I think Gimli was a "double whammy" he fell in love at first sight of Galadriel (High Elf Queen) and became a trusted friend / battle brother to Legolas ( Prince of The Wood Elves) even though he hails from Erebor. The Valar probably called bs and wanted to seem him up close.
I don't know why, but I found the "ending" of the Fellowship beautiful, but also quite sad. It's just interesting to see, that many non-elven character travelled to Valinor, just to be reunited with some friends from the Fellowship. But still, not all of them ... But hey, there is still supposed to be Dagor Dagorath, so I guess, they will reunite, all of them, eventually .. even if it is again in time of war (battle).
The Lord of the Rings is the final chapter in the entire history of Arda. The elves are at their end and even Círdan will have to leave. All that has happened has led up to this. Earendil's line ends. Galadriel, the last of the Noldor that crossed the Hellcaraxë with Fingolfin leaves, leaving her husband of thousands of years, Celeborn to close the door on Lorien. The last of Elrond people, the brother of Elros and Uncle (of sorts) of Aragorn leaves as the last of the heirs to the throne of the Noldor elves..........its the end of a GIGANTIC tale that began before time. Manwe and Varda will welcome back their families and sit woth them in the undying lands. Feanor and his sons are still never going to leave Mandos......its a beautiful end.
I have this beautiful image in my head of an elderly Gimli being guided by Legolas in Aman and just as the dawn rises he sees Galadriel, as golden and fair as when last he looked upon her.

Denethor actually does release Pippin from his service before he commits suicide. But when Aragorn becomes King, he tells Pippin he is still a Knight of Gondor, so even though he's currently "on leave", he may be recalled to service at any time.

So what exactly is the undying land? Is it just a name for Elves seeing as how they can live forever until they are killed? Or anyone who goes there can't die? Like will Frodo and Sam as well as Gandalf and Gimli never die? If someone who actually knows can you reply to this please.
The land itself is just a normal continent. But because the Valar and Maiar, 2 immortal and powerful races, chose to make it their home, the land now flows with powerful magic that makes it a paradise for all who live there. But because the magic is so powerful, only immortal being like Elves can live there, if a mortal like a human went their life force would drain quickly and they would die. However some few exceptions were made. Those who held the one ring of power, like Frodo, Bilbo and Sam were allowed to go, presumably because their status as ringbearers would protect them against the magic of that land, or else the Valar would grant them special powers to survive. Gimli should not have been allowed to go, but both Legolas and Galadriel spoke on his behalf, so it's possible they allowed him in too, but we don't know for sure.

It's funny you should ask that right now, as I am in the middle of working on two Star Wars projects that heavily involve SWTOR, and I am currently replaying the game as well as KOTOR I/II for research. These projects are still several weeks away, but one of them is an update to a series I made years ago covering the history of Darth Revan. That vid is like 40 mins long and covers some of SWTOR. So you can go check out that Darth Revan vid, and I also have one about Darth Nihilus that covers some of that period. But I will also be coming out with news vids in about it in about 1-2 months. :)
