Dr. Grande. This case is very interesting to me. I served 8 years in the U.S. Army as an Infantry Rifleman (2001-2009). I deployed to Iraq in 2005 for one year. This type of made up hero worship is actually MUCH more common then people think. The VAST Majority of people who serve in the military as non-combat Soldiers leave the military and make up MANY MANY stories. Most claim they were Infantry when they weren’t, claim they were Rangers, Special Forces ect…. Its actually very sickening. They then have people believing they were great war heroes when they never did a damn thing dangerous. For all of Iraq & Afghanistan if you were not in a Combat Arms job (Infantry / Combat Engineer for example) - your chances of being injured were like 1 in 10,000. Yet most of the Soldiers who were in the rear with the gear drum it up to be much more than it was. I wasnt Special Forces (one of my regrets). But I was a Grunt and i’m proud of that. Todd could have avoided all this trouble if he answered his true calling. Anyone that creative should have been writing independent comic books, "The Company" could have ended up being optioned for a movie!
He tried to involve everyone in the plan. That's where he made his mistake. If he'd just waited for social media to be invented he could have opened a Facebook group for recruiting created a UA-cam channel to chronical his planning and preparation start a go-fund me for supplies and logistics then make several Tik-Toks during the act. With a bit of luck Raid Shadow Legends and Bang energy would have sponsored the whole thing.
They were my friends. I loved Carol. She didn't deserve to die. At 16 Todd convinced me he was 18. We wrote amazing woke songs together before it was cool and played the Satyricon back when Kurt and Courtney were playing music. He was easy to believe. He looked like he belonged in Duran Duran. He could sell a glass of water to a drowning man. I have been grieving her death forever. I will never get over it. Now San Quentin is clearing out Death Row, and he is out of mulligan appeals. Maybe he will land in Texas where Sister Helen Prejean can't save him. Worst part is I still remember him fondly from those days before even though I hate him to the core for what he did after the band split in 88. That's how easy it was for him to dupe so many. Kind of timely lesson to learn about blindly following con artists and grifters.
My ex husband and I were friends and roommates with them in Bend. We learned of this when we moved back to Cali. I was so hurt to hear about Carol of all people why her then we heard the why. So knowing Todd, it didn’t surprise me. It just proved that my instincts to move out were right. I hope he fries soon. Did her family ever get her ashes? That’s always been the one thing that’s pissed me off about the other side of this story.
I remember watching a documentary about this case. Norman, the one who killed Todd's wife Carol, had a son who was in his custody. I believe Norman was not going to kill Carol because he was very fond of her however, Todd told him if he didn't kill Carol, "the company" would kill his son. This is what pushed Norman to go ahead with the murder. Imagine telling your son - (who knows you are the only person in the world he has) that you are an idiot that is going to spend basically the rest of your life as well as most if his life, in jail. My heart ached for Carol and her unborn baby, whom she was so excited about giving birth to as well as Normans boy. I do not remember his age at the time.

Todd, Carole, Lynn, Dean, Norman an the Irish Republican Army…I had to listen to this four times until I could figure out what was going on! Update. I still confused after listening four times. I’ll try again tomorrow
I was best friends with Carole in high school. My dad was a psychotherapist and pegged Todd as a sociopath within 5 minutes of meeting him at the Galleria in Portland in 1986 or so. Some day I might write up that part of the tragedy. Todd was cheating on Carole with Lynn back then and they almost broke up.
Maybe Portland, OR should consider changing it’s slogan - Keep Portland Weird. Todd certainly took it to heart. Full disclosure - I live in a town who’s slogan is We Are All Here Because We Are Not All There. Enough said.
I'm from Ireland, oh no do I have to start worrying about Snippers from US!!!. As always brilliant analysis. I just don't know how you manage to be on point each and every time.
A couple important aspects in this. Todd’s wife was pregnant at the time of her murder and Lynn had 2 kids both extremely young and with dean at that time.
As a family member to this terrible man there are quite a few parts missing. Like he wanted to kill this man because Todd and Lynn were having an affair well before the hotel. She was so close to having her son which would have been Jesse James, the shooter made sure to have a bullet hit the baby. She died trying to protect her unborn child. The sick fuck was released years ago. Todd is where he belongs yet should have been gone long ago.
