    Crispin is very good at playing characters that act awkwardly. I think a lot of people misunderstand his technique. He is a good actor, it's just that he plays characters in such a way that makes them seem like they are nervous, uncertain or unsure of themselves. I love it...

      Not necessarily emo. Just that one friend that is antiestablishment but in the worst and most pretentious way. Because they cant understand that they're limited by their youth and general inexperience in life.

      Where's the contradiction? You could nail a Texan accent, but if you gave a cringe performance it would still be a cringe performance with a nailed accent.
      What people find bad isn't the accent. It's what he's doing with it. And what he's doing with this face isn't helping especially. :D

    Great movie. I love the scenes with the teacher. Bizarre vibe most of the time with a real spooky score to march the film. I miss the 80s.

      He was in character for the movie Rubin and Edd that got delayed 4 years so it didn't make sense. Letterman was in on the whole thing, always was.

    This seems so relevant to me and just to the current world situation in a way. We have been at war SINCE 1945 with Russia so I guess that never changes. This film is so good

    The portrayals of these characters are much more similar to the people I grew up with and how they spoke and behaved than anything John Hughes ever directed. We watched Pretty in Pink and Sixteen Candles and Breakfast Club but we lived River's Edge.

      Yeah same here. Got nothing against John Hughes, but I also grew up with people who acted like the group in River’s Edge. To me they’re a bit more realistic than the kids in Hughes’ movies.

      @@FranticAnimations I agree, Crispin was terrible in this movie. Even Keanu had much better acting and some people make Crispin out to be some genius actor. Though I love him in Back to the Future of course.
      The other guy in this movie, the killer John, was just as terrible.
      Both badly cast for this movie, it could have been better. Dennis Hopper was amazing of course

    People knock Glover's performance, but I also knew people like this. I read his character as a likely closeted gay man who was also clearly (as the film shows) a speed (amphetamine) freak.

    I don't understand enough about the technical craft of acting to be able to articulate exactly WHY this is a great performance, but it just is. Crispin Glover is a genius. This is intentional oddness and totally iconic.

      Agreed, I love the way it both clashes with but also elevates the tone of the movie at the same time. I think the way he played layne was such a bold choice but, despite the great casting all around, the movie wouldn't have been nearly as good without him.

    I was one of the apprentice editors on the movie so I got to see these scenes come in as dailys. Then, got to see the movie come to life. I never thought anybody would be talking about it over 20 years later. Thanks, this has been a fun read.

    i just finished watching him in 'bartleby' (also here on youtube. he, and it, are amazing!) it's so hard to believe that bartleby and laine were played by the same person. crispin glover's really incredible...what a chameleon! he's the greatest actor of our time. :)

    You know what made this movie so great for me? It reminded me of my youth. our little group used to dress and act the same way and we were the outcasts at school. Also i cant leave out the soundtrack it was the same music we listened to at the time.This was the first movie i ever heard something like slayer in. Thanks for some memories!

    I'm amazed at the comments here calling River's Edge "funny". Really?
    Yeah, great it is, and the characters are deeply disturbing and audaciously acted, but "funny"?
    It's a real-life police case about a group of teens who covered for a friend who'd murdered his girlfriend, none of it for any particular reason. They simply had absolutely no empathy or humanity in them.
    A super film, and Glover is a genius actor in it; but if you find it "funny", you'd better get some therapy, because you a

    These are not John Hughes teens that are upper middle-class kids like Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, or others having aspirations to be one of them. These kids are gritty and real lower middle-class kids from broken or barely stable homes. All of them aren’t even 18, but already substance abusers. The character that killed the girl’s is drinking a six pack in the morning and keeps on all day and night drinking and the others smoking lot or popping pills.
