He’s definitely intentionally carrying the interview. It’s either because he’s afraid Crispin will be too weird and awkward or Crispin was nervous and told him to. Probably the former.

Think of the best, most celebrated actors of the last, say, 40-50 years: none of them (except for the odd chat-show circuit) have been on a TV series or worse, a sitcom - people like Brando, DeNiro, Jack Nicholson, William Hurt, Harvey Keitel, Gene Hackman, Kevin Spacey, the late, great John Cassavetes (director and sometime actor, who would whore in some Hollywood pix to finance his indie greats), Seymour Cassell, Dustin Hoffman, and, yes, even, Brad fucking Pitt. (I could say Tom Cruise), but every movie he's been in has been shit -lots of times cuz they were just bad movies, but also because anything w/that motherfucker in it is rendered unwatchable and de facto shit!!! Hell, I've never seen Kubrick's final film, Eyes Wide Shut- why? Because Tom "Mr Shallow scientology fuck" Cruise was in it and no matter how good the rest of it was, that closet-queen (I mean, come on, at least admit yr gay, for chrissake? Why do you think he can't stay married -besides being a total scientologist FREAK? - cuz he's not into women! (duh))...

Conan really did a fantastic job here, great interview! Unlike other hosts (famously Letterman in the '80s and '90s, and later also Kimmel) Conan clearly understands that Crispin Glover had previously shown up to Late Night 'in character' to promote his work rather than himself. To accommodate this, the segment starts with the promotional movie clip that is normally shown at then end, and the entire first half of the interview is a genuine conversation about the movie. Around the halfway mark (3:50) Conan then 'calls out' Crispin Glover for dressing exactly like his character in the movie, even straight up asking "what's going on here...?", while also making it clear that he appreciates the effort. Crispin Glover then seems to drop all remaining traces of his 'Willard' character for the remainder of the interview, in which he talks about a few odd artifacts of bygone popular culture that he owns.

Letterman generally likes playing along with avant garde acts to fool/mess with his audience. His previous work with Kauffman for example. Glover plays a character whenever he's on letterman's show in order to get a reaction... He also really likes messing with movie corporations who expect actors to go out and promote films with witty banter or relaying little anicdotes. So comically he takes that to the extreme by creating a strange interview which people will talk about or remember. Letterman is just the type of person who loves playing along and be the straight man in the act (just really to see how far they can go). Will Ferrell likes to do the same things, but more as one off gags.

Crispin Glover is a method actor of old school tradition as well as a performance artist. Dave didn't understand that he basically showed up "in-character" very much in the light of Andy Kaufman before him and actors such as Jim Carrey (MTV Movie Awards, I believe) and others.
Unfortunately, the issues he had with Back to the Future 2, and them refusing to cast him in the role because he wanted a pay increase, and then the production team subsequently using a makeup mold of his face and having another actor wear it burned a few bridges. BUT to Crispin's credit, the Screen Actor's Guild made it a rule to never be able to use the likeness of an individual without said individual's explicit consent.
The weird interviews in a pre-internet era (at least as we know it today) the eccentric behaviors he projected, and his arguments with the producers and director's of Back to the Future made most industry executives believe he was either A, extremely eccentric and on drugs, or B, extremely opinionated, difficult to work with, and a potential drug addict as well.
Crispin's a legend and his moves were deliberate. It's just a shame that Dave, who's usually great at playing along (minus the interviews with Joaquin Phoenix), basically shat on Crispin multiple times. Thing is, for as hard as Dave was being on Crispin, in his awesome way, he was giving it back 10 fold. Dude's a legend.

    • @geinikan1kan
      @geinikan1kan 8 років тому +13

+Begley's Shizzle Well said. But Glover's argument with the "Back to the Future" franchise is really important, even more important in this age of digital reproduction. What they did with prosthetics is now possible with digital images. The last "Fast and Furious" brings back Paul Walker with his family's blessing, but who knows? Should an actor have rights to her/his image for films? It's a serious issue. Glover is a brilliant actor. Not a bad thing to give use of an actor's image to the actor. What if producers started swapping computer bodies like avatars?

Scott Crichton His infamous interview with Letterman was a publicity stunt for a movie that he was working on, he just never let Letterman in on the bit. Put into context that interview is actually really hilarious in a different way.

    • @-bdl2696
      @-bdl2696 9 років тому +6

Scott Crichton I think a good bit of it is due to Conan's approach, Letterman is a bit more direct/matter-of-fact about things, while Conan is more jokingly and self depreciating which gives his guest more confidence to speak out more.

    • @StylinRed

Scott Crichton because Conan controlled him perfectly and did most the talking

    • @pg9193

Scott Crichton that's because Conan filibustered the hell out of this interview, which was the smart move.
Plus, Conan is much quirkier and more open-minded, and overall decent

Loved him in Jim Jarmusch's Dead Man starring Johnny Depp. Crispin has a cameo as a coal tender on a locomotive, and gives what appears to be an exhausted, rambling soliloquy, but is actually a foreshadowing of Depp's characters' journey.

I'm not very familiar with Crispin, but comparing this interview with Letterman's, I feel like to he was purposely acting very strange (uncontrollably laughing) in Letterman's interview, and seemed authentically odd. But here, he's a completely different person, in contrast very well spoken. He must just be a great actor, and sometimes want he's audience to question his sanity.

+Navolt I know this is an old comment, but Crispin Glover is a method actor of old school tradition as well as a performance artist.
*BUT* to Crispin's credit, the Screen Actor's Guild made it a rule to never be able to use the likeness of an individual without said individual's explicit consent.
