  • I make aluminium metal from dirt.
    there are a lot of chemicial reactions in this video, here is a list of the main ones:
    feldspar to clay;
    4KAlSi3O8 + 4H+ + 2H2O = 2K+ +Al4Si4O10(OH)8 +8SiO2
    clay to aluminium hydoxide and silicious acid (unbalanced);
    Al4Si4O10(OH)8 + H2O + H+ = Al(OH)3 + H2SiO4
    Aluminium hydroxide forming from aluminium chloride;
    AlCl3 + 3 NaOH = 3 NaCl + Al(OH)3
    aluminium hydroxide calcination;
    2Al(OH)3 = Al2O3 + 3H2O
    eletrolisis of cryolite solution (overall);
    Al2O3 + 3 C = 2 Al + 3 CO

      It is like NASCAR racing. Nobody is paying that kind of money just to watch cars drive around in a circle fast - they are there waiting for the crashes and broken bodies. It's human nature, like when you drive by an auto accident. We all slow down, and we all look - and, even though we don't say it out loud, we all know what we're looking for - and the mild disappointment (mixed with relief) when it isn't there to see.

    I work in an aluminum foundry, and we monitor the iron content of the aluminum using samples out of the melter. When the iron content gets too high, we add strontium to bind with the iron and remove it; iron makes aluminum parts brittle. Magnesium is also added to strengthen the aluminum.
