    The weird thing about knowing a pathological liar is: even when people get suspicious and don't believe them anymore, they carry on with their lies and most people around are too awkward to call them out.
    We had one at college and we all felt ashamed by proxy (in German we have this term "fremdschämen"). She created more and more of a mess around her until she felt that she had to leave and start again somewhere else. But I doubt that she stayed anywhere long-term before she messed up again.
    It's terrible, because pathological liars create a mess around them and screw up their own lives while it all just doesn't make any sense.

      I just finished a podcast on Spotify called Conning the Con (highly recommend if you're into true crime and/or podcasts), and your story reminds me of the childhood background stories the podcasters managed to dig up on the conman, Andrew. “Most people around are too awkward to call them out”
      Well that’s one hell of a generalization, isn’t it? I have a pathological liar in my family and you better believe I call her out 100% of the time. Because I do not have time for that BS in my life.

    • @murphychurch8251
      @murphychurch8251 2 роки тому +5

      @@christiewright1457 Ah, and you calling them out 100% is more representative to the general public? That is actually just a sample of...well, one person. My experience with a pathological liar was: the whole school at university, it was a small one, but let's say 50 people altogether, staff and students, were in awe about her ongoing tales and felt extremely awkward (some of us did discuss this) but nobody ever openly told her that she was just talking shit. Because nobody wanted to be that rude person. Yeah, you may judge us for not telling her, but I can only speak for myself as to the reasons: I noticed that her lies were ridiculous (for example, her father had a different over-the-top exciting profession each week), but also that she was really stressed to keep up with her lies. She was a deeply disturbed person and I didn't know how to deal with that, so I just ignored her. She didn't harm anybody at that time or tried to get money out of it as far as I know. She just kept on telling unbelievable stories about her life, until she left for another city because she felt at least as much awkward as we did. How you react to someone who's misbehaving may depend on the country you're in (like, English I've witnessed to take a lot of shit without complaining directly) and the social surroundings, whether you have been harmed by a pathological liar and are not completely taken aback with this behaviour because it's new to you. Yes, I dare to claim that the majority of people luckily are not familiar with the behaviour of pathological liars.

    I know Coco, she's been to my house several times. She was friends with one of my family members. I remember when she first told my family about her background, I just kept thinking, wow, this girl has been through so much. It didn't cross my mind that she was lying, because why would anyone lie about something like that? The second and third time she came over, though, I started to wonder if she was telling the truth. You know how in a book when the main character goes through back to back to back trauma, so much so that it doesn't feel realistic? That's how it started to feel with her stories. She kept telling us that she was raising money to build facilities for other human trafficking survivors to live in, but then there would be all these complications or forces working against her. She told us about guys she had dated who turned out to be abusive or manipulative or stalkers. She told us she couldn't use her real name because her mother was still trying to find and kill her. She told us about severe chronic health issues she was dealing with due to being trafficked. She also told me all about how she was going to be on America's Got Talent, that she was shooting several music videos, etc. Every time I talked to her there was some new crazy development in her life, either something that would make me completely pity her or think that her life was exciting and enviable. But around that time people started suspecting her, and the last time my family member saw her, she totally ignored them and ghosted the rest of us. I feel sickened by the whole thing. We really considered her a friend and tried to help someone who we thought was a survivor.

    • @MeribelMGoldwin
      @MeribelMGoldwin Рік тому +3

      The thing is, survivors actually have at times a pattern of abuse because we are programmed to accept abuse as love. So until we heal, we will repeat the patterns of behavior that caused us to get into abuse in the first place. This is why I believed her cancer lies since abuse takes a toll. And the multiple abuses also could have been possible. Unfortunately, everything is a lie and I wasted so much time doing what she recommended for me to truly recover.

      in 2019 i helped a teenage girl with bone cancer. her mom and i were acquaintances. i drove 2000 miles to be her free photographer in florida. paid for my own traveling expenses. i also drove her and her mom to hospitals multiple times for their appointments. i was like her butler for a 5 months. donated them my time and bought her family presents.
      then i was busy dealing with my own depression for a month. the cancer patient and her mom got angry at me, they didn't care about me at all. i literally was having suicidal thoughts but they didn't give a crap. they were angry that i was away for a month. the cancer girl texted me and ended our friendship because she thought that just because she got cancer, that people are supposed to help her, and donate her money. and if people don't, they are horrible.
      then 2 months later the girl died, because her cancer came back. what i learned from this experience? i no longer care about people with terminal illness.

    I used to be a pathological liar as a teen. It's so weird because now I never lie at all, probably because it was exhausting and stressful to keep up. I would read stories in books and then talk about them like they happened to me. I made up certain situations to make myself a victim. I had a whole group of friends that was completely made up and each had very distinct personalities and lives, all characters from different stories. I was abandoned by my dad and my mom was extremely emotional and unstable, I was kind of on my own my whole life. I liked the attention my stories would get me because I was lacking it at home. I didn't know why I did it then but now I do. It was soooo stressful I would be so afraid I would get caught in a lie I couldn't sleep at night. I even catfished someone and had to completely ghost them after lile a year of talking because I was lying about everything. It's crazy because now I literally NEVER lie now and have no urge to at all. I think I realized how horrible the emotion of shame was at an early age and decided I wanted to do everything possible to avoid that feeling, which has been a good thing because I'm a genuinely nice person and make pretty good choices. As someone who is very into psychoanalysis now, I'm fascinated with my past self. I believe it was simply trauma related, rather than actually enjoying lying. But when you say it may have been wishful thinking, I relate to that. I wished all the lies I was telling were true, I wished I had those friends and that life

    Thank you so much for this video on Coco, Dr. Grande, I suggested her to you, but I am sure I am not the only one. I have been fascinated by her story for a while. Her FB page was filled with "perfect" beautiful pictures of her and she traveled around the country speaking about her "human trafficking past", she even did speaking tours with Elizabeth Smart and gained some notoriety. Any time anyone would question her story~ a person or media, they were criticized for not believing her as a victim/survivor. I think her looks and perhaps singing talent pulled people into her deception. The human trafficking lies lasted for years and I think would've eventually caught up to her, but ultimately it was the cancer lie that was only out for a few weeks and the GoFundMe money from it that led to her inevitable downfall. I appreciate so much your take on this.

    Thank you for this. As to your point at the very end Dr. Grande, this was the hardest story Lynn Packer had to make a video for and one I had to write. After he consulted Ed and Elizabeth Smart and I spoke with a few actual trafficking victims, it had to be done. She is a perpetrator, not a victim. The trafficking victims were livid not about her lying, but the media grabbing the most sensationalized story that sounds like it was lifted from the rejected Lifetime movie script pile. Then if course the media wanted more stories "like Coco's and Elizabeth Frazier and Eliza Cuts/Siep/aka Eliza "my daddy ran for governor of Illinois" Morthland. Yep. It's another. We received probably thousands of various threats, accusations and so on, which is why no one wants to come forward. Since the mainstream media finally vetted her story, Chris Hansen took her story down, etc. Now dozens of people have come forward and were truly exploited. Hundreds of hours talking Coco from suicide claims, visions, seizures, etc. This is what these people went through, not donating fifty bucks, but sponsoring her, flying to and from Germany. It was and is a abuse, mental terrorist.
    Because their stories are so grandiose and despite these online lunch mobs and the true crime culture of ripping straight from the headline and not the details.
    After we exposed her story as hoax, and mind you, she was in the process of using one of our stories to claim she was one of the victim's in our Operation Underground Railroad investigation into multiple sexual assault allegations against operatives. Likely to get a U Visa.
    The full extent of her abuse and fraud is just starting to be understood.

    Hey! I find your videos incredibly interesting. I wish you would do one of the Va Tech 2007 attack, it's so weird how not many people cover it on UA-cam. Please 😭❤

      I don’t see a lot of coverage on any mass school shootings from true crime UA-camrs never even realized till now.

    • @jdsaintly
      @jdsaintly 2 роки тому +1

      This is likely because these kinds of crimes can be motivated by a desire for fame. A lot of news channels (if they cover it at all), will not include the face of name of the attacker. Giving the shooter their moment in the spotlight is what they want and can motivate other individuals to commit similar offences. Many channels choose not to cover them for this reason.

      I agree but Dr Grande has an analysis on many of the high profile cases. Such as Mandalay Bay, Sandy Hook, Columbine, Parkland, Aurora Colorado. And it would be interesting to hear his thoughts on Va Tech.

    • @jennyfinn2447
      @jennyfinn2447 2 роки тому

      @@jdsaintly The method of mass murder is their motivation for fame. The chances of these individuals killing in general is high. The media coverage of Columbine is what changed future media coverage for mass murder. All a potential shooter has to do is watch or read the information on Columbine to gain that desire for that type of murdering fame. VA tech is the first high profile school shooting after Columbine and it is the worst till this day if you exclude tragedies like Mandalay Bay. There has been an incredible decrease in serial killers and a heavy increase in mass murder after the date 1999. These individuals are now choosing different outlets based off the international fear at the time. In the 70s 80s and even some of the 90s, it was serial murder. There are many cases of serial murder and mass murder before the 70s, but media. News outlets. Television and radio created this desirable phenomenon amongst these types of murder. Nevertheless, the desire to kill with some individuals will always remain, the methods of which they carry out their attacks can change and vary depending on what's shocking and creating fear across the world.

    But how dare anyone challenge the behavior of anyone right now? There's always an ignoramus lying in wait with a bullhorn to call you some sort of "TERRIBLE PERSON" or "______-IST" (fill in what you like, and I don't mean pianist or chemist). So what do many do? Sit in fear-driven silence letting it happen, even if it's dangerous, delusional, unhealthy, or in violation of others' well-being. Great topic, Dr. Guru.

    I can't believe the sheer number and variety of quality videos you continually put out Dr. Grande! ❤️ I hope you get some quality time for yourself in there somewhere also, but it's beautiful the channel you've built here! I can't help but be such an avid Admirer, as I'm sure most who are lucky enough to find your channel are! As far as this video- I don't understand how people think these huge outrageous lies won't catch up to them. I agree that she did this more for the attention than the money- her past shows that. I think MANY of us have known a Pathological Liar to some extent, and it's like they get a rush or a "fix" almost from the attention and sympathy they get from a lie where they are a victim of something terrible, and once that has faded they often need to come up with something new, and often something even more horrific that gets even MORE sympathy and attention etc. And on and on until it becomes just too unbelievable and convoluted to maintain. Expert quality Analysis, I always learn something or gain insight from each and every Dr. G video I watch! Maybe it sounds like a lot, but I feel like Dr. G helps SO MANY people, and it's sad there aren't more level headed wonderful people out there like Dr. Grande to listen to!! Thanks again for gifting us with such quality Education and insight! ❤️❤️❤️
