Raised in Lake Tahoe California I was stationed at Fort Mcclean Alabama. I remember my first trip into the local town off base I was a bit freaked out. People would come up out of the blue and just start a conversation. I got invited to 2 different family's homes for dinner. Yes, I was in Uniform, but I have never been treated so nice by people ever in my life. Also, I stopped at a rundown looking breakfast place a mom-and-POP business. Best breakfast i have ever had. The wife kept coming out adding more hash browns and gravy saying I was a growing boy and needed a full breakfast.
I totally get it ,I'm from Vegas and my parents are from the south , including Mobil AL. I remember the first time I went to the south. It was in the late 70's and it was a bit of a culture shock, I'm s good way. The people , children everyone was so nice and friendly. My daughter was living in Georgia and South Carolina for a bit , my sister and I decided to explore our southern roots in 2015. Really nothing had changed, still that great southerner hospitality, that put Vegas to shame. I'm super proud of my southern roots .

I am also from Norway, and I have shown some of the videos from the Lakota reservations and with LA Chicanos in an English class, so that my students could see what I understood as more"real" than any TV or movie production.
@@eisenschmeisser3959 Actually a good amount of America is that. Just don't live in the god darn cities. We have 50 states (Countries), all Europeans ever see is NY city, LA, and Miami. They see the stupid crime and high cost of living. And of course the poverty. I am not saying most Americans are rich but I am saying most Americans are definitely not as poor as they think. If only they'd leave the crowded and expensive cities. In America as long as your willing to move, you can live a decent life.

I agree, we in the EU mostly see/hear about terrible healtcare, crime, politics etc. but we are never shown how big and diverse the USA is. It's not all about the big city's. very happy to see diffrent perspectives in Peters video's :)
@@cmichelle9986 The guy who invited Peter there has it actively in his mind that a day might come when he will be driving around in that car's trunk full of weapons. That weird mindset exists only in the US. It has become natural to you guys (so you won't get the point anyway), but people outside know that it's partly because of the decades of Hollywood movies conditioning their minds about all sorts of imaginary threats, coupled with the fear of the unknown. (Americans tend to generally lack much knowledge about the outside world). Result: There are very few countries on earth that's more violent than the USA at this point.

Alabama is hugely diverse! From the mountains and rivers to the north, to the farmland blackbelt, to the gorgeous coast. There’s about a 5-10 degree difference due to elevation difference. The whole state has unparalleled beauty with people so nice, it will throw you off for a minute. Born raised and a permanent resident for 53 years now
True story.. My parents bought a lake house in northeastern Alabama. On the first day they stayed there a close neighbor down the street came over and introduced himself and told my parents if they ever needed a ride that they could take his. Car doors are always unlocked and keys are in the ignition. 😂. Also, neighbors would bring us fresh fruit , fish, etc. neighbors would randomly mow our lawn on occasions if we haven't been to the property in awhile. Another neighbor had a key to the house to check up on it when we were gone, etc.
Chances are they mowed the lawn because they didn’t like the way it looked. AL talks out of both sides of their mouth. They like “freedom” but try to control people at the same time.

@@isacericsson7218 I recommend moving to the newly Growing towns in Alabama. Pete’s video of coastal Alabama is a good representation but even in middle Alabama or northern Alabama. All the folks from Georgia who are able are moving out of Georgia and into Alabama. No income tax and its Progressed into being what Georgia used to be. Alabama is going to have great opportunities from here on in housing market. Don’t listen to internet articles just go check it out and talk to folks in the state about where to move.

Wow! This video blew me away. The quality of life that these residents have. Not so much in terms of the expensive houses but the weather, the community spirit, the friendliness and the beautiful bay. Just wow. I would love to visit one day.

You can look it up too though. Unfortunately, these UA-camrs are exposing places that will one day be ruined like the rest of the areas that were once great. Like California, which was great back when. Fortunately, it helps us learn more without traveling though.

Social media is the root cause of all the problems ppl think they’re dealing with today. It’s not real. Or if it is, it’s significantly amplified by the incessant promotion of negativity online. I wish we could get rid of social media forever. It’s ruining every aspect of life. Ppl need to stop vicariously experiencing life thru all these divisive filters and constraints and just go live life. Experience it for themselves. Not have someone else tell you about it.
I honestly loved this episode. As a New Englander, this really shattered my toxic conception of the Gulf South overall. And I honestly teared up when the mom mentioned accepting and loving her son just the way he is.
Alabama native and resident here. Good for you on admitting your misconceptions about the South. We all need to be better about understanding different regions of our country rather than believing media stereotypes. I went to Boston and Rhode Island in 2018 for the first time. Some of the nicest and most down to earth people I’ve ever met. I think Peter is doing such a service in educating us about our own country and it’s beautiful people. Some can be a bit rude sometimes, though. If I had to guess, Lynch is referencing ideological "contamination". Similar to the migration of both left- and right-wing individuals fleeing the coasts and now living in Florida, Texas, Tennessee, etc. NE doesn't really have that aura in my mind, but ya know. Myself, wife and child stumbled upon this place some years back and simply could NOT believe just how special Fairhope, AL is..... To this day, recalling my son run around the halls of The Grande are treasures I'll take to the grave. He LOVED it there, even as just more than a toddler at the time.

I’m born and raised in California. In the late 80’s when I was 15-16 I got to go spend the summer with my aunt and uncle who lived there, my uncle his whole life except his time in the service. We fished almost every day and took fish to someone different everyday. He knew no strangers. By far the best and most memorable summer of my life. Thank you uncle Lester!

I was born in NYC but my father's family is from Birmingham. The 5 years we lived there really shaped my life experience in a very positive way. I always tell people don't be afraid of the deep south. The people are amazing, the scenery is gorgeous and the food is ❤.
I don't know whether to thank or curse you Peter for painting a true picture of the deep south. I grew up in the North and heard all the prejudice viewpoints of the South but didn't realize how skewed those viewpoints were until at the age of 13 my father was transferred south. You did a beautiful job of capturing the true spirit of the South, thanks. On the negative side, after your wonderful exposé, everyone will want to move to this wonderful area we call the Deep South!😊
In my county if you breakdown on the side of the road within 10 trucks that pass you someone is gonna stop and help you. It doesn't matter what color your skin is.
I travel the states in a van, gotta say I was impressed when I came to Southern Alabama. The people are amazing. Super friendly and speak to you with respect. Sweet home Alabama is a perfect song for this state❤

Independently without a Chinese community to land into is heartwarming! The “tour” and people we met seemed so easy going, friendly and at ease!!! Happy they found their paradise.
We have been lied about , until most people would never believe how nice it is here, no matter if they even see it for themselves. That is so sad. Born and raised in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Fairhope is a hidden gem. Alabama the Beautiful is not just on the sign when you enter the state for no reason. Alabama is renowned for its outdoor scenery.

My wife and I have traveled from Maryland to Fairhope multiple times and it has quickly become our favorite vacation spot. It’s beautiful, the people are friendly as hell, the gulf towns aren’t far away and it’s affordable. It’s our dream to move down there full time one day.

My friend was driving through south, she had a small Biden 2020 sticker and the hicks from that town harassed her and her daughters. I wish other residents helped her but looked away. Good oly boy network. They are hypocrites in that town. I don't call them down to earth people.
As a born mobilian: The Delta is a national treasure. The oaks along Government/Dauphin/Airport/Old Shell/Springhill are spectacular. A true treasure. The people are as lazy, bigoted, and racist as any in the western world. The vast majority of the state is a polluted shit show. It deserves it’s bad reputation.
I'm from Chicago area and made my first trip to Alabama about 15 years ago. I tell a lot of people about how beautiful it is, unfortunately most of the time it just goes in one ear and out the other, need to go there for yourself and experience it. It's the people that make or break a place. Roll TIDE!

My daughter lived in Alabama for 11 months. I am Hispanic, and my children were born here. All I experienced while she was there were people who enjoyed simple pleasures and can do a mean cookout😊
Hi Peter, I am from the UK and next February I'll be doing a 5 month road trip round the USA with my wife. I watch a lot of your videos for ideas for places to visit, and I can tell you Fairhope will definitely be on the list! We did a 5 month trip in 2017 covering a lot of the USA and I can say that American people were almost exclusively lovely to us, but in the South it was next level, people were so kind and welcoming regardless of colour or creed. I love you videos, keep up the good work!
If you’re a history buff you can visit the USS Alabama, it’s a massive WW2 battleship. It might be a little detour but it’s definitely worth it. And be prepared for the weather, if you’re visiting in the summer stay hydrated. People not used to the humidity can get really bad heat exhaustion.
I think I can clear up a few things. I'm an actual resident of Fairhope and have lived here for the past 14 years of my life. I grew up across the bay in Mobile, AL and have been coming to Fairhope since the 1970's.After high school, I moved away and lived in North Alabama, Florida and North Carolina, I have been to California, New York etc. Ok, first things first, Doug did a great job and its pretty much exactly the way he represents it. However, to me there are TWO Fairhope s emerging and they are more or less divided by the highway that runs through the east part of town called Greeno rd. You could think of the western part of that divide as the nice bay houses on the shore ,older quaint neighborhoods and the "downtown" part that everyone loves and hears about. The eastern part is more shopping centers, apt complexes, and subdivisions with MANY more being planned everyday. This part used to be mainly farm lands and forest, but we are losing more of that everyday because so many are moving here. Now it wasn't always this way back in the 80s the bay side neighborhoods were mostly 2 bedroom cottages that people would come over from Mobile to stay in Doug mentions this in the video and I can vouch for the fact that back in the 90's,in Baldwin county there was no places to take a girl on a date. There were no Movie theaters, No Bowling alleys ,not many restaurants nothing really. You had to cross the bay and go to Mobile. That did keep home prices WAY down on this side of the bay. The last 10 or 15 years it has exploded here commercially and now people are moving here to live. This has made it harder on the natives though. To live in the "bay side" part of Fairhope, you have to have $$$$$ and that's no problem if you move here from California and you can afford to pay a million or so cause you sold your house out west and are flush with cash. It is a problem if you are middle class or below and dont already own a house or land. Now all of that to say, our founding town members were good people and portioned areas down by the bay to be used as parkland. So you aren't going to boxed off from the nice areas completely. Even the nicer homes down on the water have walkways that run along the bay, and my encounters have always been nice ones with the people who live in the houses. They dont care if you walk along the beach or sidewalk. Even had a guy tell me I could use his pier if I wanted to walk out and take a picture. I just wanted to kind of better highlight what was being seen in the video ,it is a pretty good place to live, fall through spring is absolutely gorgeous weather, summers are brutal hot, there are gators and sharks in the bay and the water gets a little contaminated after a good rain storm. Oh and the comments about the racism etc. are just silly, people wouldnt put up with that here. If that was tried you'd more likely have 10 people defending you. Fairhope has never been Klan territory. In fact when the original town founders showed up from mostly Midwest, there was already a community of freed slaves living just south of here. It has always been this kind of hippie ,artist laid back quiet type of place. If anyone has any other questions or anything I'd be happy to answer them. Thanks for coming down Peter and great video
My parents have a house a block away from the bay, walking distance to downtown. It’s a modest 3 bedroom, one story place. The place next door is maybe 2k square feet, if you include the non-connecting garage (not sure what the word is for that). Last year it sold for 1.7 million. Guarantee that place would have been listed for, at most, 125k in the 90s.
Same thing happened to my home town. Mostly Californians discovered it and moved here in droves the past decade. Median income is still $55k, yet average home price is over $500k. Younger locals can't buy homes and are forced to rent. Crime is increasing and taxes and cost of living is skyrocketing.
@@treyveston7965 around here renting a house isn't even affordable...if it's a decent price within city limits..its snatched up in a few days...the people coming from other areas to live are making the rentals skyrocket because they are renting houses until they can find something to buy or they are waiting until they get a house built
So sad to see this happening in so many places. My kids buying a house, or heck even myself a new place, not in the cards right now where they grew up. Sad. But shows, and comments, like this offer insight where maybe to go.
From Alberta, Canada, and spent a week in Fairhope last summer visiting family. I gotta say, it is the most charming, friendly and absolutely beautiful community! Everywhere I went, people were easy to talk to and very chill. The art scene is everywhere. I could easily call it home.
Alabama resident here, our state is probably one of the most underrated in my opinion! Lots of people like to point out the negative, but there are plenty of places in Alabama that are just SO nice and relaxing. We have (small) mountains, tons of rivers, beaches, lakes, and mild winters. Plus tons of industry in north Alabama
No life threatening flooding, unless you live on a river which would be dumb. Tornado season can get busy. A 2" snow once every 3-4 years (in center Alabama). Fairhope deals with hurricanes sometimes. Not too long ago a brutal hurricane hit the town and boats were everywhere from being torn off people docks. @@regaininglife9084
@@Wowzersdude-k5cthat’s false, Southern tornadoes are more dangerous because they are usually rain rapped and hidden. In states like Oklahoma you can see the tornadoes for miles. Are’s just appear out of know where because your view is blocked by hills and trees. It’s really dangerous. And are weather is more violent in general.
Worked producing convention shows nationwide for 20 years, did over 3,000 TV & Radio shows, worked ten years to get through college many degrees, working as a meat cutter for Kroger, (thank God for Kroger, getting me through all that college), went to Alabama as a kid and even many decades ago it was then and now "Alabama The Beautiful." Was a professor in Conn., Pa. & New Jersey, and still enjoyed going to Alabama, Birmingham Metro, is rolling hills, mountains, deep valley's, Huntsville in Rocket City, love every part of this state and traveled to most the world and have enough money to live where my wife and I want, but there is something about Alabama that is special. The Gulf Shores & Orange Beach area of Alabama is to die for with white powder beaches and most friendly people in the world. The state is also over 78% tree cover, hardwoods from Montgomery north to the mountains and below that area is the Pine Level. Trees everywhere! Alabama is also growing and the new car industry is now in the top three nationwide in total new car production. Alabama is also one of the most biodiverse state in the nation. The state has over 132,000 miles of inland waterways, which is number one in the nation. Something most people don't understand is that Alabama is for sure one of the most biologically diverse states too, as I lived in Missouri for 26 years and been married now 55 years, but even Missouri does not come close in this either, as Alabama is one of the most diverse in species, with 6,350 and counting. You have to go to Alaska to beat the diversity. Over the years, my wife and I wanted to escape "The City Of Brotherly Love", as the weather was crappy and the people for sure crappy and not friendly. So, after doing all those thousands of TV & Radio shows and then my nationally syndicated TV series news inserts seen daily called "Making Ends Meet Cooking" on network affiliates in Canada, U.S., including ABC in Hawaii and CBS in Alaska and also in Alabama on ABC and in the Virgin Island too! When seen in Alabama a food chain called Bruno's/Food World then in six states, called me in Phila., and said "we want you in Alabama." Well, I said "I would crawl to get to Mobile", and Mr. Bruno, "said Jon we watch you in the news every day and we will fly you down in one of our two jets." He made me an offer I could not refuse, so-to-speak and after writing now eight best sellers with Pyramid, Jove, Dell/Random House and now my own publishing company on food, now others including "Birmingham's Best Restaurants Cookbook" and a novel and then producing many hundreds of convention shows, nine in Alabama cities and across America. So, all that travel brought about one more book on Alabama. I wrote three best selling editions of "Alabama's Best Restaurants Cookbook", with 55 pages of travel destinations you must see in Alabama, and the ten year best seller has micro-breweries, and the wine trail and even the antique trail, as anything you put craft beer or wine in it just makes it better! So, as strange as it seems my wife and I chose to live in this friendly and most beautiful state where the people and weather if mostly friendly. Alabama people understand and love this diverse state. By the way, whites and blacks get along better down south and in Alabama than any northern state, we know, we lived there for years too!

Kinda inspires me to make videos of place I live and the people I meet. I’m currently on O’ahu and miss parts of Florida/Alabama. I’m hoping to visit Rotorua this year.
I am canadian and I remember back in '99, I was in Orlando Florida for an international rugby tournament and myself and a few of the boys on the team were at a bar one night and we met this group of guys and gals that were chattin us up, real friendly. We asked "where are they from? and they mentioned L.A. and we all looked at each other perplexed because they definitely sounded "southern", then one of the guys said "Lower Alabama" ..lol. It was a good night of partying.
My wife and I have been travelling around 32 some States, Alabama's rest stop is the cleanest, the most beautiful area and the nicest staff. Thanks Alabama!

That house being built at 2:50 is in my family. I'm 30, my mother is in her 60s, my grandfather is in his 80s. My great grandparents bought that property when Fairhope wasn't discovered. It used to be a tiny little home with two bedrooms. Finally, my grandfather decided to redo the place, as our family is growing. Turns out, and I had local tell me this in that Grand Hotel Bar, that my family has a lot more history there than most. However, I guess we are just are just the wealthy people from out of state. All that said, Fairhope is beautiful. I hope you enjoyed your time down there.

Funny how there was a slightly ironic judgment about the redoing of that house amidst all the claiming that everybody knows everybody, yet they did not know (or at least if they did, they didn't articulate) that it was being redone by a family with longstanding roots in the area.
As a black man who went to college in AL but now resides on the east coast, I would say AL is way more welcoming. There’s racism and discrimination, but it’s worse on the east coast. In AL you know where to go and ppl have general respect and let you know, on the east coast they’ll smile and act like they aren’t racist and will be the biggest bigot. I love the South!

There is less racism in the south than California or New York. That doesn't grab the headlines so they keep telling the story that was relevant 100 years ago. Dwight Yokom has a song I Sang Dixie. Your videos shed light on the fact that people outside the US only see a tiny sliver of the people in our country. Thank you for these videos. A lot of us live normal lives and simply live our day to day doing what we can.
It's so true. Watching this from New Zealand. So grateful for Peter showing these people and stories. Without channels like this we would never see this side of America and Americans from a distance. Long overdue for me to revisit the US too. Would love to visit Alabama!
People outside the US see only those aspects of America that mainstream media chooses to present. Mainstream media originates, for the most part, in Hollywood, New York and Washington, DC. Media content originating in New York is concerned almost solely with money. With exceptions, media content originating in DC and Hollywood is a distorted picture of America produced by people whose primary motivation is to futher their own political agenda. Don't you believe it! Peter shows America as it truly is. I am 65 and I have lived my entire life in the intermountain West of America. I can say from personal experience that Peter's short documentaries about cattle ranching on the high plains of Colorado, about the tension between locals and newcomers in Montana and Idaho, about the Mexican border in Texas and Arizona and every other short documentary Peter has produced about the West are each crystal clear, unbiased portrayals of his subject. I personally believe Peter should win the Academy Award for his 2023 documentary interview of Yuma County [Arizona] Sheriff Leon Wilmot, which Peter conducted during an all-day "ride along" with Sheriff Wilmot at the Mexican border below Yuma. That is not likely to happen, though, because Peter did not adopt the approved Leftist view of the border situation. He simply portrayed his subject as it is, and truth does not win an Academy Award.
The same can be said of every Country visit it and make your own minds up. America is not perfect by any means i too so no blacks just big homes for the rich white to be honest.

I’m a FL transplant (1971) born in Springfield, MO, Queen City of the Ozarks. To ME, Southwestern Missouri is the absolute center of what America is about. Mountains that r not like the Appalachians, history like the old west, Tablerock Lake and many others, cows grazing, corn growing, trains whistling day & night, multiple colleges, with art & foodie culture nowadays. Branson is a huge deal over the past few decades, but during my childhood it was a gas station or 2 off of the main 2 lane Hwy! U must visit! It’s where my maternal grandparents lived their 72 yr marriage & where my Mom & I were born, so it will always be home!
Thanks for teaching me that word, fernweh. I know exactly the feeling. When I was 14 my dad went on a business trip to Europe and took me. Landed in Frankfurt and stayed in a youth hostel in Essen. Then from there went on a month long trip through Holland, Brussels, Paris, Lyon, French Alps. 35 years later I still think fondly of that trip. Fernweh is the right word to encompass all of that.
Discovered Fairhope Alabama last year. Just decided to get off the highway and go see. Fell in love with the place! Had lunch...did a little shopping in some cool shops....looked around a bit. If it weren't for the heat and humidity I might already be living there. ❤

Longtime AL resident here. Fairhope is incredible. One of the more scenic coastal towns I have visited in the US. I would add that Alabama has a variety of scenery: much of the northern portion is mountains.
My friend went to Alabama about 20 years ago just to holiday there from the UK and she absolutely loved it. She is a people watcher and she just loved the place
I moved to Alabama from Illinois about eight and a half years ago. It was the best decision I ever made, it’s absolutely beautiful here and the people are so genuine. Fairhope is one of my wife’s favorite towns. This is where I’ll die. Roll Tide !!!!

I was born and raised in south Alabama. And I’m so pleased to see this video, representing this portion of Alabama. However, you have just interviewed the “haves”and have gotten their viewpoint and have experienced their lifestyle. Now go interview the “have nots”. You will see a huge difference.
Alanama is a truly beautiful place. I grew up there in the 40's and 50's. It is a very varied place from the Gulf Coast in the south to the mountains of the northeast. Beautiful.❤
We moved from Arizona to Spanish Fort five years ago, which is just north of Fairhope. This man is spot on, everybody here is friendly and more than willing to help you out . The stigma about Alabama being a racist state is overblown, everybody treats, everybody down here with respect. My wife and I have a saying “ we thought we were a nice people when we moved here, we actually have to be nicer”
It's easy to say racism is scarce here in Alabama but it's easy to say no one hates grizzly bears at the North Pole. Since non white people hear all the bad things about Alabama, they won't want to live there, therefore the racism is reduced.
I was born and raised in California. Spent the first 48 years of my life there. The wife and I moved to Alabama 2 years ago and we absolutely love it. We are in a small town between Tuscaloosa and Birmingham and have no plans of leaving. We are having fun exploring and learning about our new home. I would love to experience the things in this video and more. It's a different world that what we knew in the West.
Shhh! Don't tell anyone how nice it is! But seriously those small semi-rural towns in the Tuscaloose/Birmingham/Montgomery triangle are so nice. Most of them have picturesque main streets with beautiful old style plantation houses lining them. Always dreamed in living in one of those when I'm an old man.

My friend Bama in high school, was always so proud of where he was from we didn’t even know his real name for the longest! 😂 We lived in Oregon, and he was one of the first people from Alabama I’ve met, such a sweet and funny soul. He passed away back in his home state in 2019, I will always think of him. Roll Tide!

I still find it hard to comprehend how so very different each state and county can be from each other and how huge the US is I love these insights you provide, I work for a US company and speaking with my colleagues I find it surprising how little most people have travelled and explored their own country , you would never need a European vacation in your lifetime if you chose to explore what the US has to offer, keep up the great work Peter absolutely brilliant.

Raised in Lake Tahoe California I was stationed at Fort Mcclean Alabama. I remember my first trip into the local town off base I was a bit freaked out. People would come up out of the blue and just start a conversation. I got invited to 2 different family's homes for dinner. Yes, I was in Uniform, but I have never been treated so nice by people ever in my life. Also, I stopped at a rundown looking breakfast place a mom-and-POP business. Best breakfast i have ever had. The wife kept coming out adding more hash browns and gravy saying I was a growing boy and needed a full breakfast.
I work in that town.
I totally get it ,I'm from Vegas and my parents are from the south , including Mobil AL. I remember the first time I went to the south. It was in the late 70's and it was a bit of a culture shock, I'm s good way. The people , children everyone was so nice and friendly. My daughter was living in Georgia and South Carolina for a bit , my sister and I decided to explore our southern roots in 2015. Really nothing had changed, still that great southerner hospitality, that put Vegas to shame. I'm super proud of my southern roots .

I am also from Norway, and I have shown some of the videos from the Lakota reservations and with LA Chicanos in an English class, so that my students could see what I understood as more"real" than any TV or movie production.

If only they'd leave the crowded and expensive cities. In America as long as your willing to move, you can live a decent life.

That weird mindset exists only in the US. It has become natural to you guys (so you won't get the point anyway), but people outside know that it's partly because of the decades of Hollywood movies conditioning their minds about all sorts of imaginary threats, coupled with the fear of the unknown. (Americans tend to generally lack much knowledge about the outside world). Result: There are very few countries on earth that's more violent than the USA at this point.

Alabama is hugely diverse! From the mountains and rivers to the north, to the farmland blackbelt, to the gorgeous coast. There’s about a 5-10 degree difference due to elevation difference. The whole state has unparalleled beauty with people so nice, it will throw you off for a minute. Born raised and a permanent resident for 53 years now

My parents bought a lake house in northeastern Alabama. On the first day they stayed there a close neighbor down the street came over and introduced himself and told my parents if they ever needed a ride that they could take his. Car doors are always unlocked and keys are in the ignition. 😂. Also, neighbors would bring us fresh fruit , fish, etc. neighbors would randomly mow our lawn on occasions if we haven't been to the property in awhile. Another neighbor had a key to the house to check up on it when we were gone, etc.

Chances are they mowed the lawn because they didn’t like the way it looked. AL talks out of both sides of their mouth. They like “freedom” but try to control people at the same time.

@@isacericsson7218 I recommend moving to the newly Growing towns in Alabama. Pete’s video of coastal Alabama is a good representation but even in middle Alabama or northern Alabama. All the folks from Georgia who are able are moving out of Georgia and into Alabama. No income tax and its Progressed into being what Georgia used to be. Alabama is going to have great opportunities from here on in housing market. Don’t listen to internet articles just go check it out and talk to folks in the state about where to move.

Social media is the root cause of all the problems ppl think they’re dealing with today. It’s not real. Or if it is, it’s significantly amplified by the incessant promotion of negativity online. I wish we could get rid of social media forever. It’s ruining every aspect of life. Ppl need to stop vicariously experiencing life thru all these divisive filters and constraints and just go live life. Experience it for themselves. Not have someone else tell you about it.

I honestly loved this episode. As a New Englander, this really shattered my toxic conception of the Gulf South overall. And I honestly teared up when the mom mentioned accepting and loving her son just the way he is.
Alabama native and resident here. Good for you on admitting your misconceptions about the South. We all need to be better about understanding different regions of our country rather than believing media stereotypes. I went to Boston and Rhode Island in 2018 for the first time. Some of the nicest and most down to earth people I’ve ever met. I think Peter is doing such a service in educating us about our own country and it’s beautiful people. Myself, wife and child stumbled upon this place some years back and simply could NOT believe just how special Fairhope, AL is..... To this day, recalling my son run around the halls of The Grande are treasures I'll take to the grave. He LOVED it there, even as just more than a toddler at the time.

I’m born and raised in California. In the late 80’s when I was 15-16 I got to go spend the summer with my aunt and uncle who lived there, my uncle his whole life except his time in the service. We fished almost every day and took fish to someone different everyday. He knew no strangers. By far the best and most memorable summer of my life. Thank you uncle Lester!

I grew up in the North and heard all the prejudice viewpoints of the South but didn't realize how skewed those viewpoints were until at the age of 13 my father was transferred south. Born and raised in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Fairhope is a hidden gem. Alabama the Beautiful is not just on the sign when you enter the state for no reason. Alabama is renowned for its outdoor scenery.

My wife and I have traveled from Maryland to Fairhope multiple times and it has quickly become our favorite vacation spot. It’s beautiful, the people are friendly as hell, the gulf towns aren’t far away and it’s affordable. It’s our dream to move down there full time one day.

My friend was driving through south, she had a small Biden 2020 sticker and the hicks from that town harassed her and her daughters. I wish other residents helped her but looked away. Good oly boy network. They are hypocrites in that town. I don't call them down to earth people.
As a born mobilian: The Delta is a national treasure. The oaks along Government/Dauphin/Airport/Old Shell/Springhill are spectacular. A true treasure. The people are as lazy, bigoted, and racist as any in the western world. The vast majority of the state is a polluted shit show. It deserves it’s bad reputation.
It’s because most of are wealthy have earned it. They put in the work and didn’t just inherit it. It makes a huge difference in someone’s personality.
I'm from Chicago area and made my first trip to Alabama about 15 years ago. I tell a lot of people about how beautiful it is, unfortunately most of the time it just goes in one ear and out the other, need to go there for yourself and experience it. It's the people that make or break a place.

My daughter lived in Alabama for 11 months. I am Hispanic, and my children were born here. All I experienced while she was there were people who enjoyed simple pleasures and can do a mean cookout😊

Hi Peter, I am from the UK and next February I'll be doing a 5 month road trip round the USA with my wife. I watch a lot of your videos for ideas for places to visit, and I can tell you Fairhope will definitely be on the list!
We did a 5 month trip in 2017 covering a lot of the USA and I can say that American people were almost exclusively lovely to us, but in the South it was next level, people were so kind and welcoming regardless of colour or creed.

If you are in the area, we have beautiful beaches south of Fairhope in Orange Beach and Gulf Shores. About a 40-to-50-minute drive.
If you’re a history buff you can visit the USS Alabama, it’s a massive WW2 battleship. It might be a little detour but it’s definitely worth it. And be prepared for the weather, if you’re visiting in the summer stay hydrated. People not used to the humidity can get really bad heat exhaustion.
I think I can clear up a few things. I'm an actual resident of Fairhope and have lived here for the past 14 years of my life. I grew up across the bay in Mobile, AL and have been coming to Fairhope since the 1970's.After high school, I moved away and lived in North Alabama, Florida and North Carolina, I have been to California, New York etc. Ok, first things first, Doug did a great job and its pretty much exactly the way he represents it. However, to me there are TWO Fairhope s emerging and they are more or less divided by the highway that runs through the east part of town called Greeno rd. You could think of the western part of that divide as the nice bay houses on the shore ,older quaint neighborhoods and the "downtown" part that everyone loves and hears about. The eastern part is more shopping centers, apt complexes, and subdivisions with MANY more being planned everyday. This part used to be mainly farm lands and forest, but we are losing more of that everyday because so many are moving here. Now it wasn't always this way back in the 80s the bay side neighborhoods were mostly 2 bedroom cottages that people would come over from Mobile to stay in Doug mentions this in the video and I can vouch for the fact that back in the 90's,in Baldwin county there was no places to take a girl on a date. There were no Movie theaters, No Bowling alleys ,not many restaurants nothing really. You had to cross the bay and go to Mobile. That did keep home prices WAY down on this side of the bay. The last 10 or 15 years it has exploded here commercially and now people are moving here to live. This has made it harder on the natives though. To live in the "bay side" part of Fairhope, you have to have $$$$$ and that's no problem if you move here from California and you can afford to pay a million or so cause you sold your house out west and are flush with cash. It is a problem if you are middle class or below and dont already own a house or land. Now all of that to say, our founding town members were good people and portioned areas down by the bay to be used as parkland. So you aren't going to boxed off from the nice areas completely. Even the nicer homes down on the water have walkways that run along the bay, and my encounters have always been nice ones with the people who live in the houses. They dont care if you walk along the beach or sidewalk. Even had a guy tell me I could use his pier if I wanted to walk out and take a picture. I just wanted to kind of better highlight what was being seen in the video ,it is a pretty good place to live, fall through spring is absolutely gorgeous weather, summers are brutal hot, there are gators and sharks in the bay and the water gets a little contaminated after a good rain storm. Oh and the comments about the racism etc. are just silly, people wouldnt put up with that here. If that was tried you'd more likely have 10 people defending you. Fairhope has never been Klan territory. In fact when the original town founders showed up from mostly Midwest, there was already a community of freed slaves living just south of here. It has always been this kind of hippie ,artist laid back quiet type of place. If anyone has any other questions or anything I'd be happy to answer them. Thanks for coming down Peter and great video
My parents have a house a block away from the bay, walking distance to downtown. It’s a modest 3 bedroom, one story place. The place next door is maybe 2k square feet, if you include the non-connecting garage (not sure what the word is for that). Last year it sold for 1.7 million. Guarantee that place would have been listed for, at most, 125k in the 90s.
Same thing happened to my home town. Mostly Californians discovered it and moved here in droves the past decade. Median income is still $55k, yet average home price is over $500k. Younger locals can't buy homes and are forced to rent. Crime is increasing and taxes and cost of living is skyrocketing.
@@treyveston7965 around here renting a house isn't even affordable...if it's a decent price within city limits..its snatched up in a few days...the people coming from other areas to live are making the rentals skyrocket because they are renting houses until they can find something to buy or they are waiting until they get a house built
So sad to see this happening in so many places. My kids buying a house, or heck even myself a new place, not in the cards right now where they grew up. Sad. But shows, and comments, like this offer insight where maybe to go.

From Alberta, Canada, and spent a week in Fairhope last summer visiting family. I gotta say, it is the most charming, friendly and absolutely beautiful community! Everywhere I went, people were easy to talk to and very chill. The art scene is everywhere. I could easily call it home.
Alabama resident here, our state is probably one of the most underrated in my opinion! Lots of people like to point out the negative, but there are plenty of places in Alabama that are just SO nice and relaxing. We have (small) mountains, tons of rivers, beaches, lakes, and mild winters. Plus tons of industry in north Alabama
What about the weather? Tornados, storms, flooding?
No life threatening flooding, unless you live on a river which would be dumb. Tornado season can get busy. A 2" snow once every 3-4 years (in center Alabama). Fairhope deals with hurricanes sometimes. Not too long ago a brutal hurricane hit the town and boats were everywhere from being torn off people docks. @@regaininglife9084

Worked producing convention shows nationwide for 20 years, did over 3,000 TV & Radio shows, worked ten years to get through college many degrees, working as a meat cutter for Kroger, (thank God for Kroger, getting me through all that college), went to Alabama as a kid and even many decades ago it was then and now "Alabama The Beautiful." Was a professor in Conn., Pa. & New Jersey, and still enjoyed going to Alabama, Birmingham Metro, is rolling hills, mountains, deep valley's, Huntsville in Rocket City, love every part of this state and traveled to most the world and have enough money to live where my wife and I want, but there is something about Alabama that is special. The Gulf Shores & Orange Beach area of Alabama is to die for with white powder beaches and most friendly people in the world. The state is also over 78% tree cover, hardwoods from Montgomery north to the mountains and below that area is the Pine Level. Trees everywhere! Alabama is also growing and the new car industry is now in the top three nationwide in total new car production. Alabama is also one of the most biodiverse state in the nation. The state has over 132,000 miles of inland waterways, which is number one in the nation. Something most people don't understand is that Alabama is for sure one of the most biologically diverse states too, as I lived in Missouri for 26 years and been married now 55 years, but even Missouri does not come close in this either, as Alabama is one of the most diverse in species, with 6,350 and counting. You have to go to Alaska to beat the diversity. Over the years, my wife and I wanted to escape "The City Of Brotherly Love", as the weather was crappy and the people for sure crappy and not friendly. So, after doing all those thousands of TV & Radio shows and then my nationally syndicated TV series news inserts seen daily called "Making Ends Meet Cooking" on network affiliates in Canada, U.S., including ABC in Hawaii and CBS in Alaska and also in Alabama on ABC and in the Virgin Island too! When seen in Alabama a food chain called Bruno's/Food World then in six states, called me in Phila., and said "we want you in Alabama." Well, I said "I would crawl to get to Mobile", and Mr. Bruno, "said Jon we watch you in the news every day and we will fly you down in one of our two jets." He made me an offer I could not refuse, so-to-speak and after writing now eight best sellers with Pyramid, Jove, Dell/Random House and now my own publishing company on food, now others including "Birmingham's Best Restaurants Cookbook" and a novel and then producing many hundreds of convention shows, nine in Alabama cities and across America. So, all that travel brought about one more book on Alabama. I wrote three best selling editions of "Alabama's Best Restaurants Cookbook", with 55 pages of travel destinations you must see in Alabama, and the ten year best seller has micro-breweries, and the wine trail and even the antique trail, as anything you put craft beer or wine in it just makes it better! So, as strange as it seems my wife and I chose to live in this friendly and most beautiful state where the people and weather if mostly friendly. Alabama people understand and love this diverse state. By the way, whites and blacks get along better down south and in Alabama than any northern state, we know, we lived there for years too!

I am canadian and I remember back in '99, I was in Orlando Florida for an international rugby tournament and myself and a few of the boys on the team were at a bar one night and we met this group of guys and gals that were chattin us up, real friendly. We asked "where are they from? and they mentioned L.A. and we all looked at each other perplexed because they definitely sounded "southern", then one of the guys said "Lower Alabama" ..lol. That house being built at 2:50 is in my family. I'm 30, my mother is in her 60s, my grandfather is in his 80s. My great grandparents bought that property when Fairhope wasn't discovered. It used to be a tiny little home with two bedrooms. Finally, my grandfather decided to redo the place, as our family is growing. Turns out, and I had local tell me this in that Grand Hotel Bar, that my family has a lot more history there than most. However, I guess we are just are just the wealthy people from out of state. All that said, Fairhope is beautiful. I hope you enjoyed your time down there.

Funny how there was a slightly ironic judgment about the redoing of that house amidst all the claiming that everybody knows everybody, yet they did not know (or at least if they did, they didn't articulate) that it was being redone by a family with longstanding roots in the area.
As a black man who went to college in AL but now resides on the east coast, I would say AL is way more welcoming. There’s racism and discrimination, but it’s worse on the east coast. In AL you know where to go and ppl have general respect and let you know, on the east coast they’ll smile and act like they aren’t racist and will be the biggest bigot. I love the South!

There is less racism in the south than California or New York. That doesn't grab the headlines so they keep telling the story that was relevant 100 years ago. Dwight Yokom has a song I Sang Dixie. A true song about an experience he had in L.A. pretty much sums it up

Your videos shed light on the fact that people outside the US only see a tiny sliver of the people in our country. Thank you for these videos. A lot of us live normal lives and simply live our day to day doing what we can.

People outside the US see only those aspects of America that mainstream media chooses to present. Mainstream media originates, for the most part, in Hollywood, New York and Washington, DC. Media content originating in New York is concerned almost solely with money. With exceptions, media content originating in DC and Hollywood is a distorted picture of America produced by people whose primary motivation is to futher their own political agenda. Don't you believe it! Peter shows America as it truly is. I am 65 and I have lived my entire life in the intermountain West of America. I can say from personal experience that Peter's short documentaries about cattle ranching on the high plains of Colorado, about the tension between locals and newcomers in Montana and Idaho, about the Mexican border in Texas and Arizona and every other short documentary Peter has produced about the West are each crystal clear, unbiased portrayals of his subject. I personally believe Peter should win the Academy Award for his 2023 documentary interview of Yuma County [Arizona] Sheriff Leon Wilmot, which Peter conducted during an all-day "ride along" with Sheriff Wilmot at the Mexican border below Yuma. That is not likely to happen, though, because Peter did not adopt the approved Leftist view of the border situation. He simply portrayed his subject as it is, and truth does not win an Academy Award.

I’m a FL transplant (1971) born in Springfield, MO, Queen City of the Ozarks. To ME, Southwestern Missouri is the absolute center of what America is about. Mountains that r not like the Appalachians, history like the old west, Tablerock Lake and many others, cows grazing, corn growing, trains whistling day & night, multiple colleges, with art & foodie culture nowadays. Branson is a huge deal over the past few decades, but during my childhood it was a gas station or 2 off of the main 2 lane Hwy! U must visit! It’s where my maternal grandparents lived their 72 yr marriage & where my Mom & I were born, so it will always be home!
Thanks for teaching me that word, fernweh. I know exactly the feeling. When I was 14 my dad went on a business trip to Europe and took me. Landed in Frankfurt and stayed in a youth hostel in Essen. Then from there went on a month long trip through Holland, Brussels, Paris, Lyon, French Alps. 35 years later I still think fondly of that trip. Fernweh is the right word to encompass all of that.
Yeah but a lot of stereotypes are true. Very few walkable places in the US, it’s a luxury, not mainstream.

Discovered Fairhope Alabama last year. Just decided to get off the highway and go see. Fell in love with the place! Had lunch...did a little shopping in some cool shops....looked around a bit. If it weren't for the heat and humidity I might already be living there. ❤

Longtime AL resident here. Fairhope is incredible. One of the more scenic coastal towns I have visited in the US. I would add that Alabama has a variety of scenery: much of the northern portion is mountains.

My friend went to Alabama about 20 years ago just to holiday there from the UK and she absolutely loved it. She is a people watcher and she just loved the place
I moved to Alabama from Illinois about eight and a half years ago. It was the best decision I ever made, it’s absolutely beautiful here and the people are so genuine. Fairhope is one of my wife’s favorite towns. This is where I’ll die.

We moved from Arizona to Spanish Fort five years ago, which is just north of Fairhope.
This man is spot on, everybody here is friendly and more than willing to help you out . The stigma about Alabama being a racist state is overblown, everybody treats, everybody down here with respect.
My wife and I have a saying “ we thought we were a nice people when we moved here, we actually have to be nicer”
It's easy to say racism is scarce here in Alabama but it's easy to say no one hates grizzly bears at the North Pole. Since non white people hear all the bad things about Alabama, they won't want to live there, therefore the racism is reduced.
I was born and raised in California. Spent the first 48 years of my life there. The wife and I moved to Alabama 2 years ago and we absolutely love it. We are in a small town between Tuscaloosa and Birmingham and have no plans of leaving. We are having fun exploring and learning about our new home. I would love to experience the things in this video and more. It's a different world that what we knew in the West.

My friend Bama in high school, was always so proud of where he was from we didn’t even know his real name for the longest! 😂 We lived in Oregon, and he was one of the first people from Alabama I’ve met, such a sweet and funny soul. He passed away back in his home state in 2019, I will always think of him. Roll Tide!

I've have heard from many people around the state, the country, and the world and the feedback has been fantastic. I still find it hard to comprehend how so very different each state and county can be from each other and how huge the US is I love these insights you provide, I work for a US company and speaking with my colleagues I find it surprising how little most people have travelled and explored their own country , you would never need a European vacation in your lifetime if you chose to explore what the US has to offer, keep up the great work Peter absolutely brilliant.
