Im a Black street dude fresh outta federal prison and this song was stuck in my head the whole 7 years I was incarcerated.. I fuckin love this song!! I saw the video the night before I went to prison.. This is a vintage rock and roll video.. I just found it tonight by typing the lyrics.. Music is universal!!

This is one of my favorite songs to play along with. His style is so precise and propulsive.
He's probably one of the most skilled and educated rock drummers out there.
I always cry at the part where he says "when there's a doubt within your mind, cause you're thinking all the time, framing right into wrongs' i feel that as someone who struggles with anxiety.

Listened to this song when I was 15, now I am 25, I am back 10 years later, as a whole new person haha. Just goes to show how good this song is and how it has impacted me during my teen years. I was a clueless, lost, unmotivated teen back then, super depressed, this song taught me to live my life to the fullest. I am so glad I am doing so much better and happier :)
Same!! This song was my life’s theme song. Every time I experienced a huge difficulty that changed the person I was, this would always bring me back to my true self. And I still get goosebumps from it!

The song was shot in one single take from one run through of the song, like a live concert. It was originally going to be one single long SHOT followed by some shorter shots at the end, but we decided to break it up to help transition between our set pieces, because we had a lot of ground to cover. I was one of the camera operators and we practiced about 40 takes over a 2 day period and then the last take was the live one. Personally, one of my favorite takes was one of the 40 earlier ones :)

Imho, Ben Gibbard is one of the greatest songwriters of all time, and Death Cab is one of the greatest indie bands of all time.

Gibbard is a true Genius. The arrangements of his songs, both in DCab & his other projects are quantimum layered with goodness & musical attention to the meanings. There are notes that are crucially not played, that dance, as well as the perfect counterpoint harmony notes arriving just at the right time. A true wizard, a true star. Plus his music & words make me feel like dancing & contemplating the mandalas of life at the same time. Very yummy. Hitting replay again!

I think he meant if you remove the word 'indie' they are just among the greatest bands of all time, and i have to agree, many of their songs make me cry, many of their songs make me laugh, I've been listening to them for about 15 years now, and i saw them live for the first time about 2 weeks ago in Amsterdam, it was the best thing i've ever seen live, it was an outdoor concert in the middle of the woods. it was amazing.

I think music critics often tend to make things more complicated than they actually are in order to detach themselves from the mass and establish as a cultural elite. The thing is, when you have a pop rock song that manages to strike such a perfect balance between accessible and articulate, you have a masterpiece. Things are really that simple sometimes

The moment I heard the lyrics " if you feel just like a tourist in the city you were born
Then it's time to go", I was hooked. Ever since, this song has become one of the most personal songs to me, because this is exactly how I felt like, even in my own city. I was jaded, everything felt like a routine, and I just wanted to get out. I remember being able to really understand this when I was on a boat in Thailand, sailing from one island to the other, I then realized that the world is so vast and mysterious. I then knew I wanted to just go out there and discover it.

It’s tough not fitting into a culture that you’re told is yours but you know it’s not deep down, so you feel like there’s something wrong with you. Rejected, forgotten, unloved, and broken - people love doing that to others.

I’m coming back to this song after almost 10 years. This was one of my favorites during my junior and senior years of high school and I was in love with the lyrics and really every single aspect of this song.
I’m listening to it now in my mid 20’s, full of constant anxiety and working a dead end job in the same city I’ve spent my entire life in. This song is even more relatable than it was when I was 16 wanting to leave home.

This one really resonates with me on all levels. Timeless. Fantastic lyrics and just a great, great song. Just as good today as when it originally came out, if not better, and more relevant. Yeah, this hits pretty close to home for me in a big way.
I do remember when this first came out and it was as fun as everyone says! Bands like this are hard to come by now a days. Now they’re stuck underground!! Bring back bands!
There's still a lot of great bands around, but Pop culture and shows like American Idol have molested the creative and original part of music into the shadows.
@@jasonrowland2458 I also add the music industry to that, I felt like when I was younger, more music was creative, sure some bands sounded like another, but the lyrics didn't sound the same. I might be one of many who thinks music in the 70's and especially 80's was the best, the 90's was okay.

Pranav Dave agreed. I'm not a huge deathcab fan (Transatlanticism is a masterpiece that I think is impossible for them to come close to) but this really is one of their finest moments. I think it gets overlooked because the album it's on isn't very good.
I guess it depends what ur into. Musically? Meh, its alright. If u look for a particular phrase or lyrics as a whole that resonate with u in songs and this does it for u, then i understand that. It doesn't do much for me lyrically, not to say its bad. But that mixed with the meh-ness of it musically doesnt do it for me. Only song i find i like of death cab for cutie is soul meets body, it has feeling behind it not only in the words but the music and melody itself

This song came on in a grocery store one day and like a jackass I assumed it was 21 Pilots. I began searching forever and was relieved to have finally found it. And even more relieved that it was by these guys and not the other one.

Upon hearing DCFC for the first time I pondered which category of rock they fall into. I tried to think of a band they'd compare to. I quickly realized...there's no other band that falls into THEIR category. So underrated.
They're an indie band, but they have a fairly unique sound and stand out, they're not generic

Honestly one of the better videos I've ever seen, all that stuff about all their albums, the fact that the ideas in this song hit home for me, the one take aspect. Ben went hard with the intro, Walla and Jason go so hard at 3:14, Harmer does the walk at 0:49. Death Cab thanks for going hard again.

First time I ever heard this song I believe. Seems to hit hard to many people. Heartache mentioned in the comments is accurate at certain key points in the Lyrics. One hell of a mixture the lyrics take me on a ride through my core structure you could say .Songs hit everyone uniquely yet similar common threads also . The music, lyrics, dancing, and the visuals each contain their own unique logic stream which merge into a larger overall structure. This song was done very well and that seems an inadequate compliment . God hides inside good songs. That's about the best compliment I can give a song . Thank you .

I was born and raised in "The OC" area of Southern California. Left in 1983 to join the Navy and was sent to Hawaii for 5 yrs. Got out and ended up living near Yellowstone National Park. Whenever I returned to visit So Cal, Hawaii or Idaho, I am a tourist.

Remember watching this when they streamed it live. I was hooked then, the song continues to be one of my favourites from the past ten years. And the drums ARE amazing on this; the recording, the patterns and the playing style. This song pulls off being uplifting whilst having fairly depressing lyrics with a glint of hope, and I think that's the icing on the cake. A very clever song, brilliantly executed.
