was thinking about this but i feel like it would still be low enough not to matter since the car is already so low. More likely for high speed to prevent damage is my guess.
Excellent review, Doug, as usual. I just wanted to add a few points that I think are important and worth to be mentioned: Honda is still manufacturing and providing ALL PARTS for the NSX cars up to date, no matter which year it's been built. Moreover, later models parts are compatible with earlier ones, they are fully interchangeable. You can even change earlier popping lights to late fixed ones or vice versa. The blank button on the console of the model you reviewed is for the headlights height setting which curiously was an option. The NSX was the first mass production car that had a full aluminum chassis. Last fact/feature: the engine was the first in the world to have titanium rods to improve the revs
Honda manufacturing all parts has not been my experience, a lot of NSX-specific, non-maintenance parts are now discontinued - windshields, for example. If you have a source for parts I'd be interested :)
@@victorzaccardo well I'm sorry to read that. In France there is an NSX club who can maybe help you. I'll check to find their contact. Now maybe it will not work for parts like lights or bumpers cause safety regulations are different but for the rest of the parts it should be OK. I'll check and get back to you 👍
NSX rods were an alloy that actually only have a small amount of titanium. Rods in the C6 Z06 were actually full forged titanium aftermarket rods supplied by either Pankl or Mahle.
That is probably not accurate I'm afraid; either in availability or interchangeability. Case in point would be the cruise control module (don;t remember the exact part name). The module in my '99 died, and it was not available any longer. Unfortunately several different P/N modules were used, and it is a guess as to whether or not interchangeability is possible. It might be, but it's a rather high cost risk to take as they are generally not returnable, even from Honda/Acura. That said, this was my experience. I may have a lazy dealership, so if you have a supplier, I'm all open to suggestion.
Richard Hammond also misattributed it to aerodynamics when reviewing the NSX-R saying the engineers did that to enable higher speeds when the radio was on. It gets frustrating when high visibility journalists make these kinds of mistakes and then you spend the next 20 years correcting the internet hivemind about it.
@@zuranku yeah no kidding, 80s and early 90s Japan was no budget on everything lol...most of Japanese manufactures had multiple sports cars being produced at once...most any manufacture that isn't high end has one sports car if that...and its usually re-badged or has borrowed parts.
All the Japanese companies dropped sports cars back then. Supra, VR4, RX7, 300ZX, etc. As for other Hondas the Del Sol was also really beautiful especially with the targa top off. Del Sol was my first car 21 years ago and I was hoping to score an NSX one day but not for the price they are asking. I settled on a used S2000 and feel satisfied with it.
In Japan, all cars are limited to 276hp due to the law known as gentlemen’s agreement. Even the later 3.2L is still restricted to 276hp in Japan where in the US it’s tuned to 290hp.
@@lordmaster5522 it is labeled as only having 276hp in japan but it indeed had 290hp like the exported cars. It was and still is a funny law but they definitely make more then the 276hp.
@@6speedvtec789 I think Doug was referring to 250hp at the wheel while Acura/Honda spec it 270hp at the crank. So there is about a 20hp drivetrain loss which makes sense.
Actually, you can operate climate control manually. Just push “mode” and auto mode will be switched to manual one. And push “auto” to switch back to automatic climate control.
Do you also happen to know why there are 2 blank buttons? I own a 91' and they controll fog lights, they are not blank. I also dont have cup holders, but a way larger storage between the seats. Didnt know they changed that later on.

Another cool fact: Gordon Murray got his inspiration to start developing the McLaren F1 (arguably the greatest road car ever made) right after driving an Honda NSX. The Honda NSX might be the reason why the greatest supercar ever made exists.
Another fact, a stroked reinforced twin turbo NSX can give a McLaren F1 a run for its monetary worth. I've always liked the first gen NSX but I don't like the design of the car revolves around the V6 Accord drivetrain.
@@JoRgEChavez-to2xd but they didn't revolve around the Accord V6. The engine was from Honda's V10 formula1 platform. They just deleted 4 cylinders. In the 90s Honda was the top F1 manufacturer when they were teamed up with Mcleran.

Really missed the ball on heritage here. He did mention there are tons of stories for this car but didn’t even bother quickly talking about the most important. Senna.
He's showing the car to people who have never seen one in person. It's actually really informative from a practical perspective instead of a figurative one like most reviewers have always given. He has to know much more than he talks about but a lot of the history and mechanical specifications are not relative to the subject matter that Doug is showcasing and reviewing, what it's like to actually drive the car.
For me they honestly make this car gorgeous. The NSX that came after this one was okay, but without the pop up headlights it wasn’t even close to the original.
No, that has been so overblown it’s unreal. He drove a McLaren/Honda F1 car and so drove the NSX for promotional purposes. He even said “I don’t really know what to tell you for a road car”. Don’t act like he worked in the design room for two years, he drove it once and said what he thought was bad about it. The NSX was an overpriced accord with a fancy body, a GT86 is a way better buy for the same approach to car design.
@@nunyabusiness896 I agreed with you until you said it was an overpriced accord. The early gen nsx’s were matching Ferrari’s performance at its time, for 4x less the cost.
No sir, I have the same opinion. I have a JDM 2000 RZ-S Supra which I wouldn't trade it for nothing in this world but I must agree that NSX NA1 was and still is the best 90's Japanese car as a whole package.
In my opinion this is a perfect sports car. Looks awesome, very simple and yet so good interior, the engine ? yeah not so powerful , but it is pretty good. Trunk? it has a nice trunk for what it is!. And finally, the driving feeling and handling. The NSX has it all, so for me i can say it is the "perfect" sports car!
I noticed the wheels. Was wondering about climate control. Mine is never automatic and I frankly forgot how you switch. Doug missed the funky side vents that stick up up when pressed on the sides. Figured that would be his favorite quark...
@D W, correction for your correction. The model he reviewed is from Japan where they have the “gentlemen” agreement where HP is limited. And in the US, the Acura NSX had two engines. The manual 3.0V6 is 270hp while the automatic 3.0V6 is 252hp. In Japan, all Honda NSX uses the detuned 252hp engine regardless of manual or auto. However, in the US because it’s badged as an Acura instead of Honda, the manual is tuned to 270hp to distinguish it from the lesser Honda brand.
Another thing that made the NSX special was it was one of the first street cars with variable valve timing, which was a HUGE thing in F1 in the late 80s and early 90s. Honda was big in F1 at the time. They took their variable valve timing and put it in the NSX. And VTEC was born.

I remember thinking the 3000GT VR4, 300ZX TT, and Supra Turbo were way cooler because they had more power, then over years I finally found drove or knew people who had all these cars. And the NSX drove SO nice compared to those other Japanese cars from the era. No wonder it went up in value so much.
Agree with you.....no wow factor with this car in my opinion. Drove in one and just seemed like a little quicker Honda, but didn't feel special at all.
@@Boatfisherz1 guess you missed my last two sentences. The NSX is legendary to drive. The cockpit, greenhouse, viewing angle over the hood, intake and exhaust sounds.. plus it's a mid engine car with titanium rods (in 1991!) and an ALL aluminum body. It is absolutely special. And that's why Gordon Murray used it as a template to build what most people consider to be the best car of all time: The Mclaren F1.
Seeing this brings tears to my eyes. What an absolute beauty. Not only low miles, but stock. And as a bonus, with the steering wheel on the correct side and also the correct badges. What a treasure. And for a purist, the Acura badge is the one that looks out of place. This is the real deal.
I noticed this one had almost 50,000 miles. That is low miles but low miles for a Ferrari would be less than 10k even 5k miles. Really shows the difference between quality/ reliability of these cars
"I'm not sure I can really give you appropriate advice on a mass-production car," Senna told the team. "But I feel it's a little fragile." Ayrton Senna, F1 driver giving his opinion about the nsx prototype after testing it.
After Senna critiqued the nsx, Honda went back and stiffened the chassis 50%. They listened to him. Thats why the coupe is preferable to the targa top.

Post your "I almost bought an NSX" stories here: My sad story goes as follows. Back in 2017 I got the bug to buy one. Took me about a year to find the right one. Finally in 2018, I found a 2001 6 speed, Red, tan interior, 99% stocked, 68000 miles, garaged California NSX. The 2001 version was the last year with pop-up headlights too. All service done at a highly respected Honda/Acura repair shop for most of its life. Owner let the pros take care of the NSX, he maintained all service records too. He wanted I believe $74K for it. So off to my local credit union I went. That did not work out, they deemed the NSX too old of a vehicle. What I said? I then went to PenFed. They could not give all the funds. I had to come up with $20K in cash to make up the difference. Plus, the seller would NOT budge on the price. I offered $68K for the beautiful red NSX, but he would not go for it. So $6000 was the deal breaker. I was so planning to drive that beauty everyday. I even cleared out my garage for her.
I got a chance to buy one 1991 NSX with 57k miles for $39k. I sold my daily the next week and bought the nsx and had it since. Used it as a daily for almost a year untill I got a new daily driver. Never regret it (obviously) was always my dream car as a kid, and Im glad I bought it. Today I would not be able to pay ~$60k for it.
I'm torn between the Diablo, the Viper, the Ferrari 512TR, and the NSX as most beautiful 90's exotic, but since I'm an Asian girl I should be choosing the only Asian made one which of course is the NSX.
I'm glad in the early 90s Honda had the vigor to integrate the NSX into the lineup. It was a prelude to the company becoming a legend, and also their civic duty to pilot into the future a new accord in the auto industry!
I sold my 94 NSX (Brooklands Green) with 60k miles for $22k in 2010. Story of my life. It was a fantastic car, fast, good handling, comfortable and a good daily driver. Cheap to operate.
I remember going to a car meet and there was an nsx, but the owner actually let me sit in it... Best day of my life it felt so unreal yet so exciting, the nsx has been my dream car for soo long I can't remember it's just a masterpiece of engineering 🙌
I had an 83 rx7 that had "cupholders" in the glove box. But all it was was 2 small quarter inch deep circles alluding to the possibility of placing a drink there. any drink bigger than one of those paper water cups is too tall to fit.
This once again proves that the 90s led in automobile innovation: The NSX, Supra, 300zx, Corvette, Camero, Trans Am, RX7, 3000gt, Stealth, Mustang etc... The summer of the 90's was a line up vintage vehicles and I was blessed to be apart of it with my 1994 300z.

Definitely one of the cars I would own if I was a collector. Alongside with the LFA, the Mk4 Supra and of course the Carrera GT.
My list would have 3 of them :)

Post your "I almost bought an NSX" stories here:
My sad story goes as follows.
Sad, but probably a good move financially. If you can't lay cash comfortably, don't.
Should of sold drugs for the weekend to come up with the money. The car is probably gonna be worth much more soon
You wouldn't have been able to afford it anyways. if you can't come up with 6k cash you can't afford to maintain it. Plus paying back the loans.
@@greatleader4841 owned mine 4 years now, spent a total of $1.5k on it. That includes new tires and brake pads. Its very cheap to own
Still the sexiest car of the '90s in my opinion. I love that color, too.
In my option the rx-7 takes that place
Uh this isn't the '90s it's the new one 12:10
@@djemischief1 Uh this isn't the new one, It's a 1994 NSX 23:57

Winston Wolf drove an Acura NSX-that’s good enough for me.

You just press AC and not auto button and use AC as manual AC, like in most 90s and early 2000s cars
@@dindinbre I was thinking the same thing,
you can adjust your ac temp on the left and then adjust amount of air on the right.

s2000 cupholders tho lmao
I had an 83 rx7 that had "cupholders" in the glove box. But all it was was 2 small quarter inch deep circles alluding to the possibility of placing a drink there. any drink bigger than one of those paper water cups is too tall to fit.
This once again proves that the 90s led in automobile innovation: The NSX, Supra, 300zx, Corvette, Camero, Trans Am, RX7, 3000gt, Stealth, Mustang etc... The summer of the 90's was a line up vintage vehicles and I was blessed to be apart of it with my 1994 300z.
This car is perfect
