This song is the definition of nostalgia. I miss when I was younger, and I wish I could’ve cherished the time I had before I lost my chance. I’m pretty sure this is something we all deal with. As kids we wish we were older to be able to do what we want, but never realize that all we want is already there.

yeah honestly, I mean Im only 12 but I´m scared of growing up because I don´t wanna grow older and since I had a lot of trauma and I am mentally and physically older than most kids my age its hard to stay a kid and have fun. So now that I just realized this a few days ago I´ve been trying to cherish my childhood. But eventually I´ll have to. oh well. I just wanna have fun and not want the rest of my childhood to be a nightmare like some of it was.

I'm 42 years old, married, a beautiful wife who I will love till my last breath, 3 amazing children, a good career and relatively good health. Yet this song makes me want to go back and do it all over again, find my teenage self and let me know that all the pain you've experienced and still will in your 20's will be worth it in the end, that you'll be okay, you will.

    Lyrics : Shakedown 1979
Cool kids never have the time
On a live wire right up off the street
    You and I should meet
    Junebug skipping like a stone
With the headlights pointed at the dawn
We were sure we'd never see an end to it all
And I don't even care to shake these zipper blues
And we don't know just where our bones will rest
    To dust I guess
Forgotten and absorbed into the earth below
Double-cross the vacant and the bored
They're not sure just what we have in store
Morphine city slipping dues down to see
That we don't even care as restless as we are
We feel the pull in the land of a thousand guilts
And poured cement, lamented and assured
To the lights and towns below
Faster than the speed of sound
Faster than we thought we'd go
    Beneath the sound of hope
    Justine never knew the rules,
Hung down with the freaks and ghouls
No apologies ever need be made
I know you better than you fake it to see
That we don't even care to shake these zipper blues
And we don't know just where our bones will rest
    To dust I guess
Forgotten and absorbed into the earth below
The street heats the urgency of now
As you see there's no one around

Remember that it's a song about being a teen and not about the 1970s. Around the time of the song release 1970s nostalgia was rising until it became fashionable (That 70s Show for instance came out a couple of years after this song debut) but the lyrics are truly an ode to naive and unceremonious adolescence and friendship. Although people in comments are talking about post-modern nostalgia of missing something you did not have lived yourself they do so because they're focusing on the video above all else. I think anyone can relate with what the lyrics are saying no matter what decade they have born. Even if you think your teenage years were boring or a total waste with no friends you can still relate with what the lyrics say about not caring. To not care used to be a privilege of kids and teenagers whilst to be adult is to take responsibility. And it is about the delights taken from this absence of responsibility he is singing about.

Many of us really didnt understand the beauty of our youth. At the time we mostly dreamed of hurrying and finally growing the heck up so we could do what we wanted. Now as adults we at times yearn for some of the days of our past. The first girl that ever showed any interest in me ( an ugly duckling i considered myself to be) when i was 14 was the sweetest nicest girl. I came from a rougher home without much love and I considered myself quite unlikeable. She proved to me....that someone could actually like me. She ended up being the first love of my life. Unfortunately she died a few years after it all at only the age of 18. Now decades later i still think of her and her sweet spirit. How she had to have been an angel to like a misfit like me. Especially at such a crucial developmental moment of my adolescents where acceptance and love is exactly what i needed. I can still so clearly hear her soft voice from our childhood. 6 months ago today my dads Toyota Landcruiser was in a car accident and the car was totaled. It was a perfectly preserved 2002 that was flawless. It could have gone another 100-200 thousand miles. Losing a car is nothing like losing a person, but It makes me sad that it was the car I grew up in and my family loved very much. My dad has always worked a lot and most of the times I spent with him were in that car. This was one of the songs he showed me while I was a lot younger. The road trips, memories, and surfing adventures can never be the same.

    Shakedown 1979
Cool kids never have the time
On a live wire right up off the street
    You and I should meet
    Junebug skippin' like a stone
With the headlights pointed at the dawn
We were sure we'd never see an end
    To it all
    [Chorus]
    And I don't even care
    To shake these zipper blues
    And we don't know
Just where our bones will rest
    To dust I guess
    Forgotten and absorbed
    Into the earth below
    [Verse 2]
Double-cross the vacant and the bored
They're not sure just what we have in store
    Morphine city slippin' dues
    Down to see
    [Chorus 2]
    That we don't even care
    As restless as we are
    We feel the pull
In the land of a thousand guilts
    And poured cement
    [Bridge]
    Lamented and assured
To the lights and towns below
Faster than the speed of sound
Faster than we thought we'd go
    Beneath the sound of hope
    [Verse 3]
    Justine never knew the rules
Hung down with the freaks and ghouls
No apologies ever need be made
I know you better than you fake it
    To see
    [Chorus 1]
    That we don't even care
    To shake these zipper blues
    And we don't know
Just where our bones will rest
    To dust I guess
    Forgotten and absorbed
    Into the earth below
    [Outro]
The street heats the urgency of now
As you see there's no one around...

I remember thinking, someday this song is going to be nostalgic when I'm old, and here I am. That night we had a similar party, furniture in the pool and all. It gives me goosebumps whenever I hear it now, and I pine badly for the 90s. You kids really missed out on a great time to be free and unconcerned.

    "1979"
Shakedown 1979, cool kids never have the time
On a live wire right up off the street
    You and I should meet
    Junebug skipping like a stone
With the headlights pointed at the dawn
We were sure we'd never see an end to it all
And I don't even care to shake these zipper blues
    And we don't know
Just where our bones will rest
    To dust I guess
Forgotten and absorbed into the earth below
Double cross the vacant and the bored
They're not sure just what we have in store
Morphine city slipping dues down to see
That we don't even care as restless as we are
We feel the pull in the land of a thousand guilts
And poured cement, lamented and assured
To the lights and towns below
Faster than the speed of sound
Faster than we thought we'd go, beneath the sound of hope
    Justine never knew the rules,
Hung down with the freaks and the ghouls
No apologies ever need be made, I know you better than you fake it
To see that we don't even care to shake these zipper blues
And we don't know just where our bones will rest
    To dust I guess
Forgotten and absorbed into the earth below
The street heats the urgency of now

The song and video hits way different when you're actually born in 1979. Everything in this video is what I was experiencing when this album came out. Never forget the first time I was in a car, free of adults, and with other kids my age. Our spirits couldn't be broken, our days could not be ruined. A time of wonder, a time of awkwardness, a time of discovery was upon me and I couldn't inhale it fast enough. What a rush it was to be a young adult discovering the world. Fast forward nearly 30 years and I'm watching my kids do the same thing. Sometimes I lay in bed wishing I had a time machine. Thankfully videos like this and my kids allow me to close my eyes and remember it as it was, where it belongs...inside me forever.

I do not think Kida today have any idea how free we were growing up, good and bad then they are. No cell phones, you had to get a new girl's number you met at the mall on a piece of paper. No directions on a phone when you were driving, shows that you missed if you were not sitting at the tv when they came on. Eating home cooked meals, going out was for when ya had a birthday. Drinking Kool aid or tang, soft drinks, yeah right.. Riding bikes till the street lights came on. playing Nintendo for the first time, going to an Arcade and the dollar movies. Seeing Mike Tyson become the youngest Heavyweight champ of the world!@ The first days of MTV.. i am older now but i would not trade those days for any today..80's and 90's music was the best..

When life's experiences felt more genuine, relationships had more depth and meaning , and some things that should still be valued have either become less important or became something else entirely. It hurts to see it happen and know you can't stop it. At the same time, I do understood things do change. Some good, some bad, but some of it ,fortunately, still is the same.

I remember sitting in the car in high school with her driving me wherever and smashing pumpkins would come on the radio and she'd tell me about the music videos she watched growing up. She was born in 1979, and she passed away November of 2020. It's crazy the things that can bring back memories so vividly and makes me realize just how much I miss her. What I would do to go back and go driving with her, even just for the length of one song, just to spend the time with her one more time (edit) tomorrow is the 6th of November, marking a year since she passed away, I am 20 and my sister is a couple months away from 18, I wish I could change things because this hurts so much sometimes.. Just listened to this song as a grown man…. My brother used to always play this when I was growing up. (He graduated in 2000) so this was the soundtrack to his high school self. & it’s crazy because I haven’t heard this song in a decade Atleast. Listening to it at work during an overnight shift I had a rush of emotions because listening to this song when you’ve been through certain stages of life it just hits different. I’ve had this song on repeat all week.

I hear you man. Believe me, music reaches down into the very foundation of our soul and makes us feel like nothing else can. For me "America" "A horse with no name" reminds me of the old days of playing GTA San Andreas on my original Xbox. All the 80s music in GTA Vice City makes me feel similiar. Warm and without a care in the world like what Billy Corgan mean't in this song. A teenager or child who just wants to be free 😊 without any worries or cares in the world.

It hits subconsciously. There is a sample on repeat on each verse prior to the lyrics. Probably some obscure song from the 80's. Even the chord progression itself sounds like 80s pop stock. (Mike Parsons Project comes to mind). I never found out what it was. Sounds like someone's saying "trembling" through a Leslie or vibrato effect on low recording volume. A fluttery filter sound effect of sorts. Always was vaguely familiar, almost on the tip of my tongue, but I could never place it. Maybe that's part of the allure, knowing but on a subconscious level.

    [Verse 1]
    Shakedown 1979
Cool kids never have the time
On a live wire right up off the street
    You and I should meet
    Junebug skippin' like a stone
With the headlights pointed at the dawn
We were sure we'd never see an end
    To it all
    [Chorus]
    And I don't even care
    To shake these zipper blues
    And we don't know
Just where our bones will rest
    To dust I guess
    Forgotten and absorbed
    Into the earth below
    [Verse 2]
Double-cross the vacant and the bored
They're not sure just what we have in store
    Morphine city slippin' dues
    Down to see
    [Chorus 2]
    That we don't even care
    As restless as we are
    We feel the pull
In the land of a thousand guilts
    And poured cement
    [Bridge]
    Lamented and assured
To the lights and towns below
Faster than the speed of sound
Faster than we thought we'd go
    Beneath the sound of hope
    [Verse 3]
    Justine never knew the rules
Hung down with the freaks and ghouls
No apologies ever need be made
I know you better than you fake it
    To see
    [Chorus 1]
    That we don't even care
    To shake these zipper blues
    And we don't know
Just where our bones will rest
    To dust I guess
    Forgotten and absorbed
    Into the earth below
    [Outro]
The street heats the urgency of now
As you see there's no one around

Billy Corgan and I were both 12 in 1979, so I totally get what he was trying to say with this song. We were 70s kids, and 1979 not only marked the end of an incredible decade, but being 12 for us it was the end of our youth. The 80s and our teens were just around the corner, and nothing would ever be the same again. And yes, while that moment of being on the precipice of puberty and a new decade has happened to everyone all over the world, for us it was different because we were living in a decade of profound societal change. If you were there, you knew it, because you could feel it in the air. Historians have said that the 3 most important decades of the 20th Century were: 1920s Paris, 1930s Berlin, and 1970s NYC. Having grown up on the east coast of the US, I can confirm that excitement wasn't just contained to NYC during that time. Billy captured the spirit of that time with this song. Thanks Billy, for making me remember with absolute clarity that unique period in time for all of us 70s kids in America.

This song is so special. Back when my aunt was in high school in the mid-late 90’s, she’d babysit me after school until my mom and grandparents got off work. She’s always been a huge Pumpkins fan, and we’d listen to this a lot in the car. She’d always let me pick the music we’d listen to and I picked this a lot, even as a really young kid.
So every time I hear it, it’s the late 90’s again and I’m 4 years old riding around in my aunt’s shitty old sedan with our dog. Even today, I’m now 28 and she’s 43, and I still send this song to her every now and again.
