I looked them up in UA-cam's infancy, or possibly even limewires end stages, and this is what I found. Great times.
Marriage struggles are not fun. The lyrics of this song are not only beautiful, but they have healing power. Seriously. When two people are married, have been married before and are at an emotional crossroads, "I do believe it's true that there are roads left in both of our shoes" and "You're the only song I want to hear, a melody softly soaring through my atmosphere" take on a whole new meaning. This might be the most beautiful song I've ever heard.
2009, my 8th grade teacher would play Death Cab for Cutie during class along with the Fray. He always raved about them. I always thought they were strange names for bands but my 13 year old brain couldn’t comprehend rock at the time. I was listening to Gucci Mane/rap and Drum & Bass at the time. Everything was hype hype hype when I was younger. Now at 25, I’ve explored many different musical avenues and now just going back in time to hear what the noise was. Turns out some of these melancholic indie songs were relatable and there was much more than just rap. Thanks Mr. Giuliano. Hope you and my 7th grade teacher are still happily married and raising your children well!
September 2023 and we're still here.. I pray everyone who reads this reaches their goals and find the true meaning of love, purpose, and fulfillment. All will be ok. One love
Ronan RiemanJohns The lyrics are really simple compared to the other artists out there. It's actually very easy to understand. Also, simple lyrics doesn't mean that it's worse.
Ronan RiemanJohns Lyrics are meant to be interpreted however you want. It seems like you're not someone who's into music. Also, your grammar is horrendous.
this song helped me in my darkest most difficult times when I suffered intense trauma and abuse. Happy it exists to make me feel alive and have tears of joy that everything is gonna be okay cause I'm free.
@@yucatansuckaman5726 some songs are very powerful...and is true that they can give a person strength and faith to get threw a very bad patch in life....
After losing both of my parents, this song took on a whole new meaning for me. Music has always been there for me and helped me to get through the hardest of times.
I love this song so much. The first 2 verses I relate to with traits of my ADHD ("I send my thoughts to far off destinations") and the hook reminds me of my husband, who understands me so well. "So brown eyes I'll hold you near, cuz you're the only song I want to hear." And the last line is exactly how I feel my husband's presence and love in my life: "a melody softly soaring through my atmosphere." He's everywhere, gently, letting me be me but existing all around and alongside me. It's a beautiful song.
Okay, so. My boyfriend and I broke up. I would cry to this song, "[...]and I do believe it's true that there are roads left in both of our shoes[...]". I let go and accepted the Creaator makes changes. I had to accept whatever that meant for the both of us. Truth be told. There is a creator. No, that is not us. A wisdom far beyond our own. Two years later, we returned together. We've been married for 17 years now. We now stomp the ground under our feet together - hard. It's not just us in this relationship. Our Creator comes first, His word of instructions are far beyond ours. (Y'sha - restores life).
Everyone's talking about how this song brings back memories of what they were doing when it first came out years ago. But i only heard this song for the first time this week, and even i feel a deep familiarity with it. Like it's bringing up nostalgia for nothing in particular. This song speaks directly to the soul.
10 years later and I still love this song. The first DCFC song I ever listened to back in 2005 and made me a fan of the band. Still remember watching the music video for this on MTV 2 while getting ready to go to class.
I heard it it 2010 when i was disconvering myself and what kind of taste was mines... Jonas Brothers just broke up... you will find out that i discovered indie like a inmature girl
I am middle aged and was a teen in the 90's. I seriously thought this was a missing early 90's song I missed in the midst of Catherine Wheel, Verve and Adorable. I was so amazed it was made in 2009. These guys captured PEEK 90's British alternative.
I believe it was in 2006. I was taking courses at the university on the weekend for my degree and was playing this on my way in my car early mornings. I can remember hearing this tune all day long.
Lyrics: I want to live where soul meets body And let the sun wrap its arms around me, And bathe my skin in water cool and cleansing And feel... feel what it's like to be new. 'Cause in my head There's a Greyhound station Where I send my thoughts To far-off destinations So they may have a chance Of finding a place where they're Far more suited than here. I cannot guess what we'll discover When we turn the dirt with our palms cupped like shovels, But I know our filthy hands can wash one another's And not one speck will remain. I do believe it's true That there are roads left in both of our shoes, But if the silence takes you Then I hope it takes me too. So brown eyes, I'll hold you near, 'Cause you're the only song I want to hear. A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere. Where soul meets body. Where soul meets body. Where soul meets body. And I do believe it's true That there are roads left in both of our shoes, But if the silence takes you Then I hope it takes me too. So brown eyes, I'll hold you near, 'Cause you're the only song I want to hear. A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere. A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere. A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere. A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere.
@@kellyparkinson8594 for sure. I heard an early 90's song when I was in an elevator the other day. It was found out about you by the gin blossoms. I bought that CD when it came out. Then I remembered being a kid and making fun of my mom for hearing a song that came out when she was a kid when we were in an elevator together. Damn. What goes around comes around I guess.
Megan and I use to live exactly where this song describes. I lost my wife to cancer 3 months ago. A beautiful vibrant young woman. The center of my universe. I want to go be with her soon.

This song brings me an electric chill, an eye full of tears both of sadness and happiness. Hard to believe this song is 20 years old . ❤❤❤ To everyone still listening
Some critic once said a great song begins many times. This song is a masterpiece with several initiations, refocusing of emotion + energy, as if softly shifting to new realms.
Got a girlfriend just by playing and singing this song once. She turned out to be a psycho and bear me a daughter who I have custody of... Best time of my life! Thanks Death Cab!!
I was all serious, then read this lol oh bro, the stories we all have eh but some of us always tend to get those crazy stories lol I one of them too. Enjoy your daughter!!
Used to sing this song as a lullaby to my baby boy from 2004 when he was born to several years later. He used to call it the 'bada song'. This song was a saving grace for me being a single dad dealing with the loneliness. Music bridged the gap for me to keep going, and this helped a ton.
To the youngsters who are lamenting the lack of quality in today's music, there's lots of good music out there but you ain't going to find it on the radio.
Im a yung jimminy willikerz, im not really "with" fhe other teens cause i always listen to indie and non mainstream bands except for some well known ones(tøp). :)
You know... I remember sitting in my prison cell at night but hearing this song come on the radio made me feel like I was free for a moment. It's nice to listen to it as a free man.
It's a great song, even better that you got to hear it as a free man again... keep it that way lovely, be good, be happy be free, stay out of that place 🤩
Before my brother got out of prison after a 10 year .. I would play him Clint Eastwood by gorilla's I played him this one as well. If you know the the chorus " I'm happy feeling glad sunshine bag ... im useless BUT not for long my future is coming on...
I heard this playing in Trader Joes this morning and it brought some joy back. Its a sign. This is the best group ever! I reckon they channelled their songs. I bought this album in 2005 in NZ. Im 77 now and I love this music. And then twelve years ago I moved from NZ to NorCal. ( Stupid is as stupid does) My next move would have been Bellingham WA. Far out. These guys are brilliant.
I've been replaying this song for the last two weeks over and over and over and over again. I cannot get enough of it. It has all of the feeling in it. it's amazing. I feel it's too short
I hadn't listened to Death Cab for like 6 years or so. Now I'm back and I remember why I started listening to them. So dope. This song gives me REM vibes.

I am 41 and I consider myself a music lover of all types but I just discovered this band …and I’m like WHAT IVE BEEN NOT LISTENING TO THEM??? 😭 I am obsessed
I see a lot of teens and young adults remembering when this song was released and their memories about it. I’m no longer a teen, almost in my 45 and just heard this song today while driving and loved it right away. Good thing Shazam helped me save it! Such a gorgeous song, poetic lyrics, simply magic! Congrats to the band! “ A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere” just love this 🥰
My daughter got me listening to this band when she was in college in 2006. Still do in 2024! With a new grandbaby from kid way out of college now. Hes gonna love it too!
Just got a ticket to see these guys in my city this summer. Even though I'll be going alone and I don't know more than 3-4 of their songs, I know I'm gonna have a great time just because of this masterpiece alone. It's gonna be my first time at a band show... can't wait
Saw them in Dallas 9 years ago. Absolutely amazing song. The buildup for I Will Possess Your Heart was astonishing. I hope and know you’ll have a blast!!
This song recently helped me get through one of the most powerfully depressing points of my life and helped me realize my current favorite type of music. I have no words that are strong enough to thank you with for making this song. The discovery of this song happened very close to the upturn in how I felt.
I can relate brotha...lost true love I it was me who mostly blew it. Didn't have to be that way...I went through Hell with the realization she's gone. This song helped.
@Justin Rios bullshit, music is medicine. Depression is the deactivation of neuronal activity and chemical changes often brought about through big life changes. Music, particularly music that you enjoy releases endorphins and oxytocin that can elevate your mood and sense of well being. It absolutely can help with depression.
The arrangement chord progression and melody really make this song, not to mention the refrain. uhh divine songs like this really make you feel alive. I know our filthy hands can wash one another.
Anyone remember watching music videos on MTV before school as a child and seeing this video? Circa early 2000s? Remembering this melody from that time period is what has me here now, as a 29 year old 🔥🙏🏾 I love this song and video
+mjkmojofool I too am 60 years young. I grew up & came of age listening to The Beatles & Motown, Led. Zepp., EW&F, Disco, Funk, Jazz, Dylan, Prince, Metallica, Merle Haggard, Miles.... in the 1960's-1980's...but this has/is one of the best & most memorable pieces of poetry I've ever heard.
I beat you both. I'm 65 and I too grew-up on so many greats, from Dylan to the Allmans and these guys like a few others give me hope for the future. Adam Duritz, Jacob Dylan, Mumford, Damien Rice and the Avett Brothers write poetry.
Ah HA! but I beat all three of you. I'm at the tender age of 81 and I remember when Guns n Roses got back together. This song brings me back to my years riddled with acid bandanas and nitrous brownies. To be young again!
"so brown eyes, I hold-you-near, cus you're the on-ly song I want-to-hear" ..this gets me every time. So much nostalgia over past loves, each one forever special to me in their own way, in their own corner of my heart. Not sure why that line triggers that reaction, but it always has. I've been with some really really dope women and I will never forget any of you.
This is, imo, one of the greatest indie-pop-rock songs ever made. It brings a sound that is simultaneously layered and textured, yet simple, and the lyrics are brilliant. It is a timeless piece of music that has stood the test of time, and always will.
My best friend passed away and shortly after I asked her where she was while I was praying. This song started to play on the radio right after and I knew it was her answer. She had brown eyes too so it fits perfectly.
Jennifer...This used to be my (and pups) song. His name was Bentley, a miniature Dachshund with big brown eyes...When I knew he was close to passing I wold hold him tight and listen to this with headphones in and break down crying like a child...I feel your pain
An old girlfriend gave me the Narrow Stairway CD years ago. I listened to it a couple of times but rediscovered it this week clearing out my old home. I listened to it three times this week already and have placed it next to my Liam Gallagher, Metric, Echo and the Bunnymen, Cream, Doors, Electronic CD's as a welcome addition. Im 60 and grew up on eighties alternative music and find Death Cab a nice fit to my existing tastes. I plan to explore their other music. -Steve Magnante
I know it's probably been said a million times over but this is a beautiful song. It reminds me of the first time I tried or wanted something blissful. Kind of like when I first meet a girl I like. I like the atmospheric sound too, it takes me to a different state of mind, just beautiful.

Sounds like an awesome teacher!
I'm a big hip hop head and this song is my jam
I love the drop at 2:07 “if the silence takes you, then I hope it takes me too” ❤️ one of my all time favorite songs

Best part of the song, for sure!
This is so good but you must hear “Winding Road” or “Live Not Survive” by SLT 🤘🎹🎧
Absolutely the best part
September 2023 and we're still here.. I pray everyone who reads this reaches their goals and find the true meaning of love, purpose, and fulfillment. All will be ok. One love
Thank you so much, one love indeed 💓✊
1:11 instant goosebumps for me. " If the silence takes you then I hope it takes me too". Love it!
You like simple lyrics over subtle ones?
shootingmen Aw, get off your high horse. It's a very good lyric, even if you don't understand it.
Ronan RiemanJohns The lyrics are really simple compared to the other artists out there. It's actually very easy to understand. Also, simple lyrics doesn't mean that it's worse.
Yes, I'm sure your interpretation of the lyrics was synonymous with the author's. Like I said, high horse.

Still one of the greatest songs in history
All of history. Factual.
I love this song. It has got a lot of soul if you know what I mean.
After losing both of my parents, this song took on a whole new meaning for me. Music has always been there for me and helped me to get through the hardest of times.
That's rough dude, God bless
My condolences.
Lost both of.mine last year as well. 2 months a part. 11/19/22 and 1/15/23
I love this song so much.
AGREED!!!
2:07 that chorus drop is pure killin it
shune84 XD love your work man
Absolutely! Love it too!
That's like 90% of the song for me, right there.
Directly stolen from the yes song ,changes,
Lol yea. Good art is like that.
I'm doing a split shift. I live in the woods. I'm worn out and now I feel love. Power of music. Glad this song is still being heard. It resonates.
Possibly one of the most artistic pieces ever written in this genra
Everyone's talking about how this song brings back memories of what they were doing when it first came out years ago. But i only heard this song for the first time this week, and even i feel a deep familiarity with it. Like it's bringing up nostalgia for nothing in particular. This song speaks directly to the soul.

My sister and I call these types of songs that have this effect "music from the universe"🌌
This
10 years later and I still love this song.
***** But .... if you die ... you couldn't listen to this song anymore :(.
Wow. I forgot MTV2 was even a thing..
I am middle aged and was a teen in the 90's. I seriously thought this was a missing early 90's song I missed in the midst of Catherine Wheel, Verve and Adorable. I was so amazed it was made in 2009. These guys captured PEEK 90's British alternative.
They're from Bellingham, WA. 😊❤️
I believe it was in 2006. I was taking courses at the university on the weekend for my degree and was playing this on my way in my car early mornings. I can remember hearing this tune all day long.

Lyrics:
I want to live where soul meets body
And let the sun wrap its arms around me,
And bathe my skin in water cool and cleansing
And feel... feel what it's like to be new.
'Cause in my head
There's a Greyhound station
Where I send my thoughts
To far-off destinations
So they may have a chance
Of finding a place where they're
Far more suited than here.
I cannot guess what we'll discover
When we turn the dirt with our palms cupped like shovels,
But I know our filthy hands can wash one another's
And not one speck will remain.
I do believe it's true
That there are roads left in both of our shoes,
But if the silence takes you
Then I hope it takes me too.
So brown eyes, I'll hold you near,
'Cause you're the only song I want to hear.
A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere.
Where soul meets body.
Where soul meets body.
Where soul meets body.
And I do believe it's true
That there are roads left in both of our shoes,
But if the silence takes you
Then I hope it takes me too.
So brown eyes, I'll hold you near,
'Cause you're the only song I want to hear.

Nostalgia, now I know how my parents feel when they hear 80’s music.
I wasn't even alive for the 80's but I have a ton of nostalgia for that era. Probably because so much of the media I consumed as a kid was from then
God I'm old

@@kellyparkinson8594 for sure. I heard an early 90's song when I was in an elevator the other day. It was found out about you by the gin blossoms. I bought that CD when it came out. I was living in Seattle when this came out and it was huge. They really take care of their bands there.
@Chadfield Clapsaddle The people of Seattle and the DJ's of the local radio stations.
@Chadfield Clapsaddle That was years ago but 107.7 The End was a radio station that comes to mind. DJ W. No Name was the best.
They have the best bands. Nirvana is still my favorite band of all time.
Some critic once said a great song begins many times. This song is a masterpiece with several initiations, refocusing of emotion + energy, as if softly shifting to new realms.
I agree - this song is incredible
I think Ashes of American Flags is a great example of that the way each verse becomes its own world
The BEST song ever!!!
Got a girlfriend just by playing and singing this song once. She turned out to be a psycho and bear me a daughter who I have custody of... Best time of my life! Thanks Death Cab!!

I'm 31 years old now, and the ethereal nature of this still makes my soul take flight like it did when I was a child. Absolutely beautiful
Exactly, I love discovering music. It's Like finding buried treasure.

He's a lyrical genius
It actually feels better to mean it to no one in particular, just imagining yourself deeply in love for a very brief moment then moving on.
I heard this playing in Trader Joes this morning and it brought some joy back. Its a sign. This is the best group ever! I reckon they channelled their songs. I bought this album in 2005 in NZ. I see a lot of teens and young adults remembering when this song was released and their memories about it. Congrats to the band! “ A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere” just love this 🥰

@@kylebos6442 I do. But I wouldn't put anything of theirs I know in the "favorite music" category.
"So brown eyes I'll hold you near,

I beat you both. I'm 65 and I too grew-up on so many greats, from Dylan to the Allmans and these guys like a few others give me hope for the future. Adam Duritz, Jacob Dylan, Mumford, Damien Rice and the Avett Brothers write poetry.
Ah HA! but I beat all three of you. I'm at the tender age of 81 and I remember when Guns n Roses got back together. This song brings me back to my years riddled with acid bandanas and nitrous brownies. To be young again!
