Porsche Carrera GT history and on-road review. Best sounding Porsche ever?

- The Porsche Carrera GT was first shown in concept form in September 2000 and I was there. This video gives you an insight of that amazing reveal and then what's it like to drive on road and how it compares to its rivals, including the McLaren F1.

Love how clean it’s lines are, and I love the fact it doesn’t have horrible big infotainment screens that would have aged horribly by now. It’s simple design means it will always look timeless
it would have looked horrible back then!
You R totally right. its timeless
@@invisiblekid99 they've kept it simple, the becker radio has only 2 dials. not that you would listen to it, but it's nice to have
Yes! The aesthetics for the pure car enthusiasts. We don't need infotainment, the car is the infotainment.
Yes and that’s why this is classic elegance and timeless compared to Ferrari or Lamborghini.
It’s so pristine
It is impossible for me to express how much I love this car.
Me too.
Wonderful beautiful brilliant work of art
early in the video: active spoiler rises at 78 mph. Harry on B roads: spoiler rises in the background. Love it.
@@shadowred1980 Yes officer, for cleaning.
I noticed that too...
Lots of cleaning the spoiler on *B* roads
@@shadowred1980 Thank goodness, I knew Harry would have only been doing 50 mph or so at any time... he must have done that for filming purposes with the button, so we could see. :-) :-)
@@ImBarryScottCSS yes you have to do that speed to clean it underneath.
The year was 2007 and I was twenty years old. I was working for a local Porsche-Audi dealer as a shuttle driver when a customer brought in one of these Carrera GTs for some work. I count myself lucky to have been there when he returned to pick it up. He crawled out of the lot and onto the street that ran out front of the dealer and then made his way to the stop sign with the major highway. Just as I gave up on hearing anything from it, this primordial scream came forth as he floored it away from the stop sign and it was as if the checkered flag had just dropped on a one-car F1 race. He ran it straight to redline and even though he was well away from the building, the volume never seemed to diminish. I'd never heard anything like it and even now, 13 years later I can still hear it in my head and it never fails to make the hairs on my neck stand up. What a car!!!!
Wow, if anyone should review this iconic car, it's Harry. Brilliant.
Jay Leno have one of these, will be great to see another review
Yes, probably 'beneath' the juvenile "It's Shmee" to do a coherent review on such a cheap car without breaking into inane childish laughter while seeing how many people look at him as he drives it through central (insert major city here). Alternatively you could tune in to "me, me, me, and a bit more me" aka Jay Emm and get bored into submission while getting nothing better than a view of Mr Emms face as he waffles on about how crap McLaren's customer service is......well that's how I see it anyway.....
@@BibTheBoulderTheOriginalOne Bib The Boulder , once I kind of repeated the "Seing throug glass" laughter off and was so funny. Even Doug Demuro makes me sleep. The real deal is Harry and Jay Lenno. Oh, that guy, Salomondrin... Asshole too
@@rvpsilva9213 Couldn't have put it better myself.
Check out daddy Doug demuros video on it then
4 years = a million dollars of appreciation, and I still think they're under priced. Harry's best video imo. What a car.
Well this is going to be the best video i've seen all week
Might be the best video I've seen all year.
Next best thing to owning a Carera GT, watching Harry driving one! And listen! To the car, not the driver.
After Gervais' GG monologue ;)

Such good Harry commentary and video - as always - from someone who knows! He has driven them all. I liked his sum up about the F1 too. Great stuff. Once again, many thanks for your channel(s), Harry.
Some cars are just bloody special. This is one of them.
What makes Harry's reviews so unique are the stories from personal experience he throws into them. Lucky to follow him from the early EVO days.
“And me and Walter Rohrl were just casually having a chat......” 😂

Yup. I think we can add the R8 V10 and the 911 gt3 rs to the supercars , and the Valkyrie to the hypercars.
Agreed.
that's a damn fine review by someone who knows what is talking about. amazing harry!
Yes it is !
This video is a perfect example of why Harry is so unique - despite the eye watering price and exclusivity of some of his subject cars, he has a wonderful way of summarizing the attributes (positive and negative) of his subject matter in a matter of fact, layman's everyday explanation that perfectly gives you a first hand impression of the car's qualities. Like you're there in the cockpit, sitting right beside him, hanging on to every word. Very sincere and genuine. Love this channel, one of the best car channels today
He's a very senior sportscar journalist.
I read EVO every month during his tenure and it was an amazing magazine. It illustrated the experience of these sportscars.
Some of the best motoring journalists were writing for EVO.
Harry is a national treasure. I'd say a knighthood would be well deserved.
Luv and Peace.
Hearing about that 45k mile Carrera GT made me smile, glad at least one of them was properly used
Had a look at mobile.de, more cgt with +30k than those without.
Then you get idiots like BC (Benjamin Chen) who destroy these rare machines because of coke and boredom🤦♂️
A 16 year old car with less than 3000 miles on the clock is a disgrace,
@@cutdepiefails6596
Not on UK Autotrader, most( of half a dozen) are just show cars with a few thousand miles for 650k to 750k, a bit sad really.
Roger Hudson why do people even by them if they don’t want to drive them? I mean this car is all about driving.
God what a brilliant review, no fuss, straight to the point. Harry’s one of the best if not the best today. Please don’t miss the last 10 seconds. What an ending!!
Now go buy one....
My all-time favourite car. Lucky enough to see one on the road, sounds unreal in person.
I was on holiday driving down Wiltshire Boulevard on Christmas day 2005 heading to my mates house for dinner.
I was stopped at the lights when I heard this sound come down the street from behind me and stop in the lane right beside me. . I knew what it was before it pulled up. Black over tan, driven by a basketball player person.
I asked him in my best friendly Irish accent to floor it, he did. AMAZING. Still my favourite car.
I wonder if Porsche could ever be tempted to build a continuation model of this car because it now has such an iconic status. Yeah, that V10 does sound unreal.
Biggest mistake ever selling one in 2008, they have shot up in value like crazy
Omg where do you spot this unicorn?
@Mr. Trick First of all nice cat u got there..Personally, have to say if I saw this and a Zonda Cinque side by side I could not not pick the Zonda no matter how great this thing is;d
I read that issue of EVO with the analog supercars a dozen times over, I was in Afghanistan at the time on a deployment and it was one of the few mags that actually made it through the mail to my unit. Awesome stuff.
I was bored then Harry posted a video. All ready in a better mood. These are the best videos going about cars
Keyser Soze You’ve named yourself after a fictional character from a movie, then you’re shitting on a perfectly innocent remark on a UA-cam video - and have come to the conclusion that he needs to get a life? OK pal! 😝

I dunno how to describe it but through the in-car footage this car conveyed itself, Harry didn't have to say a word. Everything about it seems so transparent and so purposeful.
Harry needs a Carrera GT in the garage. Best car ever.
This car is the reason I don't like most Porsches.

A fantastic review of my favourite car - I've been lucky enough to own one from new in 2005, and done 21,000 memorable miles. It was so good that Olaf Manthey once said it could win the Nurburgring 24 hour race virtually "out of the box"; sadly Porsche never let him try! Thanks Harry - that was a real treat.
stefaneinz the big question is now; if it’s true.... what do you drive currently?😉
Custard test!

You lucky bastard
Simply the best sounding road car engine ever made.
This is what I want to see, theres so many incredible cars that we're produced in the past but due to the era when they were released there's barely any video media of them being driven and talked about. More of this please. Cars were far better before electrification.
Nonsense. Without digitization they wouldn't be safe especially with the crazy horsepower that they are putting out. I like analogue too but it has its drawbacks.
Why dont you ignore about how many lives been saved by Electronic safety systems? ABS? EBS? Traction Control? even Airbags wont even existed?
@@yaris684 Thank god someone has some common sense. people act like Analog = Real driving pleasure, but they never wants to go back the era that Self start wasnt even existed.😂
@@MethmalDhananjaya Still you dont need many of this electric stuff for a funn ride. For Daily this is a whole other story for sure.
@@Trochanus yes but realisticly someone who can afford this these days never gonna use it for Long Trip cruise or Heavy Track usage.
Despite being a great performance advantage, the small diameter clutch and low weight flywheel are one of the main reasons why people crash this car. Jay Leno, Rodger Rodas, Lewis Hamilton's father, etc.. The engine response is so immediate and there is no buffer between driver and engine. If you don't know how to drive a race car, don't expect to be able to push this car without the very real possibility of spinning out. Very similar to 1 liter Supersport bikes. You have to feather on and off the throttle very carefully when you're taking turns.
I couldn't help but smile during that last 10 seconds
Superb video as usual Harry, thank you for bringing these to us!
I nearly stopped at the footman james ad - glad I didn't.....that noise!!
David Hewitt thanks for your comment! I would have missed that otherwise.
Saw one today at Goodwood, what a noise ! Fantastic !
By far the best car related youtube channel featuring my absolute favorite car and probably the best drivers car of the 21 century.
This is going to be a fantastic 28 minutes.
Love all the architectural elements of this car, especially the way the rear glass interacts with the roll bars which in turn incorporate the engine air boxes -it's a fantastic multi layered area of the car that you never get tired of looking at.
This is the car people will remember when everything goes electric and autonomous. Manual, 5.7 n/a V10, clever carbon bodywork.
Serious candidate for best sounding car ever, period. A precision engineered scalpel with a howling soulful v10 at it's heart. Beautiful, and great review Harry.
I’m so used to watching modern car reviews, then after watching this. I realise what we’re missing. My god.
Possibly my 18th viewing of this video. I’ll most likely continue to watch this every month for the rest of my life, it’s pretty much my favorite video on UA-cam.
His reviews are so perfect 👌 it’s so therapeutic
This has been my dream car since I first saw the video of Walter driving the concept car through the desert and this has been one of the most in-depth looks at this amazing car, once again Harry you’ve aloud us access to the sensations of being in the vehicle and described the parts of the experience that we can’t get from just seeing it
I haven't even watched this and I've liked it. Saving it until I've been good enough to deserve it!

Lol, I feel exactly the same! 😊
When Harry slapped his right hand on the roof I was going....oh no I hope he doesnt have a ring on.
...he didn’t. Lol
It’d be like that sometime
The EVO issue mentioned at 15:27 was one of the best. I remember drooling over the car line up. Great memories!
The best car enthusiast and presenter on UA-cam, hands down! Thank you Harry!
Back in April 04 I went to the factory to collect my new Carrera 4S. Porsche still had their "old" museum then, which was quite small. As I was looking round it they began moving some of the cars and I ended up helping them push the 917 known as "Big Bertha" out of the display to make room for a new car. I didn't know what the new one was going to be, but a few minutes later a Carrera GT appeared with engine running. I'll never forget the fantastic sound of that engine and particularly the way it fell silent instantly when the driver shut it off, just like an F1 car. One moment all idling menace and power and complexity, then....nothing. What a great day - thanks for stirring up some treasured memories Harry!
The first time I heard the sound of this Porsche was The film Fracture. It was being driven by Antony Hopkins. Fantastic!
I'll never forget being outside the Dorint Hotel at Nurburgring and seeing a CGT. It pulled out on to the clear road, paused, and then launched. The noise will live with me forever. Savage!
I could quite happily spend the rest of my day listening to Mr Metcalf tell war stories about manufacturers and drivers. You're that compelling of a presenter Harry.
One of your best videos Harry. This needs to be a Sticky on the UA-cam welcome page for any car fan.
It is impossible for me to express how much I love this car. Thanks for taking us along!
It's beyond criminal that I can only give one like to this video. Well done Harry.
OMG favorite car and youtube channel together at last!!! Harry's #1!!!💙💙🔥🔥
It's aged so well! I own a 718 Spyder and I must say I see many styling similarities between the two cars!
Saving this for my dinner viewing tonight :)
Just watched this video, wasn't disapointed at all, what a machine! That sound must be addictive. Great job Harry.
I used to work next door to HRE Wheels in Vista, CA and one day I was sitting at my desk and heard what sounded like a Formula One car race by the building (this was back when Formula One cars had V10 engines). Of course I had to go out and see what it was and I found out it was a black Porsche Carrera GT, a Maserati MC12, a rather pedestrian Ferrari F430 and a Lamborghini of some sort (might have been a Gallardo-it may have been orange... I don't remember). The guy driving the Porsche Carrera GT was taking one of the guys from HRE for a spin around the building and doing donuts in the back parking lot with it. Apparently, they all drove down from Orange County and one of the group in another Porsche got pulled over by CHP for doing well over 100mph. I'll never own one of these cars but I have seen a couple of them in the wild and they sound amazing. Thanks again for the great videos!
When I stay with old pals in Ascott under Wychwood - we often see exoticars locally and they say "It's only Harry" !! Brilliant video!
Thanks Harry what a fantastic video, why so many 👎disgraceful.
I haven’t seen this video yet despite finding videos of this OUTSTANDING beautiful car. Quite frankly you review is way better than the rests I managed to watch. I thank you, good sir, for enlightening me on this roaring machine. Your review is lovely and I realize, I missed out a lot before I found your channel c:
That final little clip at the rear of the car!! It sounded like a thousand shrieks of terror!!
I think you may just have outdone yourself with this simply splendid review. Your commentary conveyed several aspects about it but you managed to capture the nature of the sounds beautifully. I might just 'watch' this again, with my eyes shut. Thank you very much for a most enjoyable review of one of my favourite ever cars produced. Magnificent job Harry!
You are fantastic at making these reviews . As a lifelong petrolhead , THANK YOU
As a Boxster owner, it's really neat to see the similarities between the Carrera GT and the Boxster. The door jambs look the same, the front hood looks the same (though probably carbon) and of course the instrument cluster and steering wheel look to be the same unit (also shared with 996). It's remarkable how well finished this car is compared to something like a Lamborghini of the same vintage - the details are bordering on apple consumer product - level attention.
Well they were designed by the same person and the CGT concept was also built upon a Boxster chassis!
i wonder if there is more or less space in a CGT than a boxster?
The sound the engine makes when flooring it is BY FAR the most BEAUTIFUL of any car out there!!
I would really love to see Porsche Come up with another car like this.
The greatest non-911 Porsche ever!
On Sunday I was in Zuffenhausen/GER to visit PORSCHE museum - they have this industrial jewel also there, dressed in red. The design is not so breath-taking, as Lambos or Ferraris, but that engine is masterpiece...and with Walter Röhrl in developement, there could not be a mistake. Thank you, Harry.
Well this is a great unexpected start to the morning! Thanks for the video as always!
This video is a complete ace start to finish. The engine notes closing out each HG vid are always memorable, this one might take the cake... Stunning.

Sounds like we need a Harry's Garage episode on the Lex, now.
No, no... sounds more like we need an LFA + Carerra GT cup race. Better bring some mops to the track!
Interesting! Probably because of the individual throttle bodies on the LFA engine, however no manual :(
@@ericuyttebroeck LFA also revs higher, 9500 RPM vs 8400 RPM.
V10 production cars will forever be a very special and small group. I think I love them all. That said, comparing them is mighty interesting. I hope we'll see more state-of-art artworks in the future like the CGT and LFA doubtlessly were, but I think the odds are slim. Perhaps Ferrari downsizing from V12's :p I'm sure they could make a V10 masterpiece.
Sorry boys, i heard both in the real world. The GT is real motorsport sound, the LFA is just artificially enhanced sound. Even more so at low and medium revs.

Watching this and listening to Harry’s enjoyment actually had me blubbing with tears in my eyes.
