet!!!
It is beyond easy to make this. Great video. I've been looking for unique recipes, and came across this video. I recently got about 100 star fruit from a family members trees which isn't usual here in florida to get so many. Anyways, we were thinking we'd have to freeze some, but I also made pineapple star fruit leather, with a few strawberries, and it was WONDERFUL! One of my favorite ways to not waste fruit! I also make mine with no added sweeteners or sugars, accept maybe honey sometimes. So they're a treat you can feel good about.
I just received a dehydrator as a gift & wanted ideas for fruit roll up types of healthy snacks...so glad I found your video, great tips & beautiful fruit leather colors! Thanks so much for sharing :)
Hi, Ela! I want to thank you for the dedication and love you put into your videos. they are really helpful. I'd never heard of fruit leather before and i find it very useful and original, so thank to your mother as well. I will definetely be trying these recipes and innovating with different mixtures to create new ones. thanks again!
In the U.S., when I was growing up, we found this wherever we found candy, but it was called a fruit roll up.
the colours of these are gorgeous!
What a great way to sneak veggies to the kids. Love it

I will definitely try this recipe I just purchased a dehydrator. The fruit roll-ups will be a good snack especially during my physical activities and when I travel. Thanks so much for sharing
great flavor combinations. beautiful fruit leather! thanks! :-)
This is great yet again Ela :-) Quick tip for everyone... Google 'Appliance Calculator' and add in your country or state (for example I'd currently do appliance calculator nsw), this is excellent to do so you don't get bill shock if you're using any appliance for a long time :-)
The reason I'm sharing is because I've personally being tossing up whether its worth buying a dehydrator or to just use my oven instead... This helped me decide. Hope you're all well. Thanks again Ela. Emma from Australia.
+AppreciateTheEargasm Great tip! Xo
Cheers Ella :-) Question... One thing I was struggling to suss out is how much energy an actual dehydrator uses? I don't suppose you have any idea do you? Don't go to any effort... I was just curious :-) Thanks again for sharing all your wonderful recipe's. Emma from Aus.

+Shyah Mills Thank you Shyah! :) Great to hear X
We get loads of fruit from the neighbours but never end up being able to finish it, my mum pulled out the dehydrator because she really liked some dehydrated oranges her friend made. Going to be dehydrating fruit and vegetables and making fruit leather. Unfortunately our dehydrator only came with one fruit leather sheet.
Good idea......loved the video
You are such a beautiful soul. Keep doing what you're doing, girl! X
+Rhiannon Phillips Thank you! XX
This is awesome! Fruit grows amazingly in New Zealand
Awesome, Ela! Would you please let me know what kind of dehydrator that is? Or if you have any recommendations as to what kind I should buy? I've been thinking about purchasing one for a while now.
Your voice is kinda soothing and you got a nice garden.
Hey Ela, thanks for the vid. I made a bunch of fruit leather in my new dehydrator and it's great. One thing I don't see talked about much is how bad fruit leather can be for your teeth. I was wondering if you had ran into this challenge and had any suggestions on how to deal with it. I've got a jar full of dried peaches and plums as well as several fruit roll ups and I'm kinda afraid to eat the stuff now after dealing with the effects of the sticky concentrated sugar on my dental health.
The same as any type of sweet/candy; it's not meant to be consumed all the time and definitely not as a meal.
Basic common sense, I would say.
This is so cool I am going to have to try this!
Looks so yummy!!❤
I reckon i would be munching on some all day!! 😂👍
I love fruit leather and so does my toddler. Great video!
