Crispin Glover on Letterman - 3rd Appearance (1990) - Good quality
Вставка
- Опубліковано 3 сер 2012
- The air of mystery still surrounded his 1st appearance. Glover tries to explain and give hints that it was actually Rubin Farr who was on his show the first time, but Letterman is annoyed with his long story and cuts him off. Rubin Farr was Glover's character in the cult classic "Rubin and Ed."

Holywood really missed out not casting this guy as the Joker in a Batman movie.
Insomniac Jack I agree
There’s still time. I’m sure there are 18 or 19 more joker movies yet.
I don't know, honestly as erratic is he is, the way he acted after the BTTF movies, smh
wow ur right man! i just realise it now
@@kbanghart He wrote a pretty good essay about trying to expose Stephen Spielberg as a pedophile and how it was ruining his career.
Holy smokes Crispin Glover is brilliant. He tried to jump to the record promotion to avoid Dave's assumed "apology time." Then he lets Dave shut it down with a smart ass remark like "when you have your own show you can set the agenda." So the ball is back in Crispin's court and he hijacks the time segment drawing out a bogus story which forces Dave to essentially go back to Crispin's agenda. Dave got beat at his own game. Bravo, Crispin. Bravo.
Matt stallings I know. He was gonna let Letterman have it.
But he ends up just sounding as eccentric as ever. Very strange.
In what universe is Glover brilliant? He is just another drug addicted Hollywood celebrity.
He is very talented and brilliant in this universe
Wow you're such a moron. Crispin ended up looking like a fool here...an absolute fool, an easy target for letterman but I do believe he is smarter than you cause you seem to think he's brilliant...he's an annoying jumpy moron
Crispin Glover is one of the most under appreciated actors of our time.
Everyone hates him in Hollywood and out he’s a crazy pretentious prick.
The River's Edge. Thats all.
@@Ambushw23 idk him personally, obviously, and if he IS a pretentious douche bag then I know I won't like him.. but, from what I've seen,he's a good actor
I would prefer not to...
@@GDaws he was a massive pain in ass for the director on back to the future so much they ended up not hiring him for the last movie
My left ear loved this.
Not really.
One thing I've noticed about Crispin is he's really good at not answering questions he doesn't want to answer.
and Crispin of course had all the power and didnt need the money. He was DESPERATE here. This was not Shakespeare. Not clever. It was him clinging to a 5 min slot.
@@plowe6751 it's not just this interview
Holy shit... Crispin cut into Letterman's time he was going to use to talk about "the kick" with that irrelevant story that went nowhere, then Letterman decided to cut it by promoting his Album...which is what Crispin wanted in the first place to avoid talking about The Kick. FUCKING. BRILLIANT. He thought of that so swiftly!!
Yeah perhaps you’re right. Makes you wonder, was letterman in on it?
I don't know if Letterman was in on it, but he knew how to play along. Notice that most of the awkward strange interviews were on Letterman? Andy Kaufman, Harry Parkoe (something like that), Joaquin Phoenix, Richard Simmons, etc. I know Richard Simmons was weird everywhere, but funniest with Letterman in my opinion.
I think he was about to say that the guy who kicked Letterman was his friend, Reuben.
It’s irritating 😠 hearing someone talk in circles
@@magictransistorradio4933 you are correct:) Also, Harvey Pekar, my friend...
Crispin is a genius. He's one of the best actors of all time, yet he's been blackballed from Hollywood because he wouldn't let them screw him over; he sued them and won for using his likeness on Back to the Future.
That was forever ago. He was not blackballed he’s been in plenty of films since then.
@@marsoblivi0n945 Yeah, plenty of low budget films that nobody has ever heard about. He was even reduced to having a bit part in one of them. The guy's a genius and all he gets are crap roles???? Name one decent movie he's been in since Back to the Future, and the answer is ZERO. There haven't been any.
@@terry7893 Willard and countless others. Dude you’ve just shown everyone in text that you only watch basic ass Hollywood movies. Tons of movies are just as big and more respected that never run through Hollywood propaganda. The substance of the movie not how much media coverage it gets. Crisping has said himself he gets offered bigger roles for Hollywood movies but There trash. Majority of depp best work is indie films and more creative projects. Why? He chooses to do so. Because that’s were the soul and artistry lay cheek to cheek. Crisp in Glover chooses to take meaningful projects. Not many Hollywood films have the respect of people that actually enjoy serious art. It’s always been this way. With your logic I can tell you probably never get to see real movies. You think they don’t even exist. Hahaha. Crispin is a wonderful talent I agree.
@@marsoblivi0n945 Marvelous movies are often times the ones you want to see over and over again, like Star Wars, Back to the Future, The Sting, etc. I didn't see Willard. Was that a remake one about rats? If what you're saying is true then that's good for Crispin and everyone, like Eric Clapton who left Cream because they were becoming too commercial. I love weird movies that take turns that I didn't expect. Like Schwartzenneger in Total Recall. It's too bad if Crispin is doing movies that most people have ever heard of or will ever see. He EASILY exceeds Jim Carrey (who is very good of course) and many others, but that's like saying someone had a better voice than Elvis. If the person only did one song....then maybe it was a fluke, a one hit wonder, while Elvis was great for hundreds of songs over 3 decades.
I hope Crispin is doing great, he deserves it. His acting was so far out in front, it was pathetic.
@@terry7893 yes and Willard was one of his greatest roles. It’s one of the few times a remake surpassed the original. But I agree 💯 I would love to see crispin in more roles over these hack actors we have now. He was light years ahead of everyone else and just as diverse as phoniex or depp.
Haha my favorite part is the end when Crispin says "I'm glad to have you back" as if HE is the host. Goodness, he's good.
It wasn't the other way around?
I'm glad to have "me" back
You tried to Kick me In the Head" Crispin:" This is very a very interesting subject , a topic I really want to talk about and II know that I have a lot to say here, And once we get on to that subject I know I'm not going to stop talking about it I know You're not going to want stop talking about it I know..." BRILLIANT. Crispin could have been a lawyer if he weren't so ridiculously independently eccentric .
he said I'm glad to have been back.
Norm MacDonald said it best "Once you realize that the key to Late Night with Letterman is that you're the joke, you are on top. The audience is in on it, and Dave is in on it, so you need to get in on it too, or else it all makes no sense."
Thanks for clarifying that, because it worked on me,he's using the controversy sells tactic
I love that Letterman just cuts him off in the middle of a story where he was setting up that his doppelganger was the one on the show lol
Letterman is an ass and is rude, which comes of as funny because he says what some people would think
I love how much he highlights that Letterman is a jerk.
That's three times Glover outsmarted Letterman. In a row.
No question about that.
Crispin ends it saying, "Thank you. I am glad to have you back." 🤣
Well, it wasn’t really hard. I'm starting to wonder wether Letterman is actually just stupid.
You realize it's all sketched out in advance, right? They're improvising off of each other, and in reality, Dave is a big fan of Crispin's. It's theater. With actors and writers and producers. Dave knows exactly what "Clowny Clown Clown" is and he's already seen the clip. They're pretending, because they're actors, and it's very entertaining.
He is just crazy. People read too much into him.
There are actors with chiseled jaw lines, then there's Crispin Glover lol :D
I love Crispin, he's brilliant and hides behind the aloof character he presents. He's not the LEAST but impressed with being on Dave's stage - he cares more about how the audience perceives him, not Dave!! & Dave knows it. Each of his interviews the audience loved CG more than Dave
I don't like Glover at all. I think he's incredibly annoying and so did most people that worked with him.
I'd say the audience is on Dave's side. This made me like David less
He SOOO looks and acts like his dad, another great actor 👏👏👏👏

Letterman went to the record, right when Crispin's story was getting interesting! 😆
Missed this one... glad to finally see it...
Letterman cut him off the moment before Crispin was about to say "I was playing a character dingus!" That's funny. Crispin is a weird guy. There is no hiding that.
"i thought it was going to be something stupid but it's not" LOL
Crispin Glover is very underrated. He definitely should've been cast as the joker or the riddler.
I think Ledger and Phoenix would be smoking a cigar now and saying "ok, this should be fun....not" . Glover was a comedy actor, he was no Oscar"
Here we see a man who is so intelligent it's very hard for him to articulate what he's trying to say
Stop it letterman, he was playing a character 😂
This dude as Joker would be awesome.
well he coudnt be worse that the last few tries.
He has more of a Riddler vibe though

I mean, most would just laugh. He probably broke something when he got home
I loved Crispins bogus story lol. Just Brilliant!
Back in 1097 I was at my Uncle's house out in Los Angeles , California. My Uncle worked behind the scenes in the business for as far back as I can remember. Like when I was really young and into the Incredible Hulk he not only got me Lou Ferrigno's autograph , he actually wrote me a letter in green marker signed as The Hulk. He had Bo and Luke Duke sign my birthday cards. These were the type of things he did for me when he worked at CBS. Later in his career he had Sydney Pollack personally seek him out for help to start Tri-Star pictures. He's worked for HBO until he finally ender up at Entertainment Partners as Senior Vice President. So my Uncle had a pretty decent career behind the scenes in the business. So he also had a little bit of clout when it came to helping someone who wanted to be an actor. He wasn't no Steven Spielberg who could pull Jo Blo off the street and give them the lead in an award winning film of the next summer blockbuster. But he could get someone their SAG card and introduce them to the President of a casting company were you could work daily as either an extra or a bit role where you would make union pay (so you can afford to make a living) and where you're foot is in the door and your chances of getting noticed just sky rocketed. I used to tell my Uncle that I wanted to be an actor. He always told me to stay clear of the business. His idea of success is a Brad Pitt , Sean Penn , or Leo. He would tell me how just about all the waiters and bartenders in L,A are struggling actors. One time we were at his house ( a modest home in the Hollywood Hills) and I started to say I wanted to be an actor. He started to give me the spiel about how tough it is to break in the business and the waiter situation. And then he lowered his voice and told me his neighbor was an actor and that he hardly ever works and how pathetic he was. So I peeked to see who his neighbor was and it was Crispin Glover.
That’s so cool! You are so lucky!
There was no Los Angeles in 1097
@@Ronkyort0dox Just some scattered settlements of the Tongva and Chumash tribes.
You buried the lead on that one haha. Interesting story.
I was off in the crusades that year, missed everything.
Remarkable that so few commenters grasp what is going on here. This is, ultimately, a collaboration. Nobody is trolling anybody. It's not exactly scripted, nor entirely planned. But Letterman knows roughly what he's going to get (and likewise knows exactly what is going on) and delivers his own schtick just so. I don't really like Letterman as a person, but he's playing a crucial and intentional role in making this encounter so joyous and fun. It's basically balanced beautifully between a battle of wits and a collaborative riff. Quite brilliant given how different their styles are.
Indeed. So many people wish to turn moments like this into a competition. Its not. Its planned improv, two professionals bouncing off each other.
Exactly. It's not as if Dave didn't know what "Clowny Clown Clown" was going to be when they scripted the episode. It's theater. Fun theater to watch, but to believe it's real and that Dave is surprised by the clips or the props or the guests themselves is just silly.
letterman wasnt that smart..he just wanted girls. He hates himself now for it.
He looks like a GQ model but is so crazy and very intelligent?
I'm Ron Burgundy?
My type of guy.
Such a fascinating...entertaining ..guy!!! All the best Crispin!!!...loved you in Back to the future...cheers from NZ!!!!
Crispin owned Letterman after Letterman made the smart ass remark. Freaking cool.
Letterman had him on at least 4 times that I know of. Letterman loved having him on.
This man was beautiful
It must be one of life's greatest pleasures to annoy Letterman.
Rumour has it He's still trying to tell the end his story to this day
This guy would be an awesome Joker . He already has the look and sound naturally . People need to get talking about that maybe being a reality . Good work . 👍🤔
Even though he's way older now , the original Joker was an older dude .
This man is the OG Troll, absolute mind fuck from beginning to end.
"Of course you do" seemed like a moment that Dave genuinely found funny.
To everyone saying Dave got owned, or Crispin got owned, this is sketch comedy with writers and two gifted performers both in on the joke. They're owning us, the audience, if we can't understand that. And we need to understand that, because if we think entertainment like this is real, then there's truly no hope for us when political rallies and more serious propaganda come along.
i dont see it, given the trajectory post 90 of both men.
Crispin is a bloody genius
He was so funny as Andy Warhol in The Doors lol
Funny?
Now I know the formative essence of Rubin and Ed! Terrific movie
His jawline can cut zinc with just grazing it

His friend Rubin.... now I finally see how Crispin was creating a diversion. I see what people mean now that he was trolling Letterman
Linda’s ITC Channel Also a reference to his movie Rubin and Ed about burying a cat. A slick way of pointing out how Letterman didn’t know the movie that Crispin was in during the first interview. The clothes and shoes he was wearing when he kicked at Letterman was his costume for Rubin and Ed.
@@honeyzephyr7542 Letterman was worked three times and had no idea he was the rube.

My left ear really enjoyed this clip.
Letterman: Oh no, not this guy again!

Letterman should let him talk without interruption, people don’t understand that when you mock them during a speech, the narrative changes midway and the truth doesn’t come out.
I love him🖤
My left ear enjoyed this very much. Right ear not so much.
Me too. I thought there was something wrong with my earphones haha
Crispin was basically having fun the first interview. Phoenix did this 20 years later and he knew Letterman would bite hard on it, even though when i saw it i totally knew he was doing a Borat act
yeah but Phoenix was a multi millionaire oscar nominee, CG was desperate.
My last ear appreciated this interview
A HUMBLE GENIUS
Most of the commenters on this video need to get a room with Glover. 🤦♂
He was BRILLIANT in Twister.
He decided to go come in the back door. My left ear liked this.
Nothing like the good ole mono days
When Lot said to G-d: “surely there isn’t one soul worth saving in Gomorrah?”, Crispin Glover is that soul in Hollywood.
Okay. I get it now. In this interview, he was referring to a character he played in a movie called "Rubin and Ed", who was also the, um, interesting guy from the first David Letterman interview.
A few people in the comments get it. This is organized improv. Like Letterman or not, he's a smart man who knows exactly what he's doing. Same for Glover. Letterman did it with Cher, Madonna, Oprah... all planned to some extent, everyone knew what they were getting out of it... except for much of the audience. It's just entertainment. And, if anything, these two are trolling viewers.
nah, i suspect CGs agent blew his brains out after this disaster.
Very cool actor!
Letterman is absolutely the best. Will come out of nowhere and make you laugh but man he would make you feel so small and little at any moment
He is gorgeous... And hilarious!!
He was also in Back to the Future 2, I don't know why that movie doesn't get as much love.
No he wasn’t technically. They used footage from the first film and then used a double for the scenes in 2015. Hints why George McFly is dead in the alternate 1985.
@@lookdoug1516 Yeah right, I bet next you're gonna tell me they used the old castings of his face to make prosthetics that they'd film from afar and from weird angles to hide the fact that the actor looked like a ghoulish doppelganger or something.

Wow ... I noticed the same thing about the kid about whom Glover was talking: the "Rubin Farr" guy in his class, that is, before Dave unceremoniously cuts him off. Also interesting is that, on the 1st appearance on Letterman, when he had his hair long (was that even his own hair then? It almost looked like a wig) & was all decked out just right for the Rubin Farr character he plays in Rubin & Ed: the hair, the glasses, those platform shoes & that t-shirt, but that appearance, on Late Night, was in, I think, '89 or right around then, but Rubin & Ed didn't come out (as far as I know) until 1992; not 100% positive of that, but my copy of it has "1992" as the copyright date or year of release, whatever. Of course, I'm not uneducated in the whole movie-making biz; I know of several films (I say "several" cuz I've heard or read about x # of movies which were made in a certain year, certain time frame but either never got released at all or sat on the shelf for several years, waiting for some kind of distribution deal to pop-up or whatever the thing is. Like Crispin mentions, Rivers Edge had just come out & that's what he was on the talk show circuit, promoting. But, since he was dressed in his Rubin character's outfit, etc. it makes you think doesn't it? Maybe he was in the midst of making Rubin & Ed. Jeeezz... now I feel like watching it again.
And those bellbottom pamts
He was still in his George McFly mode.
Hmm, The intro music.. Kung Fu fighting.. 😄 it is referring to Chrispins first visit to Letterman..

The Rivers Edge. 🥰
Such and interesting guy. Sounded to me like he was alluding to an Andy Kauffman / Tony Clifton-like alter ego. In that previous appearance he was dressed up and acting like the character from his film Rubin and Ed.
It's like everyone knows Glober is just playing a character to entertain the audience, except Letterman.
there's a fine line between brilliant and maniacal, this might be it.
