Just now I watched only 3 videos of yours consecutively (this being the fourth), and you've immediately made a subscriber out of me. I know I should get over myself, but I find it hard to watch many chemist youtubers because their setups and methods involve nice, sparkly equipment and lab-specific feedstock, and their explanations are highly reflective of textbook educations, and unfortunately, much of it just isn't available to me, or (and this is the part I need to get over) just doesn't vibe with my cheap, kinda dirty, mostly-internet-educated way of doing things. You, on the other hand, strike me as an idealized version of what I've got going on- self-reliant, MacGyver-level resourceful, utilizing more generally available chemicals, relying on an encyclopedia of curated handy information between your ears. I have a new role model.
I like Cody's signature furnace. Could probably build one that looks way nicer but it is like a steampunk engine keeping the UA-cam machine running, don't change it if it isn't broke!
Feels like I'm in the lab again. These videos are so awesome, love how they're not overproduced and instead just focused on nice shots of the material with your narration, taking us through all the steps and your thought process. Great job, sir.
I wouldn't wish kidney stones on my worst enemy. They are painful enough that when my appendix nearly burst I thought "Oh this is only a mild pain, not big deal I can wait a few days to see if it goes away instead of going to the hospital immediately." Narrator: He should have gone to the hospital immediately. Don't fuck around with abdominal pain, kids.
so, with composting. you can actually compost meat, but it'll require different conditions than plant matter does to break down properly. you basically need to be turning over your compost pile, mixing it up and such, every couple days or so. it is actually possible to make something to do this for you, like a bin with a shaft down the middle, that shaft has rods off the sides and can be spun to mix the contents. you still don't want an all-meat compost though. when i do this i go for around a 70/30 split between plant matter and meat, meat being the lower one, and that gets me decent results
Not me. That would ultimately just come down to who has the best equipment. Plus, science is better when it is collaborative rather than competitive, like when NurdRage and others were trying to find the best way to produce sodium metal. And I love the full spectrum from NileRed's fancy lab to PoorMans Chemist's outdoor lab.
That Bone Juice is incredible! As Cody said, it would wreck your teeth when drunk, so it's both Bone Juice AND Bone Hurting Juice! A true marvel of science!
I actually cheered when you dropped the grey spongy stuff into water & it fizzed! But the best pay off was that bright, white light from burning the calcium! Beautiful! 😃 Edit: Plus, I absolutely love two of the channels I follow kind of "closing the loop". When two people I've followed for years & think of as friends almost meet because of shared interests. It's a nice feeling.
I always forget that calcium is a metal, I dont know, I guess Calcium carbonate and such are just soo common that Ive come to think of calcium as "chalk" lol
I must admit, when I saw this video pop up in my subscriptions, I was like, "Wait, what? Didn't I already see this video go by?" only to realize the one I'd seen before was Extractions&Ire, and the new one was you. I'm guessing that if one is a chemistry UA-camr, extracting calcium from bones for Hallowe'en is, like, an obvious, low-hanging fruit kinda deal. Or at least _was,_ now that it's been done twice. ❤
If every channel was like Cody's Lab we would have already solved all the worlds problems, and travelled to distant galaxy's and started to solve the problems of alien planets.
Well that was an impressive process! I like seeing the differences between yours and Tom's attempts. Also I think that's the first time I've seen metallic calcium burn. Huh.
Always love the creative topics! Trying to refine uncommon resources from common material sounds fairly difficult, though you always make it seem so easy
Great work, Cody! It would be intersting to test your final product of the "mercury route" for the presence of calcium carbide - if you want to go the whole nine yards. It is easy to confuse calcium carbide with metallic calcium since it also releases a flammable gas when reacted with water (acetylene instead of hydrogen).
Seems unlikely. Acetylene burns bright and with a lot of soot. Very unique flame, could not think of anything comparable, really. Hydrogen just....burns.
jack of all trades and master of at least 5. brilliant video, from concept through calcium floating on mercury to metal with a great surface area that burned nice too. well done and thanks.
Lately I've been getting into arguments with people about how calcium is a metal. "Calcium is not a metal, it's a mineral" they say. I've tried to explain the periodic table to said people but they just don't listen.
People believe the first thing said or saw without any research and place it as set in stone facts regardless of what else its shown to them these days cuz they saw it somewheee for .00032 seconds somewhere else first its honestly sad i love how cody breaks it down on what the rractions are and end results then the steps to take for what he wants it to get to

Respect for the mad amount of mercury cleanup work that goes into making a video like this one.
Oh dude I was thinking the same thing watching this. Must be a freaking nightmare.
Sum of the process;
Bone -> Bone ash -> Bone juice -> Bone stone -> Bone juice pt 2 (now with extra poison) -> Bone metal
Oxalates... the bane of my existence as a sufferer of kidney stones
👏 watching E&F do this, I was rooting for the "cremate it first" approach.
E&*F*?
I was disappointed when exp&ire didn't end up with a chunk of metal in the end. So I am looking forward to this video!
I think I will just order some calcium for my bones.
I watched Extraction and Fire do this one this morning and his didn't go so well, his calcium came out with a bunch of tar
But it was high quality tar
Only the highest grade of tar will do.
@@ficolas2 The finest!
The one, the only - *TAR*
He said in his description “Cody’s Lab will do this better” lmao
"The same stuff that kidney stones are made out of"
Me: full of sudden rage.
I wouldn't wish kidney stones on my worst enemy. They are painful enough that when my appendix nearly burst I thought "Oh this is only a mild pain, not big deal I can wait a few days to see if it goes away instead of going to the hospital immediately."
Narrator: He should have gone to the hospital immediately.
Don't fuck around with abdominal pain, kids.
I'm not the only one who reacted that way, I see!
Me: eat it.
Imagine putting it in someone's food holy shit what an evil prank
so, with composting. you can actually compost meat, but it'll require different conditions than plant matter does to break down properly. you basically need to be turning over your compost pile, mixing it up and such, every couple days or so. it is actually possible to make something to do this for you, like a bin with a shaft down the middle, that shaft has rods off the sides and can be spun to mix the contents.
you still don't want an all-meat compost though. when i do this i go for around a 70/30 split between plant matter and meat, meat being the lower one, and that gets me decent results
I may not be a "super fan" but whether you make daily, weekly, monthly or annual videos I will always come back to check for updates.
Who else would love to see a UA-cam chemist challenge that would have me as excited as the chain fountain "challenge"?
See one chain fountain, the rest are the same.
Using electrolysis to inject the electrons directly was something I never even though of. Super cool!
That Bone Juice is incredible! As Cody said, it would wreck your teeth when drunk, so it's both Bone Juice AND Bone Hurting Juice!
A true marvel of science!
I’ve been following you for close to ten years and you still blow me away
I'm making sure to let all the ads run through completely in hopes it'll boost Cody's revenue
I actually cheered when you dropped the grey spongy stuff into water & it fizzed! But the best pay off was that bright, white light from burning the calcium! Beautiful! 😃
Edit: Plus, I absolutely love two of the channels I follow kind of "closing the loop". When two people I've followed for years & think of as friends almost meet because of shared interests. It's a nice feeling.
I always forget that calcium is a metal, I dont know, I guess Calcium carbonate and such are just soo common that Ive come to think of calcium as "chalk" lol
Weird to think we actually have metal bones huh?!
@@DaftFader wolverine's bones are just like ours but a little bit thicker
@@DaftFader we also drink the metal from cows udders. Nature is metal \m/
CaCO3 (t*)-> CaO+CO2
CaO+2HCl -> CaCl2+H2O
Cody’s lab and Nile red have thoroughly relit the chemistry bug my 9th grade chemistry teacher squashed and set ablaze and I love it!!!
when I saw Extractions and Ire's video I was like "I bet cody could do it" and here we are.
Yeah.. Tom is better with explosives :P
Phosphorous from bones would be more interesting/more challenging, at least the guys over at sciencemadness had considerable trouble doing that
Bone juice: the opposite of bone hurting juice!
It probably would hurt your bones though
Ow oof ouch oww
and chicken gas on another channel
Bone helping juice :)
That's what you get after the juice hurts the bones.
If every channel was like Cody's Lab we would have already solved all the worlds problems, and travelled to distant galaxy's and started to solve the problems of alien planets.
Wow - absolutely lovely demonstration to extract pure calcium from bone ! 👌👌
Been here since the gold refining days your videos encouraged me to save up to go to school and learn more about chemistry 😃
Always nice to see more of this series. Explosions and fire's video is a nice bone-us too.
..... Will you see yourself out?...
@@andersjjensen Alright, I will. Good night!
Lately I've been getting into arguments with people about how calcium is a metal. "Calcium is not a metal, it's a mineral" they say. I've tried to explain the periodic table to said people but they just don't listen.
Wait until they find out that sodium is a metal
People believe the first thing said or saw without any research and place it as set in stone facts regardless of what else its shown to them these days cuz they saw it somewheee for .00032 seconds somewhere else first its honestly sad i love how cody breaks it down on what the rractions are and end results then the steps to take for what he wants it to get to
Someone once tried to convince me that elemental mercury is the most toxic element
@@vivimannequin They probably know about four elements
@@vivimannequin I keep having to explain to people that mercury compounds are poisonous, not mercury itself
Tom disappointed us with calcium chloride
Cody always deliver
Just to be clear I still love tom
This video was literally my introduction to E&F, and I'm so grateful to you for that XD

What happened?
Cody, I've been watching you for years... And you sir are an inspiration to our youth, informative, creative, entertaining and a fantastic UA-camr. ❤️ Your channel sir.
"The staint, stainless dish!"
killed me! 😂
This is the best Halloween ever
Okay: moral of the story is that no Halloween, no matter how fun, is ever complete without watching a Cody’sLab video.
Chicken->bone->bone ash->bone juice->kidneystone mud->calcium metal is my favorite conversion I've seen so far
I add meat to the compist and have great results. Small bits of oil, fat, meat and even grains get broken diwn by insects on down. Lots of bones too.
That magnet part was so cool! And Bone Juice is just what I needed on Halloween.
Is like a cooking show.
Just gonna juice these bones here... Put a magnet under to catch the pips uh I mean flakes.
Damn a lot of effort went into this video and I really enjoyed it, thank you Cody! it had to be one of the most requested things and you finally did it :D
Watching Cody trying to extract calcium from bones is really what I need after a very long day.
10:58 the first video I’ve watched in months and it talks about kidney stones while I’m trying to pass one myself. Bravo
Love the videos Cody! I always learn stuff! Thanks for making the world a more educated,
Fun and interesting place
this is THE BEST halloween video ive ever seen, genuenly perfect all its missing is those bones dancing lmao
No one:
Cody: CLEAN WATER FROM PURE SHIT.
That's bill gates
that one is easy, just ask a politician to make if for you.
Put shit in beaker, heat, distill off pure, delicious water, domt forget to get a good whiff of the process
Hey Cody, I am a Biology Professor and I think you would do great teaching Chemistry. I am better in a group of people, but your videos are on pointe!
Cody have you hear of Victoria Stone? Victoria Stone is also known as “Imori Stone”, named after it’s Japanese creator, Dr. Imori. It Is not an artificial or fake stone. What Dr. Imori was able to accomplish was to actually blend several different minerals using a special process known only to him to come up with an Imori Stone, commonly called Victoria Stone. big money if someone could recreate it.
As chef & someone who likes to collect dead things: pineapple juice. Great for removing the last protein bits from bones & stuff. Cleanest bones I've gotten & not nearly as delicate as bleached or boiled bones.
