This song is the definition of nostalgia. I miss when I was younger, and I wish I could’ve cherished the time I had before I lost my chance. I’m pretty sure this is something we all deal with. As kids we wish we were older to be able to do what we want, but never realize that all we want is already there.
your gonna make me cry dude. im 19 and i cant fucking get over the fact that my childhood is j8st gone..where the hell did all those years go, i miss my grandpa, and i wish i never tried cocaine.😔
yeah honestly, I mean Im only 12 but I´m scared of growing up because I don´t wanna grow older and since I had a lot of trauma and I am mentally and physically older than most kids my age its hard to stay a kid and have fun. So now that I just realized this a few days ago I´ve been trying to cherish my childhood. But eventually I´ll have to. oh well. I just wanna have fun and not want the rest of my childhood to be a nightmare like some of it was.
I'm 42 years old, married, a beautiful wife who I will love till my last breath, 3 amazing children, a good career and relatively good health. Yet this song makes me want to go back and do it all over again, find my teenage self and let me know that all the pain you've experienced and still will in your 20's will be worth it in the end, that you'll be okay, you will.
@@TheLottolandus Oh my God. Is it being made? I loved that book so much. I think about it all the time. I know someone was working on it, but I thought it died in the can or whatever they say. Is it happening?!
I'm 21 now, and have spent plenty of nights doing *most* of the things the video has. Especially the shitty driving 😂 Some of us still like to have fun without zombie walking into a hookah bar off 20 Xanax to talk about how loud the music is

Still driving around listening to this on full blast in 2022. It's still one of the best songs ever made and it's a time machine that takes me back to the 90's when my life was a lot simpler.
I was young once, and it was when this song was first released. This song is a part of my youth and soul, and I'll never forget it. This double album will echo through time.
I was 24 26 years ago... I was in the best decade, before 9/11, at the birth of the internet craze, best alternative rock, grunge and carefree times, without Facebook, social media, crazy politics... somebody build that way back machine quick, pretty please...

I'm 43, and this came out in 1996, the year I graduated from high school. Man this takes me back to such a great time in life. Something about them riding in that car, being young and free. Just takes me there.
@Waqas Khan I wish you 2000's kids experienced it also, times would be much different these days if you guys got to grow up the way we did. Simpler times
Ok. Let's be honest for a second, the 90s were all about rap, this kinda music was in the back burner. In fact listening to alternative rock was considered not that cool. Now the 90s were still cool but there was crappy music back then too.
Remember that it's a song about being a teen and not about the 1970s. Around the time of the song release 1970s nostalgia was rising until it became fashionable (That 70s Show for instance came out a couple of years after this song debut) but the lyrics are truly an ode to naive and unceremonious adolescence and friendship. Although people in comments are talking about post-modern nostalgia of missing something you did not have lived yourself they do so because they're focusing on the video above all else. I think anyone can relate with what the lyrics are saying no matter what decade they have born. Even if you think your teenage years were boring or a total waste with no friends you can still relate with what the lyrics say about not caring. To not care used to be a privilege of kids and teenagers whilst to be adult is to take responsibility. And it is about the delights taken from this absence of responsibility he is singing about.
I also thought the same thing. We have a nostalgic day when we don't have responsibility just pure fun or even fool. This song just remind me that your past was cool and fun but this ultimate reality and responsibility now is things that push me to be a better person that means more responsibility, less drama and mindfulness.
This comment made me cry so hard, I never went to parties or had these experiences, I sat inside all my teenage years playing video games and doing other things. Glad you guys have these memories ❤
It’s so cool to think that right now while you’re listening to this someone in the other corner of the world is also listening to this and vibing with you without even knowing
My dad isn't here anymore, but he will forever be with me when I listen to the smashing pumpkins. Such a special sound that could never be recreated. I miss ya dad.
@@anneg1979 I grew up around cell phones, only I never had one until I was 14. And when I did, it was just a stick phone which I used for emergency, I never depended on electronics growing up, because society was still fairly good when I grew up, after getting older and realizing what other adults told me when I was younger, no kid will ever realize shit an adult would tell them until they become one themselves.
Many of us really didnt understand the beauty of our youth. At the time we mostly dreamed of hurrying and finally growing the heck up so we could do what we wanted. Now as adults we at times yearn for some of the days of our past. The first girl that ever showed any interest in me ( an ugly duckling i considered myself to be) when i was 14 was the sweetest nicest girl. I came from a rougher home without much love and I considered myself quite unlikeable. She proved to me....that someone could actually like me. She ended up being the first love of my life. Unfortunately she died a few years after it all at only the age of 18. Now decades later i still think of her and her sweet spirit. How she had to have been an angel to like a misfit like me. Especially at such a crucial developmental moment of my adolescents where acceptance and love is exactly what i needed. I can still so clearly hear her soft voice from our childhood. Sad but i try to look back at the memory more with gratitude today. I'm just glad that it ever even happened. Sending strength and positive vibes to everyone who read.
6 months ago today my dads Toyota Landcruiser was in a car accident and the car was totaled. It was a perfectly preserved 2002 that was flawless. It could have gone another 100-200 thousand miles. Losing a car is nothing like losing a person, but It makes me sad that it was the car I grew up in and my family loved very much. My dad has always worked a lot and most of the times I spent with him were in that car. This was one of the songs he showed me while I was a lot younger. The road trips, memories, and surfing adventures can never be the same.
I have resonated with you friend. I have experienced something similar and you made me remember that part of a long forgotten life and feel the longing of something unreachable again. Thank you. I wish you the best.

This song is one i consider perfect, from that simple but very memorable drum beat, to that beautiful nostalgic riff, down to that bass that keeps the rhythm. And of course Billy's powerful vocals and symbolic lyrics
I listened to the instrumental version of this and never noticed the keyboard at ‘and we don’t even care’. I’ve never noticed that before, but it’s so cool.
This is a song about nostalgia, and I remember laying on my friend's bed late at night (or early morning) after partying, and this song came on the radio. I remember thinking, someday this song is going to be nostalgic when I'm old, and here I am. That night we had a similar party, furniture in the pool and all. It gives me goosebumps whenever I hear it now, and I pine badly for the 90s. You kids really missed out on a great time to be free and unconcerned.
I'd be honored if some 90s fans would take a quick listen to my acoustic piano & vocal YT performances of "1979" by the SMASHING PUMPKINS ua-cam.com/video/XqvFK_v3Xfk/v-deo.html and "Name" by the GOO GOO DOLLS in tribute to 2 great standards of the era. Live acoustic with no autotune or digital editing. Peace out and stay safe in the '020s.

I still feel young listening. It takes me back. It makes me feel sound and well. Today’s music is horrible. I don’t want to sound old, but I am truly concerned for today’s youth. To think that our alternative rock bands were once edgy is an overstatement in comparison to what kids are listening to this days and what they are trying to emulate.
@@nlivlavie3108 There's a plan behind it all, and it has nothing to to with American Values nor The Constitution. But I think you know that. This is why the CCP has put so much money into Hollywood in the last couple of decades.
@@akiramenai4973 I didn’t bring politics into my comment and would rather not be associated to a political comment or referred to as if you know me or assume to know my position. The constitution does have something to do with it because it defends their right to make statements that the majority may find offensive. American values have not always been great in practice, simply in theory. The 60s-80s were very much against the status quo and misguiding in ways that likely led to bad decision with long term outcomes deviated from other potentials. I’m not indifferent to the CCP, but I didn’t include global affairs into a simple comment. And I don’t know you for you to assume to know me. I also don’t think everything is a conspiracy theory. I think it’s more likely attributed to poor systems of education domestically than foreign meddling if I had to begin to speculate variables.
@@nlivlavie3108 If you don't like people being so personal, why do you use three full names when you could just use a nickname? That's pretty weird. The strangest thing is that you make comments at all. People are going to talk to you if you do. Individuals plot subterfuge every day. Sometimes they do so in pairs or small groups. It's pretty outlandish to think that governments would not also conspire. Conspiracy is not a bad word, or psychological condition. It's a fact of human nature.

This song is too much man. Too much nostalgia. Too much sadness and happiness all in one. Makes you wonder what the hell this life is really about and why we are even here. But also makes you get the feeling there is a reason we are here and it’ll all make sense when we die. I’m not even depressed. I love life. But apart of me can’t wait to die to see the truth. Weird. Life is weird.
I found the reason. To get in a right relationship with Jesus and be saved from death by Faith alone in Christ, no works or good deeds are good enough. Check out some Living Waters university clips for more on that and Hope you find the truth.. dont wait till you die to find out.
We have an opposite opinion here, in Russia. 90s was the worst time for us, that was a decade of homicide, drugs and misery. Bless god it's all gone past.
@@gachimuchenik7784 That’s a really cool perspective to hear. Everywhere I go everyone says that the 90s were a golden age which I guess they were in America, but not where you are from.
I was born in the 80's. The internet was deff a thing in the 90's... Especially the late 90's. AOL chat was the SHIT in 1998 lol. Really miss those times in my childhood. The 90's really was a lot better. Anything before 911. After 911 the country really changed. Everyone got angry and bitter and security was increased everywhere and then we also got these SJWs everywhere and stuff. 90's kids unite.
Heartfelt and beautiful song. I cannot help but feel nostalgic while listening to those incredibly poetic lyrics and watching the rebelliousness of those teenagers in the video. True or not, what a time to be alive!
Every one. Just today turned 37. I'm still an overages 12 southern boy when this song plays. All other lessons after fall into perspective in the context of these so-much-more-than-nostalgic riffs. Raise a glass to the golden age of alt rock.
I was 16 when this came out. It’s literally the soundtrack of my entire high school life. Barely knew what the Internet was, no cell phones, no social media. Just the radio, MTV and MuchMusic. If I had known those would be the best of times I would have made sure to soak it all in and truly enjoy it.
Yesss what a good old day.. Mayebe iam only 9 or 10 years old but band like this fill my days, maybe drugs were very rampant at that time, but it seems I'd rather die in those days, than live in this nft shit era lol

I'm 67. Was raising two little kids when it came out, but since having two little kids and my husband around was such a great time in my life, this song is one of many that bring back so many good memories for me, too. Now my kids are adults, and my husband is gone, but hearing songs like this one reminds that I was blessed with a very good life.
I never was a fan of this band, but as I listened to this song just now, I was overwhelmed with emotions and brought back to my teenage years when this song was everywhere. All the memories, rushing back in, both bitter and sweet. Oh how time really flies. Where did my youth go?
Same here never a big fan the same with REM but i.livr them now I think growing up in the era a lot of bands were making well wrote guitar music after the ekectro pop heavy drivel from the 80s and all the good indie and rock music in the 90s some good stuff got lost a little in-between it all. This song and video is a banger though

Great comment pal always said the same myself you would listen to a song and it brings you back to that very time the girl or boy you were with but yeah music is a time machine 👌
The song and video hits way different when you're actually born in 1979. Everything in this video is what I was experiencing when this album came out. Never forget the first time I was in a car, free of adults, and with other kids my age. Our spirits couldn't be broken, our days could not be ruined. A time of wonder, a time of awkwardness, a time of discovery was upon me and I couldn't inhale it fast enough. What a rush it was to be a young adult discovering the world. Fast forward nearly 30 years and I'm watching my kids do the same thing. Sometimes I lay in bed wishing I had a time machine. Thankfully videos like this and my kids allow me to close my eyes and remember it as it was, where it belongs...inside me forever.
well said Michael, I do not think Kida today have any idea how free we were growing up, good and bad then they are. No cell phones, you had to get a new girl's number you met at the mall on a piece of paper. No directions on a phone when you were driving, shows that you missed if you were not sitting at the tv when they came on. Eating home cooked meals, going out was for when ya had a birthday. Drinking Kool aid or tang, soft drinks, yeah right.. Riding bikes till the street lights came on. playing Nintendo for the first time, going to an Arcade and the dollar movies. Seeing Mike Tyson become the youngest Heavyweight champ of the world!@ The first days of MTV.. i am older now but i would not trade those days for any today..80's and 90's music was the best..

I may very well be the oldest one to post here. I love this song. I was 21 in 1979, and already been in service, but this song makes think about my teen years in the early seventies. Great song.
I hear you, I was 21 in 1979 as well and just joined the army. I feel the same way about it and the video reminds me of stuff that me and my friends did. The party, and pool hopping and cruising. Good times. 😉
I was 20 years old in 1979, I heard this song when I turned 40 (midlife crisis) and thought about 1979 and how simple it was. Now at 60 I listen to it and only feel FREE from the struggles of my past. Great song in the never ending circle. 1995-1999 had some of the best music, much better than the 60s.
Elder Mountain much better than the 60s? Well I’m only 16 but from what I’ve heard from the 60s I love most of it, many good songs came from that time period in my opinion.
It's good to know that in 30 years or so, I'll be getting over the crushing despair felt by a sense of lost childhood whenever my sense of nostalgy is stimulated.
My song, my generation. I was 15 years old in 1979. I was born in 1964 and I'm now 55. This song and the video is like a time capsule of my teenage years.....
@@odros , 40 years has passed.... the teenage girl is now a mother of 2, grandmother of 5, a manager in a hospital, who is getting old and feeling her age.... I miss being young, pretty and full of youth and energy. I have many regrets, but in end I turned out just fine. I remember 3 channel TV's with round glass screens and no remotes, vinyl records, and black desktop rotary phones. We got information from encyclopedias and our local library. Now we have the internet! It tells you everything! I can communicate with people all over the world effortlessly. I can video chat with my grandson. Amazing! But I still feel nostalgic about the past. I miss the simplicity. Thanks for asking :)
I grew up with The Smashing Pumpkins, like many of us. I memorized all lyrics of Mellon Collie and The Infinite Sadness. I remember singing their songs out loud, feeling the music, and being alive. This song is a true masterpiece and it gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it, still, in 2023.
I'm from Poland from the continent of Europe this song is something special when I listen to it I feel the power flowing from it and the filling of nostalgia
As I turn 38 tomorrow, I still remember riding my bike to the record store (rip 1988-2019😢) and buying Siamese Dream.... still remember seeing it on MTV....and yea it’s aging nicely....rock on
This is probably one of my favorite songs by them. Due to the fact that this song feels like a memory to me. A memory of a time before the leap to smart phones and other social technology. When life's experiences felt more genuine, relationships had more depth and meaning , and some things that should still be valued have either become less important or became something else entirely. It hurts to see it happen and know you can't stop it. At the same time, I do understood things do change. Some good, some bad, but some of it ,fortunately, still is the same.
I've had this song in my head lately, it reminds me of my mom. I remember sitting in the car in high school with her driving me wherever and smashing pumpkins would come on the radio and she'd tell me about the music videos she watched growing up. She was born in 1979, and she passed away November of 2020. It's crazy the things that can bring back memories so vividly and makes me realize just how much I miss her. What I would do to go back and go driving with her, even just for the length of one song, just to spend the time with her one more time (edit) tomorrow is the 6th of November, marking a year since she passed away, I am 20 and my sister is a couple months away from 18, I wish I could change things because this hurts so much sometimes.. I'm grateful for all the kind words, I never expected to get so many responses, and it's helped me feel a little less alone
Your Testimony is beautiful, my feelings for your mother, so young to happen. I'm 51 y o and ir seems like yesterday listening tod this sound. Hugs, here talking from Brazil.
In my teens I didn't understand the lyrics, just felt the profundity of the song. Nowadays, I 'understand' this masterpiece - even most lyrics - with a sense of awe and appreciation, as well as mature introspection. A precious gift for a lifetime.
@Hunter Vonnegut You missed the point man. Nothing can replace the smashing pumpkins... It's embedded in memories and heart. You can't replace that everything is just a knock off
Just listened to this song as a grown man…. My brother used to always play this when I was growing up. (He graduated in 2000) so this was the soundtrack to his high school self. & it’s crazy because I haven’t heard this song in a decade Atleast. Listening to it at work during an overnight shift I had a rush of emotions because listening to this song when you’ve been through certain stages of life it just hits different. I’ve had this song on repeat all week.
I hear you man. Believe me, music reaches down into the very foundation of our soul and makes us feel like nothing else can. For me "America" "A horse with no name" reminds me of the old days of playing GTA San Andreas on my original Xbox. All the 80s music in GTA Vice City makes me feel similiar. Warm and without a care in the world like what Billy Corgan mean't in this song. A teenager or child who just wants to be free 😊 without any worries or cares in the world.
It hits subconsciously. There is a sample on repeat on each verse prior to the lyrics. Probably some obscure song from the 80's. Even the chord progression itself sounds like 80s pop stock. (Mike Parsons Project comes to mind). I never found out what it was. Sounds like someone's saying "trembling" through a Leslie or vibrato effect on low recording volume. A fluttery filter sound effect of sorts. Always was vaguely familiar, almost on the tip of my tongue, but I could never place it. Maybe that's part of the allure, knowing but on a subconscious level.
I feel the same the past two weeks I’ve been listening to the words and really paying attention and I feel so connected than I ever have even tho I’ve always listened to this song throughout my life.
@@derekderek2570 right, it's equivalent to someone writing a song about 2005 today which i feel like ive been starting to see a lot of lately but it just isnt the sameeee :( even tho i was 6 in 1996 lol! still miss it

This song encapsulates the 90s like no other. There is something about this video and song which is so nostalgic. I am 40 now and you see life passing you by, and you wonder where did the time go? I so miss this era, and the sad thing is we can never go back.
Even though I was 10 in 1979…This song makes me nostalgic for the fun times I spent with my friends in high school in the 80’s…and the song came out in the 90’s. That’s the magic of music. It just makes you feel, plain and simple.
@Hunter Vonnegut Ok dude can you stop saying stuff like "Miss [Insert Random Band Here]?.... Check out SOLAR KAMA SUTRA - the best underground band on Earth!" in a comment talking about how great this song or how great this band is? Like bro it's so annoying, just stop.
This song brings back such beautiful memories to me. Memories of feeling free as teenagers. Just doing silly things. Till this day when I still get that same feeling.
Billy Corgan and I were both 12 in 1979, so I totally get what he was trying to say with this song. We were 70s kids, and 1979 not only marked the end of an incredible decade, but being 12 for us it was the end of our youth. The 80s and our teens were just around the corner, and nothing would ever be the same again. And yes, while that moment of being on the precipice of puberty and a new decade has happened to everyone all over the world, for us it was different because we were living in a decade of profound societal change. If you were there, you knew it, because you could feel it in the air. Historians have said that the 3 most important decades of the 20th Century were: 1920s Paris, 1930s Berlin, and 1970s NYC. Having grown up on the east coast of the US, I can confirm that excitement wasn't just contained to NYC during that time. Billy captured the spirit of that time with this song. Thanks Billy, for making me remember with absolute clarity that unique period in time for all of us 70s kids in America.
One of the greatest songs I’ve ever heard. Such nostalgia in it. Makes me think of my friends from high school who showed me this song who I no longer am close with. Will ALWAYS listen to this masterpiece

Mid-90s haze of memories, unbelievable how much nostalgia this evokes. Even though we were aimless and getting into needless trouble, we were at least able to feel and connect with each other, no electronic devices needed.
💯 . When social media was AIM/AOL lol and no dating sites.. people hung out in person and If it was awkward we dealt with it and got over it and made friends and did things without constantly playing these comparison games to who has the more perfect life.

Lol you act like growing up in the 2000s was way different? iPhones weren’t a thing until early 2010s practically speaking, stop acting like every generation after you grew up in a way less superior than yours.
This song is so special. Back when my aunt was in high school in the mid-late 90’s, she’d babysit me after school until my mom and grandparents got off work. She’s always been a huge Pumpkins fan, and we’d listen to this a lot in the car. She’d always let me pick the music we’d listen to and I picked this a lot, even as a really young kid. So every time I hear it, it’s the late 90’s again and I’m 4 years old riding around in my aunt’s shitty old sedan with our dog. Even today, I’m now 28 and she’s 43, and I still send this song to her every now and again.
Marco T I'm 16, born in 2000 and I get 90s nostalgia listening to this song. I feel like I missed out on something iconic and I wish I could have been a part of it.

Lyrics : Shakedown 1979
Cool kids never have the time
On a live wire right up off the street
You and I should meet
Junebug skipping like a stone
With the headlights pointed at the dawn
We were sure we'd never see an end to it all
And I don't even care to shake these zipper blues
And we don't know just where our bones will rest
To dust I guess
Forgotten and absorbed into the earth below
Double-cross the vacant and the bored
They're not sure just what we have in store
Morphine city slipping dues down to see
That we don't even care as restless as we are
We feel the pull in the land of a thousand guilts
And poured cement, lamented and assured
To the lights and towns below
Faster than the speed of sound
Faster than we thought we'd go
Beneath the sound of hope
Justine never knew the rules,
Hung down with the freaks and ghouls
No apologies ever need be made
I know you better than you fake it to see
That we don't even care to shake these zipper blues
And we don't know just where our bones will rest
To dust I guess
Forgotten and absorbed into the earth below
The street heats the urgency of now
As you see there's no one around

I was born in 99.
We found the life of the party ^
I also thought the same thing. We have a nostalgic day when we don't have responsibility just pure fun or even fool. This song just remind me that your past was cool and fun but this ultimate reality and responsibility now is things that push me to be a better person that means more responsibility, less drama and mindfulness.
This comment made me cry so hard, I never went to parties or had these experiences, I sat inside all my teenage years playing video games and doing other things. Glad you guys have these memories ❤

Memorys is what they are now but that's what we make on a daily basis ....sad but true .... imagine being someone with no memorys
Thank you. Sending positive vibes back from Buenos Aires, Argentina!!

This whole album was a pure masterpiece, it sums up all of my youth, the angst, the horniness, the sadness and the good times!!
Hi I recommend an Indie Song called 'Looking Into The Mirror' By Robert Nix
‘The Horniness’ is why you were arrested for sexual assault four times. You were a real piece of shit.
This song manages to be relentlessly bleak and relentlessly comforting at the same time.
Got damn
I heard Billy Corgan on Stern saying that's what he was going for on "Tonight, Tonight". This song immediately popped in my head when he said that.
That’s called nostalgia. Simultaneously the best and worst feeling.
Yes
Musicians that can do that are true artists. In my opinion they are rare today.

"1979"
Shakedown 1979, cool kids never have the time
On a live wire right up off the street
You and I should meet
Junebug skipping like a stone
With the headlights pointed at the dawn
We were sure we'd never see an end to it all
And I don't even care to shake these zipper blues
And we don't know
Just where our bones will rest
To dust I guess
Forgotten and absorbed into the earth below
Double cross the vacant and the bored
They're not sure just what we have in store
Morphine city slipping dues down to see
That we don't even care as restless as we are
We feel the pull in the land of a thousand guilts
And poured cement, lamented and assured
To the lights and towns below
Faster than the speed of sound
Faster than we thought we'd go, beneath the sound of hope
Justine never knew the rules,
Hung down with the freaks and the ghouls
No apologies ever need be made, I know you better than you fake it
To see that we don't even care to shake these zipper blues
And we don't know just where our bones will rest
To dust I guess
Forgotten and absorbed into the earth below

What a beautiful reflection. Well said...
If you are actually born in 1979 you are too young to remember the 70's and what's in this video. It's a video about being a teen in those years...
@@Yu5aku yep, agreed. This song is named for the year when Billy Corgan was 12 years old.
well said Michael,
I do not think Kida today have any idea how free we were growing up, good and bad then they are.

Damn.

I'm on the same boat
Couldn't have said it better myself.
Damn. This song is so different than anything I've heard. It's making me feel nostalgic for things that haven't happened yet, WHAT.

I do love this song. It's an homage to the era when I was staring to grow up -- 1979. I was 15. Kudos to a younger band capturing the feeling.
I totally understand, I was six years old in 1979
Billy Corgan and I were both 12 in 1979, so I totally get what he was trying to say with this song.
Gentilly girl.. I know. 79 was such a iconic year time day second.... They world was changing faster than we could hold on
