This song is like that first sign of happiness after depression
the guitarist is my 2nd cousin and he loves singing this song for us
@@teedoggie tell him the world loves him for us wont you hun???
;((()))))))))))))) yes yes yes
Truth
it will beee OK!!!!!!!!!!
I love how the inspiration for this song was just that the lead singer was tired of writing depressing songs and wanted to write a happy one for a change of pace.
Ironically, this song also became their most well known and their biggest hit.
Are you sure about that? I always thought the person saying “dont worry its all gonna be alright” in front of the sheep lining up for the slaughter was supposed to be kinda tongue in cheek?
@@LedZeppeli Yeah, pretty damn sure, considering the lead singer said so in an interview.
Me too rorshach me too
@@LedZeppeli the lead singer wrote this after his two best friends passed away. The sheep being taken to the slaughterhouse is an allusion to that. He wrote this song because he was super depressed and dealing with substance abuse too and in his words he "wanted to just feel good for a day"

In all honesty, the song didn't even make a top 50 showing on the hot 100 charts.
@@johnwhite1321 that's because the "Hot 100" and "Top 50" are based on mostly hip hop and pop. Not punk rock, pop punk, rock, or metal. Your opinion is invalid because unless you're already famous or part of the agenda, you'll never make a list like that in America. Wheatus was SUPER famous in other countries because Americans couldn't get over the fact they mentioned a "gun in school", but 'Pumped Up Kicks' literally talks about shooting other kids and that made it on the Top 100. Stop glorifying people if you can't even figure out the past
I hated this song at 16 but at 36 it's my favorite song. It's amazing what 20 years of life can teach you.
A few years back i was stuck in my home town in GA, ended up losing where I was staying, the girl I was seeing and my job in the span of two days. Ended up getting a pack on craigslist and went off to hitchhike to CO. Had a friend drop me off on the side of the road out in the boonies and I started my long walk. After the first bend this song came on my head phones and I remember just crying my eyes out, feeling the weight of those past years slide off of me and all the potential of a new adventure in front of me. This song always hits me hard.

I was a cashier at Zupan's on Belmont in 2013-14 and always loved when Isaac Brock came through my grocery line despite me losing the ability to speak out of sheer star struckness in the presence of his majestic artist self. I wish I woulda tried to be his friend as I saw him and had the chance to speak to him often, the most that came out was that I loved his music. I always thought he was the hottest creature on earth and his music has saved me many a times out of the depths of darkness. Thank you Isaac and Modest Mouse, you rules the roast forever.

There’s an underlying sadness to this song and I can’t quite understand it, but i know it’s there
The singer/songwriter wrote this not long after two close friends of his passed away. This song is more of a hopefully reassurance as opposed to a genuine sense of contentment.
This song is about when life gets you down it will get better eventually
To me it meant to be optimistic in life. I listen to it a lot when I'm feeling depressed and rather out of hope.
lizylu it is about death, a very metaphorical song.
The beginning is a stage, symbolic for life being one large play. The sheep are symbolic for not only what is happening consistently in the world (hu-men killing animals) but also represents us as humanity. We are the sheep being fed to the wolves. Although there is nothing wrong with the sheep, that is just the scenario they have been placed under or over (to overstand what is going on rather than understand) They are singing or mouthing we'll all float on signifying their reassurance, then the man takes the sheep and kills them. However we will all float on and everything will be ok. In a way the sheep do not have free will to decide when they die or what happens to them, they are being decided on by the man however it's ironic because the man also does not choose and is part of the system which will eventually do the same to him. It's only sad or bad if you look at it as that way. You could also see it as a beautiful thing because being alive only means you have time to experience. When you die everything comes full circle and there is no time to be had or wasted. Everyone is the way they always were. And that's why we will all float on alright. We will all make it to the end of the tunnel and it's a beautiful thing if you allow yourself to experience it in that way.
I wept like a baby when I saw you perform this in Santa Fe last night...I was with my son, and it was the first big tune he mastered on the drums. I listened to him practice for months! Wonderful show. Thank you for the music & the message.
Thank you for this. It helped me through my PTSD. Y’all, we will all float on! ❤

The comments on this video are pretty ironic, people remembering their past, how they originally found this song. About better times, but this song is actually about moving on after bad things and how we all just move on after all bad things. "Floating on."
We all have our troubles, but we will all float on okay, don't you worry. Even if things end up a bit heavy, we will all float on.
At least that's how I interpret it.
Music Chanimal I take it sarcastically now. I used to interpret it as not having a worry. Now I interpret it as a warning to those pursuing pleasure and escapism. The animal farm and Orwellian theme of the video give me this vibe. The fact that the animals are being led to slaughter while happily matching has this forbidding undertone.
I’m not in any way negating your interpretation. I actually came down here to bounce this theory off someone else and you seemed like an open mind to do that with.
Granted, I could easily be biased because of my past and my own mess-ups in life. I just wanted to share that idea though.
Thanks for reading. :)
@@DaughtersofOrion That sounds like a pretty good interpretation as well! I didn't expect any actually well-thought out comments to respond to anything I said, let alone a popular song.
I haven't been around very much but I understand where you come from, the fact the song is about moving on while the animals slaughtered have nowhere to move onto makes sense in my mind as well. I didn't think about it that way until you brought it up, thanks!
It's rare getting a reply that isn't just a blind agreement or disagreement, so thanks!
@@LBFMUSICA Thank you as well! I thought I had it all figured out but your comment got me thinking that I might be biased from my own life experiences. It's always good exchanging ideas!

The most overplayed song that does not get old. We all need to float on sometimes. If you watched this depressed, something in the sheep waiting for slaughter makes you feel warm inside. It can be worse, but you cannot control some outcomes so why fret. Focus on what you can control and enjoy the ride while you can, and let love grow as you do it.
1:40 The line, "Well, we'll float on, good news is on the way" actually saved my life, as silly as that sounds.

Depression: gone reduced to atoms

If only it were so easy. For me this song brings such bittersweet memories that it can induce a major depressive episode. I was choking back tears. Not sure why I thought I could handle it, but it’s been so long since I heard it I definitely didn’t think I’d feel this way either.

The entire song is beautiful but this quote in particular is something I come back to a lot. You can only fuck up so many times before things eventually get better.
Something about the coments here just makes me want to give all you a hug and tell you that you are family and I love you.
This was one of the first songs I learned to sing by heart when I was a kid and heard it on the radio. Recently, a drunk driver hit the bus that I'd spent a year fixing up for my band to use. The most frustrating part about the accident was losing strength in my singing voice after a couple months of recovering from the accident. Randomly had a hankering to listen to this song, and it's the first time since the accident that my singing voice felt strong and inspired again.
Just had to share after wiping a flood of tears from my eyes. This song really does make me feel like despite everything, it's gonna be okay.

Remember driving around for hours and hours in the indiana countryside with my first love to this song. I remember how in love we were and how beautiful that was. Being 16 and having no where to be and nothing to be worried about. The endless sea of grass. I'd just have my hand on her thigh while we drove forever. Those are some of the moments I cherish most in this life. We dated for 2 years and she found someone else. Spent a lot of time hating her for that. I'm 21 now and I'm just starting to feel a little better about it. I couldn't listen to this song for so long, and now I'm going through some serious issues with my current partner. This song really reminds me of the impermanence of life. Those fleeting, beautiful moments that sometimes get overshadowed by the inevitable periods of pain and suffering. It's taken me a long time to come to realize my life is not just one long, cruel joke. Those moments have value. Even if they don't always last. I miss being 16 in that endless sea of grass. It'll be okay though, anyway.

I always tear up with this song. It's one of the best songs for a bad day.

Lmao
I'm not sure anyone will ever read this or understand. But my late sister, whom I miss dearly, listened to modest mouse long before they became popular. I remember when this song came out, I thought, man my sister has good taste in music. I miss her so much but I know she's floating on alright :)
Im so sorry to hear :'(
Read it and cared. R.I.P
Whatever, you should feel proud for being a brother to a hipster.
rest in pepperoni
RIP bro, positive vibes from here
O.m.g Pixies ,Cat and Modest Mouse. I cannot wait. Holy shit
Rest in Peace, Mr. Jeremiah. Float on, Float on...
the way i describe this song to people is by saying: "it's like that one part of a song that everyone agrees is the best part. but it's like the whole song."
this song makes me feel better anytime i listen to it
me to, it lets me know theres sill hope for good music somewhere out there
totaly
bucky468 why are you so pretentious? :/ just let people enjoy what they want
bucky468 everyone has their opinion, but we don't need to hear yours
Then you can keep that to yourself, because there are people who enjoy this genre and songs like this are comforting. Thats like me saying that all rock music sucking suck and should burn in hell. That would be my opinion, and you wouldn't agree with me. You're an adult act like one, and shut your trap. Negativity is a burden to everyone.
Im sharing this unwantedly with my neighbours 😂😂😂😂😂
Me to buddy
The nostalgia this song had is crazy
I remember my beloved son Jaron who past away in 2005 at age 26 playing this song quite a bit. So Float On is very special for me. Plus it's great catchy tune. So thanks Modest Mouse!
This song is special to so many people. Theres just something about it that makes people happy and sad at the same time.
I’m sorry I lost my dad 7 months ago when I was 16 it hurts so much
Lost my almost-son-in-law at 25 yo. It was 11 yrs ago and I still come back and listen to this song he loved. Something very special about it to many.
😥
Godspeed for Jaron...Peace and prayers for you and yours.
