I look at it two ways. Randy's death in SCREAM 2 showed that the franchise wasn't afraid to kill off the most popular character and at the time, when the films were releasing, it just showed that the stakes were high and at one point in SCREAM 2, it even looked like Gale and Dewey were toast. HOWEVER, in another world, I'd liked to have seen Randy get the girl, have his hero moment and then get killed off in SCREAM 3.
I remember my whole theater back in opening night 1997, when he got dragged into the van was SCREAMING their heads off. Also, you could say that Cotton got that in Scream 3.

I heard that Stu was actually supposed to be revealed to still be alive in Scream 3 and be the mastermind behind the killings but then Columbine happened so they scrapped it. I have a theory that if they actually went along with with the original plot for Scream 3, it would have been revealed that Stu killed Randy in Scream 2 because of the line “You’ll never be a hero and you’ll never ever get the girl”. Stu always teased Randy about his unrequited love for Sidney in Scream. We have no reason to think Mickey or Mrs. Loomis knew about his crush. And, besides Mrs. Loomis’ line, “Randy spoke poorly of Billy & I got a little knife happy” (which could’ve been meant metaphorically) we have no reason to think Mickey or Mrs. Loomis did any of the murders except for Derek’s. Ghostface’s primary weapon is a knife, but we never see Mickey or Mrs. Loomis with a knife in their hand. In the final fight scene, they both use guns. Maybe Stu manipulated them and they were red herrings this whole time, and maybe Randy was killed as a hint to Stu still being alive. Edit: Okay so apparently I was wrong about one thing. I went back to watch the end scene and Mrs. Loomis does threaten Sidney with a knife but I still stand behind my theory that Stu was meant to be the mastermind behind it all.

Yes to Kirby being the perfect successor to Randy! I really hope they retcon her apparent death in Scream 4. This series thrives off of strong character voices and she was the best of the best for the new generation.
Totally agree about Randy getting shortchanged in Scream 2…he should’ve gotten the girl (either a date with Sydney or a new, female film geek character) before getting killed. The scene when you are yelling at Jamie Lee Curtis to turn around is golden writing at its finest. Halloween directing the 3rd act of the movie at the same time was a smart idea so it was only right for Randy to be the hero.

There is a movie called "Popcorn"(1991) that has an ending very similar to this alternate one. The final girl says "Did you hear me?! Another movie(they were making movie references despite the fact they almost got killed)! Everything is a movie to me!" and the guy says "yeah, well, let's make the next one a comedy, ok?" and they hug. One of the actresses from Nightmare on Elm Street series was in the movie so I'm sure Wes knew about it. Maybe Wes changed out the alternate ending cause he didn't want to follow the ending of Popcorn too closely?

Also im still holding on to my own idea of how they shouldve let randy live and he becomes the killer in a scream movie and his motive is people surviving when not following the rules. Like killing people because they had sex or saying they’ll be right back and Dewey and Gail getting all the credit when in fact randy teaches everyone how to survive.
Tbh if they had to kill off a main character it should have been Dewy in my opinion. They kept making his character more and more dumb and oblivious in each sequel and not having a cop in the group would raise the stakes and make the others have to fight for themselves more.

It foreshadows who the killer is based on Randy's epic taunting, he gave practical advice that helped save peoples' lives down the line, and it made Scream 2 (my fave) even better. I agree. Randy was an essential character and they should've never killed him off. Obviously they ended up having some regrets which is why they included him posthumously in Scream 3. The only bigger mistake in the Scream Franchise was the decision to depart from the original script for the 3rd movie, that movie is a MESS. The original script for Scream 3 that brought back Stu was amazing.

Randy was honestly my favorite of all the characters, with Stu coming in second. PS I’ve been a fan of yours since Scream. They did do a disservice to the franchise by killing off Randy. I was pissed after Scream 2. The knowledge of Randy’s character could have served well into the 5th movie coming up. I’m upset that David Arquette is the one giving “the rules” in the trailer! No! I half expected another Randy tape to be floating out there to give us the rules! But again how would they do that. Anyway, your role is iconic and as I introduced one of my favorite movies to my daughter the other night, I made sure to have her listen to “The Rules” from the only person who could give them, Randy. I can’t have her seeing the new movie without taking her through the iconic first one. Hey, but thanks for being one of the best parts of my formative cinephile years! Your character made me feel that I fit in somewhere as the nerd. Thanks!
I think they should have kept Randy alive through the whole series. He was so in love with Sid. They should have kept him alive, as her one constant throughout, and have them end up together

I personally think your underrated as an actor all together we definitely need more movies with you in them one of my all time favorite actors as far as scream I was the one rooting for Randy scream 2 was a hard thing to experience being that Randy got killed scream was definitely one of the biggest impacts on my childhood it really opened my door to horror movies along with other movie of yours again underrated as fuck Jammie Kennedy has a unique way to reach out to the audience that no other actor can do or match the legacy is historical. In scream 5 we got flashbacks of (skeet-Billy) I would love to see some flashbacks with Randy giving advice to his family about movies maybe he wrote a letter for Sydney explaining how he felt back in 1996 and never gave it to her Randy’s sister is shown in scream 5 maybe after Randy died she was given some of Randy’s belongings and found the note for Sydney and (Jammie-Randy) dose the voice over reading the note just a thought. I want to know your idea on why he was killed. Dewey was kind of like the sweetheart of the movie, but the other two characters could have gone. Randy on the other hand should definitely not have been killed. Literally the best character of the movie. You WERE Scream.
Randy was awesome; I remember the first time I watched Scream 2 and I saw Randy get killed it was a sad moment and it had me rooting for Sidney to take out the killer.

Saw Jamie Kennedy at the improv in Tampa in 2008 he was fucking hilarious. Extremely nice and patient despite hearing 100 people walk up and tell him the same thing, including me. I wanted to just say loved you in Romeo and Juliet because it's one of my favorites, but scream will forever be in my top 3 so I couldn't avoid it, but he was great in all regards.
Randy should have never been disposable. I know you could never say, but I hope Randy makes some sort of appearance in Scream 5. He was a legendary horror character.
Definitely wished we'd seen more Randy badassness! It was actually Wes who initially said Stu didn't die but ended up (as you probably know) changing his return after Columbine due to similarities but he always stuck by that
Having a little SCREAM-a-thon for Halloween season. Watching SCREAM 2 as we speak. They really dolled you up Kennedy in this one lol. Randy isn't a dork, he is a star. These movies are perfect to watch annually. I forgot that Liev Schreiber was in them. He seems like a nice guy. Great cast in all of them.
His character wasn't portrayed as surprised by his death though, even if you ignore his video cameo in Scream 3 where he acknowledges he might well die, he broke one of the rules he spoke about in the first movie, he was drinking while telling everyone you aren't likely to survive a horror movie if you drink 🤣 They still shouldn't have killed him though, huge mistake on their part.
Oh all the deaths in Screamverse, Randy's hurt the worse. Not just cause he was the voice of the audience, he was the last of Sydney's HS friends from her hometown. Yea...his death scene still gets a reaction out of me.

Just like everyone else is saying, it was always the big 4 to me to. I remember I was 7 years old when scream 2 came out and while watching randy getting stabbed off camera me n my mom were like na there’s no way he’s dead just like the first one after he got shot n survived so after Dewey pulled the van door open, n saw his lifeless body covered in blood, we couldn’t believe they killed him. That really upset me n still can’t believe they did that, but since I’ve gotten older and have seen there are 1000s of other people in the world that feel the same way, it made me kinda happy that I wasn’t alone in this feeling. I’m also glad to have seen Wes and Kevin admit that it was a mistake killing randy, but like Jamie just said, different timelines like Halloween kills had nurse Marion and Laurie herself had been killed in the past, maybe someday someone could make a direct sequel to scream 1 n get randy again maybe

Randy was honestly my favorite of all the characters, with Stu coming in second. PS I’ve been a fan of yours since Scream. They did do a disservice to the franchise by killing off Randy. I was pissed after Scream 2. The knowledge of Randy’s character could have served well into the 5th movie coming up. I’m upset that David Arquette is the one giving “the rules” in the trailer! No! I half expected another Randy tape to be floating out there to give us the rules! But again how would they do that. Anyway, your role is iconic and as I introduced one of my favorite movies to my daughter the other night, I made sure to have her listen to “The Rules” from the only person who could give them, Randy. I can’t have her seeing the new movie without taking her through the iconic first one.

I think they should have kept Randy alive through the whole series. He was so in love with Sid. They should have kept him alive, as her one constant throughout, and have them end up together

I personally think your underrated as an actor all together we definitely need more movies with you in them one of my all time favorite actors as far as scream I was the one rooting for Randy scream 2 was a hard thing to experience being that Randy got killed scream was definitely one of the biggest impacts on my childhood it really opened my door to horror movies along with other movie of yours again underrated as fuck Jammie Kennedy has a unique way to reach out to the audience that no other actor can do or match the legacy is historical. In scream 5 we got flashbacks of (skeet-Billy) I would love to see some flashbacks with Randy giving advice to his family about movies maybe he wrote a letter for Sydney explaining how he felt back in 1996 and never gave it to her Randy’s sister is shown in scream 5 maybe after Randy died she was given some of Randy’s belongings and found the note for Sydney and (Jammie-Randy) dose the voice over reading the note just a thought. I want to know your idea on why he was killed. Dewey was kind of like the sweetheart of the movie, but the other two characters could have gone. Randy on the other hand should definitely not have been killed. Literally the best character of the movie. You WERE Scream.
Randy was awesome; I remember the first time I watched Scream 2 and I saw Randy get killed it was a sad moment and it had me rooting for Sidney to take out the killer.
You should do videos about your favorite horror! Unless you’re not that big on it. I think you did so well as Randy, that it’s easy to think Jamie is just as big of a horror fan.
This is important, making another franchise and keeping the Randy(audience, self aware) character alive
Saw Jamie Kennedy at the improv in Tampa in 2008 he was fucking hilarious. Extremely nice and patient despite hearing 100 people walk up and tell him the same thing, including me. I wanted to just say loved you in Romeo and Juliet because it's one of my favorites, but scream will forever be in my top 3 so I couldn't avoid it, but he was great in all regards.

Having a little SCREAM-a-thon for Halloween season. Watching SCREAM 2 as we speak. They really dolled you up Kennedy in this one lol. Randy isn't a dork, he is a star. These movies are perfect to watch annually. I forgot that Liev Schreiber was in them. He seems like a nice guy. Great cast in all of them.

His character wasn't portrayed as surprised by his death though, even if you ignore his video cameo in Scream 3 where he acknowledges he might well die, he broke one of the rules he spoke about in the first movie, he was drinking while telling everyone you aren't likely to survive a horror movie if you drink 🤣 They still shouldn't have killed him though, huge mistake on their part.

Oh all the deaths in Screamverse, Randy's hurt the worse. Not just cause he was the voice of the audience, he was the last of Sydney's HS friends from her hometown. Yea...his death scene still gets a reaction out of me.

Every time I watch Scream (any of them) I somehow and up ranting about how killing Randy was the worst mistake the franchise ever made. I know my friends get so tired of hearing it. Kirby was just a poor excuse of a knockoff and nowhere near as gear as Randy.

Love your take on the New #Scream Trailer Jamie I watched it earlier this morning it’s like the revamp from the 1st Scream looks like #Stab5 was n effect by the looks of it the 1st clip the Boyfriend of Tara ran cause Casey Becker ‘s Drew Barrymore Boyfriend never ran n the 1st film so that’s kinda different.
Just like everyone else is saying, it was always the big 4 to me to. I remember I was 7 years old when scream 2 came out and while watching randy getting stabbed off camera me n my mom were like na there’s no way he’s dead just like the first one after he got shot n survived so after Dewey pulled the van door open, n saw his lifeless body covered in blood, we couldn’t believe they killed him. That really upset me n still can’t believe they did that, but since I’ve gotten older and have seen there are 1000s of other people in the world that feel the same way, it made me kinda happy that I wasn’t alone in this feeling. I’m also glad to have seen Wes and Kevin admit that it was a mistake killing randy, but like Jamie just said, different timelines like Halloween kills had nurse Marion and Laurie herself had been killed in the past, maybe someday someone could make a direct sequel to scream 1 n get randy again maybe
