In1998, I had put a deposit down on a Corvette, when I saw a 1990 NSX drive through a nearby neighborhood. I went to the owner's home and told him about how I loved his car. He took me for a drive down a twisty country road. After that, I cancelled the Corvette and bought an NSX. Still have and love that car!
I bought a new NSX Type-S in lime green metallic in 1999. I still have it to this day and take it to the nearby track (Sugo) whenever possible. Though I am not a pro driver, it feels like it when I am driving it around track no matter what the times are. Truly an amazing car.
Wow that's awesome. They only made 248 of the Type S, super rare. Out of curiosity I was trying to find one for sale online a while ago but then found out how many they made, makes sense why you never see one for sale. That makes them more rare than the Type R actually. Enjoy it!
@@Whatsth3ruckus Thanks! I actually didn't know that they're so rare, but I have to say I never see them around. There are a good number of base grade and Type T around the area (Sendai) and one Type R that I know of. None are green, though. I've had a few sincere offers to buy it from me and even though it's racked up 84,000km it looks new and is all stock. I've an emotional attachment to it at this point but it's nice to know that I can get what I paid for it if I ever decide to sell it.
I remember sitting in an original NSX in the showroom at the age of 10 years old, the salesmen were understandably excited about it. I'm 40 now and still can't afford one, but listening to Harry's account of it is the next best thing!
Had the chance to meet Harry @goodwood Festival of Speed and that just confirmed my "youtube impression": What a nice guy and total car enthusiast! Using a Zonda wing as support for signing my little poster - Thanks again :)

Guy was kinda stranded in the desert and had a slashed tire but no spare so I lent him one of my wheels out of respect. he loved the look of it and bought the set from me the next day and he also invited me and some pals lunch.
I don't care if it's lacking in torque/power compared to modern standards, lightweight, that noise and a manual gearbox is what matters. Sounds fantastic, you really captured that induction noise well!
I have a '92. It's an amazing car. It just makes you want to drive harder and harder, and it loves every bit of it. I have driven a lot of different cars over the years as a track nut and instructor, and this one is my favorite.

S2000 was a great little car. Fantastic engine and like all Honda of the period, as reliable as granite. An Integra Type R(DC2) another one. Mine makes me look like a _way_ better driver than I am, which is some feat. :D
Had my 3.2 pop up headlight model from 2008 - 2016 and this review just brought back all the memories of that glorious V6 soundtrack as the vtec kicks in. The electric aerial and cassette player gave it's age away but it was and still is a great drivers car.

What a Great video. Classic Harry's Garage. What a fantastic enthusiast. Many many thanks Harry. Nice engine noise too!All Harry's videos are special. This is special! We're very lucky - many thanks Harry.
As an owner of 99 NSX for 20 yrs the car requires nothing but basic service and one timing belt change can't say that about Gallardo. Both great cars regardless.
@@apt62 Hello, I am writing this in hopes of hearing from you. I am budgeting for an NSX to buy in cash roughly in about 10 years. Would you recommend the 5 speed or the 6 speed? I want to keep the pop up headlights. I suppose the dream would be for a 2005 with pop up headlight conversion but never seen that anywhere. Recommendations on the transmission?
I have a ‘91 NSX. Did not know that it had a aluminum jack. Here in the US when the targa top was added Honda (Acura here) added around 160# to keep body stiffness. The weight was never trimmed off even when the fixed roof was reintroduced. If my memory serves me the owner’s manual says “to keep from over reving the engine do not exceed 112 mph in 3rd gear “
The original NSX was the brainchild of the company founder Soichiro Honda. Corporate Honda has spent the last 15 years erasing Soichiro's spirit out of everything Honda makes, prelude gone, s2000 gone, integra gone, original nsx lost. Now we have a heavy hybrid generically styled and foolishly overpriced "nsx" made in Ohio. Do they even know who the company was named after there at HONDA headquarters. Oh and don't even bother comparing the new Civic type R to the originals.
In an odd sort of way, the first gen NSX can still be had new. It's called the Lotus Evora -- mid-engine, Toyota V6, manual transmission. It's technically the same formula. I always saw the Evora as the 1st gen NSX's spiritual successor.
I owned a 2010 Evora for three years. I wish I could try the NSX to compare. The Evora is so good steering- and handling-wise that itt’s probably better than a modern NSX. It’s quite simple and the driving experience is very pure, but it has the comfort and luxury of a more upmarket car. I can’t think of a better car to own, in fact, for any money.
They did do a comparison in Evo mag. 2009 Evora vs original 3.0 NSX. Did a laptime and everything. The NSX was only 1 sec behind. Not bad for a 20 year difference.
The Honda NSX:s are quite rare in my country (like super rare probably like only 5 of them in here if not less) but I have seen one twice now in my hometown. Both times I was walking at night due to insomnia .. but seeing that car just do a fly by next to me always managed to make me so happy :D. Seeing that car just pull up on a dark misty backroad and go past me super fast is just something else. It's like seeing a fighter jet on a road... So amazing.
Love it! Agree, you can't hear a lot of his comments during the drive, but so enjoyed the sound = the NA1 and NA2 sound the same to me, even though the engine displacement grew. I owned a '91, and it sounded just like the NA2 in this video. My only gripe with the car beyond needing Popeye forearms to steer it at low speeds, was that the exhaust note was too docile at idle and low speed. Once you get into the throttle, you enjoy the beautiful symphony found on this video. I ultimately changed the exhaust so I could enjoy the sound even more.
The NSX had the same effect on me that when I saw my first 240z. Wow! That car is truly amazing. I wish I could afford one! I was completely blown away by both of them, being born into an area where you never saw anything like them. Now days it’s completely different. There are supercars of every description here now. They’re not common as SUV’s but they are around. Plus, there is an internet now. The world is a much smaller place.
Great vid Harry, always had love for the original NSX. It's always been a very handsome car with delicate styling. You're right about the interior it is very reminiscent of the 328, i also think there's some 928 in that dash too, i think the Ferrari, Porsche & Honda all share a certain dashboard logic. Honda don't make cars with simple informative dials these days, back then i really think they were up there with the likes of BMW when it came to clean, clear instrumentation, it's something i wish Honda would consider going back too, amongst a few other things. Looking forward to the next video.
@ Harry, thank you for giving me some idea of how entertaining the NSX is. I can remember the original being launched, and there was a lot of commentary from car mag reviewers at the time to the effect that the NSX was "efficient and fast, but bland and uninvolving", and that as a rival to the 348 the NSX "lacked soul" (or some such bollocks). You've given mere plebs like me a taster of what the NSX was actually like, and how wide of the mark those reviewers were. Cheers!
In the original NSX, manuals did not have power steering and there was no option for it. Automatics came with power steering. When the NSX got the 3.2L 6-speed upgrade, it also got power steering. All NSXs have 4-channel ABS, I believe it was the first car with that (or at least in the USA).
Another great video, almost as good as the one where Senna drives this car on the limit in his Italian shoes & white socks - well worth a watch! BTW my 03 Boxster S has an aluminium scissor jack - you must've seen them on Porsches Harry?!
Just for Harry's edification - at 5:40 'the only car I know with an aluminium jack'. Late 944 Turbos have an aluminium jack too. An even nicer touch - it's not stowed in a foam caddy, it's got brackets that you slide it into. To secure you open it slightly.
Harry we're close in age and that's why I like your channel, in addition to the fact that you believe in driving your cars instead of keeping them packed away. But anyway, the NSX is built about an hour away from me, here in Ohio and the new one is a NEVER BUY, while the original is a MUST BUY. The new ones are NOT selling here in the USA. Like I always say, why buy a NSX when for the same money, you could get a Ferrari 458 ??? Thumbs up from Ohio !!!!
I am currently 1 minute 13 seconds into this video, its paused. I am scared. frightened of what Harry may say. I love the NSX. It was my poster car. Everyone else had ferraris and lamborghinis but mine was the nsx. It was my dream car. Please Harry, don't pan my childhood dreams.
My ex wife rented one for my birthday one year. It wasn't especially a clean example but, that induction sound, ah, so glorious. She was good to me. Not sure I was ever so good to her.
Superb review Harry of an awesome car. My take on the NSX evolution and all new cars is how fast can you actually travel down the road? Track obviously totally different. I'll take a car with classic lines and enough power you can use, I could listen to that sound track for hours.
Probably one of the prettiest rear ends in the history of the motor car; and a repetitive din which assures one that the ultra-reliable engine never misses a beat. There's a downside though, Harry: it's louder than you!
my FC rx7 has aluminum jack also. Back in the days a lot of normal sports car has so many aluminum parts that you won't see it today since cost cutting are so important now.
Honda engineering was wonderful. Had a VFR750, CRX gen2, a gen3, and now a low miles S2000......have moved them all. As a brit we love our mechanical engineering.....and Japan was exactly the same.
Thank you Harry for a nice review! Would have loved to see more details of the cars exterior and interiour. Please Harry, if you could do a looooooong and detaied review of the xj220, it would indeed be awesome! Cheers from loyal fan from Norway :D
The engine was originally intended to be an existing unit (if I'm not mistaken from the Legend), however at the last minute it was decided that it should have Honda's VTEC system (since some of their mainstream models already featured this) and higher power. At this point in development it was difficult to change the car's dimensions so they canted the engine at an angle to get it to fit with the additional VTEC equipment on the now higher head, hence the slanted engine at 5:14
I had a 2003 Seat Ibiza TDI which had an aluminium jack too. It was a spindle-type like my mk2 Golf had but much lighter, the spindle was made from steel.
Another great vid Harry although the sound mix seemed wrong (or was it me?) as I couldn't really hear what you were saying towards the end. Still, the V6 drowning you out sounded good. Also I was expecting the review of the new NSX to follow, but I don't mind waiting.
And then one day you regret the statement and start claiming the NSX is amazing much like every other person who trashed the NSX in the 90's. The car today has gotten the exact same criticisms as it did back then. Takes talent to recognize talent.
The original commenter didn't say the '17 NSX was a bad car, just that it has nothing in common with the original NSX - they could have at least made an attempt to bring across some styling queues or something. I agree though, I well remember the motoring press's snobby put downs on the original NSX - and how time proved how irrational they were.
Nice change seeing Japanese metal reviewed. There were other interesting choices back in 90s that I wouldn’t mind seeing Harry flog. Mazda RX-7, Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo...
I just have to point out that vtec is not variable valve timing like vanos or similar. It engages a different cam profile so giving you a race cam( yes with diferent timing) and a normal cam in the same engine.
Not twitchy or power over steer due to the toe-in set-up at rear. It appears that they had a class action law suit against them for excessive rear tyre wear. Rear toe setting came down from I think around 0.6 degrees to 0.3deg toe-in.

Beautiful engine note, props to the engineers.
The NSX has become so precious, I'd never approach the limits. Yet I'd still have a blast in it.
Superb review Harry of an awesome car.
My take on the NSX evolution and all new cars is how fast can you actually travel down the road? Track obviously totally different.
I'll take a car with classic lines and enough power you can use, I could listen to that sound track for hours.
That engine sound on full throttle.... superb!
The jack from my 1988 Mazda RX 7 Turbo is also a German made one from aluminium, some Porsches have it too.
My '83 944 has an aluminium jack, it amused me as well.
That NSX looks like it has a collapsible space saver like the 944 as well, terrifying things!
Very educational Harry, that old girl just sounds delightful.
Flipped through JayEmm's video on this very car, watched all of Harry's Garage version - say no more
How do videos like this get dislikes?! Some ridiculous people about. Great video Harry 👌🏻
Harry the 300ZX also had alloy jacks. In a very heavy, steel car though.
Probably one of the prettiest rear ends in the history of the motor car; and a repetitive din which assures one that the ultra-reliable engine never misses a beat. There's a downside though, Harry: it's louder than you!
What a gorgeous sound!
my FC rx7 has aluminum jack also.
Never really realised that the old NSX was such a cool car, looks like a blast to drive!
still one of my dream cars to this day
Sound, pure sound
Thank you Harry for a nice review! Would have loved to see more details of the cars exterior and interiour.
Please Harry, if you could do a looooooong and detaied review of the xj220, it would indeed be awesome! Cheers from loyal fan from Norway :D
Bentley Zagato at 4:59. Ultra rare.
At 11:06 true exotic feeling of NSX is squeezed out like Johny Depp craved for Blackpearl in "Pirates Of The Caribbean".
My goodness, that engine is absolutely pristine spotless... beautiful sight. Cannot hear a thing you are saying over that glorious engine sound!
God, that car sounds beautiful.
Great video as usual Harry! Love your content
Thanks Harry, one of my favorites. Would like to see you review a 308/328 someday, as I think for me it would be a 308 or this NSX...
i only see one NSX and a new honda hybrid sportscar
Touche :|
And then one day you regret the statement and start claiming the NSX is amazing much like every other person who trashed the NSX in the 90's. The car today has gotten the exact same criticisms as it did back then. Takes talent to recognize talent.
Nokturnal I believe the new nsx only needs one thing to be a true nsx. A manual gearbox.
The original commenter didn't say the '17 NSX was a bad car, just that it has nothing in common with the original NSX - they could have at least made an attempt to bring across some styling queues or something. I agree though, I well remember the motoring press's snobby put downs on the original NSX - and how time proved how irrational they were.
thank you sir.
Nice change seeing Japanese metal reviewed. There were other interesting choices back in 90s that I wouldn’t mind seeing Harry flog. Mazda RX-7, Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo...
what makes the NSX so special is Ayrton Senna helped fine tune it. you always live forever in our hearts
