Crispin is very good at playing characters that act awkwardly. I think a lot of people misunderstand his technique. He is a good actor, it's just that he plays characters in such a way that makes them seem like they are nervous, uncertain or unsure of themselves. I love it...

The portrayals of these characters are much more similar to the people I grew up with and how they spoke and behaved than anything John Hughes ever directed. We watched Pretty in Pink and Sixteen Candles and Breakfast Club but we lived River's Edge.
Yeah same here. Got nothing against John Hughes, but I also grew up with people who acted like the group in River’s Edge. To me they’re a bit more realistic than the kids in Hughes’ movies.

I don't understand enough about the technical craft of acting to be able to articulate exactly WHY this is a great performance, but it just is. Crispin Glover is a genius. This is intentional oddness and totally iconic.
Agreed, I love the way it both clashes with but also elevates the tone of the movie at the same time. I think the way he played layne was such a bold choice but, despite the great casting all around, the movie wouldn't have been nearly as good without him.

These kids are gritty and real lower middle-class kids from broken or barely stable homes. All of them aren’t even 18, but already substance abusers. The character that killed the girl’s is drinking a six pack in the morning and keeps on all day and night drinking and the others smoking lot or popping pills.

Great movie. I love the scenes with the teacher. Bizarre vibe most of the time with a real spooky score to march the film. I miss the 80s.
